• Installing PHP extensions on Linux

  Please bear with me; I'm a developer, not a server admin. My company wants to explore using Magento. They've handed me a pre-configured Linux server with apache and PHP installed, but when I try to run the Magento setup, it tells me that there are PHP extensions that need to be loaded. I can edit the php.ini file, but have no idea where to get the extensions or how to install them, and there's no one here who knows, either. Can anyone give me a hand? I need the PDO_MySQL, mcrypt, and GD extensions. I've searched and found sites that talk about downloading from the terminal and compiling code, but it's all way over my head. Is there an easy way to do this?

• Which Java web framework do you recommend for intranet webapp (not content website)?

  I'm about to start development of small purpose build intranet web application for small software vendor. It will be administration console of the server managing licenses for off-the-shelf software installed by users. There will be a few users who need to be able to sign in, issue a batch of license codes, revoke some, renew outdated, resolve issues, etc. Bear in mind that my customer requires Java for this solution. I'm seasoned Java programmer and before I used different frameworks to implement webapps, mainly Apache Struts in the past and Spring MVC recently. I was wondering what else could you recommend for such specific intranet webapp. I looked at using Google Web Toolkit (possibly with SmartGWT) Ext JS for fancy widgets in UI and REST back-end in SpringMVC SpringMVC with JQueryUI Could you please think of any piece of recommendation with regard to the choice I'm going to made?

• What advantages switching to ruby might give me as a python programmer ?

  This is my first question on stackoverflow, so please bear with me. I'm trying to stay away from any form of trolling or flame baiting as i have a tremendous respect for both languages. I'm a python programmer (though not an expert) and i love it. My first language was C++. My line of work (web development) is pushing me towards other languages like php and javascript. Recently, I've been very excited by Ruby's increasing popularity. However I used to be under the impression that Python and Ruby were so close that there was little point in trying to learn and master both. But I get the sense that I was wrong, hence my question : I'd like to hear from python programmers who have either switched entirely to ruby or added ruby to their toolset. What specific benefits did you get from switching (entirely or partially) to Ruby from Python ? Ideally I'd like to hear from real world experiences.

• How to Play PC Games on Your TV

  No need to wait for Valve’s Steam Machines — connect your Windows gaming PC to your TV and use powerful PC graphics in the living room today. It’s easy — you don’t need any unusual hardware or special software. This is ideal if you’re already a PC gamer who wants to play your games on a larger screen. It’s also convenient if you want to play multiplayer PC games with controllers in your living rom. HDMI Cables and Controllers You’ll need an HDMI cable to connect your PC to your television. This requires a TV with HDMI-in, a PC with HDMI-out, and an HDMI cable. Modern TVs and PCs have had HDMI built in for years, so you should already be good to go. If you don’t have a spare HDMI cable lying around, you may have to buy one or repurpose one of your existing HDMI cables. Just don’t buy the expensive HDMI cables — even a cheap HDMI cable will work just as well as a more expensive one. Plug one end of the HDMI cable into the HDMI-out port on your PC and one end into the HDMI-In port on your TV. Switch your TV’s input to the appropriate HDMI port and you’ll see your PC’s desktop appear on your TV.  Your TV becomes just another external monitor. If you have your TV and PC far away from each other in different rooms, this won’t work. If you have a reasonably powerful laptop, you can just plug that into your TV — or you can unplug your desktop PC and hook it up next to your TV. Now you’ll just need an input device. You probably don’t want to sit directly in front of your TV with a wired keyboard and mouse! A wireless keyboard and wireless mouse can be convenient and may be ideal for some games. However, you’ll probably want a game controller like console players use. Better yet, get multiple game controllers so you can play local-multiplayer PC games with other people. The Xbox 360 controller is the ideal controller for PC gaming. Windows supports these controllers natively, and many PC games are designed specifically for these controllers. Note that Xbox One controllers aren’t yet supported on Windows because Microsoft hasn’t released drivers for them. Yes, you could use a third-party controller or go through the process of pairing a PlayStation controller with your PC using unofficial tools, but it’s better to get an Xbox 360 controller. Just plug one or more Xbox controllers into your PC’s USB ports and they’ll work without any setup required. While many PC games to support controllers, bear in mind that some games require a keyboard and mouse. A TV-Optimized Interface Use Steam’s Big Picture interface to more easily browse and launch games. This interface was designed for using on a television with controllers and even has an integrated web browser you can use with your controller. It will be used on the Valve’s Steam Machine consoles as the default TV interface. You can use a mouse with it too, of course. There’s also nothing stopping you from just using your Windows desktop with a mouse and keyboard — aside from how inconvenient it will be. To launch Big Picture Mode, open Steam and click the Big Picture button at the top-right corner of your screen. You can also press the glowing Xbox logo button in the middle of an Xbox 360 Controller to launch the Big Picture interface if Steam is open. Another Option: In-Home Streaming If you want to leave your PC in one room of your home and play PC games on a TV in a different room, you can consider using local streaming to stream games over your home network from your gaming PC to your television. Bear in mind that the game won’t be as smooth and responsive as it would if you were sitting in front of your PC. You’ll also need a modern router with fast wireless network speeds to keep up with the game streaming. Steam’s built-in In-Home Streaming feature is now available to everyone. You could plug a laptop with less-powerful graphics hardware into your TV and use it to stream games from your powerful desktop gaming rig. You could also use an older desktop PC you have lying around. To stream a game, log into Steam on your gaming PC and log into Steam with the same account on another computer on your home network. You’ll be able to view the library of installed games on your other PC and start streaming them. NVIDIA also has their own GameStream solution that allows you to stream games from a PC with powerful NVIDIA graphics hardware. However, you’ll need an NVIDIA Shield handheld gaming console to do this. At the moment, NVIDIA’s game streaming solution can only stream to the NVIDIA Shield. However, the NVIDIA Shield device can be connected to your TV so you can play that streaming game on your TV. Valve’s Steam Machines are supposed to bring PC gaming to the living room and they’ll do it using HDMI cables, a custom Steam controller, the Big Picture interface, and in-home streaming for compatibility with Windows games. You can do all of this yourself today — you’ll just need an Xbox 360 controller instead of the not-yet-released Steam controller. • How can I put Fedora GUI onto Ubuntu?

  Okay, I'm pretty new to Linux-based systems, so if I say something wrong or ask something dumb, please bear with me. I have a project for school that requires some extensive work inside of the latest version of Fedora including screenshots of rather specific things. The VM system at my school runs Fedora 20 like a snail high on paint fumes, and my laptop's VirtualBox doesn't recognize the ISO I got from the official Fedora site, so I feel like I'm out of alternatives aside from formatting over Ubuntu. I'd rather not do that, as I rather enjoy this distro. I am running Ubuntu 14.04 on my laptop. At my login screen, I have the much appreciated option of selecting between a couple of GUI's--specifically, Ubuntu, GNOME, and Cinnamon. I would like to get the Fedora GUI added to this list, but I don't know where to start or if it's even an option. Any and all help is appreciated.

• Is paying programmers to "test" for bugs normal? [on hold]

  I recently hired a programming team to do a port of my iPad app to the iPhone and Android platforms. I also wanted them to implement a bunch of tips on how to play the app, similar like you would find in Candy Crush or Cut the Rope. They want to charge 12 hours @ $35/hr for the "Testing all of the Tips", telling me that normally it would take them more than 25 hours but that they will 'bear the difference'. I have never heard of this, but maybe it's a new practice? I am used to devs doing their own quality control, and then having a testing/acceptance period... Am I missing something? • cPanel email doesn't seem to work - error 550?

  I am fairly new to the web hosting game, so bear with me :) Recently set up a VPS with cPanel and WHM. Everything is going well so far, I've created a user domain and transferred my website there, managed a couple of databases with phpmyadmin, everything was going great until I started messing around with email. I made an email account [email protected] through cPanel, although when I try and email this address I get the following error: Technical details of permanent failure: Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the recipient domain. We recommend contacting the other email provider for further information about the cause of this error. The error that the other server returned was: 550 550 Unknown user (state 13) Quite unsure of what to do next, in all honesty.

• How do I select Wireless radio portions in Ubuntu?

  Bear with me, to be honest I have no idea what Wireless radio portions are.... At my school, I was told my the user support that the wireless network in my dorm uses 801.11 A/B/G/N. For some reason, the wireless in my room doesn't work. However, other buildings use only A/B/G, they say. In any other building, my wireless works fine. • I cant see my windows drive in ubuntu

  I'm n00ber than any n00b you ever seen, so bear with me... I just downloaded wubi and installed ubuntu 12.10 along with Windows 7 on the same HDD. Linux works fine, but doesnt show files from drive C (on which it is installed). I really need C as it contains all my files. I did df -h in the terminal. It does show the drive. /dev/sda2 577G 220G 358G 38% /host Now I tried to mount the drive sudo mount /dev/sda2 and got the response mount: /dev/sda2 already mounted or /host busy mount: according to mtab, /dev/sda2 is already mounted on /host I dont know what that means. The drive doesnt show up in HOME FOLDER. What am i supposed to do now?

• What time to display in text messages in multiplayer game?

  Say I'm having a multiplayer RTS game. There's a main server for each individual game and several clients connected to it. All packets are sent to server first and then server retransmits them back to clients. Say Server is located in one time-zone and all of the clients are in different time-zones. ClientA send a text message in chat at 12:03, what times should be stamped for other clients? Should his message be uniformely timestamped by Server (12:02) or each client should timestamp the message whenever it is recieved (12:04, 16:04, 03:03, etc..). Bear in mind, that all the messages are to be in the same order on all clients, server takes care of that. So thats the question - use local time for each client or use global server time to timestamp chat messages?

  Hibernate is working fine. A bit slow when resuming from a hibernate but I can bear with it just so that I have all open applications on the desktop as I left it. Then again the "slowness" might be because of the 4GB RAM, although I'm assuming only what is used gets swapped and not the entire memory. Going back, my question is has anyone been able to make Ubuntu show a splash screen or some kind of indicator/progress bar to show while hibernating or while resuming? I remember with SuSE on my HP Compaq Presario notebook it had messages appear during and after. Better than nothing, I guess. Thanks in advance! :D

• Youtube showing horizontal lines when full screen in google chrome

  First, im new in ubuntu so please bear with me. My google chrome shows strange behavior when playing youtube videos in full screen mode. There will be some horizontal white lines, which is exactly like when you playing the game without the vsync. I've checked firefox and the videos working perfectly in there. I also tried to play videos from my HDD using VLC player and its working fine. It seems the problem is in the google chrome alone. My version of ubuntu is 13.04, my laptop is asus n46vz and i use the latest release of google chrome. I've tried to ask google, but it seems he has no answer. Thanks for your time :D

• mouse and mousepad not working properly

  Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Samsung Q35 The mouse pad has stopped working, only the buttons work. The external mouse is also behaving very oddly, the mouse pointer works, but the button is not working properly, it has to be pressed many times or held down to select anything, and when anything that I select behaves as though the mouse is being clicked all the screen, settings will keep changing, the page will scroll, sliders will move up and down, tabs will toggle etc, so everything is unusable with the mouse, cannot even use the browser as it keeps scrolling the page up and down. I have tested the mouse on another computer, and it works fine. Please bear in mind that I am also a complete Linux novice, I installed Ubuntu on an old laptop for my kids, that is the limit of my experience.

• totally stuck trying to SSHing remote server

  Hey guys, So i've been given access to ssh a server. I have the username/password, but server apparently requires a public key (now bear in mind that i am a noob in ssh). When I do: ssh -p 52 [email protected] terminal says Permission denied (publickey). So I went using ssh-keygen -t rsa and got myself the id_rsa and id_rsa.pub files in /root/.ssh. Chmoded /root/.ssh to 700 and /root/.ssh/* to 600. Tried sshing server.com again, same error. What am I missing? I've been given a Putty Pagant Key file (.ppk) by the SYSADMIN of server.com. Apparently, other users (all Windows) can connect using Putty Pagant.exe. Please help :)

• Is it normal to sometimes take a while to get even basic things working in software development?

  This is a little hard to explain because it's a really generic question, but bear with me... I find that when I am doing or recreating basic things from scratch (i.e. without the help of libraries), sometimes it feels as though I'm taking much more time to do the task than is actually needed. I am not new to programming or development & design concepts and have worked extensively with around 9 languages and various platforms and paradigms over 5/6 years. Although I don't yet have any academic qualification for programming and have learned almost exclusively from the Internet, I have been told that the quality of my code is excellent by those with qualifications. So, I don't think I'm a bad programmer because I really love doing it and working with software architecture, but maybe I'm slow? Or is it normal to take sometimes longer than it seems necessary to do basic tasks?

• PLEASE HELP! Cannot login to server after file permissions change!

  So, I did something really stupid. Please bear with me as I am new to ubuntu server. I ran chmod -R 700 / when I was logged in as root. Now when I try to login as my normal user I immediately get kicked out. Is there anyway to log back in to the server whether it is root or whoever so that I can change the permissions? or am I totally screwed? I dont think I have root access enabled in the /etc/ssh/sshd_config file. I do have physical access to the server. I really need some help here. Thanks in advance!

• When Google gives up recrawling 301 that led to 404?

  I've transferred a domain and made a mistake in the redirects (the URL structure is identical). Even though they went to the new domain, the error caused a 404 when crawled by Google bot. 10 days after I saw and corrected my redirect mistake, and now the site should (hopefully) redirect to proper pages. Q1: The URLs of the 404 pages in the Webmaster Tools all bear the mistake and will never be available at the new site. I marked them as fixed in the tools. Do I need to do something about that, like 301 rewrite them with a condition to fix the error? Q2: Does Google bot attempt to recrawl 301 pages that pointed to a 404?
