• How to configure mod_proxy_balancer to gracefully fail under high load

  We have a system which has one Apache instance in front of multiple tomcats. These tomcats then connect to various databases. We balance the load to the tomcat with mod_proxy_balancer. Currently we are receiving 100 requests a second, the load on the Apache server is quite low, but due to database heavy operations on the tomcats, the load there is roughly 25% (of what I estimate they can handle). In a few weeks there is an event happening and we estimate that our requests will jump significant, maybe by a factor of 10. I'm doing everything I can do reduce the load on our tomcats, but I know we are going to run out of capacity, so I would like to fail gracefully. By this I mean, instead of trying to deal with too many connections which all timeout, I would like Apache to somehow monitor average response time, and as soon as the response time to Tomcat is getting above some threshold, I would like a error page displayed. This means that users who are lucky still get a page rendered quickly, and those who are unlucky get a error page quickly. Instead of everyone waiting far too long for their page, and eventually everyone timing out, and the database being swamped with queries which are never used. Hopefully this makes sense, so I was looking for suggestions on how I could achieve this. thanks

• mod rewrite works fine apart from for missing directory index files

  I have a legacy web site hosted on Apache. It has a number of web pages sitting in the public web root and its subfolders. publicDocs/ directorywith_no_defaultfile/ some-legacy-flat-page.htm .htaccess index.php some-legacy-flat-page.htm I would like to start using Zend MVC for some of the newer pages. I have got a .htaccess mod rewrite rule working so that any request for a non-existent file is sent to be handled by the MVC bootstrap file (/index.php). With my current set-up, the following types of requests are routed to '/index.php', the MVC bootstrap: /index.php /blah /directorywith_no_defaultfile/bloo The following types of request are served by old legacy (flat) pages /some-legacy-flat-page.htm /directorywith_no_defaultfile/some-legacy-flat-page.htm But, when I a request a non-existent file that is a directory like these: /directorywith_no_defaultfile or /directorywith_no_defaultfile/ I get an error: Forbidden You don't have permission to access /directorywith_no_defaultfile/ on this server. Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request. I suspect this may have something to do with the way Apache handles default files. Do you know which Apache directives could be causing this?

• Graphite not running

  I'm currently trying to install graphite 0.9.9 on a gentoo box using these instructions from the graphite wiki. Essentially, it fronts graphite using apache and mod_wsgi. Everything seems to have gone well, except that apache / the graphite webapp never seem to return a response to the web browser (the browser continuously waits to load the page). I've turned on the graphite debug info, but the only message in the log files is this, repeated over and over again in info.log (with the pid always changing): Thu Feb 23 01:59:38 2012 :: graphite.wsgi - pid 4810 - reloading search index These instructions have worked for me before to set up graphite on an Ubuntu machine. • Active Directory problems while trying to perfom compare operation

  I have CentOs 5.5 with Apache 2.2 and SVN installed. Also I have Windows 2003 R2 with Active Directory. I'm trying to authorize users via AD so each user have access to repo if he is a member of corespondent group in AD.   I have a server running Debian, with an installation of Apache 2.2.16, with PHP/MySQL, and now also an instance of Wordpress. I am playing around with user/group rights on Debian, and I can't make it work the way I want it to. I believe Apache is using (only) the www-data user. The following setup works /var/www# chown -R www-data:nogroup wordpress /var/www# chmod -R 700 wordpress /var/www# ls -l | grep wordpress drwx------ 5 www-data nogroup 4096 Nov 1 09:30 wordpress The following doesn't work. /var/www# groupadd wordpress /var/www# usermod -a -G wordpress www-data /var/www# groups www-data www-data : www-data wordpress /var/www# chown -R nobody:wordpress wordpress /var/www# chmod -R 770 wordpress /var/www# ls -l | grep wordpress drwxrwx--- 5 nobody wordpress 4096 Nov 1 09:30 wordpress With the above settings, when I try to access the page in my browser, I get: You don't have permission to access /wordpress/ on this server. Here is my understanding: The folders are owned by the group wordpress, and the folders have all rights (read, write, execcute) given to the owning group, wordpress. Apache user www-data is a member of the group wordpress, so it should have all rights to the folders. What have I misunderstood?

• In APC+PHP, how much RAM is too much? Is it okay to set apc.shm_size to many GB?

  On our server we have a LOT of RAM for our traffic levels (16GB). The HTTP processes regularly eat up all CPU and need to be restarted without even getting close to using swap memory, so I'm looking for ways to spend RAM to ease the load on Apache (and/or help the seperate MySQL server which may be breaking Apache). I have many WordPress installs on the HTTPD instance so APC sometimes uses as much as 900MB of ram (according to the apc.php charts). Just in case I have apc.shm_size set to 1600MB which is more than it needs but not more than I can spare. This means there is usually lots of extra RAM available to APC but also very little turnover and fragmentation is never more than 1%. Is this dangerous? Should I be slimming down APC to less than 1GB just on principle? Should I be expecting some turnover within APC in the name of bringing it's overall footprint down? Having so much memory devoted to APC means that in top/htop every single httpd process shows ~1.9GB in the VIRT memory column. Obviously this is shared memory and not used per-process, but could it be hurting our server? NOTE: The problem with the server remains unclear but the effect is that about 60 times a day all 8 CPU's fill up to 100% and everything stops working until Monit sees that Apache is broken and restarts it (Monin also saves the MySQL server). I'm not sure if APC is even part of the problem but I'm trying to optimize everything just in case.

• What can be a reason for phpMyAdmin login to be not working (not at all, no reaction on submit)?

  When I open "http://localhost/phpmyadmin/", enter "root" as the user name and my MySQL root password and press go, then if I was using Firefox, I was getting offered to download index.php file (of a zero length), if I was using Opera 11, it said "Connection closed by remote server". Following recommendations I've removed all packages related to phpMyAdmin, PHP, MySQL and Apache and then reinstalled them step-by step (instead of just issuing apt-get install phpmyadmin and relying on the system to install the whole LAMP stack via dependencies as I've done before). The only change I've got was Firefox to stop offering to download index.php - now when I press Ok to submit my password, it just doesn't show any visible reaction at all. What may the reason be and how to fix it? I use up-to-date Xubuntu 11.04. Reinstalling the whole LAMP stack and phpMyAdmin did not help, neither did removing AppArmor. I've tried to use SQLBuddy instead, but there's exactly the same problem. So, I think, the problem is not in phpMyAdmin but in MySQL, Apache or something. MySQL seems to work if I use command line to access it. Apache & PHP seems to work also, as the login page of phpMyAdmin displays correctly.

• WAMP Installation - Multiple PHP Version Issues

  I have installed WAMP because I am attempting to modify an an application which uses Zend Optimizer (I cannot use Z.O. with PHP5.3+, which is why I decided to install WAMP). I downloaded the latest version - Wamp Server 2.1 - which comes bundled with PHP5.3.5. I then downloaded a PHP version that would be compatible with Z.O. - 5.2.9. - and a compatible Apache version, 2.0.63. My problem: PHP scripts run fine, but anything with MySQL does not work. Running the testmysql.php script returns the fatal error: Fatal error: Call to undefined function mysql_connect() in C:\wamp\www\testmysql.php on line 2". I have looked in the PHP INI files inside both PHP versions, and I'm fairly sure the relevant information is there. At least, there are parts inside that mention MySQL! Perhaps somebody could clarify exactly what information should be present? Also, when visiting a page that called phpinfo(), I noticed that the 'Loaded Configuration File' was pointing to C:\wamp\bin\php\php5.3.5\php.ini, even though I have enabled the older PHP version. I've stopped and started Apache, too, and that hasn't made a difference. Is anybody able to offer any assistance? Anything at all would be great; I'm not very good at messing around with Apache/

• Mod_Rewrite w Apache mod_jrun22.so & ColdFusion 9 on cPanel

  How can I utilize mod_rewrite at either the httpd.conf level or per-directory level when mod_jrun22 seems to have short-stopped the rewrite process for ColdFusion pages? I have a ColdFusion 9 based site running on Centos 5.8 w cPanel. cPanel uses EasyApache 3 to manage virtual host containers and as such the conf for mod_jrun22.so, /usr/local/apache/conf/includes/pre_main_global.conf, is loaded prior to the main httpd.conf with the domain specific rules for the container. My assertion is that .cfm pages are failing to be rewritten due to the mod_jk22.so module having priority in the directive chain. To note, I also have a WordPress blog in the site where the rewrites appear to be working fine. For example the following code to remove the index file works fine for php and fails with cfm ... .htaccess under /blog/ : This works Options -Indexes -Multiviews <IfModule mod_rewrite.c> RewriteEngine On RewriteBase /blog/ RewriteRule ^index\.php$ - [L] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule . /blog/index.php [L] </IfModule> .htaccess under / : This does not work as expected. • Library conflict in Mac OS X

  I was trying to install the ImageMagick library on Mac OS X Snow Leopard, and first I tried port and, after it failed, homebrew. It updated some dependencies and installed ImageMagick without problems. So far so good. The problem came when I ran Apache. I got the following error in the system log: 07/04/11 12:55:15 org.apache.httpd[41841] httpd: Syntax error on line 115 of /private/etc/apache2/httpd.conf: Cannot load /opt/local/apache2/modules/libphp5.so into server: dlopen(/opt/local/apache2/modules/libphp5.so, 10): Library not loaded: /opt/local/lib/libpng12.0.dylib\n Referenced from: /opt/local/apache2/modules/libphp5.so\n Reason: image not found I checked the /opt/local/lib and surprise! I don't have the libpng12.0 but the libpng14.0. So, as far as I can tell, something went wrong installing the ImageMagick library. Now, I can't find a way to rollback to the previous libraries, other than copying them from the backup. Do you know if is there a way to recover the previous state or reinstall Apache? Or is this just a corrupt state and I must reinstall OS X?

• Running Solr on VPS problem

  I have a VPS with Ubuntu OS. I run solr om my local machine (windows xp laptop) just fine. I have configured Jetty, and Solr just the same way as on my computer, but on the server. I have also downloaded the JRE and installed it on the server. However, whenever I try to run the start.jar file, the PuTTY terminal shows a bunch of text but gets stuck. I could pase the text here but it is very long, so unless somebody wants to see it I wont. Also, I cant view the solr admin page at all. Does anybody have experience in this kind of problem? Maybe java isn't correctly installed? It is a VPS so maybe installation is different. • Xamp on ubuntu serves php source for root url only

  Hey, Okay, so installed xamp on my ubuntu machine, started it up and everything worked. Apache ran my php app just fine (including requests to the root url "/"). However, after the first reboot since installing, when I request "http://localhost/" apache serves up the index php page as a phtml source file. All other urls (like "http://localhost/login") work as expected. Backgound: The only modification I made to xamp was to setup a vhost for my app. The app uses an .htaccess file where I define some rewrite rules (the app is an MVC framework and all urls are rewritten to a single entry point php file). I'm using Xamp because I need php = 5.3.0. I know apache will serve up the source of a php file when it doesn't know to process php files. But the config does indeed have "AddType application/x-httpd-php .php" and as I said, the app works for all urls except the root "/" (and only since I've rebooted). The .htaccess file does contain a DirectoryIndex directive. xamp 1.3.7a Ubuntu 9.10 Any ideas?

• D-Link wireless router losing outbound data

  I have a Linux box running the Apache web server behind a D-Link wireless router (nothing fancy, just standard kit that comes with Virgin Media broadband). My issue is that when requesting web pages (from within the network or via the web), the back end of the page seems to be being dropped. For example, I tried to display a text-only file, and all I could get was the first 40-70% of the file (it changed slightly with each refresh). The apache access logs show that only part of the data was being sent (~6000 bytes instead of the 12000+ bytes of the file). Removing my router from the equation fixes the issue and I can download any files no matter the size with no problems. My theory is that the uploaded packets are either being dropped or held up by the config of the router. Is there anything I can do to alleviate the problem? (Perhaps a way of reconfiguring the router to upload packets harder/better/faster/stronger or an option in apache that provides a workaround) As a last resort I will get a second NIC for my Linux box and turn it into a router, but that would mean the box will be on 24/7... not the most ideal of circumstances.   I currently have a long running process that I am trying to analyze with Perf4J. I currently have it writing results in CSV format to its own log file using the AsyncCoalescingStatisticsAppender and a StatisticsCsvLayout on the file appender. My question is; when I try and use the --graph option from the command line (using the perf4j jar) it isn't populating the data points- it isn't populating anything. Are my appenders set incorrectly? • Jboss logging issue

  I'm Working as deployer and server administrator. We use Jboss 4.0x AS to deploy our applications. The issue I'm facing is, Whenever we redeploy/restart the server, server.log is getting created but after sometime the logging goes off. Yes it is not at all updating the server.log file. Due to this, we could not trace the other critical issues we have. Actually we have two separate nodes and we do deploy/restarting the server separately on two nodes. We are facing the issue in both of our test and production environment. I could not trace out where exactly the issue is. Could you please help me in resolving the issue? If we have any other issues, we can check the log files. If log itself is not getting updated/logged, how can we move further in analyzing the issues without the recent/updated logs? • Jboss logging issue - pl check this

  I’m Working as deployer and server administrator. We use Jboss 4.0x AS to deploy our applications. The issue I'm facing is, Whenever we redeploy/restart the server, server.log is getting created but after sometime the logging goes off. Yes it is not at all updating the server.log file. Due to this, we could not trace the other critical issues we have. Actually we have two separate nodes and we do deploy/restarting the server separately on two nodes. We are facing the issue in both of our test and production environment. I could not trace out where exactly the issue is. Could you please help me in resolving the issue? If we have any other issues, we can check the log files. If log itself is not getting updated/logged, how can we move further in analyzing the issues without the recent/updated logs?   I recently installed Apache 2.4 on my local machine, together with PHP 5.4.8 using PHP-FPM. • Problem with apache + ssl: length mismatch error and ocasional bad request

  we migrated a server from slicehost to linode recently, we copied the config from one server to the other. • Translate Basic Config.groovy log4j DSL to external log4j.properties

  The following is a basic log4j configuration inside Config.groovy using the log4j DSL with Grails 1.2, it works as expected (log all errors to the given file): log4j = { appenders { file name:'file', file:"c:/error.log" } error 'grails.app' root { error 'file' } } How would one translate this into a properties style log4j configuration file? The following does not work: log4j.rootLogger=ERROR, FA log4j.appender.FA=org.apache.log4j.FileAppender log4j.appender.FA.File=C:/error.log log4j.logger.grails.app=ERROR, FA I suspect it has something to do with the translation of error 'grails.app' but I really don't know. If it makes any difference, the properties file is configured externally: grails.config.locations = ["file:${basedir}/extconf/log4j.properties"] All I really want is an external log4j properties file which logs all application exceptions to a file.

• Apache is reponding a blank white page

  I have the following situation: A site hosted in apache 2.4, with ssl, that works like a charm for a while now, but out of no where, without modifications to the site, apache started serving random blank pages. The workaround this is to delete the cookies of the browser or restart the browser. I've switched the vitualhost to log in debug mode but it didn't got me anywhere. • Using %v in Apache LogFormat definition matches ServerName instead of specific vhost requested

  We have an application which uses a DNS wildcard, i.e. *.app.example.com. We're using Apache 2.2 on Ubuntu Hardy. The relevant parts of the Apache config are as follows. In /etc/apache2/httpd.conf: LogFormat "%v %h %l %u %t \"%r\" %>s %b \"%{Referer}i\" \"%{User-Agent}i\"" vlog In /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/app.example.com: ServerName app.example.com ServerAlias *.app.example.com ... CustomLog "|/usr/sbin/vlogger -s access.log /var/log/apache2/vlogger" vlog Clients access this application using their own URL, e.g. company1.app.example.com, company2.app.example.com, etc. Previously, the %v in the LogFormat directive would match the hostname of the client request, and we'd get several subdirectories under /var/log/apache2/vlogger corresponding to the various client URLs in use. Now, %v appears to be matching the ServerName value, so we only get one log under /var/log/apache2/vlogger/app.example.com. This breaks our logfile analysis because the log file has no indication of which client the log relates to. I can fix this easily by changing the LogFormat to this: LogFormat "%{Host}i %h %l %u %t \"%r\" %>s %b \"%{Referer}i\" \"%{User-Agent}i\"" vlog This will use the HTTP Host: header to tell vlogger which subdirectory to create the logs in and everything will be fine. The only concern I have is that this has worked in the past and I can't find any indication that this has changed recently. Is anyone else using a similar config, i.e. wildcard + vlogger and using %v? Is it working fine?

• How to import certificate for Apache + LDAPS?

  I am trying to get ldaps to work through Apache 2.2.17 (Windows Server 2008). If I use ldap (plain text) my configuration works great. AuthLDAPURL "ldaps://gc-hca.corpad.net:3269/dc=hca,dc=corpad,dc=net?sAMAccountName?sub" AuthType Basic AuthName "USE YOUR WINDOWS ACCOUNT" AuthBasicProvider ldap AuthUserFile /dev/null require valid-user </Location> I also tried the other encryption choices besides CA_DER just to be safe, with no luck. Finally, I also needed this with Apache tomcat. For tomcat I used the tomcat JRE and ran a line like this: keytool -import -trustcacerts -keystore cacerts -storepass changeit -noprompt -alias mycert -file Trusted_Root_Certificate.cer After doing the above line ldaps worked greate via tomcat. This lets me know that my certificate is a-ok. Update: Both ldap modules are turned on, since using ldap instead of ldaps works fine. When I run a git clone this is the error returned: C:\Tempgit clone http://eqb9718@localhost/git/Liferay.git Cloning into Liferay... Is there any more verbose logging I can turn on or better tests to do?
