  Hello, I'm struggling a bit with the concept of alias in Hibernate. My situation is the following: Order @OneToMany(cascade=CascadeType.ALL,mappedBy="m_order") private Set<OrderDetail> m_details; OrderDetail @ManyToOne(cascade=CascadeType.ALL) @JoinColumn(name="product_id") private Product m_product; @ManyToOne(cascade=CascadeType.ALL) @JoinColumn(name="order_id") private Order m_order; DAO c.createAlias("m_details", "detail").createCriteria("detail.m_product").add(Expression.idEq(productId)); So I want to search every order that contains a product. However, with this query it keeps returning 0 orders and I don't really see what I'm doing wrong. Thanks!

  This is a toy project I'm working on at the moment. My app contains questions with multiple choice answers. The question url is in the following format, with GET & POST mapping to different actions on the questions controller. GET: url.com/questions/:category/:difficulty => 'ask' POST: url.com/questions/:category/:difficulty => 'answer' I'm wondering if it's worth redesigning this into a RESTful style. I know I'd need to introduce answers as a resource, but I'm struggling to think of a url that would look natural for answering that question. Would a redesign be worthwhile? How would you go about structuring the urls?

• Should tests be self written in TDD?

  We run a project, which we want to solve with test driven development. I thought about some questions that came up, when initiating the project. One question was, who should write the unit-test for a feature. Should the unit-test be written by the feature-implementing programmer? Or should the unit test be written by another programmer, who defines what a method should do and the feature-implementing programmer implements the method until the tests runs? If i understand the concept of TDD in the right way. The feature-implementing programmer has to write the test by himself, because TDD is procedure with mini-iterations. So it would be too complex to have the tests written by another programmer? What would you say, should the tests in TDD written by the programmer himself or should another programmer write the tests that describes what a method can do?

  I needed to filter a list of results using the combination of two properties. A plain SQL statement would look like this: SELECT TOP 10 * FROM Person WHERE FirstName + ' ' + LastName LIKE '%' + @Term + '%' The ICriteria in NHibernate that I ended up using was: ICriteria criteria = Session.CreateCriteria(typeof(Person)); criteria.Add(Expression.Sql( "FirstName + ' ' + LastName LIKE ?", "%" + term + "%", NHibernateUtil.String)); criteria.SetMaxResults(10); It works perfectly, but I'm not sure if it is the ideal solution since I'm still learning about NHibernate's Criteria API. What are the recommended alternatives? Is there something besides Expression.Sql that would perform the same operation? I tried Expression.Like but couldn't figure out how to combine the first and last names. Should I map a FullName property to the formula "FirstName + ' ' + LastName" in the mapping class? Should I create a read only FullName property on the domain object then map it to a column?

• ESRI frameworks: java vs javascript

  I'm about to develop a web mapping application with ESRI Products like ArcGIS Server and Image Server. I can't find a good comparison between the Java Web ADF and the Javascript Framework. They're of course different because one is a full environment and the other is only client side but it's much more concise and the step to start is minimal. Another problem is that the Java Web ADF is not compatible with our current application server (JBoss 4.2.2) and require an old 4.0.2 version. Someone out there has experience that can help me?   I have a endpoint mapping a webservice which is used to insert in the dabatabase some keywords: @Transactional(readOnly = false,isolation= Isolation.SERIALIZABLE) public Source saveKW(...). The input is a request. I would like to add an interceptor on the method in order to validate the parameters. this one will read some values from the DB. i would like that this interceptor is EMBED in the transaction declared for the endpoint (or this opposite). In other words, i want them to be in the same transaction. Ideally im looking for something like this with annotation: @Transactional(readOnly = false,isolation= Isolation.SERIALIZABLE) @validator("KeyWordValidaor.class") public Source saveKW(...) where KeyWordValidaor will be class validating the parameters. • Does GIT have evil twin issues?

  In ClearCase evil twin occurs when two files are found with the same name in two different versions of the directory, and If the element OIDs are different but the names are the same. In GIT the SHA1 id is always unique and file with same name always have different SHA1 id’s. We don’t have a concept of Evil twins, but there are likely cases where there is chance for 2 or more developers creating a file with different contents with same filename in the same directory. During merge, when both files are completely different, there are chances of the developers to keep his changes alone and leave other changes resulting in code loss. Can anyone let me know if there will be issues in GIT similar to ClearCase or sine each SHA1 id is unique there won't be any Evil twin issues in GIT.

  Hi All I have been using spring for a while as my IOC. It has also a very nice way of injecting properties in your beans. Now I am participating in a new project where the IOC is Guice. I dont understand fully the concept how should I inject properties in to my beans using Guice. The question : Is it actually possible to inject raw properties ( strings , ints ) into my guice beans. If the answer is no , than maybe you know some nice Properties Framework for java. Because right now I wanted to use the ResourceBundle class for simple properties management in my app. But after using spring for a while this just dont seem seriously enought for me.

• Have boost effect on lucene/compass field search.

  Hi there, In our compass mapping, we're boosting "better" documents to push them up in the list of search results. Something like this: <boost name="boostFactor" default="1.0"/> <property name="name"><meta-data>name</meta-data></property> While this works fine for fulltext search, it does not when doing a field search, e.g. the boost is ignored when searching something like name:Peter Is there any way to enable boosting for field searches?   Last summer, I asked a question regarding how to add new object to an IList mapped as a one-to-many with NHibernate. One of the answers let me to this paragraph in the documentation: Please note that NHibernate does not support bidirectional one-to-many associations with an indexed collection (list, map or array) as the "many" end, you have to use a set or bag mapping. While I am pretty sure I understand what this paragraph says, I have no idea why or how to work around this limitation. As I am now again working with a model that seems to require a "bidirectional one-to-many association with an index collection", I figured the time was right for follow-up questions: Why does NHibernate have this limitation on associations? It is my impression that the guys behind NHibernate are quite clever, so I assume there is a pretty good reason. What are the common workarounds for this shortcoming? Making the collection a non-indexed bag and adding an explicit Position property to the child class? Any better solutions?

• Is there a Windows API to modify file type associations for an extension?

  I'm looking for a way to programatically tweak the particulars of a file association on a Windows system. For example, the "Application User to Perform this Action" setting for the "Open" action for a particular file type. Clearly I could do this by modifying the registry directly, but if there is an API I'd prefer to use that as it would likely be more resilient to changes in the OS handling of mapping extensions to applications. For my purposes I'm needing to write this in VBScript (.VBS) file because it is part of a package to be used with VMWare ThinApp that mandates it. However, I'll port/wrap/whatever I need to make this week, so I am open to any solution (including using the .NET framework)

• Flex Force Decimal

  Hi, I'm looking for a regex or a way to format the NumberValidator so that only decimal places are allowed. The domain="real" allows you to put integer values, but I need to force the user to but in 2.0 if they want an integer. This is because they pass through a Castor mapping file, it complains if it gets an integer when it expects a decimal. I dont want to restrict the number of decimal places, just insist that there must be a point, and a number after it. Any help would be much appreciated.

• Compiling a C program with a specific architecture

  I was recently fighting some problems trying to compile an open source library on my Mac that depended on another library and got some errors about incompatible library architectures. Can somebody explain the concept behind compiling a C program for a specific architecture? I have seen the -arch compiler flag before and have seen values passed to it such as ppc, i386 and x86_64 which I assume maps to the CPU "language", but my understanding stops there. If one program uses a particular architecture, do all libraries that it loads need to be on the same architecture as well? How can I tell what architecture a given program/process is running under?

• Persistence provider for Java that supports final fields

  I'm very new to Java but I've been developing a habit to use final wherever possible declaring immutability which i think is a good thing. (Consider f#) I've read that JPA does not support final fields. Hibernate, TopLink? I'm not sure about these but i prefer JPA for now. Is that even possible theoretically - let's say through reflection - to modify final fields after creation? My guess would be... NO :) What would be certainly possible for a persistence solution is to support constructors with parameters. At least i see no reason that would make this impossible. Mapping would be a little tricky i guess. This is an alternative solution. Suggestions?

• spring web application context is not loaded from jar file in WEB-INF/lib when running tomcat in eclipse

  I am experimenting with spring, maven, and eclipse but stumbling on a weird issue. I am running Eclipse Helios SR1 with the STS (Spring tools suite) plugin which includes the Maven plugin also. What i want to achieve is a spring mvc webapp which uses an application context loaded from a local application context xml file, but also from other application contexts in jar files dependencies included in WEB-INF/lib. What i'd ultimately like to do is have my persistence layer separated in its own jar file but containing its own spring context files with persistence specific configuration (e.g a jpa entityManagerFactory for example). So to experiment with loading resources from jar dependencies, i created a simple maven project from eclipse, which defines an applicationContext.xml file in src/main/resources Inside, i define a bean <bean id="mybean" class="org.test.MyClass" /> and create the class in the org.test package I run mvn-install from eclipse, which generates me a jar file containing my class and the applicationContext.xml file: testproj.jar |_META-INF |_org |_test |_MyClass.class |_applicationContext.xml I then create a spring mvc project from the Spring template projects provided by STS. I have configured an instance of Tomcat 7.0.8 , and also an instance of springSource tc Server within eclipse. Deploying the newly created project on both servers works without problem. I then add my previous project as a maven dependency of the mvc project. the jar file is correctly added in the Maven Dependencies of the project. In the web.xml that is generated, i now want to load the applicationContext.xml from the jar file as well as the existing one generated for the project. • Finding distance travelled by robot using Optical Flow

  Hi, I'm working on a project right now in which we are developing an autonomous robot. I have to basically find out the distance travelled by the robot between any 2 intervals. I'm using OpenCV, and using the Optical Flow functions of OpenCV, I'm able to find out the velocity/distance of each pixel in 2 different images. Using this information, I want to be able to find out the distance travelled by the robot in the interval between those 2 images. I thought of a way in which we could develop an input output mapping between the distance travelled by pixels and the distance travelled by the bot (using some tests). In this way, using neural networks, we would be able to find the relationship. However, the optical flow would depend on the distance of the camera from the pixel, which would cause problems. Is there any way to solve this problem?

• Mandatory profile on Terminal server fails to load. Userenv.log debug

  Hi, We're having a lot of corrupted profiles lately on our profile share. At the moment I have no clue why, but I decided to switch to one mandatory profile since the users can all use the same and there is no need to have seperate profiles for each user. Here's what I did. I logged into the Terminal server with a new user and configured some stuff (imported certificates and a few files). Then I logged out. Later as admin I copied the profile to another server and renamed it to bsilo. I made sure the user hive settings were adjusted. Everyone had access to the hive. I shared the bsilo folder with full access for everyone. I set the NTFS permissions to read, read & execute, list folder contents for domain users. I also renamed NTUSER.DAT to NTUSER.MAN. Now I set a env variable %manprofile% on the Terminal server that points to \server\bsilo\ntuser.man I set the env var as terminal services profile path for a test user. When I log in I as the user get the following output The system cannot find the path specified. Can somebody point me in the right direction. • nHibernate session - Using repository pattern in Web, windows, wcf etc...

  I recently posted a question which was answered by Bryan Watts, regarding generic repository for nHibernate. I'm trying to design my data access to allow various facets - from ASP.net, WCF and Windows Forms / Windows services. I'm a bit confused re: session management etc.. How would I handle this? I've been checking out code such as: http://membranecms.googlecode.com/svn/ and questions such as: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1207833/nhibernate-linq-session-management But what do i do if i don't just do things in a web based environment..? Do i need to create different repositories for each client? Or do i pass in the ISession into the (for example) UserRepository constructor..? ... as a side note I'm using nHibernate.Linq Also using fluent nHibernate to config my mapping

  I have a Sharp Architecture based app using Fluent NHibernate with Automapping. I have the following Enum: public enum Topics { AdditionSubtraction = 1, MultiplicationDivision = 2, DecimalsFractions = 3 } and the following Class: public class Strategy : BaseEntity { public virtual string Name { get; set; } public virtual Topics Topic { get; set; } public virtual IList Items { get; set; } } If I create an instance of the class thusly: Strategy s = new Strategy { Name = "Test", Topic = Topics.AdditionSubtraction }; it Saves correctly (thanks to this mapping convention: public class EnumConvention : IPropertyConvention, IPropertyConventionAcceptance { public void Apply(FluentNHibernate.Conventions.Instances.IPropertyInstance instance) { instance.CustomType(instance.Property.PropertyType); } public void Accept(FluentNHibernate.Conventions.AcceptanceCriteria.IAcceptanceCriteria criteria) { criteria.Expect(x = x.Property.PropertyType.IsEnum); } } However, upon retrieval, I get an error regarding an attempt to convert Int64 to Topics. This works fine in SQL Server. Any ideas for a workaround? Thanks.

  Most freelance developers are essentially contractors - working full time and often hired through another company. What are the best options for real freelancing or small business built around development skills? (I am only looking for local clients, odesk etc is not interesting) Most options open for small companies are web sites. But most clients don't want to pay much, and there are lots of people that are willing to do it for very little money. Think if you want to do money that way you must be a "web site" business. Think the best option should be to work for companies spending a lot of resources on web and db? How could I get in touch with them? Other ideas? Part of my concept is to use some off-shoring to complement my skillset, so i should be able to do PHP or Drupal even if I am not at expert level.

  Can I see one example that would make this piece of code compile? public IEnumerable<RouteBase> Routes { get { return new List<Route>() { new Route(...) } } } What would you do if RouteCollection.MapRoute() didn't exist? I'm trying to put my Controller in charge of mapping routes, not Global.asax.cs. public IEnumerable<RouteBase> Routes is a member of my Controller. If the Controller is responsible for a Route, it's a bad idea to decouple the Route by using routes.MapRoute() in Global.asax.cs.
