• How to install Windows 7 From Network?

  Hello SuperUser My question is that is it possible to install Windows 7 (Current RTM Version) on a computer without using removable media like DVD or USB. First thing that comes to my mind is network but i dont have experience of doing Fresh Install of Windows 7 via Network. How to install Windows 7 via network without any removable media? P.S. I know some may think that doing so, is just a waste of time and it's easier to do it with removable media, but in current situation the target PC neather has CD/DVD Drive nor supports booting from USB. And in addition to that, Target computer is connected to Network via Wireless Network (Dunno if it will make any problem with installation).

• Why do browsers have so many possible exploits?

  When browsing I am ocassionally given warnings about pages that host malware "that could damage my computer". I am seriously perplexed as to why, in 2010, browsers still have possible exploits and can be cracked. My question is "Why?". I'm assuming it's because of the quick development that occured in the browser wars which were unsufficiently tested, but I'm unsure. Surely WebKit would have patched all the issues in KHTML, or Gecko sorted out the flaws in Netscape's engine, and the IE coders sorted through their codebase to eliminate possible flaws? • Getting visual feedback of workspace switch in xfce

  Not sure if this is an appropriate question for this site, since it's not really specific to Ubuntu. Those who feel it isn't should probably respond to my crosspost on the Unix and Linux stackexchange site. Sorry for any confusion, I'm still negotiating the borderlines between these sites (and superuser.com, where I also crossposted). I guess we all are. I make heavy use of workspaces, and have a lot of them (a 6x4 grid). I usually run openbox, but am currently using a machine that doesn't have openbox set up, so I'm using xfce because it's already mostly configured to my liking. I've gotten used to getting visual feedback when I switch workspaces, showing me which one I've just moved to, and am finding myself a bit disoriented in xfce. In openbox this is a big heads-up display, which is pretty much ideal. I'm aware that the workspace switcher panel applet will highlight the active workspace, but this only seems to work for workspaces which have some desktop space showing; since I generally have all my windows maximized, this isn't super helpful. Is there a way to enable visual feedback showing the new workspace when switching workspaces in xfce?

• Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP4 wasn't installed

  I lost track of my account when my question was moved to superuser. I wasn't able to install Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP4 through automatic update so I downloaded the update from here and tried manual install, which was also failed with some error: The components that you are trying to install are already installed I checked the product version of sql server 2005 which returned 9.00.5000.00 through command Select @@version. Now the question is, if the automatic update wasn't able to apply the SP4 patch then how come the version is updated to 9.00.5000.00 ? There is no way to rollback or reinstall the patch as it takes the entire SQL Server which came with Visual Studio 2005 to be re-installed. Is there any other way I can verify that SP4 patch was properly applied? Edit: I used MBSA Tool to analyze the required updates which confirms that the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP4 is missing.

  Hi, I am redirecting my question to superuser from stackoverflow: I have a http streaming link which gives me .flv streaming feed. I want to convert that and access in my iPhone program. How can i do that? I want to have a desktop software like VLC and input this streaming feed URL and convert to iPhone supported and stream again to iPhone. I tried VLC with H.264 and Mpeg-1 audio, but seems to be it doesn't give the supported format, so as iPhone program doesn't play the video. Could someone please guide me how can i setup a desktop software which can stream iPhone supported file? Thanks in advance.

I know there is http://stackexchange.com/ as well, but I really want some tight integration with the rest of my site. Failing that, has anyone got any experience with the open source versions? • Why does my $LD_LIBRARY_PATH get unset when using screen with bash?

  This is related to http://superuser.com/questions/27376/why-does-my-ld-library-path-get-unset-launching-terminal, but a different set of symptoms. First, /usr/bin/screen is setuid as per the other question. Second, the default shell on this system is /bin/tcsh for various historical reasons, and we're not allowed to chsh to /bin/bash, so I typically run bash manually immediately after login. Third, I almost always use screen, but I want ctrl-a ctrl-c in screen to create a new bash "tab", so I always invoke bash first. That is: {~} $ echo $SHELL /bin/tcsh {~} $ bash [~] echo $SHELL /bin/bash [~] screen -U [~] ...and when reconnecting: {~} $ echo $SHELL /bin/tcsh {~} $ screen -dUr [~] echo $SHELL /bin/bash [~] However, my $LD_LIBRARY_PATH is there in tcsh, there in bash, but empty once I run screen; it is still present if I just run screen from tcsh, but then I get new tcsh "tabs" when I use ctrl-a ctrl-c in screen. Any ideas?

• load langs.xml failed also after fix.

  I have the same error as stated on: http://superuser.com/questions/67128/notepad-load-langs-xml-failed. I have also applied the fix listed there. I delete the langs.xml file. Then when I reboot notepad++.exe a new langs.xml is created from the langs.model.xml file. However, after I reboot my computer the langs.xml file is corrupted again. It is completely empty. Does anyone know what is causing the deletion of the langs.xml file? I noticed the problem shortly after using windows 7 64 bit, and on two seperate computers.

I don't mind browsing the Registry, using Process Explorer, reading the Event logs, (un)installing new drivers and so on, but all this only makes me solve some problems. I tend though to run into problems where these tools aren't enough. Which tools should I learn about to improve my troubleshooting skills in Windows? Currently I'm using Windows Vista x64 (not moved to 7 yet), facing audio/video stuttering problems and I think this is a good place to improve my troubleshooting skills. I know this post is similar to this question, but my machine is only hanging occationally. Because I got this error while I tried following this instruction: Give the IP address, username and password of the remote machine that you would like to convert and then hit next I got this error in vmware converter: Unable to connect the specified host 10.0.2.15 which is the ip address of the xp machine inside virtual box. It also said that there is a network configuration problem. And when I inputted the ip address from whatismyip.com which should be the same as the ip address on local machine. I didn't get the previous error but I got another one, it said that: insufficient permissions to connect to "ip address" What solution can you suggest for this problem?

• Why doens't my Postgres user have permissions to add a Postgres database?

  First, I ran: sudo su postgres createuser -U postgres foouser -P which worked fine, and I ran: createdb -U foouser -E utf8 -O foouser foodatabase -T template0 and got "permission denied: cannot create database" Firstly, should I even su as postgres to do operations like the first one (assuming my postgres data dir is owned by postgres), or is -U postgres from any user (assuming trust is used in pg_hba.conf) sufficient? Secondly, why am I running into this error? Is this because the user foouser is a non-superuser? Should I create foodatabase using the postgres user and simply -O foouser?

• How can I hard reset a USB device?

  I have a USB device (a modem) that is really finicky. Sometimes it works fine, but other times it refuses to connect. The only solution I have found to fix it once it gets into a bad state is to physically unplug the device and plug it back in. However, I don't always have physical access to the machine it is plugged in on, so I'm looking for a way to do this through the command line. This post suggests running: sudo modprobe -w -r usb_storage; sudo modprobe usb_storage However I get an "unknown option -w" output. This slightly modified command: sudo modprobe -r usb_storage Fails with the message FATAL: Module usb_storage is in use. If I try to kill -9 the processes marked [usb-storage] before running they refuse to die (I think because they are deeply tied to the kernel). Anyone know of a way to do this? NOTE: I cross-posted this on superuser.com as I didn't know which was more appropriate. I will delete and/or link whichever one is answered first.

• development and music recording machine suggestions?

  I wasn't sure if this belongs on SuperUser so flag if so. I am looking to build, primarily, a windows development machine that is also good for recording using Cubase. I know I should use seperate machines but I'm on a budget this time of year. I also havn't kept up with hardware for quite a few years. Basically I know I want quad core, multiple monitor support (no gaming requirements). A lot of RAM, very quiet case and super fast HDD (SSD OR 10,000RPM)for compiling and latency. I will store libraries and other data on a USB drive. Sound card is not needed as I will be using an audio interface, all other music recording equipment is taken care of also. I could do with some decent monitor recomendations also. All suggestions welcome, thanks.

• File saving disabled 'Saving has been disabled by system admin'

  I have coded my own html website recently, and today wished to add a Google calender object to it. I have not put this website on the web because it is for my own personal use and I can't buy a domain. So I just have a folder on my pc that I load the index.html from now and then. As I was saying, today I got an error while trying to save the Google calender object in. I am system admin on my PC, in fact no one else uses but me, except when I have friends round, but for once my PC seems to think I'm some standard account user, because I couldn't save. I thought of clicking close and seeing if it came up with save as, but it didn't, it said 'Are you sure you want to close without saving?' or something along the lines of that, and 'Saving has been disabled by your system admin.' I couldn't do anything. I tried looking at the settings of the file, and it had me as read only in one of the selections, so I changed that to read & write, but to no avail. I did not save as root when I last edited the file, so I don't get what's going on. Help! P.S. This is on Ask Ubuntu not Superuser because it is on my Ubuntu PC and it appears to be a problem with Ubuntu not root or hardware.

• Explorer forgetting how to cut and paste files

  My Windows XP (SP3) machine (at work) occasionally "forgets" how to cut-and-paste files in Explorer - if I cut or copy a file then go to paste it elsewhere, the "paste" and "paste shortcut" menu items are greyed out. The keyboard shortcuts (Ctrl+X/Ctrl+C,Ctrl+V) don't work either, and neither does Drag-and-Drop - clicking and dragging a file/folder doesn't change the pointer and letting go doesn't drop the item anywhere. Restarting the explorer.exe process usually fixes the problem, but sometimes I need to do a full reboot. Note: this may be related to the following existing question, although that's Vista and it sounds like the asker has more permanent problems than I do: http://superuser.com/questions/27045/copy-paste-in-vista-explorer-broken-not-ms-vpc So, any idea what might be causing the problem and how to avoid it?

• WinXP keyboard input repeat rate problem

  I have problem similar to http://superuser.com/questions/33981/problems-with-kvm-switch-and-keyboard-repeat-rate-on-windows-xp: When I press and hold some key it's repeated random number of times, after that repeat stops and I need to release key and press it again to make repeat continue. If there's simultaneous sound playback and repeat is stopped, sound's stuck while I hold key with unpleasant drumming as if there's some audio problem. This issue is reproducible in WinXP Safe Mode. On the same config under Linux there's no issue. • Set up ad hoc wireless connection between Windows Vista and Mac OS X

  I have the following problem - Windows Vista does not connect to adhoc wireless network created on my Macbook. I have tried to create secured (with 40 bit key) and unsecured network but Windows Vista still has problems to connect. Windows VISTA informs me -- after 5 minutes of attempts - that setting up the connection -- with my adhoc network -- took too much time. My question: do I need to configure some settings on Vista to connect it to my Macbook? Maybe it is a problem with DHCP? • RAID Read/Write Speed Gradually Slows

  This is actually a server at home, but I felt it was sufficiently complicated as to not have it on SuperUser and could easily apply to a professional situation. I have a file server running Debian (Lenny 5.0.4), and it has an XFS LVM on top of a RAID 5 with the OS drive separate from the RAID. It's also running apache, samba, and postgresql. Side note: before anyone asks, I'm using RAID5 because I get more bang for the buck on raw drive space, and still have some fault tolerance. When the box is started (via shutdown or reboot) reading/writing to it's samba share maxes out the gigabit network connection. Over time, this slowly degrades eventually becoming < 10MB/s; however, when rebooted the speed returns to maxing out the connection. Why is this happening, and is there a way to 'clear' out whatever's causing it without taking the server down? Thanks in advance!

• Dock with dual external DVI monitors with Intel + Nvidia Optimus?

  I have a Dell Latitude E6420 laptop plugged into a docking station, and the dock has 2 monitors (connected with DVI). Also note that I've installed Ubuntu alongside (dual-boot) Windows 7. I can't get the dual monitors to work both on Ubuntu (either 11.10 or 12.04) and Windows 7. When I run lspci | grep VGA, I get: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GF108 [Quadro NVS 4200M] (rev a1) If I then reboot and uncheck Optimus setting in the BIOS during reboot, I'm able to get the dual monitors to work in Ubuntu 12.04 (but I need to configure them every boot in Nvidia Settings). When I run lspci | grep VGA, I get: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF119 [Quadro NVS 4200M] (rev a1) But then if I reboot into Windows (leaving the Optimus unchecked), Windows can't detect external monitors, and the resolution is unacceptably low. I've seen on many forum posts that this particular graphics card setup causes lots of headaches. I haven't been able to resolve my problem yet. How can I use my external display on my laptop with intel and nvidia video cards? How to use external displays with Intel driver on a NVidia/Intel hybrid system nVidia Optimus , Unity 3D and Dual Monitors "Just use VGA instead of DVI" isn't an option because my dock has only 1 VGA port (and 2 DVI). Switching the BIOS setting on every reboot and then reconfiguring the display settings every time is tedious, time-consuming, and impractical. Do you know how to make this work smoothly? • Deleting large no of files on linux eats up CPU

  I generate more than 50GB of cache files on my RHEL server (and typical file size is 200kb so no of files is huge). When I try to delete these files it takes 8-10 hours. However, the bigger issue is that the system load goes to critical for these 8-10 hours. Is there anyway where I can keep the system load under control during the deletion. I tried using nice -n19 rm -rf * but that doesn't help in system load. P.S. I asked the same question on superuser.com but didn't get a good enough answer so trying here.

• cygwin GNU make .net program piping inconsistent behavior

  This question may sound like a superuser question but I feel there is something related to programming. Anyway, my computer had a fresh installation of Win 7 64 and cygwin recently. Now I observed some problem with pipe handling in gnu make file. The following is the Makefile I use to reproduce the issue: all: fsutil | cat my-dotnet-console.exe | cat The problem is: for the first command line, the piping works every time but for the second command line, the piping barely works - I got no result for the second command for most cases, regardless of the environment (cmd or bash) in which the make file is invoked. However, if I copy paste the second command line into cmd (or bash), the pipe works every time. The following is my .net program: static void Main(string[] args) { Console.WriteLine(new string('a', 40)); Console.Out.Flush(); } The make version is 3.82.90 but the same problem was observed in a previous version (because of the windows path handling problem in 3.82.9, I replaced make.exe with a previous version). I don't know the exact cygwin version I have installed but the current version on cygwin.com is 1.7.11-1. Currently, my work around is to redirect the output to a temporary file but it would be great if I can avoid the temporary file. Thanks
