  • window title bar and controls (minimize, maximize and close) don't work sometimes

    I am using Ubuntu 11.10. Sometimes the window controls don't work. If I click on any of the icons on top-right or top-left they just become colorless and fade away, as though that are not present. The window has not frozen, as I can click inside the window and continue to work with it. The moment I click inside the window the titlebar controls regain their color, but when I click them again, they fade and bcm colorless. As a result, I cannot close, minimize or maximize. This is not a continuous problem, but happens very frequently.

  • Should custom data elements be stored as XML or database entries?

    There are a ton of questions like this, but they are mostly very generalized, so I'd like to get some views on my specific usage. General: I'm building a new project on my own in Django. It's focus will be on small businesses. I'd like to make it somewhat customizble for my clients so they can add to their customer/invoice/employee/whatever items. My models would reflect boilerplate items that all ModelX might have. For example: first name last name email address ... Then my user's would be able to add fields for whatever data they might like. I'm still in design phase and am building this myself, so I've got some options. Working on... Right now the 'extra items' models have a FK to the generic model (Customer and CustomerDataPoints for example). All values in the extra data points are stored as char and will be coerced/parced into their actual format at view building. In this build the user could theoretically add whatever values they want, group them in sets and generally access them at will from the views relavent to that model. Pros: Low storage overhead, very extensible, searchable Cons: More sql joins My other option is to use some type of markup, or key-value pairing stored directly onto the boilerplate models. This coul essentially just be any low-overhead method weather XML or literal strings. The view and form generated from the stored data would be taking control of validation and reoganizing on updates. Then it would just dump the data back in as a char/blob/whatever. Something like: <datapoint type='char' value='something' required='true' /> <datapoint type='date' value='01/01/2001' required='false' /> ... Pros: No joins needed, Updates for validation and views are decoupled from data Cons: Much higher storage overhead, limited capacity to search on extra content So my question is: If you didn't live in the contraints impose by your company what method would you use? Why? What benefits or pitfalls do you see down the road for me as a small business trying to help other small businesses? Just to clarify, I am not asking about custom UI elements, those I can handle with forms and template snippets. I'm asking primarily about data storage and retreival of non standardized data relative to a boilerplate model.

    Say my company is going to build a complicated asp.net web form education system. One of the module is web based registration. To make it flexiable, we decide to use user control(ascx) with rule-engine (work flow) regulating all business logic behide them. Thus in future,for different clients, we can simply config basic existing rules or adding new rules.(Rules stored in db or XML per client). Now the question is how to deal with the user controls (ascx)? My opinion is for different client build diffrent user control from scratch. other voice is like reuse existing user controls.

  • Programatically loading user controls

    Today's little problem is that I am trying to load user controls from my codebehind like so: Dim myControl As UserControl = Page.LoadControl("~\Modules\Content.ascx")              Controls.Add(myControl)  On running the page myControl is no where to be seen. I wonder why that is? Well after a bit of thought the following come to mind... Am I using the correct code to insert the usercontrol? Is there an alternative available? Does the fact that the usercontrol has a page_load method make a difference? Does the fact that the usercontrol is being called from the page_init method make a difference? Do I need to register the control in my aspx page at design time? I'll be looking to answer these questions as the day goes on!

  • Asterisk not playing custom sounds on Ubuntu Server 11.04

    I've installed Asterisk on my Ubuntu Server, all works fine, excepts playing the custom sounds. Asterisk sounds work, but this file I've uploaded does not play (on other servers it works, it is a .WAV PCM 16bit 8000).   • Custom widgets/controls in application indicators

    I want to develop an app for ubuntu, that integrates inside the calendar indicator/menu. It should allow to enter info right from it, and have several controls like input boxes, drop downs, spinners and buttons. Is this possible to integrate/replace the standard date/time indicator? If not, is it possible to create it as a separate indicator that when clicked opens a popup with all the controls and stuff? I want it to look as part of the sys tray and not as a separate desktop app. I'm using Quickly for this. Thanks for your help!

    Hi everyone, I am working on an app which uses tags. Accessing those should be as simple as possible. Working with an AutoCompleteTextView seems appropriate to me. What I want: existing tags should be displayed in a selectable list with a CheckBox on each item's side existing tags should be displayed UPON FOCUS of AutoCompleteTextView (i.e. not after typing a letter) What I've done so far is storing tags in a dedicated sqlite3 table. Tags are queried resulting in a Cursor. The Cursor is passed to a SimpleCursorAdapter which looks like this: Cursor cursor = dbHelper.getAllTags(); startManagingCursor(cursor); String[] columns = new String[] { TagsDB._TAG}; int[] to = new int[] { R.id.tv_tags}; SimpleCursorAdapter cursAdapt = new SimpleCursorAdapter(this, R.layout.tags_row, cursor, columns, to); actv.setAdapter(cursAdapt); As you can see I created *tags_row.xml* which looks like this: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:paddingLeft="4dip" android:paddingRight="4dip" android:orientation="horizontal"> <TextView android:id="@+id/tv_tags" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_weight="1" android:textColor="#000" android:onClick="actv_item_click" /> <CheckBox android:id="@+id/cb_tags" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:onClick="actv_item_checked" /> </LinearLayout> It looks like this: So the results are displayed just as I'd want them to. But the TextView's onClick listener does not respond. And I don't have a clue on how to access the data once an item is (de-)selected. Behaviour of the list should be the following: tapping a CheckBox item should insert/append the corresponding tag into the AutoCompleteTextView (tags will be semicolon-seperated) tapping a TextView item should insert/apped the corresponding tag into the AutoCompleteTextView AND close the list.     I am building a Android app and I am a bit struggling with custom Views. I would like to have a reusable View that consist of a few standard layout elements. Let's say a relativelayout with some buttons in it. How should I proceed. Should I create a custom view class that extends RelativeLayout and programmaticly add those buttons? I would think that's a bit overkill? What's the way to do it properly in Android?

    Hi, What is the best way to extend a control? Lets choose for example SpinBox - we want to extend TextBox to SpinBox - just to add two buttons on the right side, which each one on click checks if Text property is a valid number and if it is increases or decreases the value by 1. Suposse that we have a lot of code using TextBox (Text, IsReadOnly properties and bindings etc.) so we want to replace TextBox by SpinBox without touching rest of the code. 1) we can inherit TextBox - so we have exactly the same interface, but how to add the buttons ?? 2) we can inherit from some layout control - eg. DockPanel - we can add buttons, but we lose TextBox interface. 3) after quick read about ControlTemplates I'm not sure, but I believe that we can add buttons and their logic using ControlTemplates 4) like about templates I'm not sure, but I hope we can inherit decorator class to create decorator with the buttons - we lose interface, but can add TextBox as a child I think that the best solutions is to combine 3) and 4) - create a decorator class and use it in a control template for TextBox. I would be grateful for your ideas and simple code how to implement 3 and 4, especially with code (c#), not xaml. Regards
