• Setting objects (not users) inactive after period of time in asp.net mvc

  This question is mainly to verify my current idea. I have a series of objects which I want to be active for a specified amount of time. For instance objects like ads which are shown in the ad space only for the amount of time bought, objects in search results which should only pop up when active, and frontpage posts which should be set to inactive after a prespecified time. My current idea is to just give those type of objects a StartDate and EndDate and filter the search routines to only show results which fall in the range StartDate < currentDate < EndDate. Is this the normal structure or should there be some sort of auto-routine which routinely checks for objects which are "over-time" and set a property "inactive" to true or something. Seems like this approach is such a hassle since I need a checker which runs say, every 5 minutes, to scan all DB objects. Seems like a bad idea to me. So is the first structure the most commonly used or are there any other options? When searching on google or SO the search queries only return results setting users inactive.

So it seems that JavaScript can successfully understand my regular expression. But when I do a postback, and the modelstate.Isvalid() gets called. My date isn't valid anymore. So I'm guessing that when .NET performs the matching with the regEx it doesn't match. My question: Why does this regular expression match on the client side but not on the server side?

  There are lots of articles and discussions about the differences between ASP.NET WebForms and ASP.NET MVC that compare the relative merits of the two frameworks. I have a different question for anyone who has experience using WebForms that has since moved to MVC: What is the number one thing that WebForms had, that MVC doesn't, that you really miss? Edit No-one has mentioned the WebForms validation controls. I am now working on some code that has a few dependant validation rules and implementing client-side validation for these is proving slow.

• Using the Callback Method on a View in ASP.NET MVC

  I have a master page with that code: public string CallbackMethod; protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { CallbackMethod = Page.ClientScript.GetCallbackEventReference(this, "message", "Dodanie", "context", true); } /other code here/ then, in the View (which is based on that master page) I need to invoke the CallbackMethod string, but the problem is, the framework firstly renders the View, and then invokes the Page_Load method. As the obvious result, the error appears: the name 'CallbackMethod' does not exist in the current context. How do I fix this?

• MVC Rendered Partial, how to get partial/view model in main model post to controller

  I have a text file and when users upload the file, the controller action method parses that file using state machine and uses a generic list to store some values. I pass this back to the view in the form of an IEnumerable. Within my main view, based on this ienumerable list I render a partail view to iterate items and display labels and a textarea. Users could add their input in the text area.   Hello, I am trying to fire off a javascript method using the OnBegin AjaxOption in an Ajax method. However, when debugging with firebug the callback in unable to find the Javascript method and I do not know why. My code is simple, first I use a basic Ajax method like this: <%= Ajax.ActionLink("Testing", "Testing", new AjaxOptions { OnBegin = "RunThisThing" }) % Then under it I decalre this script. <script type="text/javascript"> function RunThisThing { alert("WORK") } </script> Yet when I try running the page and clicking on the link, Firebug tells me "RunThisThing is not defined". • Custom Model Validator for MVC

  I am trying to add a custom model validation at the property level but need to pass in two values. Below is my class definition and validation implementation. When it runs, the "value" in the IsValid method is always null. I can get this working at the class level but the property level is causing me issues. What am I missing? But I still not found an elegant way to filter UI components (e.g. widgets, form elements, tables, etc) using the current user roles without contaminate the view with business logic. same applies for model binding. Example Form: Product Creation Fields: Name Price Discount Roles: Role Administrator Is allowed to see and modify the Name field Is allowed to see and modify the Price field Is allowed to see and modify the Discount Role Administrator assistant Is allowed to see and modify the Name Is allowed to see and modify the Price Fields shown in each role are different, and model binding needs to ignore the discount field for 'Administrator assistant' role.   Hello, I have a Java application and I want to implement an Undo/Redo option. the value that I want to stock and that I want to be able to recover is an integer. My Class Model implements the interface StateEditable and I have to redefine the 2 functions restoreState(Hashtable<?, ?> state) and storeState(Hashtable<Object, Object> state) but I don't know what to put on them. It will be really great if somebody can help me to do that.   When a user logs in to my site, I create a cookie with some info in it. However, whenever they change page from logging in, the cookie loses it's value. Cookie is still there but it's empty. I've checked my code and the cookie doesn't get rewritten by anything I've done. Does anyone have any idea to why the cookie becomes empty when the page is changed?

• Using Silverlight for Views in ASP.Net MVC - a bad idea?

  I'm currently writing a small application for use internally at my office. I started out teaching myself some MVC (I've been a C# dev for 3 years). One of the main requirements is editable grids - I quickly realised that silverlight (i have zero silverlight experience) could be a big help in this. I've managed to create a proof of concept of getting MVC and silverlight to talk back an forth by combining these two techniques: Creating a Rest API using MVC MVC SilverLight I also got some help on stackoverflow: silverlight-grids-mvc-http-post Essentially all I'm doing is embedding a silver light object in a view. Serializing the Model data as JSON and passing it to silverlight(using intit params written into the response). The silverlight object can post data back to the controller as JSON. So far this seems like it could work quite well. However I am a bit concerned that I could be painting myself into a corner with this approach, as in I don't have much experience with either technology so I'm worried I'm going get hit with something further down the line that I won't be able to work around. Has anybody else tried doing this? Any advice would be much appreciated!

  I have an actionlink that on click im passing a List of objects to a controller action. Example: View: Html.ActionLink("TestLink", "TestMethod", "Test", Model.SampleList, null) TestController: public ActionResult TestMethod(List sampleList) { return View(sampleList); } When I do this I get a null sampleList. I can pass a single complex object fine just not a collection of it. Do I need the correct routing for this? The reason I'm doing this is instead of passing an id and do a look up in the controller action, I just pass in the data.

  Hi, I'm getting started with unit testing and trying to do some TDD. I've read a fair bit about the subject and written a few tests. I just want to know if the following is the right approach. I want to add the usual "contact us" facility on my web site. You know the thing, the user fills out a form with their email address, enters a brief message and hits a button to post the form back. The model binders do their stuff and my action method accepts the posted data as a model. The action method would then parse the model and use smtp to send an email to the web site administrator infoming him/her that somebody filled out the contact form on their site. Now for the question .... In order to test this, would I be right in creating an interface IDeliver that has a method Send(emailAddress, message) to accept the email address and message body. Implement the inteface in a concrete class and let that class deal with smtp stuff and actually send the mail. If I add the inteface as a parameter to my controller constructor I can then use DI and IoC to inject the concrete class into the controller. But when unit testing I can create a fake or mock version of my IDeliver and do assertions on that. The reason I ask is that I've seen other examples of people generating interfaces for SmtpClient and then mocking that. Is there really any need to go that far or am I not understanding this stuff?

  Hi, I'm trying to rewrite the url: https://mydomain/phone-append to https://mydomain/Service/PhoneAppend using the following rule: <rewrite> <rules> <rule name="Phone Append"> <match url="phone-append" /> <action type="Rewrite" url="/Services/Index" appendQueryString="true" /> </rule> </rules> </rewrite> The rule works fine if the rewrite url is /Services but when I change it to /Services/PhoneAppend I get a page not found error.   I'm wondering if it is possibile to customize routing in a way that all requests are evaluated by a piece of code, redirected to the relevant controller if a match is found or passed to next rout in list if not found. sample request: /my coolpage/another one the code searches and determine that the right controller for this is Page, action is "list" and id is "123" and so redirects another request: /products/list/5 code finds no match al passes it back to next route that knows how to handle it... any idea on how to do this?

• How to handle similar items in rails MVC?

  I'm working on building a pretty simple site mainly as an exercise in learning more about rails. You can see my rough progress at statific.com. It's working pretty much as I wanted it for keeping track of server information, but now I'd like to expand it to other things, next on the list being firewalls. I can pretty easily duplicate all the models, views, etc.. that I have for my servers. The problem I see with that is that it isn't very DRY since most of the code would look the same, the only difference would be the attributes I have setup for firewalls would be different than for servers. I know in plain ruby this is pretty simple, you can have a 'Product' w/ common attributes ('manufacturer', 'model') and then have children with more specific attributes. Does the same type of concept exist for rails, or am I just over thinking this?
