  • Object Oriented Database - why most of the companies do not use them

    Hi, I am pretty new to programming(just finished University). I have been thought in the last 4 years about Object Oriented development and the numerous advantages of this approach. My question is Isn't it easier to use a pure Object Oriented database in development applications? Why Object Oriented database are not as much diffuse as relational? From my point of view makes sense to use OO database, the latter will avoid the numerous construction necessary for the mapping of complex objects on the tables.

  • `strip`ing the results of a split in python

    i'm trying to do something pretty simple: line = "name : bob" k, v = line.lower().split(':') k = k.strip() v = v.strip() is there a way to combine this into one line somehow? i found myself writing this over and over again when making parsers, and sometimes this involves way more than just two variables. i know i can use regexp, but this is simple enough to not really have to require it...

  • Cross browser issues with IE

    Im really annoyed with Internet Explorer.I designed a site using css. The really annoying part is the cross browser issues.. The site works fine in all versions of FireFox and Chrome but when it comes to internet explorer. IE5 - The complete site is messed up with the alignments IE6 - Major Alignment problems. IE7 and 8 Works pretty good. Can someone please suggest some good methods to get rid of the cross browser issues with IE??

    Whenever I try to open a project (csproj) that's downloaded from the internet, most of the times, I get the "The project type is not supported by this installation" It appears that my Visual Studio installation is not corrupted (I can pretty much do everything with it other than open these csproj files) What may be causing this?

  • 4 Minute Delay Between New User Registration and Receipt of Activation Email

    Hello, I am using a PHP/MySQL login script that sends a new user an activation email. When a new user registers, the info is put into MySQL pretty much instantly, but then it takes about 4 minutes for the activation email to arrive in the new user's inbox. It seems like sites like Facebook and Twitter can get out an activation email instantly when a new user registers. Is there anything that I could do to make the activation email that I'm using arrive instantly or really fast? Thanks in advance, John

    What if I want to do something with my formset other than immediately saving it?   • Automatically generating better views for ASP.NET MVC

    I am currently watching the 80 minute ASP.NET MVC introduction. Automatically generating views from a model is pretty neat, but it seems to me that that the automatically generated views could be much better. For a start, instead of inputing dates with text boxes, there could be a date control. Additionally, number inputs could be verified client side. There are probably other improvements that could be made as well. Is it possible to automatically generate better views?

To my understanding, cloud computing is a paradigm in which companies put up their data and applications on somebody else's machines aka 'The Cloud'. I want to know just how secure is it to put up my data on some third party machines, especially if my data contains private details.     I have a menu set up that has about 20 menu items in a circle. When you mouse over each item, a title comes up. The only problem is that because of the depth order, it's hidden behind the other menu items. Is there a way to bring this item to the front when moused over? I'm pretty actionscript illiterate so any help would be awesome.

  • Check if NSURL is Local File

    This is a pretty simple question- how can I check if a NSURL is linking to a local file? I know, RTFM, but I checked the documentation and I don't seem to see any methods related to this. The only methods I did find were -isFileReferenceURL and -isFileURL, but I think these only check if the URL directly links to a file. note: I'm making an iPhone app, so by "local file" I mean a .html file stored in the project's resources. Thanks for any help in advance.

  • Version control: delete branches after merging?

    When you branch some code, finish working with the branch, and merge it back to the trunk, what do you do with the branch? Delete it from the repository? Keep it for reference? It seems like you would keep it for reference, but I imagine the /branches directory could get pretty cluttered. (If this isn't something people generally agree on, please comment and I'll make it a community wiki.)

  • Compile/use unrar C++ source for iphone app?

    Writing an app that will include the ability to decompress zip and rar files. I think I'm OK on how to handle the .zips but .rars seem a little more trouble. I noticed that rarlabs has source available but it's C++. Is there a way to compile, wrap or otherwise use this code within an iPhone app?     I'm not big on creating GUI's, and generally my philosophy is: I don't create them, or I make them as simple as possible (and convince myself that it's better for usability :) For my current project, I'm using Qt from Python (PyQt), and I want to start adding some GUI elements without cluttering the interface. My idea is to create these elements as sort of floating-shaped-widgets that only appear when necessary; pretty much like the status bar (and find bar) in chrome. Is there any standard api that enables creating this kind of interface?
