  • Is the Windows dev environment worth the cost?

    I recently made the move from Linux development to Windows development. And as much of a Linux enthusiast that I am, I have to say - C# is a beautiful language, Visual Studio is terrific, and now that I've bought myself a trackball my wrist has stopped hurting from using the mouse so much. But there's one thing I can't get past: the cost. Windows 7, Visual Studio, SQL Server, Expression Blend, ViEmu, Telerik, MSDN - we're talking thousands for each developer on the project! You're definitely getting something for your money - my question is, is it worth it? [Not every developer needs all the aforementioned tools - but have you ever heard of anyone writing C# code without Visual Studio? I've worked on pretty large software projects in Linux without having to pay for any development tool whatsoever.] Now obviously, if you're already a Windows shop, it doesn't pay to retrain all your developers. And if you're looking to develop a Windows desktop app, you just can't do that in Linux. But if you were starting a new web application project and could hire developers who are experts in whatever languages you want, would you still choose Windows as your development platform despite the high cost? And if yes, why?

    Hi! I find it extremely difficult to describe my problem, so here goes nothing: I have a bunch of assertions on the type of a function. These assertions rely on a type variable that is not used for any parameter of the function, but is only used for internal bindings. Whenever I use this function it does not compile because, of course, the compiler has no information from which to guess what type to bind my type variable.     Hi, we are starting a new smart client project, which is .net winform as client, connecting web service at application server in win 2003. currently, all developers are using win xp pro, to enalbe debugging at both client and server side, we try to get both client and web service installed on XP pc, but the web server require service account to be used for authentication to Active Directory which need IIS6, so it won't work on XP(xp only support IIS5). What is best way to work around this?

    I am trying to resolve %USERPROFILE% using WScript.Shell. When I create a vbs file and run directly from Windows, I get the correct path for the logged-in user C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator but it gets resolved to C:\Documents and Settings\Default User instead of logged-in user when I used it inside my classic ASP webapp running on the local machine on IIS. The code I used is as below var oShell = new ActiveXObject("Wscript.Shell"); var userPath = oShell.ExpandEnvironmentStrings("%USERPROFILE%"); Is there a permission/setting which I need to check to get correct value of USERPROFILE when retrieving value from the webapp?   • How to maintain base files for development environment central while allowing people to change their

    Hi, what I'd like to do is have files in a central location so that when I add people to my development team they can see the base version of these files but meanwhile have the ability for the rest of the team to work with their own local version. I know I can just put the files in source-control (we use Tortoiese-SVN) and have my team change the local versions but I'd rather not as the exclamation mark signaling the file has been changed and needs to be committed, quite frankly, irritates me greatly. I'll give two examples of what I mean: We use quite a few build.xml files which relate to a single properties files which contains many definitions. Some of them can be different between team-members (mainly temporary working directories) and I'd like a new team-member to have the ability to get the properties file with the base config but change it if they wish. Have the eclipse settings file in the SVN so that when a new team-member joins they can just retrieve the files from the server and have a base system running. If they wish they will be able to change some of these settings. Thanks, Ittai

If not, I can simply create a separate function designed to keep track of the bool value, but I try to keep things simple.

All the classname values that appear during the for-each should be stored. How would you implement that in XSLT?     I have a Ruby class called LibraryItem. I want to associate with every instance of this class an array of attributes. This array is long and looks something like ['title', 'authors', 'location', ...] Note that these attributes are not really supposed to be methods, just a list of attributes that a LibraryItem has. Next, I want to make a subclass of LibraryItem called LibraryBook that has an array of attributes that includes all the attributes of LibraryItem but will also include many more. Eventually I will want several subclasses of LibraryItem each with their own version of the array @attributes but each adding on to LibraryItem's @attributes (e.g., LibraryBook, LibraryDVD, LibraryMap, etc.). So, here is my attempt: class LibraryItem < Object class << self; attr_accessor :attributes; end @attributes = ['title', 'authors', 'location',] end class LibraryBook < LibraryItem @attributes.push('ISBN', 'pages'] end This does not work. My only problem is a warning I get at compilation time: The 'Level' attribute is invalid - The value '$(var.brand.FeatureLevel)' is invalid according to its datatype 'http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema:integer' - The string '$(var.brand.FeatureLevel)' is not a valid Integer value. Is there a way to fix this warning? Can I define integer variable? I couldn't find a way...

  • PHP question about global variables and form requests

    Hi, This is probably a stupid question but will ask anyway sine I have no idea. I have written basic php code which serve forms. Say I have a login page and I serve it using the login.php page and it will be called in the login.html page like this - <form action="login.php" method="post"> By this it is also implied that every POST needs its own php file, doesn't it? This kind of feels weird. Is there a way to have a single file, say code.php, and just have each of the forms as functions instead? EDIT: Specifically, say I have 5 forms that are used one after the other in my application. Say after login the user does A, B, C and D tasks each of which are sent to the server as a POST request. So instead of having A.php, B.php, C.php and D.php I would like to have a single code.php and have A(), B(), C() and D() as functions. Is there a way to do this? Also on the same note, how do I deal with say a global array (e.g. an array of currently logged in users) across multiple forms? I want to do this without writing to a DB. I know its probably better to write to a DB and query but is it even possible to do it with a global array? The reason I was thinking about having all the form functions in one file is to use a global array. Thanks, - Pav

    I have a client who is wanting to create a link which contains product codes so that his customers hit a page with just those products displayed in an attempt to increase conversion rates from affilliate sites. My question is whats the best way to send these multiple products in a single URL For example: http://www.mydomain.co.uk/bespoke-list.php?catNo=234-324-232-343 Obviously then the site would grab the codes from the string and display them...
