  • What are the DB smells?

    We all know 'code smells', but what are the fundamental 'database smells'? I'm a DB n00b, but I'll give an example of something that I find fishy. It seems to me like when I have to join 6-8 tables together to optimize our loading that we have a DB smell? Or would that be a pretty 'normal' database layout? (Sure, early optimization is the root of all evil, but this seems to me like early pessimisation, not to mention the cumbersomeness?)

  • Show a DB as a directory (Like Sharepoint Does)

    Hi, My team and I are programming a sort of Document Manager and the idea is to store them completely on DB. Is there a protocol or Extensions that allows us to show a "Virtual Directory" or files that are really non existent (only in DB). How does Sharepoint do this? I understand that Sharepoint uses WebDav but it implies that the files do exist physically somewhere. We intend to develop this application on .NET 4.0 and deploy it on IIS. Any suggestions? I have noticed that sets of tables (eg all for one domain) have no relationship to other groups of tables as they are completely unrelated. What implication does this have on database design? I can assume this is a time I need to think about having 1 DB.

    I am writing web application using ASP.NET MVC + NHibernate + Postres stack. I wonder if images uploaded should be stored in database as binary blobs or on filesystem (and reference only in db). One advantage of db storage I can think of is easy backup/recovery of all data without reverting to filesystem copy tools. On the other hand I suspect that filesystem access may be faster (but is it especially when dealing with many concurrent requests?) What are your suggestions?

    I have created a database model in Visio Professional (2003). I know that the Enterprise version has the ability to create a DB in Sql Server based on the data in Visio. I do not have the option to install Enterprise. Aside from going through the entire thing one table and relationship at a time and creating the whole database from scratch, by hand, can anyone recommend any tool/utility/method for converting the visio database model into a Sql Script that can be used to create a new DB in Sql Server?

The query has a where clause like this: lower(barcode0_.barcode_ean) like lower((?||'%')) limit ? Does hibnerate or seam create the where clause which my DB can't understand?   • ASP.Net application can no longer write to DB after having run out of disk space

    I'm a software developer troubleshooting a sticky problem on a client's production server, and I've got a bit of a problem. They have a virtual server running Windows Server 2008, SQL Server 2008 R1 and IIS7. It was provisioned with two partitions: one that has the OS (~15 Gig), and the other has IIS' web sites (another ~15 Gig). My application that's running this server has been running perfectly well, up until about an hour ago, when it started throwing System.IO.IOException: "There is not enough space on disk". As soon as my client notified me, I cleared up some space on C:\, emptied the recycle bin, and restarted SQL Server and IIS. The web server came back up and the application was running, but it no longer saves information to the database. No error message is coming up, the application can get information out of the DB, but it can no longer save data back to it. I rebooted the server, to no effect. I spoke with a sys admin at the hosting company, and he says SQL Server appears to have come up fine and the database is not in read-only mode. I confirmed that, as I can add records to tables from SQL Server Management Studio. I looked at the event log immediately after trying to save an edited record in the app, and no new events appear in there that I can tell. I'm assuming this is related to having run out of space, as it was all working fine prior to that, but I'm at a bit of a loss as to what exactly needs a kick in the pants to get going again. Can anyone help me out? What the heck is going on here?

  • Simple end-to-end load and bottleneck monitoring for DB-based web sites

    What tools do you use / would you recommend for monitoring a Linux-based, DB-based website's servers for bottlenecks and load? The obvious goal being to know when growth has gotten to the point where it's necessary to scale up (or out) one or more of the bits and pieces because the current system won't be managing the load if an observed trend continues. I'm looking for general recommendations based on standard Linux load metrics, disk I/O metrics, network I/O metrics, etc., but if specifics are helpful: It'll be Tomcat6 using APR (possibly with a Varnish or similar caching and balancing front-end), MySQL, and either Ubuntu 8.04 LTS or 10.04 LTS depending on timing. I know about top, vmstat, iostat, bwmon and the like that collect and parse info from the /proc file system (et. al.); and obviously MySQL provides a lot of queriable performance information. I could use those directly, probably automating periodic monitoring logs with scripts and such. But I have a suspicion that I'd be reinventing a wheel... For example, Hyperic HQ seems to be along the lines of what I'm looking for. Others? Meta: I tend to think of "recommendation" questions as needing to be CW because there's no one right answer, but I see a lot of these here that aren't CWs, so I haven't marked it as one. I'll happily do so if enough people think I should.

    I am attempting to connect to a remote Oracle DB via ODBC. I am totally inexperienced and fail to connect. What I have installed: Oracle 'ODBC Driver for RDB' A program I want to connect from (Altova Mapforce, an ETL) What I do: Under Administrative tools I open the Windows "ODBC Data Source Administrator I click 'Add..' and select the Oracle ODBC Driver The Window 'Oracle RDB Driver Setup' opens. I fill in: Data source name: free choice Description: I leave blank Transport: I choose TCP/IP Server: I input the IP address of the server Service: I leave 'generic' UserID: I enter the user name (that belongs to the password I have) Attach Statement: no idea what do do here?? Upon choosing 'OK', the 'Oracle RDB ODBC Driver Connect' opens and I am prompted the password. I enter the password and the connection fails. Questions Do I need further programs on my computer, e.g. the Oracle client of Instant client? I am never prompted the port of the server - isn't this relevant? I am never prompted SID - isn't this relevant? I connected from SQL developer easily - it prompted only server IP, port, username, password and SID.

  • Data from a table in 1 DB needed for filter in different DB...

    I have a Win Form, Data Entry, application that uses 4 seperate Data Bases. This is an occasionally connected app that uses Merge Replication (SQL 2005) to stay in Sync. This is working just fine. The next hurdle I am trying to tackle is adding Filters to my Publications. Right now we are replicating 70mbs, compressed, to each of our 150 subscribers when, truthfully, they only need a tiny fraction of that. Using Filters I am able to accomplish this(see code below) but I had to make a mapping table in order to do so. This mapping table consists of 3 columns. A PrimaryID(Guid), WorkerName(varchar), and ClientID(int). The problem is I need this table present in all FOUR Databases in order to use it for the filter since, to my knowledge, views or cross-db query's are not allowed in a Filter Statement. What are my options? Seems like I would set it up to be maintained in 1 Database and then use Triggers to keep it updated in the other 3 Databases. In order to be a part of the Filter I have to include that table in the Replication Set so how do I flag it appropriately. Is there a better way, altogether? SELECT <published_columns> FROM [dbo].[tblPlan] WHERE [ClientID] IN (select ClientID from [dbo].[tblWorkerOwnership] where WorkerID = SUSER_SNAME()) Which allows you to chain together Filters, this next one is below the first one so it only pulls from the first's Filtered Set.
