• May the file size returned by stat be compromised?

  I want to make sure that nobody changed a file. In order to accomplish that, I want not only to check MD5 sum of the file, but also check its size, since as far as I understand this additional simple check can sophisticate falsification by several digits. May I trust the size that stat returns? I don't mean if changes were made to stat itself. I don't go that deep. But, for instance, may one compromise the file size that stat returns by hacking the directory file? Or by similar means, that do not require superuser privileges? It's Linux.

  Possible Duplicate: What is the best software for desktop recording? Hi superuser's. I would like to record some tasks in a program (i want to make a video where i will be explaining how to use a particular program) and i haven't found a good software to do it yet... I have just tested camStudio but when i hit the Record Button the computer starts working very slowly (even when recording in a small area... so i wouldn't imagine how slow it will run if recording full screen).   I cannot start Firefox on my Mac. It just says "A copy of Firefox is already open. Only one copy of Firefox can be open at a time." I have tried restarting the computer. Any fixes? You have suggested deleting the lock files in my profile, but, I don't have a profile. I was trying to fix the problem in question http://superuser.com/questions/3275/firefox-on-mac-slow-slow-slow by deleting my profile, so I deleted it, and this came up. So I cannot delete the lock files because they don't exist.

• Disabling networkmanager for a specific interface

  I'd like to do some experimentation with hostap without disabling my primary wireless interface. How do I tell networkmanager to keep its hands off a specific interface or interfaces while allowing it to continue managing all other interfaces normally? I'm using Ubuntu 9.04. (Wasn't sure if this should go on superuser or serverfault, as networkmanager isn't much of a 'server' tool - if it belongs on serverfault please feel free to move it) Edit: I've tried adding this to /etc/network/interfaces: allow-hotplug wlan2 iface wlan2 inet static address 192.168.49.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 But this has no apparent effect, even after restarting NetworkManager. • How to reuse backup on Time Machine on Snow Leopard after a logic board change, after choosing wrong

  After my logic board was replaced, I connected my laptop back to my network, and Time Machine gave me a popup, as shown on this thread: http://superuser.com/questions/78068/recycle-time-machine-for-new-machine/78264#78264 I misread the question and clicked on "Create New Backup" when I should have clicked on "Reuse Backup" to connect to my old backup file. How can I trigger that popup again? Turning Time Machine on and off does not work, and the instructions on forums to fix via terminal doesn't work because snow leopard is missing the fsaclctl command (and I'm also not familiar with terminal commands.) • Cmd+Less Than (10.8.2) not working after Xcode (4.5.x) installed

  I had to reinstall my MBP recently. I stress Cmd+Less Than a lot for switching between Xcode's main window and the Organizer for documentation. The standard OSX-shortcut for doing that is Cmd + Less Than. After installing Xcode it didn't work any longer. I saw, that Xcode uses Cmd+LT for "Edit Schemes", a rarely used option. Even after deleting the shortcut for "Edit Schemes" in Xcode, Cmd+LT didn't work. How can I get Cmd + Less Than to work again? Mac OS X Mount Lion 10.8.2 Xcode 4.5.2 I have less than 10 reputation on superuser (acutally first post here), so I can't post the answer to my question. Would yo be so kind and upvote this question, so I can officially answer the question? The question, as well as the answer is only correct, if you use German keyboard layout.

• Exchange Public Folders in Snow Leopard Mail.app

  I am using Mail.app (running snow leopard) to connect to my email account on my school's Exchange 2007 server. I get my Inbox just fine, and iCal connects to my Outlook Calendar just fine, but I cannot seem to get any of the Exchange Public Folders that I can automatically see when I am using Outlook on a Windows box. The Account Type is shown as "Exchange 2007" I did not have any luck Googling this problem, in fact most of the results I saw were dealing with the opposite problem: Remove MS Exchange Public Folders I am aware that my question is a duplicate of this: http://superuser.com/questions/103115/apple-mail-app-all-exchange-folders-not-visible but since that question did not get any responses, I am reposting.

• Is it possible to add an existing Azure VM to an Azure Virtual Network?

  Didn't think this was directly related to programming, so thought Superuser would be better than Stack Overflow.... Is it possible to add an existing Azure VM to an Azure Virtual Network if you didn't add it to the virtual network at the time of creation? I can't see an option to change which Virtual Network the VM is connected to. Do you just have to do it at the time you create the VM, and if you don't do it then you will need to re-create the VM and delete the existing one? Example of the scenario: No VM's or Virtual Networks exist I create a VM (VM1), there is no virtual network so it isn't added to one Later I create a Virtual Network in Azure (Network1) It is possible to create another VM (VM2) and connect it to the Virtual Network (Network1), but can I connect VM1 to Network1 or must I delete VM1 and re-create it to get it connected to Network1?

  I have created a truecrypt container (100GB) to store very important files with vital information hidden on my hardrive running Fedora Linux OS. Now, I want to move the container to portable hardrive. From what I read so far, you should be able to do it easily like any other file. However, I am running into problem. Fedora won't let me. It keeps giving me "Permission denied" error. I think I need to login as a root or superuser, but how do you do that on Fedora. What am I doing wrong?

  I have a very simple problem in Word 2010. I have a document with a Table of Contents, and I have the following items: 1. Title 1  [some text]   1.1 Title 1.1    [some text] I simply want to add an item 1.2. If I go at the end of Title 1.1 and press enter, an item 1.2 appears below it, but the text regarding item 1.1 stays below it all. I somehow used to be able to do it on word 2007, but I can't remember what I used to do, and before struggling in it for too long, I remembered SuperUser. Can someone answer this and maybe additionally link me to a tutorial on this ? Every one I find talks about having a text already numbered and adding a TOC in the beginning. I want to build the text all over the TOC.

• Is it illegal to download (from torrents) software that you have already legally bought?

  With Snow Leopard now out, I decided to order myself a copy. But as I bought it online, it takes six to eight weeks three to five days for to to arrive via snail mail, but I want it now. Seeing that I have already legally bought a license for Snow Leopard, can I download a retail version of Snow Leopard from a torrent, without breaking the law? I understand that the law varies from country to country, so I acknowledge that this may be a tough question to answer sufficiently. • ASUS K55VM Laptop unexpectedly shuts down

  I've read quite a few questions on SuperUser of people having laptop shutdown problems but mine is different. My laptop specs: Intel Core i7 3610QM (IvyBridge) NVIDIA GT630M 2GB and Intel GMA4000 8GB RAM Windows 7 64 Bit My laptop occasionally shuts down when playing FarCry 3. It's around 5 months old. I've played games like Crysis and it never shuts down unexpectedly. Since I experienced this shut down recently, I decided for GPU-Z to log the temperatures. The final log value at the time of shutdown were thus: GPU Core Clock [MHz] - 797.3 GPU Memory Clock [MHz] - 896.8 GPU Temperature [°C] - 89.0 GPU Load [%] - 99 Memory Controller Load [%] - 36 Video Engine Load [%] - 0 Memory Usage (Dedicated) [MB] - 535 Memory Usage (Dynamic) [MB] - 53 VDDC [V] - 1.0620 My drivers are up-to-date and I didn't encounter any BSODs at the time of shut down. It simply turns off.

• How do I check for available "Automatic Updates" via script / cli

  I asked this on superuser, but I think this may have been a more apropriate place. We are trying to automate server reboots, but one of the "gotchas" we are running into are that they want us to install updates by manually clicking "sure, install updates" during monthly Windows reboots. If I had a way to check to see if updates are in fact waiting, we'd be ok with rebooting automatically via a script and just failing if this is the case. My problem is I can't figure out how to check to see if there are in fact updates waiting to be installed, without logging in. Is there a file or particular service status I can check for? Maybe with Powershell or something similar? The current setting used is "Download updates but do not install automatically"

• Cannot change password for user postgres in postgresql

  I have made the following entry in pg_hba.conf local all all trust but still su postgres does not accept blank as password. I am not able to run psql nor pg_ctl for same reason as most of the files are owned by postgres. I often see people using constructs like: sudo su - postgres rather than sudo -u postgres -i and I'm wondering why. Similarly, I've seen: sudo su - postgres -c psql instead of sudo -u postgres psql Without the leading sudo the su versions would make some sense if you were on an old platform without sudo. But why on a less than prehisoric UNIX or Linux would you use sudo su ?

• How to fix: mac keyboard ignores "first" key pressed

  UPDATE 2012.03.19: the MBP described in this post is now broken and recycled (logic board fried). The replacement doesn't manifest the same problems. I tend to believe the problem originated in the keyboard firmware of the old MBP. Every now and then, usually after I haven't pressed a key in some time, sometimes minutes, sometimes seconds, my MBP will "swallow" the the first key I press ... say I'm logging into "superuser.com" .. I start typing my username and the textbox will show "exu" instead of "lexu" This is driving me nuts! My guess is the keyboard or it's controller goes to sleep and fails to wake up propperly ... What can I do about this? PS: I've already installed "MacBook, MacBook Pro Keyboard Firmware Update 1.0"

• Alternative to the tee command whitout STDOUT

  I'm using | sudo tee FILENAME to be able to write or append to a file for which superuser permissions are required quite often. Although I understand why it is helpful in some situation, that tee also sends its input to STDOUT again, I never ever actually used that part of tee for anything useful. In most situations, this feature only causes my screen to be filled with unwanted jitter, if I don't go the extra step and manually silence it with tee 1> /dev/null. My question: Is there is a command arround, which does exactly the same thing as tee, but does by default not output anything to STDOUT?

• Need personal music collection streaming solution

  I used to use Opera and it's built in media server feature for some time and it both worked and looked really well. It's dead now and i'm in search of a decent audio streaming solution (Windows 8) to be able to stream my music collection via http to work or whatever.. I tried couple of PHP scripts but they all looked really awful, also, tried couple of solutions mentioned here at Superuser but i wasn't really satisfied.. I tried vibestreamer as well and while it looks really nice i'm not really into installing it as an application. I've set up an WAMP server which i intend to use in this purpose. I'd be mostly satisfied with a way to browse my collection folders and pick the one i want to play, no playlists and various sorting features a la iTunes. Any suggestions? Thanks

• showing hiding toolbars with shortcuts in firefox

  I'm a webdeveloper and using firefox with the bookmarks toolbar, the webdeveloper toolbar and the google toolbar. Are there shortcuts in firefox 3.5 to hide and show these toolbars. If not, may be an add on wich works in 3.5 to create a small script to hide these toolbars, bind with a shortcut? I found keyconfig addon but won't work in 3.5. • can not connect via SSH to a remote Postgresql database

  I am trying to connect via pgAdmin3 GUI to a Postgresql database on a remote server myHost on port 5432. Server side : I have a Unix myUser that match a postgresql role. pg_hba.conf is : local all all trust host all all 127.0.0.1/32 trust Client side : I open an ssh tunnel : ssh -L 3333:myHost:5432 myUser@myHost I connect to the server via pgAdmin3 ( or via psql -h localhost -p 3333 ). I get the following error message : server closed the connection unexpectedly This probably means the server terminated abnormally before or while processing the request. I have tried to access a specific database with the superuser role using psql -h localhost -p 3333 --dbname=myDB --user=mySuperUser with no more success. What did I forget in the setup ? Thank you

• help building a PC that can image a dozen hard drives simultaneously

  Not sure if this belongs on here or SuperUser, but here goes... I'm trying to figure out how to make a mass hard drive imaging PC out of COTS parts. A dedicated imaging device can do 10 drives at a time, but costs several thousand dollars. So far, I'm thinking to use several 3-port PCI-E Firewire cards, and use some kind of Firewire-to-IDE adapter to connect the drives themselves. The "software" would consist of scripting diskpart, or some other imaging utility. The problem is that I can't seem to find any sort of adapter. I could use standard external hard drive bays, but then I'd have a dozen power cables that I need to plug in. Ugly, messy, and inefficient. I picked Firewire over USB not only for better transfer speeds, but also because FW can deliver power over the bus (and could theoretically power a hard drive). Does anyone have any input on this?
