• Issue with plotting daily data using ggplot

  I tried to plot daily data from 9 variables in ggplot, but the graph I get cannot handle the date variable properly. The x axis is unreadable and its impossible to read the plot. I'm guessing there's an issue with the handling of dates. • Recommendations for C# controls that can be used to create a hierarchical list of prioritised items?

  I need to be able to display and edit a hierarchical list of tasks in a C# app. It can either be a Windows form app, or ASP.NET. Basically, I want similar behaviour to the way Microsoft Project handles tasks. The control would need to: 1) Maintain a list of items made up of several fields 2) Each item can have a number of children (at least 3 levels of nesting) 3) It needs to be very easy to change the parents/children of an item 4) It needs to be very easy to edit the fields (as fast as changing cells in Excel) 5) It needs to be very easy to reorder the items by dragging and dropping or cut and paste 6) If I can easily connect the control to a database, even better Anyone got any recommendations for controls for me to look at?

• Use LINQ to SQL results inside SQL Server stored procedure

  Note: I'm not trying to call a SQL Server stored proc using a L2SQL datacontext. I use LINQPad for some fairly complex "reporting" that takes L2SQL output saved to an Array and is processed further. For example, it's usually much easier to do multiple levels of grouping with LINQ to Objects instead of trying to optimize a T-SQL query to run in a reasonable amount of time. What would be the easiest way to take the end result of one of these "applications" and use that in a SQL Server 2008 stored proc? The idea is to use the data for a Reporting Services Report, rather than copying and pasting into Excel (manual labor). The reports need to be accessible on the report server (not using the Report Server control in an application). I could output CSV and read that somehow via command line exec, but that seems like a hack. Thanks for your help.

  Hi, I am using data grid view to display items as excel spread sheet in VB.NET. I got a table named CostTypes with column names [CostTypeID, CostType] and values [1,External] and [2,Internal] (These are constant but more values can be added to table). I want to create columns with names of the values[External , Internal] in DataGridView. If I use databiding directly I get columns [CostTypeID,CostType] which is not what I am looking for. If some one could explain how to create columns at runtime in datagridview or how to retrieve data from data base using LINQ so that [External , Internal] turn out to be columns that would be great. • How to export data which are mapped to enumerations

  I have a set of data which needs to be imported from a excel sheet, lets take the simplest example. Note: the data might eventually support uploading any locale. e.g. assuming one of the fields denoting a user is gender mapped to an enumeration and stored in the database as 0 for male and 1 for female. 0 and 1 being short values. If I have to import the values I cannot expect the user to punch in numbers (since they are not intuitive and is cumbersome when the enumerations are bigger), what would be the correct way to map to enumerations. Should we ask them to provide a string value in these cases (e.g. male or female) and provide the transformation to a enum in our code by wring a method public static Gender Gender.fromString(String value)

  I'm not really familiar with PHP exporting to excel or csv, but I'm using PHP MySQL for a local point of sale. According to the code below, this actually works..But not in the way it should be ! All records are placed as 1 row inside the csv file, how can i fix that ? Also, How would I stop overwriting the same file...I mean When I click on a Button to export the csv, it should check if there is an existing csv file, If there is--Create new one !   Hi. I got a part on my page I want to improve. It's a file upload that users can add their contacts from files like excel, csv & outlook. I read the contacts and place them in the database, so what I would like to do is to have a regular icon that spins while that operation is doing that, how could I do that? Ajax? I don't want progress bar for the file upload but the operation for reading the file EDIT: I want to know how to make this work with the add to database using ajax. like should I use a updatepanel?   How is it possible to change the displayed order of columns from a DataTable? For example, dataTable "dt" contains two columns "a" and "b". I bind it to a GridView like this: gridView.DataSource = dt; gridView.DataBind(); But I'd like the GridView to display "b" first (leftmost). • code folding in Visual Studio for F#

  I find that I tend to write long source files in F#. Some open source projects in F# also have long source files, e.g. FPersec and F# for excel. So it would be very helpful if code folding (even very limited support) is available in VS for F#. E.g. in a module, we can fold out functions that are stable, only leave functions that are subject to change unfold. Is this feature easy to be supported, e.g. by a third party vendor?

• Detecting regional settings (List Separator) from web

  After having the unpleasant surprise that Comma Seperated Value (CSV) files are not necessarily comma-separated, I'm trying to find out if there is any way to detect what the regional settings list separator value is on the client machine from http request. Scenario is as follows: A user can download some data in CSV format from web site (RoR, if it matters). That CSV file is generated on the fly, sent to the user, and most of the time double-clicked and opened in MS Excel on Windows machine at the destination. Now, if the user has ',' set as the list separator, the data is properly arranged in columns, but if any other separator (';' is widely used here) is set, it all just gets thrown into a single column. So, is there any way to detect what separator is used on the client machine, and generate the file accordingly? I have a sinking feeling that it is not, but I'd like to be sure before I pass the 'can't be done, sorry' line to the customer :)

  I was under the impression that when you double click a file (or choose 'Open With' from the right click menu), Windows simply calls the application with the filename as the parameter. Something like this: C: App.exe file.abc However, I just double clicked an .xls file and then checked the PEB of the Excel instance that sprang up. To my surprise the commandline did not contain the filename as a parameter. So that set me wondering. What exactly is mechanism Windows uses to have a file opened by a relevant application? Is there a special API that each application that supports such facility must expose?

• How do I add a VSTO project as a reference to a unit testing project?

  In order not to pollute my projects with unit tests, I like to create a separate project for my unit tests; I add a reference to the project under test in the unit tests project. However, this isn't working that well with my VSTO excel add-in projects: when I create a separate unit test project and go to Add Reference Projects, there is no project to pick. What I have done so far is Add Reference Browse, and pick the add-in dll from the debug folder. I have also run into issues from time to time with this, with the reference suddenly not working, requiring to remove/re-add the dll reference. Can anybody explain why a VSTO project doesn't show up as a regular project? And is there a better way to go about it than what I am doing presently?

  In my application, I have a dictionary of phrases that are used throughout of the application. This same dictionary is used to create PDFs and Excel Spreadsheets. The dictionary looks like so: GLOBAL_MRD_VOCAB = { 'fiscal_year': _('Fiscal Year'), 'region': _('Region / Focal Area'), 'prepared_by': _('Preparer Name'), 'review_cycle':_('Review Period'), ... snip ... } In the code to produce the PDF, I have: fy = dashboard_v.fiscal_year fy_label = GLOBAL_MRD_VOCAB['fiscal_year'] rg = dashboard_v.dashboard.region rg_label = GLOBAL_MRD_VOCAB['region'] rc = dashboard_v.review_cycle rc_label = GLOBAL_MRD_VOCAB['review_cycle'] pb = dashboard_v.prepared_by pb_label = GLOBAL_MRD_VOCAB['prepared_by'] Now, when the PDF is produced, in the PDF, I don't see these labels but rather, I see: <django.utils.functional.__proxy__ object at 0x10106fdd0> Can somebody help me with this?   Hi all, I am csv.reader to pull in info from a very long sheet. I am doing work on that data set and then I am using the xlwt package to give me a workable excel file. However, I get this error: UnicodeDecodeError: 'ascii' codec can't decode byte 0x92 in position 34: ordinal not in range(128) My question to you all is, how can I find exactly where that error is in my data set? Also, is there some code that I can write which will look through my data set and find out where the issues lie (because some data sets run without the above error and others have problems)?

• Small, editable table of strings. Which Forms control do I want? (.NET)

  I have a small array of structs, each struct has three fields, all strings. I want to display these structs in a grid, let the user edit the strings a la Excel, and then retrieve the edited strings of course. Which WinForms control is best for this? Tried a DataGridView but setting the DataSource to the array of structs doesn't seem to work. There are myriad controls with similar names but I can't figure out what does what. All the examples I've found are geared toward using a database as the data source--I just have a simple array.

E.g. if I have a dataframe like this: Widget Type Energy egg 1 20 egg 2 30 jap 3 50 jap 1 60 Then collapsing by Widget, with Energy the dependent variable, Energy~Widget, would yield Widget Energy egg 25 jap 55 In Excel the closest functionality might be "Pivot tables" and I've worked out how to do it in python (http://alexholcombe.wordpress.com/2009/01/26/summarizing-data-by-combinations-of-variables-with-python/), and here's an example with R using doBy library to do something very related (http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg02643.html), but is there an easy way to do the above? And even better is there anything built into the ggplot2 library to create plots that collapse across some variables?

  Did you use teamviewer? (comic question i know... Who doesn't use it?) Do you have any idea how does teamviewer make connection even if i am behind the router, firewall, switch and my local firewall..? I'm trying to imagine a connection that is between remote machinge and my computer. Remote machine is sending the packets (and its header (for instance, destination IP, message body)) to me but it only knows my id number(which is given by my local teamviewer application). And this packets are reaching to my computer even if there is a juniper firewall (and also my windows firewall). What kind a message body is recieving by computer? (of course it is not like xml, text, html, excel :) Do you have any idea? PS. Please share your knowledge like you are explaining to beginner level user.

• Scanning FedEx labels into a visual basic program

  I have a program that has tracking numbers entered into it and it stores them in a database and i would like to add a scanner to the mix. The scanner is acting like a keyboard and scannes just fine, the problem is scanning a FedEx number gives a 32 digit number and i am only iterested in the tracking number portion of it. I saw an example on the web for an excel macro and tried to modify it but it doesnt seem to work. Is there something i could do to just get the 12 digit number? This is what it looks like so far. • How to deal with large result sets with Linq to Entities?

  I have a fairly complex linq to entities query that I display on a website. It uses paging so I never pull down more than 50 records at a time for display. But I also want to give the user the option to export the full results to Excel or some other file format. My concern is that there could potentially be a large # of records all being loaded into memory at one time to do this. Is there a way to process a linq result set 1 record at a time like you could w/ a datareader so only 1 record is really being kept in memory at a time? I'd appreciate any help. Thanks

• Visually Viewing and Editing a Two-Dimensional Array - VB/C#

  I've never personally used any of the Data controls within Visual Studio. I need to view and edit a two-dimensional byte array, 16x15 objects. Is there any control capable of editing this information? I've tried to access data with the DataViewGrid, but am not sure how to use it. It would be great to edit this information via rows and columns, like how you can in Excel. Thank you! Times like this I wish I could just use multiple text boxes and assign them each an index value. Oh VB6 how I miss you :P
