  • Web App vs Portal Platform - convincing the customer

    We're evaluating a set of requirements for a customer who wants Liferay which mainly has AAA and Web CMS requirements, and allowing user to upload their own content. Also all inetgration is via web services. However there is no need for other features such as actual "portlets", i18n, mashups, skins, themes, tagging, social presence, no collaboration etc So we feel we can do this as a standard JEE web app and not use Liferay (or any other portal product) since these are overheads we dont need. The customer feels the Web CMS requirements + user upload justify the "portal" product. Can anyone help me with some points to convince the customer? Assuming our point of view is right.

  • SEO Benefits of adding a Tumblr feed to site

    A client of ours has a CMS driven Blog in his hotel site - he would like to use the blog to add depth top his site and add seo benefits relating to the blogs content. The current blog is a basic header / text field and doesn't contain any tagging / meta features. Unfortunately we dont have a .net developer in our team to alter the existing blog and add meta / tagging and there isn't budget to hire one - so I considered using a Tumblr blog - setting it up externally - giving it a blog.hotelname.com address and feeding it into the existing page via tumblrs js - which basically does a document.write into the page - which we can style. I understand from a previous post (Poor CMS blog vs Tumblr embed as a general rule most search engines ignore JS created content - but will the above approach act as an improvement on the existing system for now - as the blog will be setup externally with its own url and also feed into the existing site?     We're implementing an CMS based on ASP.NET MVC. Now, any designer should be able to provide themes for this CMS. But to write a theme, they need to be able to modify the generated HTML, thus the concept of View. In other words, they should be capable to either modify current views, or create new views from scratch, to fit their requirements. However, now we're not sure that we're taking the right path. Should a web designer (HTML, CSS, JavaScript + Photoshop) really know about server-side platforms like Razor or PHP, or classic ASP, or anything else?

  • Google Site Search (commercial) not indexing files in sitemap

    I have a client for whom we have purchased Google Site Search. It works well for HTML pages served by the CMS, but files aren't being reliably indexed. I wrote a script to generate an XML feed (sitemap) of all the files in the CMS which I've plugged in to Google Webmaster Tools for the site. It says that for that sitemap 923 URLs have been submitted, but only 26 have been indexed. The client relies heavily on searching within files, which is why we decided to use Google search, so this is a bit of a problem. Many of the files aren't linked to from any page on the site, as they are old and therefore don't merit having a page of their own. But they still need to be accessible through search for archiving purposes. The file archive xml can be found at www.sniffer.org.uk/file-archive and the standard xml sitemap (of pages) can be found at www.sniffer.org.uk/sitemap.xml. Any thought would be much appreciated!

  • Text not Being Placed Correctly In the Center

    This is another noobish mistake from me but I've placed some text in my page but after adding some padding to my div tag it's impossible for me to place my Text in the vertical center.     For using my Debian VPS for multiple domains , I did such actions: removed the default one from sites-enabled/ and sites-available/ (config and the symbolic link) and I added this under sites-available/www.mysite.com : <VirtualHost MYIP:80> ServerName mysite.com ServerAlias www.mysite.com Alias /media/ /home/myuser/mysite/media/ Alias /admin_media/ /home/myuser/django/Django-1.2/django/contrib/admin/media/ WSGIScriptAlias / /home/myuser/mysite/wsgi.py ErrorLog /home/myuser/mysite/logs/error.log CustomLog /home/myuser/mysite/logs/access.log combined </VirtualHost> And I have changed my ports.conf to: NameVirtualHost MYIP:80 Listen 80 <IfModule mod_ssl.c> # SSL name based virtual hosts are not yet supported, therefore no # NameVirtualHost statement here Listen 443 </IfModule> Lastly I enabled the new domain via the command: a2ensite www.mysite.com After restart I get this error: myuser:~# /etc/init.d/apache2 restart Restarting web server: apache2apache2: Syntax error on line 281 of /etc/apache2/apache2.conf: Syntax error on line 1 of /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/www.birertek.com: /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/www.birertek.com:1: <VirtualHost> was not closed. failed!   • Automatically Kill/Restart Process(es) When Memory is Critically Low

    I have a Debian Wheezy VPS box where am running a couple of Django apps in production. Ideally, would have tried addressed my current memory footprint issues by optimizing the apps, adding more RAM or augmenting with Swap. But the problem is that I doubt there's much memory optimization I'd milk from optimizing the Django apps (the stack being open-source and robust), and adding RAM is a cost constraint for me (this is a remote VPS), also, the host doesn't offer options to use Swap! So, in the meantime (as I wait to secure more resources to afford more RAM), I wish to mitigate the scenarios where the server runs out memory so that I just have to request a VPS restart (as in, at that point, I can't even SSH into the box!). So, what I would love in a solution is the ability to detect when a process (or generally, total system memory usage) exceeds a certain critical amount (for now, example the FREE RAM falls to say 10%) - which I've noticed occurs after the VPS's been up for long, and when also traffic is suddenly much to some of the heavy apps (most are just staging apps anyway). So, I wish to be able to kill/restart the offending process(es) - most likely Apache. Which solution when done manually in these situations has restored sane memory usage levels - a hint that possibly one or more of the Django apps has a memory leak? In brief: Monitor overall system RAM usage When FREE RAM falls below a given critical threshold (say below 10%), kill/restart the offending process(es) - or simpler, if we assume from my current log analysis (using linux-dash) that Apache is often the offender, then kill/restart it. Rinse and repeat...

    I have an intermittent problem, and I'm not sure where to start trying to troubleshoot it. In our dev environment, we have two visible IP addresses on load balancers, one to the front-end, and one to a number of back-end service machines. The front-end is configured to take a wildcard DNS name to support generic "portals." dev.example.com A 10.1.1.1 *.dev.example.com CNAME dev.example.com The back-end servers are all specific names within the same space: core.dev.example.com A 10.1.1.2 cms.dev.example.com CNAME core.dev.example.com search.dev.example.com CNAME core.dev.example.com Here's the problem. Periodically a developer or a program trying to reach, say, cms.dev.example.com will get a result that points to the front-end, instead of the back-end load balancer: cms.dev.example.com is an alias to core.dev.example.com core.dev.example.com is an alias to dev.example.com (WRONG!) dev.example.com 10.1.1.1 The developers are all on Mac OS X machines, though I've seen the problem occur on an Ubuntu machine as well, using a local cloud host DNS resolver. Sometimes the developer is using a VPN, which directs the DNS to its own resolver, and sometimes he's on the local net using a DNS resolver assigned by the NAT router. Sometimes clearing the Mac OS X DNS cache, logging into the VPN, then logging out of the VPN, will make the problem go away. The origin authoritative server is on zerigo, and a dig directly to their name servers always seems to give the correct answer. The published DNS cache time for these records is 15 minutes, but the problem has been intermittent for about a week. Any troubleshooting suggestions?

  • Setting the default permissions for files uploaded via FTP to a directory

    Disclaimer: I'm just a web designer/coder, and server admin stuff is my weakest point of them all. So be easy on me (and very specific). I'm using a simple CMS (Unify) on a site, where part of the functionality is that the client can upload files to a specified directory (using FTP). The permissions for the upload directory are set to 755. But when files are uploaded through the interface, they are uploaded with permissions set to 640 (instead of 644), so site visitors cannot acces the files. When I emailed the CMS's support about this, they told me that it was a server setting, and I need to make sure that files uploaded through FTP are set to 644. Makes perfect sense, but I have no idea how to do this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. This site is a shared site hosted by Network Solutions (Unix), so my access options are limited. I can edit .htaccess files, and php.ini, but that's about all I have access to. It appears I can't even log on via shell. ETA: 11/11/2010 Thanks all. I was able to work around this problem by setting up the CMS's settings in a different way. I'd be interested in following up on Nick O'Niel's suggestions, because I think he's on the right track, but unfortunately I can't access the necessary files on this particular server. So, anyway, I'm leaving this open, since the original questions isn't exactly resolved. Unfortunately, I probably can't put a correct answer to the test, since the shared server in question has nearly all of its config files tightly locked down.

I do have an index.html in /var/www (permissions:777 and ownership www-data:www-data), and i have also verified that a symlink was created for site2.com.conf in /etc/apache2/sites-enabled. Say I have 2 domains: * www.domain1.com * www.domein2.com I want both to point to the same index.php file (C:/cms/index.php). Now the hard part ... I want directories or certain file types to point to a diffirent path for each domain. Example: * www.domain1.com/layout -> C:/store/www.domain1.com/layout * www.domain2.com/layout -> C:/store/www.domain2.com/layout * www.domain1.com/image.png -> C:/store/www.domain1.com/image.png * www.domain2.com/image.png -> C:/store/www.domain2.com/image.png However the admin directory should point to the same path again for all sites * www.domain1.com/admin -> C:/cms/admin * www.domain2.com/admin -> C:/cms/admin Is there a way to achieve this kind of behaviour in apache 2.2 without having to create a virtualhost entry for each new domain?

    Hi folks, One of the ad agencies I code for had me set up an alternate scrolling solution because you know how designers hate things that just work but aren't beautiful. So, this is married in places to their CMS. What I have not been able to sort yet is how to hide the scrolling UI when overflow:auto is not triggered by the CMS content. Any ideas? TIA JG
