  • Choosing a distributed shared memory solution

    I have a task to build a prototype for a massively scalable distributed shared memory (DSM) app. The prototype would only serve as a proof-of-concept, but I want to spend my time most effectively by picking the components which would be used in the real solution later on. The aim of this solution is to take data input from an external source, churn it and make the result available for a number of frontends. Those "frontends" would just take the data from the cache and serve it without extra processing. The amount of frontend hits on this data can literally be millions per second. The data itself is very volatile; it can (and does) change quite rapidly. However the frontends should see "old" data until the newest has been processed and cached. The processing and writing is done by a single (redundant) node while other nodes only read the data. In other words: no read-through behaviour. I was looking into solutions like memcached however this particular one doesn't fulfil all our requirements which are listed below: The solution must at least have Java client API which is reasonably well maintained as the rest of app is written in Java and we are seasoned Java developers; The solution must be totally elastic: it should be possible to add new nodes without restarting other nodes in the cluster; The solution must be able to handle failover. Yes, I realize this means some overhead, but the overall served data size isn't big (1G max) so this shouldn't be a problem. By "failover" I mean seamless execution without hardcoding/changing server IP address(es) like in memcached clients when a node goes down; Ideally it should be possible to specify the degree of data overlapping (e.g. how many copies of the same data should be stored in the DSM cluster); There is no need to permanently store all the data but there might be a need of post-processing of some of the data (e.g. serialization to the DB). Price. Obviously we prefer free/open source but we're happy to pay a reasonable amount if a solution is worth it. In any way, paid 24hr/day support contract is a must. The whole thing has to be hosted in our data centers so SaaS offerings like Amazon SimpleDB are out of scope. We would only consider this if no other options would be available. Ideally the solution would be strictly consistent (as in CAP); however, eventual consistence can be considered as an option. Thanks in advance for any ideas.

  • How to get calculated element width and height in YUI3?

    jQuery has handy .height() and .width() utilities to get calculated displayed size of a DOM element. It also has .position() to get coordinates. In YUI3 Node, I see that there are .getX(), .getY() and .getXY() utilities to get position, but I do not see anything for size (or can't look). What's a good way to get element height and width in YUI3?

  • C# XPath id() not working?

    I'm using C# and I'm stumped. Does it just not support id()? I have a large XML file, about 4-5 of them at ~400kb, so I need some speed and performance wherever I can get it. I use XmlDocument.SelectSingleNode("id('blahblahblah')") and it doesn't get the node by id. Am I going crazy or is it that C# XPath just doesn't support id()?

  • Parameters not being passed into template when using the .Net transform classes

    I am using the .Net XslCompiledTranform to run some simple XSLT (see below for a simplified example). The example XSLT is meant to do simply show the value of the parameter that is passed in to the template. The output is what I expect it to be (i.e. <result xmlns:p1="http://www.doesnotexist.com"> <valueOfParamA>valueA</valueOfParamA> </result> when I use Saxon 9.0, but when I use XslCompiledTransform (XslTransform) in .net I get <result xmlns:p1="http://www.doesnotexist.com"> <valueOfParamA></valueOfParamA> </result> The problem is that that the parameter value of paramA is not being passed into the template when I use the .Net classes. I completely stumped as to why. when I step through in Visual Studio, the debugger says that the template will be called with paramA='valueA' but when execution switches to the template the value of paramA is blank. Can anyone explain why this is happening? Is this a bug in the MS implementation or (more likely) am I doing something that is forbidden in XSLT? Any help greatly appreciated. Once I reasoned through my task and boiled it down to this, I was amused with myself. Anyway, the solution will look something like the one in this question I suppose, but I'm not a math major and my C sucks.   • Google App Engine with local Django 1.1 gets Intermittent Failures

    I'm using the Windows Launcher development environment for Google App Engine. I have downloaded Django 1.1.2 source, and un-tarrred the "django" subdirectory to live within my application directory (a peer of app.yaml) At the top of each .py source file, I do this: import settings import os os.environ["DJANGO_SETTINGS_MODULE"] = 'settings' In my file settings.py (which lives at the root of the app directory, as well), I do this: DEBUG = True TEMPLATE_DIRS = ('html') INSTALLED_APPS = ('filters') import os os.environ["DJANGO_SETTINGS_MODULE"] = 'settings' from google.appengine.dist import use_library use_library('django', '1.1') from django.template import loader Yes, this looks a bit like overkill, doesn't it? I only use django.template. I don't explicitly use any other part of django. However, intermittently I get one of two errors: 1) Django complains that DJANGO_SETTINGS_MODULE is not defined. 2) Django complains that common.html (a template I'm extending in other templates) doesn't exist. 95% of the time, these errors are not encountered, and they randomly just start happening. Once in that state, the local server seems "wedged" and re-booting it generally fixes it. What's causing this to happen, and what can I do about it? How can I even debug it? All templates live in a directory named "html" in my root directory, and "html/common.html" exists. I know the template engine finds them, because I start out with "html/edit_budget.html" which extends common.html. It looks as if the settings module somehow isn't applied (because that's what adds html to the search path for templates).

Unfortunately, TreeNode don't have properties like ExpandNodeImage, CollapseNodeImage \ TreeView can change very often, so nodes can be deleted/added.. i can delete child nodes and so on... Maybe, there is a class like ExpandAndCollapseNode ?

    I have a basic XML object that I'm working with. I can't figure out how to access the parts of it. EX:<br> <pre><code> < FacetsData> < Collection name="CDDLALL" type="Group"> < SubCollection name="CDDLALL" type="Row"> < Column name="DPDP_ID">D0230< /Column> < Column name="Count">9< /Column> < /SubCollection> < SubCollection name="CDDLALL" type="Row"> < Column name="DPDP_ID">D1110< /Column> < Column name="Count">9< /Column> < /SubCollection> < /Collection> < /FacetsData> (PS: I can't get this damn xml to format so people can read it) What I need to do is check each DPDP_ID and if its value is D0230 then I leave the Count alone, all else I change the Count to 1.   • What is a proper way to store site-level global variables in a SharePoint site?

    One thing that has driven me nuts about SharePoint2007 is the apparent inability to have defineable settings that apply specifically to a site or site collection itself, and not the content. I mean, you have some pre-defined settings like the Site Logo, the Site Name, and various other things, but there doesn't appear to be anywhere to add new kinds of settings. The application I am working on needs to be able to create multiple kinds of "project site collections" that all follow a basic template, but have certain additional settings that apply specifically to that site collection and that one alone. In addition to the standard site name we also need to define the Project Number, the Project Name, and the Client Name. And given the requests of some of our clients, we also reach a point where we have to have configurable settings that alter how some of the workflows work, like whether files are marked with Letters or Numbers. Our current solution, which I'm hesitant about, has been to store an XML file on the SharePoint server. This file contains one node for each site collection, identified by the URL of the root site. Inside the node are all of the elements that need to be defined for that site collection. When we need them, we have to access the XML file (which will always require SPSecurity.RunWithElevatedPrivileges to access files right on the server) every time to load it and retrieve the data. There are a lot of automated processes which will have to do this, and I'm hesitant about the stability of this method when we reach hundreds of sites with thousands of files running tens of thousands of workflows, all wanting to access this file. Maybe they're unfounded worries, but I'd rather worry than risk everything breaking in a couple years. I was looking into the SPWeb object and found the AllProperties hashtable. It looks like just the kind of thing which might work, but I don't know how safe it is to be modifying this. I read through both MSDN and the WSS SDK but found nothing that clarified on adding completely new properties into AllProperties. Is it safe to use AllProperties for this kind of thing? Or is there yet another feature that I am missing, which could handle the concept of global variables at the site collection or site scope?

  • Using WebSockets in a C# Web Application?

    I know its possible to use WebSockets within C# using a console application running along side the web application but Im wondering if its possible to use the requests on the C# web application to create the WebSockets. I've been looking through ASP.Net and Im starting to think it wont be possible unless I use straight up C# and create my own HTTP server and then use the same socket object to generate Web Sockets (similar to the way Node.js and Socket.IO work). Any thoughts on ways to include WebSockets on a C# web application without having multiple servers / projects?

The cardinality of the child nodes is 0..unbounded. However, Can I nest xs:choice within xs:sequence? If, where do I specify the maxOccurs="unbounded" attribute?
