  • Disable MySQL startup in Ubuntu 10.04

    Hi all, I want to prevent MySQL from starting in Ubuntu 10.04 I have used update-rc.d -f mysql remove and confirmed that there is no link to the /etc/inid.d/mysql script from any of the rc?.d directories. I also ran sysv-rc-conf and it shows me that MySQL is being called as part of the rc.d scripts. It is still starting on boot. How do I disable it? Regards, Bryan

    So far all sites have played nice but recently i ran into a site which aggressively tries to get users to sign up and pretty much puts the site on lockdown after 10 pageviews without signing up. What firefox extension can i use to either freeze or disable cookies for this one specific site? I dont want to whitelist every site i visit because one site is giving me trouble.

    If I run an executable file downloaded from the Internet, Windows displays a warning that this file can potentially harm my computer. This happens even for files downloaded by Firefox (not just IE.) On networked drive, this seems to slow down program launch time a lot. From Wikipedia, I learned that the feature is called "Attachment Execution Service". How can I completely disable it? If this cannot be done, how can I instruct Firefox not to set the "downloaded" flag on the file?

In Ubuntu Hardy Heron I could solve the problem by unchecking System-Preferences-Sound-System Beep-Visual system beep. However on Karmic Koala there is no such option. I googled and found many solutions for turning off visual beep/bell. However nothing seems to work. So my question is that what is the exact alternative to disable Visual system beep on Karmic?

After some research I found out the when enabling mod_cache this error sometimes occurs.     Google has an API which can determine someone's location based on the wifi router names which a user's computer can see. You will see this if you go to google maps and your browser may ask if you would like to share location data. I am wondering if there is any way to disable this on a system wide setting rather than just in each browser (Chrome can do this too).     So I'm planning on eventually going to 2 GB (mobo max) RAM from 1 GB, and I want to disable kernel paging once I do, because I've heard it can give a performance boost (and that I believe). Any reason not to do it or any general thoughts about it? Edit: for clarification, this is not disabling general RAM paging. This is disabling having kernel memory paged (or at least parts of it, as Charlls noted).

    Dreamweaver CS4 auto-detects the language for non unicode programs in windows, in my case it is russian, and conviniently sets the default encoding to be western european instead of the much preferred utf-8, it also changes several bits of text in DW into russian. how do i disable this detection and maintain Dreamweaver in full english? (without having to change the language for non-unicode programs in windows)
