  • Project Management - Asana / activeCollab / basecamp / alternative / none

    I don't know whether this should be on programmers - I've been looking at the above three apps over the past few weeks just for myself and I'm in two minds. All three look good, are easy to use, and I came to this conclusion; Asana is the easiest to use ActiveCollab is the feature rich and easiest flow BaseCamp is the best UX / design But I didn't really find my workflow was any more quicker / efficient, in fact it was a bit slower and organized. Is there a realistic place for them in workflow - should programmers use them for themselves, or only when a project manager can take control of it?

  • Why do large IT projects tend to fail or have big cost/schedule overruns?

    I always read about large scale transformation or integration project that are total or almost total disaster. Even if they somehow manage to succeed the cost and schedule blow out is enormous. What is the real reason behind large projects being more prone to failure. Can agile be used in these sort of projects or traditional approach is still the best. One example from Australia is the Queensland Payroll project where they changed test success criteria to deliver the project.   • Motivating developers in a project perceived as **dull** ?

    As a manager, I can't always end up generating work that'd be cutting edge. Some of the projects do run on maintenance mode, and generate a healthy free cash flow for the company. As a developer what would it take for you to stick around in this project? I have been thinking of re-branding the work, but I could do with a lot of help here. Appreciate a single response per post. Please don't suggest an increased pay-packet, this creates more problems than it solves.

I'm about to signup for a hosting plan with GoDaddy. My main requirement is ColdFusion and MySQL. The plans on offer include Linux and Windows based plans. Which one should I choose, and why? I don't have a lot of requirements other than what I mentioned above. I never used Linux before but I doubt I'll ever need to do anything beyond tampering with my account. What are the main advantages of one over the other?

    I am working on a C++ project that is getting bigger and bigger. I do a lot of UML so it is not really hard to explain my work to co-workers. Lately though I implemented a lot of new features and I gave up updating by hand my Dia UML diagrams. I once used the class diagram of Visual Studio, which is my IDE but didn't get clear results. I need to show my work on a regular basis and I would like to be as clear as possible. Is there any tool that could generate a sort of organized map of my work (namespaces, classes, interactions, etc.) ?

  • Web hosting announced downtime and how it affects FORWARD domain names?

    Our web hosting provider that holds our FORWARD domain names announced that at some point in the next couple weeks they will be migrating servers and that this will cause a 5-10 minute downtime at some point in that week during what happens to be our core business hours. They cite for technical reasons it is impossible to give an exact date or time when this downtime will occur. My questions are: If my domains are set to FORWARD to a static IP on servers not hosted by the web hosting provider in question then will this affect the DNS servers correctly routing to my website? Are their legitimate technical reasons for such a wide window of time, or could this just be a blanket statement to cover laziness in not being more organized with their server migrations? Are such downtimes normal for web hosting providers, or should I start to consider other providers?

  • SSL and IP addresses on a dedicated server

    I've just moved from a shared web hosting server operating on WHM/cPanel running six domains with 1 dedicated IP address. 1 of the 6 domains has an SSL certificate. I have since moved to a dedicated server also with 1 dedicated IP and running cPanel/WHM with the same six domains. I want 1 of the domains to have the SSL certificate but I am being told that it's not possible unless I buy another dedicated IP address. I want to question the hosting provider on this but they haven't really acknowledged it - they've just kept saying that it needs its own IP as the IP I am currently using is shared between my six domains. Does anyone have any experience of this and tell me why my new expensive dedicated hosting provider can't setup SSL using the certificate as I had done before on my shared server?

The site is not slow but for how can I know if, for example, hosting it in Europe or Asia is better ? To clarify I need to know there is a way that I can test different hosting options - for example how can I test the average response time between Egypt and a host in Texas, the average response time between Egypt and a host in the UK ?
