    can someone please explain to me why having a doctype of <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN"> and <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN"> render the following block differently under firefox? <table style="border-collapse:collapse; margin:0; padding:0;"> <tr> <td style="border:1px solid red; margin:0; padding:0;"><img src="http://images.smh.com.au/2010/06/01/1533814/th_park-90x60.jpg" style="border:none; padding:0; margin:0;" /></td> </tr> </table> using 'Transitional', there is no white space below the image, using 'Strict' there is! 2nd question, using strict, is it at all possible to remove this whitespace?

    I have been given a task to: Develop a program where a child will be presented with picture of a fruit (one of five possible fruit) on the screen at the click of a start button. The child will then try to recognise the fruit and write its name in a specified place on the screen. On the click of a check button the name of the fruit written by the child will be checked by your program and if correct will reward the child with a suitable message. If the name presented by the child is not correct, a suitable message should be presented on a red background with the correct name of the fruit included in the message. so far I have managed to create a form with 5 different fruit pictures and a text box below them. a button at the bottom of the form then checks the results and presents a message box to tell them if they have passed or failed.   • What is it in the CSS/DOM that prevents an input box with display: block from expanding to the size of its container

That is to say, why doesn't the input box expand to fit its container like other block elements with width: auto; do? I tried checking the "User Agent CSS" in Firebug to see if I could come up with something there. No luck. I couldn't find any specific differences in CSS that I could specifically link to the input box behaving differently from the regular div.filler. Besides curiousity, I'd like to know why this is to get to the bottom of it to figure out a way to set width once and forget it. My current practice of explicitly setting the width of both input and its containing block element seems redundant and less than modular. While I'm familiar with the technique of wrapping the input element in a div then assigning to the input element negative margins, this seems quite undesirable.

  • Add class to textbox when invalid, using .Net Validators

    I'm working on a multipage form in .Net using AJAX (UpdatePanels). I am stuck right now trying to get a class added to the textbox that is invalid to basically highlight it red. For some reason this code does not ever fire in Firefox. I've looked up the DOMAttrModified event and it sounds like this should work in Firefox, hence it being in the code. I must be missing something though because it does not work. I'm open to other solutions for what I am trying to accomplish here if anyone has something good. Basically the form is 3 pages right now. Page 1 has a variable number of fields that require validation. It could be 5, or 13 fields, based on a checkbox. Page 2 has another set of fields that need to be validated separately. Obviously when I am on page 1 it should not try to validate page 2, and vice versa. Pleas help with either some help to fix the code I have, or an alternative.

  • Glitch when moving camera in OpenGL

    I am writing a tile-based game engine for the iPhone and it works in general apart from the following glitch. Basically, the camera will always keep the player in the centre of the screen, and it moves to follow the player correctly and draws everything correctly when stationary. However whilst the player is moving, the tiles of the surface the player is walking on glitch as shown: Compared to the stationary (correct): Does anyone have any idea why this could be? Thanks for the responses so far. Floating point error was my first thought also and I tried slightly increasing the size of the tiles but this did not help. Changing glClearColor to red still leaves black gaps so maybe it isn't floating point error. Since the tiles in general will use different textures, I don't know if vertex arrays can be used (I always thought that the same texture had to be applied to everything in the array, correct me if I'm wrong), and I don't think VBO is available in OpenGL ES. Setting the filtering to nearest neighbour improved things but the glitch still happens every ten frames or so, and the pixelly result means that this solution is not viable anyway. The main difference between what I'm doing now and what I've done in the past is that this time I am moving the camera rather than the stationary objects in the world (i.e. the tiles, the player is still being moved).   • How to visually reject user input in a table?

    In the programming of a table-based application module (i.e. the user mostly enters tabular data in an already laid-out table), how would you reject user input for a given cell? The scenario is: the user edits the cell, enters something (text, picture, ...) and you want them to notice when they finish editing (hitting enter, for example) that their entry is not valid for your given "format" (in the wider meaning: it can be that they entered a string instead of a number, that their entry is too long, too short, they include a picture while it's not acceptable, ...). I can see two different things happening: You can rather easily fit their entry into your format, and you do so, but you want them to notice it so they can change if your guess is not good enough (example: they entered "15.47" in a field that needs to be an integer, so your program makes it "15") You cannot guess what to do with their entry, and want to inform them that it's not valid. My question specifically is: what visual display can you offer to inform the user that his input is invalid? Is it preferable to refuse to leave the editing mode, or not? The two things I can imagine are: using colors (red background if invalid, yellow background for my case 1 above) when you reject an input, do something like Apple does for password entry of user accounts: you make the cell "shaking" (i.e. oscillating left and right) for one second, and keep the focus/editing in their so they don't loose what they've typed. Let's hear your suggestions. PS: This question is, at least in my thought process, somehow a continuation and a specialization of my previous question on getting users to read error messages. PPS: Made this community wiki, was that the right thing to do on this kind of question or not?

    I am writing an app that is simulating RobotArm movement. What I want to achieve, and where I have couple of problems is moving a Point on arc (180degree) that is arm range of movement. I am moving an arm by grabbing with mouse end of arm (Elbow, the Point I was talking about), robot can have multiple arms with diffrent arm lenghts. If u can help me with this part, I'd be grateful.   • Why might ASP.NET be putting JavaScript in HTML Comment blocks, not CDATA?

    We have an ASP.NET 2.0 WebForms app that uses MS Ajax 1.0. It's working fine on all our environments (dev, test, IE6 VMs etc.). However, at the customer site the client side validation is not happening. We're currently trying to eliminate all the various factors and along the way we asked them to get their page source and send it to us, and we found something interesting. In our environment, our page has ASP.NET javascript in CDATA blocks: <script type="text/javascript"> //<![CDATA[ . . . //]]> </script> In their environment, the same code looks like this: <script type="text/javascript"> <!-- . . . //--> </script> This may be a red herring, but I'd like to eliminate it as the cause of the validation issues. Does anyone know whether specific configurations/patches/versions of ASP.NET will make it do this?

  • Why NOT use POST method here?

    I have a classifieds website. In the main page (index) I have several form fields which the user may or may not fill in, in order to specify a detailed search of classifieds. Ex: Category: Cars Price from: 3000 Price to: 10000 Color: Red Area: California The forms' action is set to a php page: <form action='query_sql.php' method='post'> In query_sql.php I fetch the variables like this: category=$_POST['category']; etc etc... Then query MySql: $query="SELECT........WHERE category='$category' etc etc.... $results = mysql_query($query); Then I simply display the results of the query to the user by creating a table which is filled in dynamically depending on the results set. However, according to an answer by Col. Shrapnel in my previous Q I shouldn't use POST here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3004754/how-to-hide-url-from-users-when-submitting-this-form The reason I use post is simply to hide the "one-page-word-document" long URL in the browsers adress bar. I am very confused, is it okay to use POST or not? It is working fine both when I use GET or POST now... And it is already on a production server... Btw, in the linked question, I wasn't referring to make URL invisible (or hide it) I just wanted it too look better (which I have accomplished with mod_rewrite).   • Weird problem with PHP mail() under Linux.

    This is the case when it "works on my machine". Except that my machine is Windows, and the target is some sort of Linux. The idea is that the mail() function puts a newline between the MIME-Version and Content-Type headers, thus breaking the whole thing.   • Grails - Removing an item from a hasMany association List on data bind?

    Grails offers the ability to automatically create and bind domain objects to a hasMany List, as described in the grails user guide. So, for example, if my domain object "Author" has a List of many "Book" objects, I could create and bind these using the following markup (from the user guide): <g:textField name="books[0].title" value="the Stand" /> <g:textField name="books[1].title" value="the Shining" /> <g:textField name="books[2].title" value="Red Madder" /> In this case, if any of the books specified don't already exist, Grails will create them and set their titles appropriately. If there are already books in the specified indices, their titles will be updated and they will be saved. My question is: is there some easy way to tell Grails to remove one of those books from the 'books' association on data bind? The most obvious way to do this would be to omit the form element that corresponds to the domain instance you want to delete; unfortunately, this does not work, as per the user guide: Then Grails will automatically create a new instance for you at the defined position. If you "skipped" a few elements in the middle ... Then Grails will automatically create instances in between. I realize that a specific solution could be engineered as part of a command object, or as part of a particular controller- however, the need for this functionality appears repeatedly throughout my application, across multiple domain objects and for associations of many different types of objects. A general solution, therefore, would be ideal. Does anyone know if there is something like this included in Grails?

  • How can I change the tags/css class of some dynamic text based on output from a helper?

    I have a repeated line which outputs something like: Call John Jones in -3 days (status) I have a helper called show_status(contact,email) which will output whether that particular email had been sent to that particular contact. If it is "sent," then that entire line should show up as "strike out." Similarly, if the number of days is -3 (<0), the line should be formatted in red. Here's my hack, but there must be a cleaner way to put the logic into the controller?   • using the :sass filter with :css

    We are currently making a widget that requires some default declared styles along with it(widget html is included by javasacript, along with the default css in style tags) but the problem is i can't "chain" haml filters. What I'm trying to do is to add an internal stylesheet along with the widget like so: <style type="text/css"> p {color: #f00;} </style> <div id="widget-goes-here"> <p>etc</p> </div> We are using haml so I tried doing it with the sass filter: :sass p :color #f00 #widget-goes-here %p etc sadly, it just generated a div with a p plus the generated css code literally on top: p {color: #f00;} paragraph here I then tried using the :css filter of haml to enclose the thing in style tags(theoretically it should then turn the paragraph text color to red): :css :sass p :color #f00 #widget-goes-here %p etc But this also failed, it did generated style tags but then it just enclosed the words :sass p :color #f00 in it(it didn't parse the sass code) We did change it to :css p {color: #f00} and it worked out fine, but I still plan on doing the styling in sass(instead of plain old css) is there a way to do this?

  • java: libraries for immutable functional-style data structures

    This is very similar to another question (Functional Data Structures in Java) but the answers there are not particularly useful. I need to use immutable versions of the standard Java collections (e.g. HashMap / TreeMap / ArrayList / LinkedList / HashSet / TreeSet). By "immutable" I mean immutable in the functional sense (e.g. purely functional data structures), where updating operations on the data structure do not change the original data, but instead return a new instance of the same kind of data structure. Also typically new and old instances of the data structure will share immutable data to be efficient in time and space. From what I can tell my options include: Functional Java Scala Clojure but I'm not sure whether any of these are particularly appealing to me. I have a few requirements/desirements: the collections in question should be usable directly in Java (with the appropriate libraries in the classpath). FJ would work for me; I'm not sure if I can use Scala's or Clojure's data structures in Java w/o having to use the compilers/interpreters from those languages and w/o having to write Scala or Clojure code. Core operations on lists/maps/sets should be possible w/o having to create function objects with confusing syntaxes (FJ looks slightly iffy) They should be efficient in time and space. I'm looking for a library which ideally has done some performance testing. FJ's TreeMap is based on a red-black tree, not sure how that rates. Documentation / tutorials should be good enough so someone can get started quickly using the data structures. FJ fails on that front. Any suggestions?

    I'm trying to change the background colour of the <body> depending on what tab specific is active. When a tab is active, a class called 'st_view_active' is added onto the tab content. In the tab content I add a hidden div with the hex code of what my body background colour should be when that tab is active, my jQuery code looks like this: $(document).ready(function() { $(function(){ $('body').css('backgroundColor',$('.st_view_active').find('.background').text()); }); }); And my html code when the tab is active is following: <div class="tab-6 st_view st_view_active" > <div style="display:none" class="background">yellow</div> <div class="st_view_inner"> tab 6 </div> </div> So when tab6 is active the background of the body should be yellow.   • How to make use of Grails Dependencies in your IDE

    Hi All, So I finally got my dependencies working with Grails. Now, how can my IDE, eg IntelliJ or Eclipse, take advantage of it? Or do I really have to manually manage what classes my IDE knows about at "development time"? If the BuildConfig.groovy script is setup right (see here), you will be able to code away with vi or your favorite editor without any troubles, then run grails compile which will resolve and download the dependencies into the Ivy cache and off you go... If, however, you are using an IDE like Eclipse or IntelliJ, you will need the dependencies at hand while coding. Obviously - as these animals will need them for the "real time" error detection/compilation process. Now, while it is certainly possible to code with all the classes shining up in bright red all over the place that are unknown to your IDE, it is certainly not much fun... The Maven support or whatever it is officially called lives happily with the pom file, no extra "jar directory" pointers needed, at least in IntelliJ. I would like to be able to do the same with Grails dependencies. Currently I am defining them in the BuildConfig.groovy and additionally I copy/paste the current jars around on my local disk and let the IDE point to it. Not very satisfactory, as I am working in a highly volatile project module environment with respect to code change. And this situation ports me directly into "jar hell", as my "develop- and build-dependencies" easily get out of sync and I have to manage manually, that is, with my brain... So I used the following: CREATE TABLE `test`.`fruit` ( `id` INT(10) UNSIGNED NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT, `parent` INT(10) UNSIGNED, `name` VARCHAR(45) NOT NULL, PRIMARY KEY (`id`), CONSTRAINT `fk_parent` FOREIGN KEY (`parent`) REFERENCES `fruit` (`id`) ON UPDATE CASCADE ON DELETE RESTRICT ) ENGINE = InnoDB; From what I understand, this should fit my requirements. (And parent must default to null to allow insertions, correct?) The problem is, if I change the id of a record, it will not cascade: Cannot delete or update a parent row: a foreign key constraint fails (`test`.`fruit`, CONSTRAINT `fk_parent` FOREIGN KEY (`parent`) REFERENCES `fruit` (`id`) ON UPDATE CASCADE) What am I missing? Feel free to correct me if my terminology is screwed up... I'm new to constraints.

  • Compiling a C++ application on Windows 7, but execute it on Win2003 Server

    I have a C++ application (quite complex, multiple projects) in Visual Studio 2008, that produces a single dll. Recently I switched to Windows 7, but had previously been compiling under Windows XP. Suddenly the dll in question cannot be loaded by another application, i.e. on a machine running Windows 2003 Server. I've been trying various things: I've installed the VC9.0 redistributable package on the server Also copied various .dll's from that package to the application folder The project is of course compiled in release mode When I run depends.exe on the client machine, I do get the following error: "Error: The Side-by-Side configuration information for "my_dll.dll" contains errors. This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem (14001). Warning: At least one module has an unresolved import due to a missing export function in a delay-load dependent module." and the icon for shlwapi.dll has a red overlay icon. This didn't happen when I was compiling under WinXP, so I'm guessing that there really is no problem with the .dll's on the client machine, but somewhere there is a reference to that particular version of some dll. Does anyone know what would be the best way to resolve this? Regards, Daníel

    Hi, I'm new to GWT; I'm building a small sample app. I have several CSS files. I'm able to successfully use the ClientBundle and CssResource to assign styles to the elements defined in my UiBinder script. Now I'd like to take it one step further and introduce CSS constants using @def css-rule. The @def works great when I define a constant and use it in the same CSS file. However I cannot use it in another CSS file. When I try to use the @eval rule to evaluate an existing constant the compiler throws an execption: "cannot make a static reference to the non-static method ".     i have a database in MySql that has a name column in it which contains several words(description). I am connected to database with java through eclipse.   • OpenCV. cvFnName() works, but cv::FunName() doesn't work

    I'm using OpenCV to write a plugin for a simulator. I've made an OpenCV project (single - not a plugin) and it works fine. When I added OpenCV libs to the plugin project, I added all libs required. Visual Studio 2010 doesn't highlight any code line with red. All looks fine and compiles fine. But in execution, the program halts with a Runtime Error on any cv::function. For example: cv::imread, or cv::imwrite. But if I replace them with cvLoadImage() and cvSaveImage(), it works fine. Why does this happen? I don't want to rewrite the whole script in old-api-style (cvFnName). It means I should change all Mat objects to IplImages, and so on. Early it displayed some Runtime Error. Now, I wanted to copy exact message and it just crashes the application (simulator, what I am pluginning). It displays window error - to kill process or no. (I can't show exact message, because I'm using russian windows now)
