• How do I get drivers working for an Nvidia GT560i on 12.04?

  I been using a test Xubuntu 12.04 LTS on my 64 bit workstation, because Ubuntu has dropped support for the nvidia graphic adapters my 10.04 LTS and I haven't been able to get them working. Now update manager has upgraded the kernel from 3.2.0-30-generic to 3.2.0-31-generic, and failed to produce a working nvidia module that the X server can load. Fortunately, when launching the 3.2.0-30-generic kernel, I still have use of the X server. Does anybody know a work-around or fix for this? I'm really worried, this is the last working Ubuntu distribution OS on the computer and I don't want to give up on Ubuntu. Details of problem here.

  Right now, I have the NVIDIA proprietary drivers enabled without the Ubuntu-X repo, so the driver version is 295.40 (which is on the official Ubuntu repo) instead of the current 304.64 for my card, but I want to update to the current (using the Ubuntu-X repo). From what I heard, after 302.xx, NVIDIA started supporting RandR and removed TwinView. My question is, I have TwinView enabled for two monitors. If I update to the new version, what will happen to my TwinView settings? Will there be any extra work to do to migrate to the new driver?

• How to add nvidia drivers after previous failure with linux mint?

  Before today, I had perfectly good drivers from nvidia for my linux mint (15) box. I decided to update it because my performance in TF2 is less than stellar, and then things went south. I used synaptic to install nvidia-331 and then rebooted, but when I selected Mint in GRUB I waited...and waited...and waited. Nothing happened, but the display stayed on (a completely black video was being output). So I went into recovery mode from GRUB, went to root access, and apt-get remove --purge nvidia*'d my way out of that mess, and installed nvidia-common. Now my performance in graphic intensive stuff (read: games, blender) sucks, so I've been through the same thing a few times trying to re-install nvidia-current. I just want to get it back how it was.   I saw that you are (were?) running 4 monitors with Ubuntu 8.10 and two Nvidia cards (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/27113/how-to-use-3-monitors). I was curious if you were doing this with Xinerama, a hacked up TwinView config, or multiple X screens, or some other method? Does it work with compiz? I intend to run my Dell 30" in the middle with two 1280x1024 on the sides and continue to use one X screen, and run compiz, on Ubuntu 9.04. Currently, I am using 2 monitors with twinview and compiz, which runs fantastic. I just can't get the third monitor running (unless I enable it in its own X screen, and then enable Xinerama to enable windows to be dragged as if all one X screen, but this breaks compiz, and I don't care much for having separate X screen). I am very interested in knowing how you set up 4 monitors with 2 GPU's. Thanks!

  I am using Ubuntu Gnome 13.04 with nvidia-310 driver installed. My GPU is GeForce GTX650. Strange spots freqently appear on screen, with following traits: Spots are restricted in one or two rectangle areas at any instant. When typing, the pattern of spots change. Possibly increase, or all disappear when one key pressed. Mouse movement also influences. This problem last within one boot. The only way can I get rid of this problem is to reboot. It can be detected as soon as entering desktop if it appears. Simultaneously, the "power off" option is lost in the top-right menu of Gnome3. Never such problem when using windows 7 on the same computer, neither ubuntu with Nouveou driver. Seldomly, half of the screen become black. I googled a lot. Similar conditions are described, but no confirmed solution. Uninstall-r einstall strategy does not work. Any clue solving this will be appeciated.

• Disk boot failure in Windows 7 64-bit after installing the latest NVIDIA drivers

  I successfully installed the newest NVIDIA drivers (275.33) in Windows 7 64-bit and rebooted afterwards just in case. After the reboot, I got an error about missing MBR. I disconnected the slave disk so that Windows doesn't get confused and got this message: DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER It seems that Windows doesn't recognize the main disk anymore. I booted from Windows install disk but the main disk doesn't get listed as possible Windows locations to repair, and I can't get to it from the recovery prompt. The BIOS does recognize it, and I'm able to see it if I run diskpart - however "detail disk" in diskpart says that there are no volumes on the disk. I also tried bootrec /FixMbr without effect, and bootrec /FixBoot which gives the error message: Element not found. What else can I do? Why would diskpart say there are no volumes on the disk?

• Nvidia restricted driver = invisible menus when using VNC

  I'm installing 9.04 on an HTPC, so I will often VNC in to work on it from my laptop. After the initial install, I updated everything, and it all went fine. I was able to VNC using Ubuntu's built-in "Remote Desktop" with no problems. I then installed the 180.xx restricted nvidia drivers and rebooted. Everything worked fine on my TV, but when I VNC'd into it, all I could see was the background and title bar. When I'd pull down a menu, the menu was visible on the TV but not over the VNC link. I assume that means the GUI was now using some sort of overlay for the menus, which is fine, but what's the best way to make them visible over VNC? Clarification: I know I can turn off all visual effects and solve the problem, but I'm looking for a way to see the menus over VNC while keeping the GUI pretty...

  Hello, I'm having a major problem and I really need your help! I have a MacBook Air which has the NVidia 9400M. The problem is, when I connect it to an external projector Windows 7 (and Vista) only allow me to connect at 640x480. I need it to use the laptop to present at conferences, as such I need it to work on a number of different projectors - at the moment I need to use OSX and VMWare but it's painfully slow and really doesn't work. At the moment, I'm considering buying a new laptop :( Is there any way to override the screen resolutions provided? I've saw some information around EDID? Thanks Ben

• Graphics artifacts/distortion with Win7 and nVidia

  Problem I encounter is rather hard to describe, so I provide a screenshot: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1732760/video-distortion.png As you can see there are some horizontal stripes in random colors. These stripes appear sometimes in all windowed apps, games and on the desktop too. They tend to stay in place until I refresh window (or force it to to redraw by for example minimizing and maximizing again). They also tend to appear in the same place and shape multiple times, even if they disappear, it's very likely they will be again in the same place after a while. These artifacts do not blink or change if computer is idling. If I don't touch anything, do not use mouse, they will stay in place forever (unless some app redraws its window on its own). I first encountered this problem some weeks ago. Back then I thought it might be cooling problem, so I took out the graphics card, removed dust from the radiator and fan and put it into PC back. I also ran some stress test using Furmark (peak tempearature was ~65C) to see if the problem becomes more intense if the card gets hotter, but suprisingly no artifacts whatsoever appear during the stress test. Graphic card is Galaxy GeForce 7300 GT with DDR3 memory, was never overclocked. Drivers are the latest, from Nvidia site. OS is Windows 7 64-bit, updated. AMD64 3000+, 2GB RAM. I'm running a dual monitor setup with 2 19'' Samsung LCDs and problem is on both, so I assume it's not a monitor or cable issue.

• RCA monitor won't display highest resolution when NVidia drivers are installed

  My computer is a dual-monitor setup. It won't display my second monitor's highest res... In fact, it will only display one resolution. Anything higher or lower makes the monitor not show the screen. I've had this problem with this computer, and I upgraded almost all my components (cpu, RAM, mobo, and video card included) and I still have this problem with my new setup. This leads me to believe it's a problem with my monitor and the NVidia driver together. Any thoughts on what can be done? The manufacturer of the monitor doesn't make a driver for this monitor. I used to run Windows Vista and now my new setup runs Windows 7.

• Disable raid member check upon mount to mount damaged nvidia raid1 member

  Hi, A friend of mine destroyed his Nvidia RAID1 array somehow and in trying to fix it, he ended up with a non-working array. Because of the RAID metadata, the actual disk data was stored at an offset from the beginning. I was able to identify this offset with dd and a hexeditor and then I used losetup to create a loop device with the proper offset, so that I could mount the partition. It was then that I ran into problems, namely that mount says: "mount: unknown filesystem type 'nvidia_raid_member'". I also had this when trying to mount a Linux MD component the other day, and because I can remember that doing that in the past worked, I surmised that it may be some kind of protection. I therefore booted an old Sysrescue CD and tried it there, which worked (because of the older version of mount/libc/kernel/whatever). I still need to try to get more data, and because I don't want to keep using that SysrecueCD, I'd like to be able to mount the disk on my normal system. So, my question is: can the check for a disk being a raid member be disabled? I guess I could also zero out blocks that look like the raid block, but I'd rather not... I made an image of the disk with par2 data, so it's revertable, but still...

  Hi! It nice to have read that you solved this problem this way. I have 2 laptops Compaq CQ60 AMD Athlon with Nvidia graphic cards. the first one is new, when i press power button, it lights up only the ON led in front and nothing else, no fan working, blank screen, no beep.. I don't know what may be the problem. When I put on power adaptor, it lights up only the side power led near dhe power adapter plug but it doesn't light up the front led one. the second one have this problem that it spins the fan, light power and On led, but it doesn't show nothing on the screen blank (even with external monitor). In this case it maybe this problem of the Nvida Graphic Chip and it may need a reflow. I have an hot air station, but I don't know if I should try this or the oven one. Please can you give me any suggestion what to do to solve this. I have read that the solution of the Oven method is just temporary,maximum of three months, do you have the same experience about this? Any suggestion is wellcome.

• Installing nvidia drivers causes computer to boot to command prompt.

  Hi, I have an Asus u30jc laptop, which comes with the Optimus prime graphics card switching technology that is now supported under 2.6.35, so I decided to give it a try. First I made sure the discrete graphics card was activated and then I installed the drivers proposed by the ubuntu software repository (nvidia-current). However, after rebooting all I got was a command prompt. My graphics card is a nvidia 310M. This is on Ubuntu 10.10 64 bits. What can I do to diagnose/identify the source of this problem? UPDATE: The messsages in my syslog tell me to check the xorg log: Oct 11 12:42:59 u30jc-test gdm-binary[1095]: WARNING: GdmDisplay: display lasted 0.053144 seconds Oct 11 12:42:59 u30jc-test gdm-simple-slave[1450]: WARNING: Unable to load file '/etc/gdm/custom.conf': No such file or directory Oct 11 12:42:59 u30jc-test gdm-binary[1095]: WARNING: GdmDisplay: display lasted 0.038176 seconds Oct 11 12:42:59 u30jc-test gdm-binary[1095]: WARNING: GdmLocalDisplayFactory: maximum number of X display failures reached: check X server log for errors Which I did. I found this message in my /var/log/Xorg.0.log : Fatal server error: [ 113.540] no screens found [ 113.540] What does that mean?

• Black Screen after installing recommended Nvidia drivers. What to do?

  New to Ubuntu. Problem description: Until recently I had Windows on my computer. My hard disk is divided into two partitions. On the first one (app. 10 GB) I had my Windows XP On the second one (app. 30 GB) I have some data I tried to install Ubuntu 12.04 on the first partition (the smaller one). Since I wanted to keep the data on my second partition, I chose the third install option. During the installation process I deleted the data on partition one, created a new partition with the same size, formatted it as ext4 and mounted / on it. The installation continued fine and at the end I restarted and took the CD out when it ejected automatically (it could have been also before the restart). Ubuntu started but I noticed that my computer was slow. Then a prompt appeared telling me that I did not have the optimal NVidia drivers and recommended to install a specific one. I clicked on the recommended driver, installation went apparently just fine and at the end I had to restart the system again. I did it, Ubuntu started, asked for my password, I typed it, pressed Enter, the screen turned black and remained like that (only the cursor was there and I could move it). I restarted and the same thing happened again. Has anyone had such a problem before and was able to solve it? With Windows I always installed drivers from CDs after installing Windows. Are the same CDs going to work for Ubuntu too or I should find special drivers? P.S. During the installation I was connected to the internet and I agreed on installing updates and the third party software. In the time before I installed that problematic but recommended NVidia driver I checked that there was between 6 and 7 GB free space on the first partition where I installed Ubuntu.

  I've bought this laptop "Dell Vostro 3700", having inside an Intel integrated graphic card and an Nvidia GeForce GT330M. Depending on energy saving mode it switches between the two video cards. When I try to update the video driver (now version 189.99 on Windows 7 64-bit) with that found on Nvidia site an error message say that it cannot find compatible graphic hardware. Dell doesn't provide a newer driver version. Has anyone solved the same problem?

  I got a slimline s7600n and of course i put ubuntu 12.04 on it. Im using recommended proprietary drivers and they are just not working to well. My monitor is 1366x768 but it will only do 1360x768 and minecraft barely runs at all. Besides that everything is fine. But i gota play minecraft! help! lol Thanks. :) Other specs is cpu amd athlon 64 dual core 2ghz ram 1 gig vid is 256mb 64bit Not sure what other info yall need.

• Is NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 Video Card Compatbile with a Mac Pro Running Windows 7 Pro 64?

  I have a Mac Pro (early 2008) and I'm running Windows 7 Pro (64 bit) natively (i.e., with just Windows installed and no OSX or boot camp) on it. If I buy an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 video card, will it work or do I have to buy a card that is Mac-specific (e.g., GeForce GTX 285 'for Mac')? Also, more generally, will Windows video cards work on Intel Macs running Windows (in case I pick a cheaper card)? I can't tell if it matters that a Mac does not have a bios. I searched other boards and I gathered that video cards would work fine because Windows has the proper drivers for them and OSX doesn't and not having the BIOS doesn't make a difference. I found one thread on here that seemed to indicate that as well, but I wanted to make sure. Thanks.

• Firefox 12's hardware acceleration on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

  After I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (32 bits), Firefox 12 works fine but without hardware acceleration. Needless to say I have the latest nVidia's proprietary drivers installed and my Firefox Preferences, on "Advanced" tab, "Browsing" section, have the option "Use hardware acceleration when available" checked. I have tried the following things before asking this question: Creating a boolean key "webgl.force-enabled" and set it to true on Firefox's page about:config; Starting a new profile like commented on thread Mozilla Firefox 12 is very slow on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS; I have updated my nVidia driver to version 295.53. And none of this have worked. As you can see below in my Firefox's page about:support report, "Graphics" section shows no "GPU Accelerated Windows": Adapter Description NVIDIA Corporation -- GeForce GTX 460/PCIe/SSE2 Vendor ID NVIDIA Corporation Device ID GeForce GTX 460/PCIe/SSE2 Driver Version 4.2.0 NVIDIA 295.53 WebGL Renderer NVIDIA Corporation -- GeForce GTX 460/PCIe/SSE2 -- 4.2.0 NVIDIA 295.53 GPU Accelerated Windows 0 AzureBackend skia I use the following site to test hardware acceleration: http://ie.microsoft.com/testdrive/Performance/FishBowl/ On Windows 7 I get 60 fps even with 1,750 fishes on browser's Full Screen Mode (1680x1050x32bit-color).   I have a mid-2008 workstation with two HD monitors supporting HDMI and DVI inputs. Since Ubuntu 11.10, I have experienced no end of trouble with my NVidia Quadro NVS 290 in TwinView dual-monitor output. Others have similar desktop TwinView woes. I want a new graphics card. Previously I asked for a graphics card recommendation and response was Nvidia Geforce GTS 450... but really I'm looking for someone who has actually got a working dual-monitor desktop to tell me what card they use so I can get something that is known to work. So please, people who have no-issues with their 64-bit Ubuntu 12.04 Unity 3D desktop spread across two HD-resolution external monitors (either DVI or HDMI connector), and who also run Google Chrome (which throws a spanner due to its own GPU compositing)... please let me know what graphics card you have so I can buy one. Gathering Options These seem to be the Nvidia cards featuring dual DVI. But they all seem to be gaming cards - what has dual-DVI, good support, but is not a massive gaming card? Nvidia GTS 450 (previously recommended) - 2x DVI Nvidia GTX 550 Ti (used by System76) - 2x DVI Nvidia GT 430 (used by System76) - 1xDVI, 1xHDMI Nvidia GT 640 (found on NVidia site) - 1xDVI, 1xHDMI (also GT 620, GT 630) Has anyone had a good desktop dual-monitor Unity 3D experience with ATI cards?

• CUDA & MSI GT60 with Optimus enabled GTX670M?

  I have a MSI GT60 Laptop with an Optimus enabled GTX 670M GPU, and I have been trying to get CUDA going in Ubuntu 12.04 environment. I realize that Optimus is not supported in Linux, but I have read the following post suggesting that CUDA works for hybrid GPUs. How can I get nVidia CUDA or OpenCL working on a laptop with nVidia discrete card/Intel Integrated Graphics? I installed the NVIDIA driver via sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install nvidia-current The resulting driver version is 302.17, and supposedly GTX 670M is supported since 295.59. I also downloaded CUDA 4.2 from the NVIDIA site, and compiled it against nvidia-current libraries. Unfortunately, when I run deviceQuery in the CUDA SDK, I get the following output cudaGetDeviceCount returned 38 -> no CUDA-capable device is detected Checking /proc/driver/nvidia/gpus/0/information gives the following Model: GeForce GTX 670M IRQ: 16 GPU UUID: GPU-????????-????-????-????-???????????? Video BIOS: ??.??.??.??.?? • Ubuntu 13.04 boot into black screen, even after installing nvidia drivers, fail at: "Starting Reload cups, upon starting avahi-daemon..."

  I got a new machine with i7 4770k and gefore gtx660. I installed windows and then installed Ubuntu 13.04. In the installation everything went well, after the installation I again boot from the USB and choose try ubuntu, and installed boot-repair because windows automatically boot with no option for ubuntu. After I repaired the boot, I restarted and got into grub, when I chose Ubuntu I got message saying I'm running on low graphics mode and when I pressed ok the screen turned off. I couldn't do anything so I restarted and after reading this post: My computer boots to a black screen, what options do I have to fix it? I got into recovery, selected dpkg and repaired packages. Then I rebooted, and tried to press 'e' and change quiet splash to no splash and nomodeset but unfortunately both of them didn't work, and not the screen didn't get turned off, but I just saw a blank screen. So I rebooted again, entered the recovery, and this time I went to the root shell, and tried to install nvidia drivers from this guide here: http://www.howopensource.com/2012/10/install-nvidia-geforce-driver-in-ubuntu-12-10-12-04-using-ppa/ I rebooted and got the same black screen again (the screen didn't go off, just saw a blank screen). In the grub I see that the kernel is 3.8.0-25. I also checked that the usb files are not corrupted using the check CD from the ubuntu installation screen. I'm really frustrated, I don't know what else can I do. (If someone also knows how can I connect to wifi using the root shell it will be very appreciated, because when I choose the 'enable networking' it again booting me to a black screen. I opened (by right mouse lick) and changed to 1024x768 = lines and nothing else(but ubuntu works! So how repair it back to normal? Thank's for all how will tell me how to! (Sorry about my English).
