    Hey, I'm wondering if there is any best practice for maintaining your source code under version control among different companies. In Open Source there is a maintainer, who receives patches, decides on them and applies them. But what about closed sourced projects where different companies get different workloads and just commit them to the trunk and branches? Is this maintainer concept applicable to a project on which multiple companies work on?

  • SQL Server Compact Edition 3.5 performance

    I am using SQL Server CE 3.5 SP1 in one of my client applications. When a user loads the program and starts using it, performance is fine. If the user lets the program sit idle for a while, it takes a considerable amount of time (10 or more seconds) for the program to respond. Every time the user asks for a new screen, a call is made to the SQL CE database to get the data for that screen. It seems like the hard drive may be going to sleep and then when the database is accessed, the hard drive has to wake back up. Is it possible to load the entire database into memory and work from that? Are there any other suggestions on how to increase performance?

For a compiled language like C, people usually give the explanation of "Code is compiled to assembly which is assembled and linked into a binary executable. The executable is then loaded into memory and the CPU interprets it." My question is how does the CPU know where to look for the next instruction to execute? Is it a memory address stored in one of the registers?

  • What are the disadvantages of self-encapsulation?

    Background Tony Hoare's billion dollar mistake was the invention of null. Subsequently, a lot of code has become riddled with null pointer exceptions (segfaults) when software developers try to use (dereference) uninitialized variables. In 1989, Wirfs-Brock and Wikerson wrote: Direct references to variables severely limit the ability of programmers to re?ne existing classes. The programming conventions described here structure the use of variables to promote reusable designs. We encourage users of all object-oriented languages to follow these conventions. Additionally, we strongly urge designers of object-oriented languages to consider the effects of unrestricted variable references on reusability. Problem A lot of software, especially in Java, but likely in C# and C++, often uses the following pattern: public class SomeClass { private String someAttribute; public SomeClass() { this.someAttribute = "Some Value"; } public void someMethod() { if( this.someAttribute.equals( "Some Value" ) ) { // do something... } } public void setAttribute( String s ) { this.someAttribute = s; } public String getAttribute() { return this.someAttribute; } } Sometimes a band-aid solution is used by checking for null throughout the code base: public void someMethod() { assert this.someAttribute != null; if( this.someAttribute.equals( "Some Value" ) ) { // do something... } } public void anotherMethod() { assert this.someAttribute != null; if( this.someAttribute.equals( "Some Default Value" ) ) { // do something... } } The band-aid does not always avoid the null pointer problem: a race condition exists. The race condition is mitigated using: public void anotherMethod() { String someAttribute = this.someAttribute; assert someAttribute != null; if( someAttribute.equals( "Some Default Value" ) ) { // do something... } } Yet that requires two statements (assignment to local copy and check for null) every time a class-scoped variable is used to ensure it is valid. Self-Encapsulation Ken Auer's Reusability Through Self-Encapsulation (Pattern Languages of Program Design, Addison Wesley, New York, pp. 505-516, 1994) advocated self-encapsulation combined with lazy initialization. The result, in Java, would resemble: public class SomeClass { private String someAttribute; public SomeClass() { setAttribute( "Some Value" ); } public void someMethod() { if( getAttribute().equals( "Some Value" ) ) { // do something... } } public void setAttribute( String s ) { this.someAttribute = s; } public String getAttribute() { String someAttribute = this.someAttribute; if( someAttribute == null ) { setAttribute( createDefaultValue() ); } return someAttribute; } protected String createDefaultValue() { return "Some Default Value"; } } All duplicate checks for null are superfluous: getAttribute() ensures the value is never null at a single location within the containing class. Efficiency arguments should be fairly moot -- modern compilers and virtual machines can inline the code when possible. As long as variables are never referenced directly, this also allows for proper application of the Open-Closed Principle. Question What are the disadvantages of self-encapsulation, if any? (Ideally, I would like to see references to studies that contrast the robustness of similarly complex systems that use and don't use self-encapsulation, as this strikes me as a fairly straightforward testable hypothesis.)

  • SharePoint For Newbie Developers: Code Scope

    So, I continue to try to come up with diagrams and information to help new SharePoint developers wrap their heads around this SharePoint beast, especially when those newer to development are on my team. To that end, I drew up the below diagram to help some of our junior devs understand where/when code is being executed in SharePoint at a high level. Note that I say “High Level”… This is a simplistic diagram that can get a LOT more complicated if you want to dive in deeper.  For the purposes of my lesson it served its purpose well. So, please no comments from you peanut gallery about information 3 levels down that’s missing unless it adds to the discussion.  Thanks So, the diagram below details where code is executed on a page load and gives the basic flow of the page load. There are actually many more steps, but again, we are staying high level here. I just know someone is still going to say something like “Well.. actually… the dlls are getting executed when…”  Anyway, here’s the diagram with some information I like to point out: Code Scope / Where it is executed So, looking at the diagram we see that dlls and XSL are executed on the server and that JavaScript/jQuery are executed on the client. This is the main thing I like to point out for the following reasons: XSL (for the most part) is faster than JavaScript I actually get this question a lot. Since XSL is executed on the server less data is getting passed over the wire and a beefier machine (hopefully) is doing the processing. The outcome of course is better performance. When You are using jQuery and making Web Service calls you are building XML strings and sending them to the server, then ALL the results come back and the client machine has to parse through the XML and use what it needs and ignore the rest (and there is a lot of garbage that comes back from SharePoint Web Service calls). XSL and JavaScript cannot work together in the same scope Let me clarify. JavaScript can send data back to SharePoint in postbacks that XSL can then use. XSL can output JavaScript and initiate JavaScript variables.  However, XSL cannot call a JavaScript method to get a value and JavaScript cannot directly interact with XSL and call its templates. They are executed in there scope only. No crossing of boundaries here. So, what does this all mean? Well, nothing too deep. This is just some basic fundamental information that all SharePoint devs need to understand. It will help you determine what is the best solution for your specific development situation and it will help the new guys understand why they get an error when trying to call a JavaScript Function from within XSL.  Let me know if you think quick little blogs like this are helpful or just add to the noise.   • Magento, NGINX, PHP-FPM, APC, MEMCACHED, 16gb Ram CentOS, Spiking PHP-FPM to 100% CPU

    I have been trying to resolve my issue of spiking cpu caused by php-fpm processes. I've reduced the php-fpm config settings to: pm = ondemand pm.max_children = 12 pm.start_servers = 2 pm.min_spare_servers = 2 pm.max_spare_servers = 10 pm.max_requests = 500 php_admin_value[memory_limit] = 128M Problem still exists. I'm running a Joomla main site (which is having no problems) and a Magento store in a sub-directory. My server is a Linux CentOS, running NGINX, APC, Memcached, Full Page Cache and php-fpm. My server has 8 cores and 16gb dedicated ram. My host has shut down my server several times the past week because my php-fpm processes are consuming the entire network. A lot of the individual php-fpm processes are getting over 50% cpu. I've hired several "professionals" and none of them was able to help me, so now broke and stumped, I'm turning to you guys for help. So any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. the server is not using much memory: Mem: 16777216k total, 1204040k used, 15573176k free My.conf settings: query_cache_size = 128M innodb_buffer_pool_size = 512M open-files-limit = 8192 table_cache=4096 I just noticed that someone changed my innodb_buffer_pool_size to 512M. Shouldn't this be set to 80% of available ram? So I have 16gb ram so it should be set at 12G; however, I set it at 10G. What do you think? I made that change and restart everything. Php-fpm is still spiking cpu.   • Spikes of 99% disk activity in Windows 8 Task Manager

    For some reason Windows 8's Task Manager reports spikes of 99% disk activity for hours at a time. Looking at the entries in that column, however, data doesn't seem to be getting written any more quickly than when the disk activity is around 25-50% (which it seem to idle at most of the time). Furthermore, when these 99% disk activity spikes are happening, the average response time reported in the Performance tab becomes 4000-6000ms. Is there a good way to find out what is causing the disk activity? I've tried using Process Explorer, but I said above, the rate at which data is reportedly being written doesn't seem to correspond (Dropbox and Google Chrome are constantly the top two, but the spikes are not dependent on their being open). Thanks in advance for any help. It gets very annoying when the computer stutters to a halt.

    I'm having diffculties configuring 20 new Dell Vostro minis here. I set up one of them with my preferred OS, applications and settings, especially the Visual Effects Settings of Windows XP. I set them to best performance and deactivated everything else in the box. I copied this profile to Default User Profile and did sysprep -mini -reseal. After capturing this image and deploying it again, the desktop settings are correct except the visual effects settings. fading and everything else is reenabled for each new user which is created on the system. How do I preserve my settings from being overwritten by sysprep? thanks!

    I've setup a nginx server running php 5.3.6 and mysql 5.5.1.3. My computer is an AMD quadcore 9650, 4gb ram, 500gb 7200rpm HD. I ran the PHP MySQL Benchmark Tool v. 0.1, and got the following results: Testing a(n) MYISAM table using 100000 rows. Successfully created database speedtestdb Sucessfully created table speedtesttable Table Type Verified: MYISAM .. Done. 100000 inserts in 19.73628 seconds or 5067 inserts per second. Done. 100000 row reads in 0.2801 seconds or 357015 row reads per second. Done. 100000 updates in 4.03876 seconds or 24760 updates per second. I'm wondering where this stands as far as performance goes, and what are some steps I can take if any to improve on this. I'm not trying to make anything fantastic, just getting a feel for how to best optimize a web server in this configuration.

  • CORAID using only 1 of the 2 available NICs for AoE traffic

    We got 6 CORAID shelves in my workplace. On 2 of them I see AoE traffic on only 1 of the 2 NICs that are attached to the SAN switch. We got jumbo frames enabled on all devices. Both NICs show up when I issue the aoe-interfaces command. This wouldn't bother me too much if the throughput performance observed on the "bad" shelves using bonnie++ wasn't half of the result of the "good" shelves. The "good" shelves are older SR1521 model and they have ReiserFS on their LUNS - not that I think it makes a difference - and the "bad" shelves are newer SR2421 model and have JFS. Any help as to what is going on and how to rectify this would be greatly appreciated. BTW: even the lower performing shelves outperform another iSCSI device we got, but that is another story...     I'll be receiving a new notebook in a few days and was planning on running Ubuntu on it as it's compatible and the notebook has no OS pre-installed. The specifications are: Core 2 Duo, T6600, 4 GB RAM, Intel integrated graphics. I know a year or two ago, running a 64-bit version of Ubuntu was not advised due to much of the applications and plugins (e.g. Flash) only running on 32-bit. Is this still the case? Would I get better performance with 64-bit Ubuntu since I have 4 GB of RAM? Are there any downsides anymore?

Besides checking the txkB/s and rxkB/s via Sar, I'd also like to see the average queue length of the network interface(so that the average queueing time in the interface can be calculated). It seems that netstat can give a per socket queue length, is it possible to get a per interface statics(a bit like Network Interface\Output Queue Length in Windows)? A related and kind of reverse questions is How do I view the TCP Send and Receive Queue sizes on Windows? Thanks
