  • How can I fall in love with Math? Again?

    - by gotts
After reading How to not sort by average rating by Evan Miller I was really inspired to learn some more math. But after thinking about it for a while I didn't find a way I can use beyond-trivial math in my pet projects.. Or probably it is a moment like "You are not aware that you are not aware" and I should learn more math before I can start to see great examples of how I can apply it?

  • Can it be done in a more elegant way with the Swing Timer?

    - by Roman
    Bellow is the code for the simplest GUI countdown. Can the same be done in a shorter and more elegant way with the usage of the Swing timer? import javax.swing.JFrame; import javax.swing.JLabel; import javax.swing.SwingUtilities; public class CountdownNew { static JLabel label; // Method which defines the appearance of the window. public static void showGUI() { JFrame frame = new JFrame("Simple Countdown"); frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE); label = new JLabel("Some Text"); frame.add(label); frame.pack(); frame.setVisible(true); } // Define a new thread in which the countdown is counting down. public static Thread counter = new Thread() { public void run() { for (int i=10; i>0; i=i-1) { updateGUI(i,label); try {Thread.sleep(1000);} catch(InterruptedException e) {}; } } }; // A method which updates GUI (sets a new value of JLabel). private static void updateGUI(final int i, final JLabel label) { SwingUtilities.invokeLater( new Runnable() { public void run() { label.setText("You have " + i + " seconds."); } } ); } public static void main(String[] args) { SwingUtilities.invokeLater(new Runnable() { public void run() { showGUI(); counter.start(); } }); } }

  • Possible to split one JAX-WS service across multiple source files?

    - by Rob S.
Hi everyone, Is it possible to split a web service in to multiple classes and still provide a single path to the web service? I know this isn't possible because of the duplicate url-pattern values. It sort of illustrates where we're wanting to go :) <endpoint name="OneBigService" implementation="SmallImpl1" url-pattern="/OneBigService"/> <endpoint name="OneBigService" implementation="SmallImpl2" url-pattern="/OneBigService"/> Basically, how do avoid having one monolithic @WebService class? Thanks! Rob

  • Automatic music rating based on listening habits

    - by marco92w
I've created a Winamp-like music player in Delphi. Not so complex, of course. Just a simple one. But now I would like to add a more complex feature: Songs in the library should be automatically rated based on the user's listening habits. This means: The application should "understand" if the user likes a song or not. And not only whether he/she likes it but also how much. My approach so far (data which could be used): Simply measure how often a song was played per time. Start counting time when the song was added to the library so that recent songs don't have any disadvantage. Measure how long a song was played on average (minutes). Starting a song but directly change to another one should have a bad influence on the ranking since the user didn't seem to like the song. ... Could you please help me with this problem? I would just like to have some ideas. I don't need the implementation in Delphi.

  • The Immerman-Szelepcsenyi Theorem

    - by Daniel Lorch
In the Immerman-Szelepcsenyi Theorem, two algorithms are specified that use non-determinisim. There is a rather lengthy algorithm using "inductive counting", which determines the number of reachable configurations for a given non-deterministic turing machine. The algorithm looks like this: Let m_{i+1}=0 For all configurations C Let b=0, r=0 For all configurations D Guess a path from I to D in at most i steps If found Let r=r+1 If D=C or D goes to C in 1 step Let b=1 If r<m_i halt and reject Let m_{i+1}=m_{i+1}+b I is the starting configuration. m_i is the number of configurations reachable from the starting configuration in i steps. This algorithm only calculates the "next step", i.e. m_i+1 from m_i. This seems pretty reasonable, but since we have nondeterminisim, why don't we just write: Let m_i = 0 For all configurations C Guess a path from I to C in at most i steps If found m_i = m_i + 1 What is wrong with this algorithm? I am using nondeterminism to guess a path from I to C, and I verify reachability I am iterating through the list of ALL configurations, so I am sure to not miss any configuration I respect space bounds I can generate a certificate (the list of reachable configs) I believe I have a misunderstanding of the "power" of non-determinisim, but I can't figure out where to look next. I am stuck on this for quite a while and I would really appreciate any help.

  • What's the best SOAP client library for Python, and where is the documentation for it?

    - by blackrobot
I've never used SOAP before and I'm sort of new to Python. I'm doing this to get myself acquainted with both technologies. I've installed SOAPlib and I've tried to read their Client documentation, but I don't understand it too well. Is there anything else I can look into which is more suited for being a SOAP Client library for Python? Edit: Just in case it helps, I'm using Python 2.6.

  • How to filter and format email text and forward to customers?

    - by understack

Mostly I want to remove few 'fixed' lines which are always present in email body. Do I need to run some sort of PHP process to do it? Is it possible to do it on email server itself? EDIT I have got cpanel access.

  • Disable TSQL script check?

    - by grady
Hi, lets say I have a script like that: if(some condition) begin select somecolumn from sometable end Lets say, that "somecolumn" does not exist and the condition is not true, which means the select is NOT executed. Even though the select would not be executed, the script is not valid, Management Studio complains about the missing column "somecolumn". Question: Can I somehow disable this sort of check so that the script is executed and since the if is not true, it will never notice that the column is missing? Thanks :-)

  • Sorting a DropDownList? - C#, ASP.NET

    - by scrot
I'm curious as to the best route (more looking towards simplicity, not speed or efficiency) to sort a DropDownList in C#/ASP.NET - I've looked at a few recommendations but they aren't clicking well with me. Edit: Folks, I do not have control over how the data comes into the DropDownList - I cannot modify the SQL.

  • Providing an application data update from a website

    - by Craig Johnston
I need to provide an update to application data as a download from a website. The update would actually just be the replacing of some data files with some updated ones. The update, which I assume would be some sort of setup package type program, would need to be able to do the following: access the file system and registry to determine where files should be copied to supply the files to be copied provide strong security so the data files cannot be downloaded or used by the wrong people What would be best way to achieve all of the above?

  • Finder conceals network connections from lsof?

    - by jdizzle
If I use the Finder's Go-Connect to Server and connect to an smb/afs, I can see the connection in netstat. But I can't see it in lsof. I also use LittleSnitch, and it fails to detect outbound connections from the Finder. Why is this? Is there some sort of "Apple rootkit" that i'm not aware of?

  • SEO & Ajax

    - by cloudhead
I'm experimenting with building sites dynamically on the client side, through javascript + a json content server, the js retrieves the content, and builds the page client-side. Now, the content won't be indexed by google this way, is there a work around for this? like having a crawler version and a user version? Or having some sort of static archives? Has anyone done this already?

  • Grails Navigation with Dynamic Values

    - by TripWired
I'm using the grails navigation plugin and one of the things i want to do is have the menu item have a dynamic number in it for example static navigation = [ group:'tabs', order:7, title:'Mail', action:'index', subItems: [ [action:'pending', order:1, title:"Pending"], [action:'active', order:10, title:'Active'], [action:'completed', order:11, title:'Completed'] ] ] So i want to figure out a way to make the title Mail(3) or Mail(2) based on the amount of messages a user has. I know this will have to be set in the method or by a service of some sort i'm just not sure how to get it to update.

  • Number of different elements in an array.

    - by AB
Is it possible to compute the number of different elements in an array in linear time and constant space? Let us say it's an array of long integers, and you can not allocate an array of length sizeof(long). P.S. Not homework, just curious. I've got a book that sort of implies that it is possible.

  • How to reverse items in WPF Datagrid?

    - by irf1x
If i have DataGrid which looks like: Col 1 Col 2 ------- ------- 1 a 2 b 3 c ... ... n n Can the order be reversed easily without sorting? So that n is first, and 1 is last. I have custom sort implemented from this article, but sorting the same column twice in a row calls sorting function twice (which is slow), so just reversing the order should be faster and have the same effect.

  • Using GData and the Google Analytics on Android

    - by Luke Lowrey
I am wondering what my options are for using GData and specifically the analytics api on android to build a small widget. After searching around for a while I couldnt come up with any libraries with decent examples. Are there any dedicated libraries with some decent examples / doco to do this sort of thing? I would like to target 1.6 but if the are 2.0 only I guess that is fine too.

  • sorting in python

    - by tipu
I have a hashmap like so: results[tweet_id] = {"score" : float(dot(query, doc) / (norm(query) * norm(doc))), "tweet" : tweet} What I'd like to do is to sort results by the innser "score" key. I don't know how possible this is, I saw many sorting tutorials but they were for simple (not nested) data structures.
