• Will Dolphin emulator run (smoothly) on this machine?

  Product Specs: Intel® NM10 Express chipset /w Intel® Atom® D525 (dual-core, 1.8 GHz) I think the most I can put in there for RAM is 4 GB. (They don't make 8 GB SODIMM do they?) The Dolphin site is pretty vague about requirements: Windows XP or higher, or Linux, or MacOSX Intel Fast CPU with SSE2. GPU with Pixel Shader 2.0 or greater. Some integrated graphics chips work but it depends on the model (and only with DirectX 9). I'm trying to make a light-weight quiet little machine for streaming video and playing eumulators, and I'm trying to figure out the minimum requirements I will need to do what I want. I know I'm not supposed to ask for product recommendations here, so if you could just advise the minimum requirements in terms of CPU, graphics card, and RAM, that'd be helpful.

• 12.04 kernel panic

  Hello I'm having trouble with Ubuntu 12.04. I downloaded the ISO and burned it into a CD and tried to install Ubuntu, but during the installation process, I got this message Kernel panic-not syncing Attempted to kill init! pid:1,comm:init not tainted 3.2.0-23-generic-pae#36-ubunru then it says switching to console text, and it just hangs in there and nothing happens. I burned another CD with Ubuntu 10.04, but I get a different problem: Ubuntu just gets stuck at the splash screen with the 5 dots which move from red to white, and nothing happens. I was able to boot before with 10.04 but I recently upgraded my computer graphics card and power supply. please see my system specs.   I had a general question about streaming videos online; in particular, on YouTube. What really is required to smoothly stream videos at 360p or 480p? Then for that HD goodness, what really allows a computer to smoothly stream 720p and 1080p? I'm not too sure whether it's to do with the CPU (speed, # cores, cache size), GPU (chipset, VRAM, memory type) or even HDD (IDE vs SATA). What contributes to the ability to stream regular videos and, furthermore, high-definition videos online?

• Can I upgrade an Asus M51Sn laptop to 2x4GB of RAM? (DDR2)

  My Asus M51Sn has 2 RAM slots which currently have 1x1GB + 1x2GB DDR2-800 SODimm RAM modules installed. I've found out that 4GB DDR2 SODimm modules do exist, though they are impossible to find in local stores nere here, but I've found them in online stores like these: http://www.pccomponentes.com/g_skill_ddr2_800_pc2_6400_4gb_so_dimm.html They seem to meet the specification, so can I replace both my current modules with 2x4GB modules, and reach a total of 8GB? Or should I worry about some limit (e.g. 4GB max or 2GB per slot) imposed by the matherboard, chipset or whatever? (I currently use Ubuntu 12.04 32 bit, so I plan to use the pae kernel, which supposedly supports 4GB ram on a 32bit system; or I may consider switching tu 64bit ubuntu; the question is about hardware limitations, not OS limitations).

• Buying Video Card for 1600x900 monitor?

  I just bought a monitor for a relative's computer (Intel 82915G chipset) which should produce 1600x900. Though the current card can produce 1600x1200, there's no way (that I know of) to force it to produce 1600x900. Assuming buying a card would be a solution, how would one find a cheap video card that can do 1600x900? They don't seem to list the modes in most ads. If I'm missing something in Windows, please let me know, but I've looked around quite a bit and tried many things (including unsupported resolutions, etc).

• Cannot set monitor to native resolution

  problem is similar to so many other users, but solutions found do not work. Background: Fresh install of 12.04 (completely updated) on a Fit-PC2 (specs). Read in several places that the new 3.X kernel that 12.04 runs on has a new psb_gfx driver which supports the gma500 graphics card (poulsbo chipset). All's pretty much working (there are some glitches which are documented, so I won't raise them here), except for the screen resolution. My native monitor resolution is 1920X1080, but all I get is 1024x768. Output running xrandr: xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default Screen 0: minimum 1024 x 768, current 1024 x 768, maximum 1024 x 768 default connected 1024x768+0+0 0mm x 0mm 1024x768 0.0* Although I read that Ubuntu does not come with an xorg.conf file anymore, I also tried running sudo X :1 -configure, and here's the end of the output: Number of created screens does not match number of detected devices. Configuration failed. When I look in the xorg.conf.new file created in my home directory, it seems that for some reason X thinks I have two screens. Don't know what to do with that. Ideas anyone? • How do I make my Geforce GTS 250's power save mode stop causing audio stuttering?

  Whenever my GTS 250 enters its power save mode, downscaling its frequencies, my audio stutters. This affects both my onboard audio and my Audigy Soundblaster 2 ZS. Changing Windows power save mode options such as PCI-E link state power management or Power Management Mode in the nVidia control panel have no effect on this issue. Replacing the power supply had no effect on this issue. The BIOS is the latest version, and I have the latest motherboard chipset and graphics drivers installed. I do not overclock. I started to see this issue after I upgraded my rig from its Socket 939 board to a Socket 1156 board with a Core i5-750 while simultaneously upgrading from Vista to 7.

  I've just purchased a D-Link DWA-643 Xtreme N ExpressCard Notebook Adapter - but it can't connect to my wireless network The card is listed on the FSF website and - refer links below: http://www.fsf.org/resources/hw/index_html/net/wireless/index_html/cards.html http://www.dlink.com.au/products/?pid=550 Ubuntu see the card as using the Atheros AR5008 chipset - refer image below The card lights up and I can see that available wifi networks using this card - so it seems to 'just work' on ubuntu 12.04 but when i try and connect to my networks - it fails I've tried setting the network to all the different options (WEP, WPA2, no encryption, etc.. b/g/n ) but ubuntu sill cant connect to it I've also installed wicd but still couldn't connect Has anyone got a DWA-643 to work in Ubuntu? Or does anyone have any suggestion on how to get it to connect?? Any help would be greatly appreciated Note: the laptop has built in wifi but its broadcom, works but with dialup speed connection - and i've had nothign but trouble using the boardcom drivers so purchased the FSF recommended PCI expresscard as i hoped it would 'just work' on the latest Ubuntu i've have tried to disable the built in wifi - broadcom - but even with the broadcom uninstall and unavailable it didnt help the dlink to connect previously I had MAC address filtering on the router - i've added the dlinks MAC - and also disabled MAC address filtering - still no luck lspci output below: 18:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. • nVidia driver is not installed for x64 Windows 7 (Vaio VGN-SZ460N)

  I just upgraded memory to 4GB for Sony Vaio VGN-SZ460N laptop and trying to install Windows 7 x64. All works fine with default drivers, except video - I am not able to set resolution more than 1024x768. Technical specification says that this model is using: Chipset : Intel® 945GM Processor : NVIDIA® GeForce® Go 7400 notebook graphics processing unit (GPU) and Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 950 I was trying to use Intel 945GM driver, for Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and get error: This computer does not meet the mininum requirements for installing the software Also, I was trying to download nVidia GeForce Go 7400 x64 but it says that there is no compatible hardware. Actually, it has disclaimer that those drivers doesn't work for Sony vaio and recomendation to use OEM website. Sony website has only 32-bit version of driver which says that it cannot be installed and x64 should be used... Any ideas?

• cpufreq not available 11.10

  on 11.04 I had cpufreq working on my "AMD Turion(tm) 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-50 stepping 02" processors, however now on oneiric cpufreq won't load. The core temperature of my cpu is normally 40 c, but lately it's cooking away at 75-80+ c and the fan is always extremely loud even when cpu usage has at 0.4%. and after this dmesg | grep -i cpu I got: Brought up 2 CPUs Switch to broadcast mode on CPU1 Switch to broadcast mode on CPU0 Switched to NOHz mode on CPU #1 Switched to NOHz mode on CPU #0 ACPI: acpi_idle registered with cpuidle cpufreq-nforce2: No nForce2 chipset. cpuidle: using governor ladder cpuidle: using governor menu powernow-k8: Found 1 AMD Turion(tm) 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-50 (2 cpu cores) (version 2.20.00) I see something about governors and ladder there, does this mean the OS is able to scale my cpu's or not? If so is there a way I can determine it's working? I saw that for other users that the wrong module had been loaded and by disabling it they were able to get cpufreq loaded. • VGA no signal on LCD monitor attached to laptop

  I bought a new Asus vh242h LCD monitor for use with my lenevo T60 laptop running XP professional. Display info under control panel says "Intel(R) 945GM Express Chipset Family". I am connecting via VGA. When I connect the monitor I get "VGA no signal" and the monitor screen stays blank. I have selected the monitor as the display device on the laptop. The information on the monitor displays the correct screen resolution from the laptop, so the monitor is communicating in some way with the laptop. I've successfully tried the monitor with my Dell inspirion 1525 running Windows Vista. I've change the VGA cable to one I know works. Tried different resolutions. I cannot find and specific drivers on the internet for this monitor, so I assume it should work with Plug and Play. Does anyone know what the problem could be?

• 64 Bit Windows drivers for Inspiron 1720

  Dell doesn't seem to offer 64 bit drivers specifically for the Inspiron 1720 (laptop). I'm going to be upgrading from Vista 32-bit to Windows 7 64bit and I want to pull down the necessary stuff before hand. Are there any Dell systems that are similar enough to the Inspiron 1720 that I can use for a baseline to make sure I still have Ethernet and WiFi after the reinstall? It doesn't matter if they are for Vista 64 or Windows 7. Identified hardware: Processor: Intel mobile Core 2 Duo T7500 Chipset: Intel Mobile 965 Express Wifi: Intel Pro Wireless Drive Controller: Intel Matrix Graphics: nVidia GeForce 8600M GT Bluetooth: Dell TrueMobile 355 + EDR Ricoh card reader I think anything else, the default Windows drivers will be sufficient. • Monitor not detected after booting without monitor attached (12.04)

  I had a stable 12.04 machine running perfectly. The machine was booted without the monitor connected - since then the system always boots to low graphics mode. Onboard graphics (from lspci): VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03) Monitor: AOC e2450Swh Display widget shows monitor as laptop(!?) and system details shows graphics as Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 0x300) X-server log appears to show correct monitor detected. When I boot from a live CD I get full 3d graphics I've tried the monitor on a different machine - all OK. I've tried a different monitor on this machine - same problem. Between having a working system and a broken one there have been no updates and I have made no configuration changes... EDIT: I have come to the conclusion that the problem is caused by a known issue with lightDM hanging on battery check. I've managed to get 3D graphic working by switching to using GDM - not a solution but acceptable workaround. I would still like to know what is causing the problem and how I managed to get my system into this state!

• At the time of installing ubuntu, i am getting dark black screen only

  I am trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 LTS dual boot with Windows 7, but when i click on Try or even Install ubuntu, i am getting black screen only. I can't see any text or anything else. When i see my Laptop's screen from close look, ubuntu in the middle of screen shown but screen is dark black. So because of this i am unable to install Ubuntu on my laptop. Because there is no option shown for F6 key. My laptop is Acer aspire 4736, and my Video/Graphics card shows unknown by ubuntu. Please someone help me. Can changing or upgrading my laptop's graphic card solve this problem..?? If yes then, which graphic card should i go for which is supported by Ubuntu and other Linux distros? Please someone help.

• Problem setting up DL360G5 with scsi RAID

  I have a problem with reinstalling OS on a DL360G5. The BIOS [F9] do not detect any disc controllers and the HP SmartSetup did not find any compatible controllers. Inside the server, the two SCSI disks are conncted to a RAID controller using BCM8603 chipset. How is disc contoller supposed to be setup? I have tried to do a full BIOS reset. EDIT At the moment we suspect that the Smart Array controller E200i/412205-001 is broken. Are there any status LED's that indicate failure or success during start up? At the moment all LED's are off.

• How do multiple displays work on a AMD 785G / ATI HD 4200 motherboard?

  I just ordered a ASUS M4A785TD-V EVO which has the AMD 785G chipset and HD4200 integrated graphic. The board has VGA, DVI, and HDMI outputs. I'm wondering how many outputs I can run at once, and from what connectors? My guess is that I can only use the VGA, and either the DVI or the HDMI in a dual setup. But not the HDMI and the DVI at the same time. Is this correct? If I have devices plugged into both the HDMI and the DVI ports is there a way to choose between which port I want to use? I have a dual 19" monitor setup, as well as a LCD TV. I'd like to run the VGA and the DVI into my two monitors, and then the HDMI to my TV. Then when I want to watch something on the TV I'd like to be able to switch over from the DVI to the HDMI. Is this possible with out crawling under my desk and unplugging/plugging things in?

• WLAN LED randomly blinking when there is no traffic

  Hi, I've got a Linksys WUSB54GC WLAN USB interface (Ralink chipset) and I'm running Debian GNU/Linux 6.0. The LED very often randomly blinks although there is no traffic in the network. I checked this with Wireshark. Sometimes, but rarely, the LED stops blinking. The issue is present in Ubuntu and Fedora too. It was not present in Debian Lenny with Linux 2.6.28. I checked an old live cd with ubuntu 8.10 with kernel 2.6.27 and it was also OK. So I guess that's an issue with Linux kernel and its wireless driver or firmware. Has anybody observed a similar thing? Does anybody know how to help this annoying blinking? Thanks.

  Can ECC registered RAM 512 MB DDR-400 be used on thin clients - specifically Neoware CA10/CA22? Neoware thin clients (now HP Thin clients e100/e140) have 2 slots for a max of 1 Gb of DDR-400 RAM (184 Pin PC3200). I notice that the price of ECC reg RAM is considerably less than that of non-reg RAM ($10 for ECC reg 512 MB vs $24 for non-ECC reg 512 MB) so this approach is worth it for me to upgrade my memory on numerous thin clients (approx 40). The BIOS is Phoenix E686 and the chipset is VIA 800MHz - 1 Ghz.

• Ubuntu hangs after replugging the modem

  I am facing this issue on Ubuntu 12.04, which is for my Wimax modem with beceem chipset. If I replug the device Ubuntu goes in hang state. Its happens very often. If I plug the USB and restart it works most of the time. But it is very annoying to restart every time it hangs. The modem works smoothly in Windows 7. And it used to work OK in Ubuntu 11.10. • Create access point (uap0) on debian 7(arm) - not found?

  I'm working with a fanless PC that has an ARM chipset, 2 eth plugs and a wifi card (among other things). If I install debian 6 on it all three network interfaces are available at boot time. Today I tried to install debian 7 and had numerous errors indicating that the wireless card isn't supported. uap0: error fetching interface information: Device not found SIOCSIFADDR: No such device uap0: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device uap0: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device No such device ERR:UAPHOSTCMD is not supported by uap0 ERR:Command sending failed! I've tried comparing the kernel module list to the working system but there are too many other differences to make something obvious enough (to me) stand out. How would I get started debugging this problem?

• Broadcomm WIDCOMM A2DP Quality Adjustment

  So I got a sweet pair of bluetooth A2DP headphones for a sweet, sweet price (Motorola A805, if you were wondering). They sound great paired with an iPhone. However, when I pair with a computer using the latest and greatest WIDCOMM drivers, the quality is quite poor, almost un-listenable... clicking, popping, scratching. The remedy on one machine was using BlueSoleil, another bluetooth stack, as there is an adjustment for the Bitpool settings that allow you to jack the quality up. Sounds great. However, the bluetooth chipset in my other machine is not supported by BlueSoleil... so I'm stuck with the WIDCOMM stack. So the question is... Is there an undocumented way to turn up the quality for A2DP in the WIDCOMM drivers? first question on SU, usually lurking on SO.. =]

• Can't install Ubuntu, black screen after install

  I tried several times, but wasn't able to make it work. I tried all recent types of Ubuntu but it didn't work. Then I tried acpi=off at the beginning of the installation. In this way I could finish the installation. But after the restart Ubuntu didn't work. Only a black screen appeared. Before that I tried it on the VirtualBox and it work. • SATA drive not recognized when installing RHEL 5.1 on PowerEdge R410

  Here's my setup: Dell R410 with Perc S100 (software) raid controller on an Intel ICH10R chipset The first problem is that the Perc S100 is only supported on windows. I'm trying to install RHEL 5.1. It boots from the cdrom, but later the installer can't see the cdrom or hard drive. Both are connected to the on-board sata controller. The only options in the R410 bios for SATA are ATA or RAID. I don't need raid, I just want a single drive setup.
