    We are a bootstrapped web start up. We have a LAMP web application that we expect relatively low to mid traffic because users need an account to log in. Our current approach is to colocate two servers, a web and mysql database server. We are planning to use Ubuntu Server 9.04. We have shopped around for dedicated servers but the price range from $900 to $1500 per month, therefore we are exploring the colocation approach. We are considering purchasing two Mac Minis (2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 2 Gb RAM) because we are familiar with the machines are the prices are relatively inexpensive. What are the pros and cons of using these 'non-server' grade machines? We would install Ubuntu Sever and attach firewire external hard drives. Any advice on how to set up 'good-and-economic' web/database servers is welcomed.

    Java Cloud Service (JCS) provides a platform to develop and deploy business applications in the cloud. In Fusion Applications Cloud deployments customers do not have the option to deploy custom applications developed with JDeveloper to ensure the integrity and supportability of the hosted application service. To register you will need a credit card even if the credit card will not be charged. To register simply click "Try it" and choose the "Java" option. The confirmation email will contain the connection details. See this video for example of the registration. Once the request is processed you will be assigned 2 service instances; Java and Database. Applications deployed to the JCS must use Oracle Database Cloud Service as their underlying database. So when JCS instance is created a database instance is associated with it using a JDBC data source. The cloud services can be monitored and managed through the web UI. For details refer to Getting Started with Oracle Cloud. JDeveloper JDeveloper contains Cloud specific features related to e.g. connection and deployment. To use these features download the JDeveloper from JDeveloper download site by clicking the “Download JDeveloper 11.1.1.7.1 for ADF deployment on Oracle Cloud” link, this version of JDeveloper will have the JCS integration features that will be used in this article. For versions that do not include the Cloud integration features the Oracle Java Cloud Service SDK or the JCS Java Console can be used for deployment. For details on installing and configuring the JDeveloper refer to the installation guide. For details on SDK refer to Using the Command-Line Interface to Monitor Oracle Java Cloud Service and Using the Command-Line Interface to Manage Oracle Java Cloud Service. Create Application In this example the “JcsWsDemo” application created in the “Java Cloud Service Integration using Web Service Proxy” article is used as the base. Create Web Service Data Control In this example we will use a Web Service Data Control to integrate with Credit Rule Service in Fusion Applications. The data control will be used to query data from Fusion Applications using a web service call and present the data in a table. To generate the data control choose the “Model” project and navigate to "New -> All Technologies -> Business Tier -> Data Controls -> Web Service Data Control" and enter following: Name: CreditRuleServiceDC URL: https://ic-[POD].oracleoutsourcing.com/icCnSetupCreditRulesPublicService/CreditRuleService?WSDL Service: {{http://xmlns.oracle.com/apps/incentiveCompensation/cn/creditSetup/creditRule/creditRuleService/}CreditRuleService On step 2 select the “findRule” operation: Skip step 3 and on step 4 define the credentials to access the service. Do note that in this example these credentials are only used if testing locally, for JCS deployment credentials need to be manually updated on the EAR file: Click “Finish” and the proxy generation is done. Creating UI In order to use the data control we will need to populate complex objects FindCriteria and FindControl. For simplicity in this example we will create logic in a managed bean that populates the objects. Open “JcsWsDemoBean.java” and add the following logic: Map findCriteria; Map findControl; public void setFindCriteria(Map findCriteria) { this.findCriteria = findCriteria; } public Map getFindCriteria() { findCriteria = new HashMap(); findCriteria.put("fetchSize",10); findCriteria.put("fetchStart",0); return findCriteria; } public void setFindControl(Map findControl) { this.findControl = findControl; } public Map getFindControl() { findControl = new HashMap(); return findControl; } Open “JcsWsDemo.jspx”, navigate to “Data Controls -> CreditRuleServiceDC -> findRule(Object, Object) -> result” and drag and drop the “result” node into the “af:form” element in the page: On the “Edit Table Columns” remove all columns except “RuleId” and “Name”: On the “Edit Action Binding” window displayed enter reference to the java class created above by selecting “#{JcsWsDemoBean.findCriteria}”: Also define the value for the “findControl” by selecting “#{JcsWsDemoBean.findControl}”. Deploy to JCS For WS DC the authentication details need to be updated on the connection details before deploying. Open “connections.xml” by navigating “Application Resources -> Descriptors -> ADF META-INF -> connections.xml”: Change the user name and password entry from: <soap username="transportUserName" password="transportPassword" To match the access details for the target environment. Follow the same steps as documented in previous article ”Java Cloud Service ADF Web Application”. The server handles a high load of traffic very well and everything works as desired in terms of performance and load times. However we sometimes get complaints from our overseas users (US, South America) that the experience slow page loading times. What would be the best way to test the performance of a web application "as if you are on another continent"? I want to make sure that the distance between the server and the user is no problem?

  • Manage Sending 2010 Documents to the Web with Office Upload Center

    One of the main new features being touted in Office 2010 is the ability to upload documents to the Web for sharing and collaboration. Today we look at using Office Upload Center to help manage your uploaded documents. Microsoft Office Upload Center  When you upload an Office 2010 document to the web, a handy tool to manage them is the Office Upload Center. It’s a way to see what is being uploaded or what might have failed to reach the servers. It lets you know if a document failed to upload for some reason. In this case it looks like the incorrect credentials were entered when signing into Windows Live. Click on the Resolve button to get a list of actions you can take to get things corrected.   You can access the Upload Center from the icon which appears on the System Tray when uploading documents. Right-click the icon to control notifications, pause uploads, and access its settings. In the Settings section you can choose how Upload Center displays notifications, select the number of days to keep files in Cache, and delete currently cached files. If you find yourself uploading several documents to the web during the day, the Office Upload Center is a nice feature for managing them.   • How to host customer developed code server side

    I'm developing a multi-tenant web application, most likely using ASP.NET MVC5 and Web API. I have used business applications in the past where it was possible to upload custom DLL's or paste in custom code to a GUI to have custom functions run server side. These applications were self hosted and single-tenant though so the customer developed bits didn't impact other clients. I want to host the multi-tenant web application myself and allow customers to upload custom code that will run server side. This could be for things like custom web services that client side JavaScript could interact with, or it could be for automation steps that they want triggered server side asynchronously when a user takes a particular action. Additionally, I want to expose an API that allows customers' code to interact with data specific to the web application itself. Client code may need to be "wrapped" so that it has access to appropriate references - to our custom API and maybe to a white list of approved libraries. There are several issues to consider - security, performance (infinite loops, otherwise poorly written code, load balancing, etc.), receive compiled DLL's or require raw code, etc. Is there an established pattern for this sort of thing or a sample project anyone can point to? Or any general recommendations?

I have done some reading on what URLS should look like for search engine optimisation, but I am curious to know how mine would like, I need some advice. I have a tutorial website, and my categories is something like: Web Development -> Client Side -> JavaScript So if I have a tutorial called "What is JavaScript?", is it good to have a URL that looks something like: www.MyWebsite.com/web-development/client-side/javascript/what-is-javascipt Or would something like this be more appropriate: www.MyWebsite.com/tutorials/what-is-javascipt Just curious because I also read that it is wise to have keywords in your URLs.     A few months back, I was doing some recreational reading at the iOS Dev Center, and I came across a small list of guidelines for free vs. paid apps. It included guidance along these lines: How not to promote a paid version within a free version Not displaying "placeholder" buttons in a free version that "work" in a paid version I can't remember much more than that, and I cannot find it anymore on the iOS Dev Center.   • No app icons in menus

    I have enabled icons in menus, and most of them show up well (folder icons, file icons, save icons, etc.). But whenever an app tries to use an icon specific to itself, such as GIMP, it replaces that icon with the app icon, so that when I look at a menu in GIMP, I see most of the time just icons of GIMP's logo (that seems to be the only problem; the text is fine). I thought this was proper to GIMP, but I also noticed it happening on AbiWord. Thankfully, as I said, it's not for all icons. But it still bugs me. Why is it so? Here is a screenshot of a menu in GIMP: I am using Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal, with Unity desktop (the problem also occurs on the Classic desktop, if I remember correctly). EDIT: This does NOT occur on the Classic desktop; only in Unity.

SucceededCallback : This is the callback function invoked if the Web service succeeded. The Dictionary Represents a collection of keys and values Dictionary<TKey, TValue> TKey : The type of the keys in the dictionary TValue : The type of the values in the dictionary. For more information about Dictionary check this link : http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/xfhwa508(VS.80).aspx   Now we can get the value for every element because we have mapping from a set of keys to a set of values, the keys of this example is :  PlayerID ,PlayerName,PlayerPPD, this created from the original object person.    Ultimately,this Web method return the values as string, but the main idea of this method to show you how to deal with array of object and convert it to  Dictionary<string, object> object , and get the values of this Dictionary.   Hope this helps,
