"Refreshing" an XML feed on iPhone/Mac OSX

Hi all, I'm curious for those of you who are building iPhone apps based on REST/SOAP/XML-RPC or simply pulling down a dynamic XML feed, what does it mean exactly to you when a user says 'refresh' the feed? The straight forward way is to populate some collection, say an NSMutableArray, with whatever you bring down from the feed. If a widget on the UI is available to refresh, I typically do something like: [myMutableArray removeAllObjects]; // follow steps to repopulate myMutableArray It seems this is the least efficient algorithm for refreshing an XML feed. For instance many folks who are building Twitter clients, are appending changes to their existing feed, versus bringing down the entire feed in its complete form again. What kind of algorithms are you using to "refresh" your models when speaking to a server-side data source? Thanks all.

php time 2 hours wrong for only 50% some users

I am having huge issues with php time. For some reason it shows a different time (by 2 hours) to some users and the correct time to other users. The code is H:i:s d-M-y T when I view the page in a browser from my PC it tells me its 11am when infact its 9am, when I check via a browser using one my RDP's I get the correct time. Both PC's are in the country (uk) both PC's have the same system time etc. Tried setting the timezone default, but no matter what I do the server still shows some users the correct time, and other users the time 2 hour forward, any ideas? the code is echo gmdate("H:i:s d-M-y T"); <?php echo gmdate("H:i:s d-M-y T"); ?>

Hi, Which of these two forms of Array Initialization is better in Ruby? I feel the second one is a bit inferior when it comes to performance due to the numerous amount of Array copies that has to happen. I'm basically wanting to do this: class UILockable<T> : T where T : UIWidget { } However, this doesn't work. I've seen people recommend that you do this: class UILockable<T> where T : UIWidget { private T _base; } This would require me to override each function UILockable would need and forward it to T. This is impossible since T may derive from UIWidget and have unique abstract/virtual methods of its own. Is there no way to simply inherit from T?

WhatsApp - writing a clone (iphone, android, wp7)

I am trying to create a instant messaging app very much like whatsapp I suppose. My resources I have available to me are Server development in C# (REST Service, dedicated server app etc) And currently an android development platform using eclipse (iphone, wp7 to follow later). I have done some development in Android before but I don't have any idea where to start an application like this. My guess would be it would work with UDP / TCP or similar ? I currently have a shared server for an asp.net website but I presume this wouldn't be ideal, I could essential setup a web service on the server and get a client to publish his messages there but then this would mean that the receivers would have to POLL (PULL) every 5 minutes or so - so I guess this wouldn't be real time Do I need to use UDP here ? And I presume platforms like Iphone, Android and WP7 will not have any issues sending msgs by UDP - if that is how its done. I look forward to any help or guidance.

Custom Header Menu in Android App (How To)

I'm trying to implement a custom header menu in my Android application and I'm wondering what the standard or best practice for creating a header menu. I'm thinking something like the facebook app that displays a log and has some action items like triggering a search and possibly return back to the main activity. Tab Layout doesn't seem to be what I'm looking for. I found a tutorial here that might be close to what I'm looking for but not sure. It seems a bit redundant to instantiate a menu in every Activity. Seems like there would be a way to decouple the Activity from the menu, or at least more loosely couple it. Perhaps I need to implement something with Fragments but I'm sort of new, so I'm not sure yet. Looking forward to your suggestions or hearing how you've implemented something like this. Thanks!

New to Git. Made a big mistake with git commit and ended up at an older commit

I'm new to Git and I've made a huge mistake. Git kept prompting me with git - rejected master -> master (non-fast-forward). But, I still committed by using: --force This was disastrous, the whole project changed back to the stage it was at about a week ago. I've lost so many changes. I seem to have been pushed back to an earlier commit. Is there anyway I can get back to one of my newer commits? As I have made an enormous amount of changes and need to get them back. Thanks.

From what I've read the Redirect Host response has something to do with the fact that the two hosts are in the same network and there being a shorter route (or so I understood). They are in fact in the same physical network, but why would there be a better route if they are not on the same subnet (they can't see each other)? What am I missing? Trying to configure HWIC-3G-HSPA

I'm trying to configure a couple of Cisco 1941 routes. The are both identical routers. Each as a HWIC-1T (Smart Serial interface) and a HWIC-3G-HSPA 3G interface. These routers are to be sent to remote sites. We have connectivity to one of the sites but if remote site A gors down we lose connectivity to remote site B. The HWIC-1T is the primary WAN interface using frame relay joining the two remote sites We want the HWIC-3G-HSPA to be usable for direct connectivity from head office to remote site B, and also the HWIC-3G-HSPA is do be used for comms between the remote sites when the frame relay is down (happens quite a bit). I initialy tried to do dynamic routing using EIGRP however in my lab setup of laptop - 1941 - 1941 - laptop, I was unable to get end to end connectivity. I later settled on static routing and have got end to end connectivity but only over frame relay, not the HWIC-3G-HSPA. I've tried using kron to ping the local HWIC-3G-HSPA interface (cellular 0/1/0) every minute but that hasn't been successful. Manually pinging the IP assigned (by the telco) to ce0/1/0 does bring the interface up. Any ideas? Thanks

From what I've read the Redirect Host response has something to do with the fact that the two hosts are in the same network and there being a shorter route (or so I understood). I've got a problem with RegEx and Delphi 2k9 (Win32). I get the following Error: First chance exception at $7C812AFB. Exception class Exception with message 'TPerlRegEx.Compile() - Please specify a regular expression in RegEx first'. I've got the latest version of TPerlRegEx from the website. Using its defualt settings (Using DLL) I'm including demo source code. At the moment, I don't think it will be easy to change the schema since this was decided between vendors and I would not want to go this route (if possible) as it will slow down progress quite a bit. I have been mostly working with the generated classes so I'm not entirely familiar with the process that generates these classes. A simple example of the "property customization" would be great! Alternative method of generating the Java classes would be fine as long as the schema can still be used.

How can this C and PHP programmer learn Ruby and Rails?

I came from a C, php and bash background, it was easy to learn because they all have the same C structure, which I can associate with what I already know. Then 2 years ago I learned Python and I learned it quite well, Python is easier for me to learn than Ruby. Then since last year, I was trying to learn Ruby, then Rails, and I admit, until now I still couldn't get it, the irony is that those are branded as easy to learn, but for a seasoned programmer like me, I just couldn't associate it with what I learned before, I have 2 books on both Ruby and Rails, and when I'm reading it nothing is absorbed into my mind, and I'm close to giving up... In ruby, I'm having a hard time grasping the concepts of blocks, and why there's @variables that can be accessed by other functions, and what does $variable and :variable do? And in Rails, why there's function like this_is_another_function_that_do_this, so thus ruby, is it just a naming convention or it's auto-generated with thisvariable _can_do_this_function. I'm still puzzled that where all those magic concepts and things came from? And now, 1 year of trying and absorbing, but still no progress... Edit: To summarize: How can I learn about blocks, and how can it be related to concepts from PHP/C? VB6 app not executing as scheduled task unless user is logged on

Hi Would greatly apprechiate some help on this one! It may be a tricky one. :) Problem I have an VB6 application which is set up as scheduled task. It starts every time, but when executing CreateObject it fails if user is not logged on to computer. I am looking for information on what could cause this. Primary suspicion is that some Windows API fails. Key points Behaviour confirmed on Windows 2000, 2003, 2008 and Vista. The application executes as user X at scheduled time, executed by Windows Task Scheduler. It executes every time. Application does start! -- If user X is logged on via RDP it runs perfectly. (Note that user doesn't need to be connected, only logged on) -- If user X is not logged on to computer the application fails. Failure point Application fails when using CreateObject() to instansiate a DCOM object which is also part of the application. The DCOM objects declare .dll-references at startup (globally/on top of .bas-file) and run a small startup function. Failure must be during startup, possibly in one of the .dll-declarations. Thoughts After some Googling my initial suspicion was directed at MAPI. From what I could see MAPI required user to be logged on. The application has MAPI references. But even with all MAPI references removed it still does not work. What is the difference if an user is logged on? Registry mapping? Environment? explorer.exe is running. Isn't the user logged on when application executes as the user? What info would help? A definitive answer would be truly great. Any information regarding any VB6 feature/Windows API that could act differently depending on wether user is logged on or not would definitively help. Similar experiences may lead me in the right direction. Tips on debuggin this. Thanks! :)

iPhone SDK - Comparing characters in string

Basically what I'm trying to do is compare 2 strings one from a plist and one from the user's input. I use a while loop to step through each character and compare it and if true then I increase an integer then once the loop has finished I work out the percentage correct / similarity of the plist answer and the user's answer. I seem to be having a problem however as the only return I'm getting is 0. Below is the code I'm using... The code below is all functioning and the question no longer requires answering... Can't Prevent Nested Div's from Overflowing when using Percent Sizes and Padding in CSS?

I want to be able to layout nested divs with these properties: width: 100% height: 100% padding: 10px I want it to be such that, the children are 100% width and height of the remaining space after padding is calculated, not before. Otherwise, when I have a document like the below example, the child makes the scrollbars appear. But the scrollbars are not the main issue, the fact that the child stretches beyond the width of the parent container is. I can use all position: absolute declarations, but that doesn't seem right. But, after 4 hours of research, trial-and-error, and head-banging I haven't been able to resolve it. Please help. My goal is to get a dbms_xmldom.DOMNodeList that contains "ERRORS" nodes. Why am I getting the extra xmlns="" using LinqToXML?

Hello all, I'm using LinqToXML to generate a piece of XML. Everything works great except I'm throwing in some empty namespace declarations somehow. Does anyone out there know what I'm doing incorrectly? Function lfit in numerical recipes, providing a test function

Hi I am trying to fit collected data to a polynomial equation and I found the lfit function from Numerical Recipes. I only have access to the second edition, so am using that. I have read about the lfit function and its parameters, one of which is a function pointer, given in the documentation as void (*funcs)(float, float [], int)) with the help The user supplies a routine funcs(x,afunc,ma) that returns the ma basis functions evaluated at x = x in the array afunc[1..ma]. I am struggling to understand how this lfit function works. An example function I found is given below: void fpoly(float x, float p[], int np) /*Fitting routine for a polynomial of degree np-1, with coe?cients in the array p[1..np].*/ { int j; p[1]=1.0; for (j=2;j<=np;j++) p[j]=p[j-1]*x; } When I run through the source code for the lfit function in gdb I can see no reference to the funcs pointer. When I try and fit a simple data set with the function, I get the following error message. Numerical Recipes run-time error... gaussj: Singular Matrix ...now exiting to system... Clearly somehow a matrix is getting defined with all zeroes. I am going to involve this function fitting in a large loop so using another language is not really an option. Hence why I am planning on using C/C++. compiler warning at C++ template base class

I get a compiler warning, that I don't understand in that context, when I compile the "Child.cpp" from the following code. (Don't wonder: I stripped off my class declarations to the bare minuum, so the content will not make much sense, but you will see the problem quicker). I get the warning with VS2003 and VS2008 on the highest warning level. The code AbstractClass.h : #include <iostream> template<typename T> class AbstractClass { public: virtual void Cancel(); // { std::cout << "Abstract Cancel" << std::endl; }; virtual void Process() = 0; }; //outside definition. if I comment out this and take the inline //definition like above (currently commented out), I don't get //a compiler warning template<typename T> void AbstractClass<T>::Cancel() { std::cout << "Abstract Cancel" << std::endl; } Child.h : #include "AbstractClass.h" class Child : public AbstractClass<int> { public: virtual void Process(); }; Child.cpp : #include "Child.h" #include <iostream> void Child::Process() { std::cout << "Process" << std::endl; } The warning The class "Child" is derived from "AbstractClass". In "AbstractClass" there's the public method "AbstractClass::Cancel()". If I define the method outside of the class body (like in the code you see), I get the compiler warning... AbstractClass.h(7) : warning C4505: 'AbstractClass::Cancel' : unreferenced local function has been removed with [T=int] ...when I compile "Child.cpp". I do not understand this, because this is a public function and the compiler can't know if I later reference this method or not. And, in the end, I reference this method, because I call it in main.cpp and despite this compiler warning, this method works if I compile and link all files and execute the program: //main.cpp #include <iostream> #include "Child.h" int main() { Child child; child.Cancel(); //works, despite the warning } If I do define the Cancel() function as inline (you see it as out commented code in AbstractClass.h), then I don't get the compiler warning. Of course my program works, but I want to understand this warning or is this just a compiler mistake? Furthermore, if do not implement AbsctractClass as a template class (just for a test purpose in this case) I also don't get the compiler warning...?
