  • Is there any copyleft (GPL-like) license with both the Affero and Lesser modifications?

    Looking for a license that covers public network service, like AGPLv3, but like LGPL isn't infectious. Basically I wrote some useful helper functions I want to allow to be used in any work, including closed-source software, but I want to require improvements to MY CODE to be released back to me and the general public. Can you recommend a suitable license? It should also include some of the other AGPL-permitted restrictions (attribution, indemnity), either in the license text or as permitted variations.

  • messed up PATH and can't login

    I was screwing around and trying to add some environment variables to my path. I must have made a type or something because once I logged out, I could not lob back in. I know I'm not on caps lock or anything and in fact if I type the wrong password I am informed of this. However, when I type the correct password the desktop starts to load and then loops back to the login prompt. There also no other users on the machine for me to log in as other than guest which does not have the right permissions for me to fix things. Any ideas on where to go from here?

  • Port forward based on external IP (for VPS hosting)

    What I want to do is to host a VPS. First, I'd like to set up a static IP address that forwards to my home IP address (so I can have more than one IP coming into my house). How can I do this without contacting my ISP (and is it even possible?; I don't care about paying for something that does this). Once I have the extra external IP address, how can I forward it to my VPS? How is my router supposed to differentiate between two separate external IP addresses?

  • Why are graphics so slow/jerky/lagged with an ATI 4250?

    Never had a problem with Maverick, always very fast. I upgrade to Natty and the graphics seem to be very lagged. CPU, load, and memory usage is low, all graphics are choppy and lagged though. I have the proprietary driver installed and everything. Alt-Tabbing takes 3-5 seconds for the dialog to popup, zooming in with compiz zoom makes things very slow. I never had any of these problems with 10.10 Thanks

    When I boot up my system, I don't get a login screen, just the boot log scrolling by, repeating after a while lines like this: * Starting anac(h)ronistic cron [ OK ] * Stopping anac(h)ronistic cron [ OK ] I can change to another virtual terminal, and start lightdm from there with sudo lightdm restart or sudo start lightdm. Other people with similar problems had just lightdm in their /etc/x11/default-display-manager. I've checked mine and it has /usr/sbin/lightdm in there, so that's not the problem.

  • Windows 7/ 12.04 Dual Boot Mess

    I am certainly new to ubuntu (linux in general)... I added ubuntu 12.04 as a dual boot to a brand new desktop which had win 7 pre-installed. Both work well Then I tried to change the order of the boot menu to make Ubuntu first and Win7 second... I did this from the windows side (it seems that my setup is relying on windows bootloader, which I don't think I need to change) using the built-in startup manager (I think that's what windows calls it- it's in the control panel). I set Ubuntu as first (default if no user input). then... I ACCIDENTALLY ("hmmm...I wonder what this button does?") set the menu timeout to "0" Now, I cannot change the menu timeout (because I cannot get into windows) and without doing so, I cannot select windows as the OS I would like to boot(I cannot get into windows). Any Ideas?

  • How to connect to the internet via command line or graphical utility given I can't click at the top of the screen?

    My Ubuntu 12.04 installation has an input problem resulting preventing me from clicking near the top of the screen. That is, there is an unclickable area, circa 60 pixels high and stretching all the way across the screen. I will ask about this in a later question. For now, I would just like to be able to connect to the internet, given this limitation. I am able to access the network connections application by hitting the super key and typing "network connections". There is a LAN and a wireless network available. The network icon in the bar at the top of the screen shows an empty wedge, which I suppose means that wireless is off. I've attached the cable for the Ethernet connection, but it does not seem to have connected automatically. How can I figure out what's going on? (I'll happily edit in the output of any relevant terminal commands.) Thank you.

  • dedicated domain name VS just folders under a single domain?

    I run WordPress-Multisite for several sites. Each of these sites resolve under a single domain, e.g. example.com/foo/, example.com/bar/. I also have domain names for these e.g. foo.com, bar.com. which are currently redirects, so if a user hits foo.com, they are redirected (301) to example.com/foo/. My question is, should it be the other way around? should I use the dedicated domain names directly? What are the pros/cons of putting multiple sites under a single domain vs their own dedicated domains. I guess im asking with SEO and findability in mind.

  • FTP won't open a connection to client

    I am running Windows server 2008 on Ubuntu server 12.04.1 via devstack and I am trying to download a file from an ftp server using the windows command line ftp client. When I run the ftp get command I get the following error message: 500 I won't open a connection to 10.0.0.2 (only to XX.XX.XX.XX) 425 No data connection 10.0.0.2 is the internal IP address of the instance, whereas XX.XX.XX.XX is the external address. Is there anyway to make the ftp client use the external address for the data connection, or alternatively have the client establish the connection? Thanks

  • Why does my mic boost automatically go to 100 on every boot?

    When my computer turns on, it automatically sets the "mic boost" sound setting to 100. This causes a loud static sound in my speakers. I can manually go to alsamixer and turn the mic boost down manually, but I would prefer it if I didn't have to do this every time I turn the computer on. I've tried running sudo alsactl store after fixing the settings, and this does save them, but I have to run sudo alsactl restore to restore the settings. This means that I have to manually fix the sound every time I start the computer anyway, so it isn't really a fix. I tried putting sudo alsactl restore in my startup programs, but that didn't seem to fix anything. I'm running Ubuntu 12.04, but I started having this problem before upgrading from 11.10. I'm using a Sony Vaio laptop. I'm not really sure what made it start; it seemed like I just started having the problem randomly one day. Any help would be appreciated!     I have an X79 motherboard and a GTX 670. I have tried to install every combination of Ubuntu 11.10, 12.04, 12.10, Linux Mint 13 and the Nvidia Driver 304.43, 295.xx, etc. I have read everything and pretty much tried everything...drivers from the site, PPAs, some random scripts, editing the xorg.conf file. It has been four days of futile effort. Should I just wait...or something? Has anyone gotten hardware like this to work?

    I'm kinda new here, so please bear with me. My wireless driver is acting very weird. It shows my router's name, but when it is connecting (after entering the correct password), the icon on the tray is like, refreshing every once in a second, while showing the animation that it is connecting. And after a few seconds, error message come up saying that wireless network is disconnected. I installed the drive through "additional drivers". What info do you need?   • Alfa AWUS036H USB wireless adapter not recognized

    The Alfa AWUS036H USB wireless adapter will not be recognized by my netbook (Ubuntu 14.04, Asus X201E). As I understand it, the drivers should already be built in to this version of Linux, but I tried a make/make install of the latest Realtek drivers (as mentioned on How do I install drivers for the Alfa AWUS036H USB wireless adapter?) and it didn't work. I then followed the advice of this thread (ALFA AWUS036NH driver) and did a make/make install of the most up-to-date backport of the drivers, but that didn't work. At this point I tried a series of commands from this thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2187780) in an attempt to identify the problem, but at no point could I get the laptop to ever recognize the USB adapter. I have also troubleshot the USB cable itself, tried both the USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports on the laptop, have never received an error message regarding a need to update the firmware, and have seemingly successfully installed all manner of variation of Realtek drivers which were supposed to make the adapter work. (I also tried to delete/clean up after each install, in the hope I wasn't making things worse.) Not sure what I should do next. Please let me know if I need to post any more information.   • C# remote web request certificate error

    Hi. I am currently integrating a payment gateway into an application. Following a successful transaction the remote payment gateway posts details of the transaction back to my application (ITN). It posts to a HttpHandler that is used to read and validate the data. Part of the validation performed is a POST made by the handler to a validation service provided by the payment gateway. This effectively posts some of the original form values received back to the payment gateway to ensure they are valid.   • Nested Sortable JQuery list doesn't work in IE while it does in FF

    Hello everybody, While I'm using this site quite often as a resource for jQuery related problems I can't seem to find an answer this time. So here is my first post. During daytime at work I'm developing an informationsystem for generating MS Word documents. One of the modules I'm developing is for defining a default chapterselection for the table of contents and selecting texts by the given chapters. A user can submit new chapters and if necessary, add them as childchapter to a parent, flag them as 'adopt in TOC' and link a default text (from another module) to the chapter. My chapterlist is retreived recursively from a MySQL table and could look something like this: <ul class="sortableChapterlist"> <li>1</li> <li>2 <ul class="sortableChapterlist"> <li>2.1</li> <li>2.2</li> <li>2.3 <ul class="sortableChapterlist"> <li>2.3.1</li> <li>2.3.2</li> </ul> </li> </ul> </li> </ul> In FireFox the code works like a charm but IE (7) doesn't seem to like it that much. I'm only able to correctly drag arround the mainchapters. When attempting to drag a subchapter, no matter it's level, the correspondending mainchapter lifts up with some child, never all. This is the jQuery code I'm using to accomplish the task: $(function(){ $(".sortableChapterlist").sortable({ opacity: 0.7, helper: 'clone', cursor: 'move' }); $(".sortableChapterlist").selectable(); $(".sortableChapterlist").disableSelection(); }); Does anybody have some ideas about this?   • please explain NHibernate HiLo

    I'm struggling to get my head round how the HiLo generator works in NHibernate. I've read the explanation here which made things a little clearer. My understanding is that each SessionFactory retrieves the high value from the database. This improves performance because we have access to IDs without hitting the database. The explanation from the above link also states: For instance, supposing you have a "high" sequence with a current value of 35, and the "low" number is in the range 0-1023. Then the client can increment the sequence to 36 (for other clients to be able to generate keys while it's using 35) and know that keys 35/0, 35/1, 35/2, 35/3... 35/1023 are all available. How does this work in a web application as don't I only have one SessionFactory and therefore one hi value. Does this mean that in a disconnected application you can end up with duplicate (low) ids in your entity table? In my tests I used these settings: <id name="Id" unsaved-value="0"> <generator class="hilo"/> </id> I ran a test to save 100 objects. The IDs in my table went from 32768 - 32868. The next hi value was incremented to 2. Then I ran my test again and the Ids were in the range 65536 - 65636. First off, why start at 32768 and not 1, and secondly why the jump from 32868 to 65536? Now I know that my surrogate keys shouldn't have any meaning but we do use them in our application. Why can't I just have them increment nicely like a SQL Server identity field would. Finally can someone give me an explanation of how the max_lo parameter works? Is this the maximum number of low values (entity ids in my head) that can be created against the high value? This is one topic in NHibernate that I have struggled to find documentation for. I read the entire NHibernate in action book and it still doesn't go into how this works in any detail. Thanks Ben
