I wish the SQL Server team would give it as much love. Service Broker is a wonderful technology, let down by poor resourcing.   • Modern Shader Book?

    I'm interested in learning about Shaders: What are they, when/for what would I use them, and how to use them. (Specifically I'm interested in Water and Bloom effects, but I know close to 0 about Shaders, so I need a general introduction). I saw a lot of books that are a couple of years old, so I don't know if they still apply. I'm targeting XNA 4.0 at the moment (which I believe means HLSL Shaders for Shader Model 4.0), but anything that generally targets DirectX 11 and OpenGL 4 is helpful I guess.

  • Good Intro to Computer Science Book for FE Developer [on hold]

    I am a JavaScript developer/architect who, like many developers these days, did not come from a Computer Science background (I studied Philosophy at a liberal arts college), but instead learned development by actually building applications, and by reading books explaining language grammars, design patterns, and best practices. I have never felt that my ignorance of CS concepts has hurt my ability to build great apps or find employment. Recently, however, I have felt the itch to grow in this direction. Do you have any suggestions for some good introductory CS resources/books? I know that Computer Science is a huge field and my question is very general, but I am looking for a 101-type survey of the high-level concepts, from which I can branch off into more specific areas of study. The course is based on a translation of the 2003 edition. I have two questions: Is it recommended to get the newer 2009 edition and what are the differences? Can anyone recommend a good companion text which has more worked problems and less, "this clearly works" type explanations?

  • Book suggestions for GUI related topics [closed]

    In the past, I've developed more on the server side, so no big GUI/graphic programming topics have crossed my way so far. I'm switching a little bit to the mobile plattforms (iOS, android) and would like to gather more info on the visual/graphic side. Using the SDK controls/widgets isn't that challenging and I would love to get deeper into the view/presentation layer. Animations, drawing itself, probably OpenGL. Any books that would take me a little deeper in understanding how drawing actually works would be helpful.

    People talking about deep linking, well I don't honestly see it a lot, but it's definitely very powerful, when you can understand how/why it works and how you can create deep backlinks, you'll be able to understand how to improve the traffic you get from Google, but ranking for more keywords. Deep link is more or less building backlinks to inner pages of your website, for example instead of just building backlinks for your index/domain, you should really build backlinks to your inner pages as well.
