  Here is your chance to get your picture on the big screen during my MIX11 presentation in April this year. I need to create a small repository of sample data for my demos. So instead of tapping in my imagination and creating dummy users (or reusing past information I already used in other demos), I thought I would appeal to the amazing community: Send me an email with the following information. I will include the first 30 users into my sample data repository and use your info in my demo. • Using scanf() in C++ programs is faster than using cin ?

  Hello, I don't know if this is true, but when I was reading FAQ on one of the problem providing sites, I found something, that poke my attention: Check your input/output methods. In C++, using cin and cout is too slow. Use these, and you will guarantee not being able to solve any problem with a decent amount of input or output. Use printf and scanf instead. Can someone please clarify this? Is really using scanf() in C++ programs faster than using cin something ? If yes, that is it a good practice to use it in C++ programs? I thought that it was C specific, though I am just learning C++...

• Help with a formula for Google Adwords [closed]

  Hi guys, This question is more about maths and algorythms in Google Adwords but guess it's the most appropriate community in SE to ask this. I am creating a spreadsheet to calculate Adword formulas and I am stuck in how to calculate the Monthly Net Income for each keyword. I have created a formula which calculates it but can't figure out how to limit the Monthly Budget. The formula I've created is this one: Monthly Net Income = ( DailyClicks x ConversionRate x SaleProfit) - ( CPC x DailyClicks ) There is an example of the formula in the file which is a Google Spreadsheet publicly available here: https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AnQMyM9XJ0EidDB6TUF0OTdaZ2dFb2ZGNmhQeE5lb0E&hl=en_GB#gid=2 (you can create your own copy going to File Make a copy...) The site was taken over by spammers, and was essientially a ghost town, but I reworked it to bring a technology topics aggregator. • Preparing to release code as open-source

  I have developed a fully functional tool which I would like not only to share with anyone interested but also get support from the community. This tool is cross-platform, written in C++ with Qt, the code is well commented but I still lack any documentation. There are also some small issues and improvements to be made before I can call it a stable, final version. What are the first steps that I have to take to release code as open-source and attracting people interested in contributing? This is my first serious attempt to release open-source code and I really don't know where to start. Should I just push it to Github put together a small wiki and pray for the best?

  A couple of bits of news. I did a number of updates to the HackingSilverlightCodeBrowser here:http://www.hackingsilverlight.net/HackingSilverlightCodeBrowser.html including things like MEF and IsolatedStorage. As to the community edition of the book, I'm still trying to get some contributors to finish. • Chinese bots in my forum

  I have a small community forum that doesn't really get posts or any real traffic. The only thing that happens on the regular is bots with Chinese IPs signing up gibberish usernames. Most bots don't make it past the captcha but some do. I try to stay on top of this by banning IPs and ranges of IPs but it doesn't really seem to help. The bots never post anything so what are they doing? Should I be worried? Should I keep banning IPs or is it futile?

• Receive input over TCP/IP and use it to update HTML

  This has got to be a FAQ, so can someone please just direct me to a "network programming for dummies" URL? The server wants to push information to a client or broadcast to all, when an event happens - as opposed to the clients constantly polling the server "just in case". The client then updates a browser page display. How do I do that? (toldya it was a n00b question) Should I have a thread which receives info on a socket and then writes it to a database which the browser display (PHP) can process with an HTML refresh tag, or what? Sorry to sound so dumb.

• "BAD idea" warning when trying to recover Grub, after Windows removed it

  Tried sudo grub-install on sda1 but it complained about being a BAD IDEA. I had to install windows for a work related issue so I used a separate disk (I had used it for ubuntu on this computer, but bought a bigger disk so installed ubuntu on that and left the old one in in case I needed an old file). Windows installed fine but overwrote Grub. So if I choose the Ubuntu disk to boot first in BIOS I get a blank screen. I googled and followed this advice: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RecoveringUbuntuAfterInstallingWindows However, when I get down to this section: sudo grub-install --root-directory=/media/0d104aff-ec8c-44c8-b811-92b993823444 /dev/sda1 I get this: Attempting to install GRUB to a partition instead of the MBR. This is a BAD idea… --recheck does nothing. Any ideas?

• Is there ongoing work in the kernel team to improve battery life under linux?

  I have read in some forums that the kernel team is working on improving battery life and energy efficiency in linux. Unfortunately our community really lags behind windows and mac in that regard. I would like to read about the reasons why this difference exists with other platforms. Is it purely due to closed hardware specs from vendors or does it has to be with kernel design issues? Apple devices with unix cores have amazing battery times, but they also design their own hardware...just want to understand this issues in a less technical way I know that recent kernel updates in Ubuntu have improved the battery life in most computers, but I was wondering if there is still development going on and where can I read more about it.   I am planning to set up a streaming server purely for internet radio using Icecast2. what software packages do i require during Ubuntu installation and any third party apps i may require. I am going to use BUTT(Broadcast using this tool) Encoder and would like to be able to run BUTT on any computer so that other people can broadcast to my server from anywhere. I am looking for tips or tutorials on how to achieve the above. I mainly need info on cofiguring Ubuntu Server and icecast2. Also GUI? if so what one. Preferablly lightweight. • How do I get the WinForm Designer to totally ignore a property on a custom control?

  This must be a FAQ, but I can’t find a duplicate question! There are lot of different attributes that control what the WinForm Designer does with properties on a custom control, I am never clear on the one I should use in this case. I am looking for: Designer does not show property in grid Designer does not read value of property Designer does not set property to default value E.g. Designer behaves as if the property was not there. Designer does not complain if it has already done one of the above before the attributes were added (hard!) Background. The code that is giving me the problem is: this.eventListControl.FilterSets = ((SystList<FilterSet>)(resources.GetObject("eventListControl.FilterSets"))); The FilterSets property should never have been touched by the winforms designer; it is now not Serializable and MsDev falls over every time a form that used the eventListControl is changed!

  I want to learn how to program. A main stream programming language such as Java, C++/C# is my primary target. Currently, I am a high school student planning to take programming, Digital electronics courses next semester. My biggest problem is that I do not know where to start and I have no one to consult with. Should I take a course at my local community college this summer?   I want to add the ability to send reminders to people via email and SMS for specific events that they have signed up for on a web application that I am building. The email part is not difficult, but I am wondering where to find a good solution for sending SMS messages. It would also be a plus if this solution allowed two-way SMS communication with my web application so that people would be able to reply with a CONFIRM or CANCEL type of a message. Has anyone implemented something like this? Does anyone know of good tools out there? • How to create and maintain patch on Debian package?

  I want to patch on Trac package. I know how to patch and rebuild the package, but there are some things I don't understand very well. My patch is something dangerous and not likely to commit back to the community. So, let me just say, it's a very private patch. But, I want my patch keep working when the Ubuntu packages upgrade. (Should I apt-get source trac and move my patch to the new version of source directory each time the Trac upgrades?) I see there is a patch/ directory (many using quilt I guess) in debian/, but I don't know how to use it? Will debuild automatic apply all patches in the patch/ directory? And what about dpkg-buildpackage? Is there some environ variables to control the selection of patches to apply?
