• Is this over-abstraction? (And is there a name for it?)

  I work on a large Django application that uses CouchDB as a database and couchdbkit for mapping CouchDB documents to objects in Python, similar to Django's default ORM. It has dozens of model classes and a hundred or two CouchDB views. The application allows users to register a "domain", which gives them a unique URL containing the domain name that gives them access to a project whose data has no overlap with the data of other domains. Each document that is part of a domain has its domain property set to that domain's name. As far as relationships between the documents go, all domains are effectively mutually exclusive subsets of the data, except for a few edge cases (some users can be members of more than one domain, and there are some administrative reports that include all domains, etc.). The code is full of explicit references to the domain name, and I'm wondering if it would be worth the added complexity to abstract this out. I'd also like to know if there's a name for the sort of bound property approach I'm taking here. I tested in both FF and Chrome with flash v. • Issues with cross-domain uploading

  I'm using a django plugin called django-filebrowser which utilizes uploadify. The issue I'm having is that I'm hosting uploadify.swf on a remote static media server, whereas my admin area is on my django server. At first, the browse button wouldn't invoke my browser's upload. I fixed this by modifying the sameScriptAccess to always instead of sameDomain. Now the progress bar doesn't move at all, I probably have to enable some server setting for cross domain file uploading, or most likely actually host a separate upload script on my media server. • Sharing session state between 2 ASP.NET applications using SQL Server

  Hi I'm working on a site that has a requirement to share session between a cms application and an online store application on the same domain eg. mydomain.com and store.mydomain.com I've made some progress with it and it works on my local build between localhost/cms and localhost/store Basically I have done what is suggested in this article http://blogs.msdn.com/toddca/archive/2007/01/25/sharing-asp-net-session-state-across-applications.aspx and hacked the TempGetAppID Stored Procedure to return the same application id (1). This appears to work as it creates sessions with ids like 'abv5d2urx1asscfwuzw3wp4500000001', which is what I'd expect. My issue is that when I deploy it to our testing environment, it creates a new session when I navigate between the 2 sites. So when I start a session on the cms site, if I navigate to the store, it creates a new session. These are set up as 2 different websites in IIS7. In the web.config files for both sites, the and elements are both the same and are as follows (minus sensitive information) Has anyone got an ideas why this might not be working? I am sharing Forms Authentication across the 2 sites and that works fine. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated! Many thanks Dave

  Hi everyone, I already have two rewrite rules that work correctly for now but some more code has to be added to work perfectly. I have a website hosted at mydomain.com and all subdom.mydomain.com are rewrited to mydomain.com/subs/subdom . My CMS has to handle the request if the file being reached does not exist, the rewrite is done like so: RewriteCond $1 !^subs/ RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^([^.]+)\.mydomain\.com$ RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule ^(.*)$ subs/%1/index.php?page=$1 [L] My CMS handles the next part of the parsing as usual. The problem is if a file really exists, I need to link to it without passing through my CMS, I managed to do it like this: RewriteCond $1 !^subs/ RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^([^.]+)\.mydomain\.com$ RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -f [OR] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -d RewriteRule ^(.*)$ subs/%1/$1 [L] So far it seems to work like a charm. Now I am being picky and I need to have default files that are stored in subs/default/. If the file exists in the subdomain folder, we should grab this one but if not, we need to get the file from the default subdomain. And if the file does not exist anywhere, we should be using the 404 page from the current subdomain unless there is none. I hope it describes well enough. Thank you for your time!

• How to speed up an already cached pip install?

  I frequently have to re-create virtual environments from a requirements.txt and I am already using $PIP_DOWNLOAD_CACHE. It still takes a lot of time and I noticed the following: Pip spends a lot of time between the following two lines: Downloading/unpacking SomePackage==1.4 (from -r requirements.txt (line 2)) Using download cache from $HOME/.pip_download_cache/cached_package.tar.gz Like ~20 seconds on average to decide it's going to use the cached package, then the install is fast. This is a lot of time when you have to install dozens of packages (actually enough to write this question). What is going on in the background? Are they some sort of integrity checks against the online package? Is there a way to speed this up? edit: Looking at: time pip install -v Django==1.4 I get: real 1m16.120s user 0m4.312s sys 0m1.280s The full output is here http://pastebin.com/e4Q2B5BA. Looks like pip is spending his time looking for a valid download link while it already has a valid cache of http://pypi.python.org/packages/source/D/Django/Django-1.4.tar.gz. Is there a way to look for the cache first and stop there if versions match?

• RewriteCond and RewriteRule newbie

  I'm taking over a website for a client that is running on a custom built CMS (that I didn't write). I don't mess with .htaccess files usually because a lot of the hosting I do is on IIS, or I used WordPress as a CMS and don't have to worry about messing with the .htaccess file. Here's the contents of the file: RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteRule ^(.*)$ framework.php?%{QUERY_STRING}&resource=$1& [L] I get what it's doing (sending all requests through the framework.php file). The client wants a WordPress blog added to their site. I'm placing it in a /blog/ folder. The problem is that because of the rewrite rules and conditions in the .htaccess file whenever I try to go /blog/ the other CMS freaks out because it doesn't like me trying to go there. My question is how do I write a rule/cond that tells apache to send all requests made to the /blog/ folder to the /blog/ folder, but keep all other requests piped through the framework.php file like it is now? Any help is appreciated, thanks!

• Complex sorting on MySQL database

  I'm facing the following situation. We've got an CMS with an entity with translations. These translations are stored in a different table with a one-to-many relationship. For example newsarticles and newsarticle_translations. The amount of available languages is dynamically determined by the same CMS. When entering a new newsarticle the editor is required to enter at least one translation, which one of the available languages he chooses is up to him. In the newsarticle overview in our CMS we would like to show a column with the (translated) article title, but since none of the languages are mandatory (one of them is mandatory but i don't know which one) i don't really know how to construct my mysql query to select a title for each newsarticle, regardless of the entered language. And to make it all a little harder, our manager asked for the possibilty to also be able to sort on title, so fetching the translations in a separate query is ruled out as far as i know. Anyone has an idea on how to solve this in the most efficient way? • OSX: Python packages fail to install, error message "/usr/local/bin: File Exists"

  I keep trying to install django and other python packages, and I keep getting the exact same error message: Installing django-admin.py script to /usr/local/bin error: /usr/local/bin: File exists So I look to make sure that my /usr/local folder is okay. At first glance it appears okay, until I try cd-ing into my bin. It says it can't because it's not a directory. • How to remove package from apt-get autoremove "queue"

  I just installed Calibre for ebook management via apt-get on Ubuntu 10.04, however I found out that it's one major version behind the current release, so I decided to reinstall it directly from sources. When I uninstalled the packaged version, apt added bunch of dependencies to the autoremove queue, and as I installed newer version of Calibre from sources, it has no knowledge of it being dependent on those packages. Now I basically have all libraries that I want, but they are still in the autoremove queue. • Can I set up a 'Deny from x' that overrides other confs for debugging?

  I'm currently working on developing/deploying a Django application on Apache and am often fiddling with the debug settings which alter how Django accepts connections, ignoring or using ALLOWED_HOSTS. If DEBUG is False, it uses them, which is handy to keep up some walls around my construction site. However, the useful info it spits out when True is quite nice. I'm currently just using an SSH tunnel and just allowing localhost when DEBUG is False, but how can I keep everyone out without relying on the aforementioned ALLOWED_HOSTS? Editing the httpd.conf file which is in source control is a bit irritating; I've accidentally committed a few botched configs.

• Server Performance

  We have a dedicated server that we use to stage websites (our test server). The performance of the server has become really bad and we regularly have to restart it. When performance is poor I have checked task manager for the processes and memory but everything looks OK. We use a content management system and it is always when using the admin section of this CMS that we notice the performance degrade which makes me think it may have something to do with DB calls the CMS is making. Does this sound viable? Any other sggestions of how I can go about testing this? Thanks in advance...

  Hello At one hosting company, they used to run python projects with fcgi. They had set it up so that when i changed django.fcgi file, which put django & my project on pythonpath, my project code was instantly recompiled. Because of that a friend set up hosting for our shared project in his server using fastcgi. It has been set up and the python scripts execute as they should, but what we do not know is, how to set it up so that my project would be recompiled when my setup file has been changed. Alan

• How to rewrite to a virtual directory with a different application

  Hi, I have a CMS application that manages multiple websites, today whenever i change the codebehind of one of these websites - i have to rebuild the dll for all websites, deploy it - this disconnects all current sessions and is really bad. The iis is configured to listen to all domain requests, if the request is to one of the websites' domain , the application rewrites it, or example, if someone requests for www.example.com, and example.com is configured in the application to be website 12, it is rewritten to www.example.com/websites/12/default.aspx. This is done for all websites. We want to seperate the dlls of the websites from each other, and from the main CMS, we have a virtual directory to each websites, but when trying to rewrite to it, we discover that IIS support this (we get an "Could not load type '_12._Default'". error). How can we perform this rewrite so it does rewrite to virtual directories, or if anyone has any other solution for the initial dll seperation problem. Thanks in advance

• Apache won't follow Symlink

  I have a LAMP server (Ubuntu 12.10) setup on my development machine. It is a T60 modified with an SSD. The server base is in /var/www. Apache has the following config: DocumentRoot /var/www <Directory /> Options FollowSymLinks AllowOverride None </Directory> <Directory /var/www/> Options Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews SymLinksIfOwnerMatch AllowOverride all Order allow,deny allow from all </Directory> I'm currently developing a SilverStripe CMS featured site. The folder for the server is /var/www/sfk/. The framework and all cms relavant features are in their respective folders. The only folder that need to be modified would be the /var/www/sfk/mysite folder. Because of that I want to keep the mysite folder under my home directory and symlink it into the server folder.
