  • What DBus signal is sent on system suspend?

    Hello, I need to detect when a machine is going to sleep in Ubuntu 9.10 and Fedora 13. Both use UPower, so I've been looking on the "org.freedesktop.UPower" DBus bus for such signals. I've been listening for the "sleeping" signal on the UPower bus with the following command: dbus-monitor --system "type='signal',interface='org.freedesktop.UPower',member='Sleeping'" When I sleep the machine (either by closing the lid, selecting "shutdown - suspend" or sending a DBus message) I don't see a "sleeping" event. I notice that the "Sleeping" event is sent when the "org.freedesktop.UPower.AboutToSleep" method is invoked. I can do this manually by calling: dbus-send --print-reply --system --dest=org.freedesktop.UPower /org/freedesktop/UPower org.freedesktop.UPower.AboutToSleep And I notice the "sleeping" signal is fired. My understanding is that anything that sleeps the PC must send the "AboutToSleep" signal before hand. It doesn't seem like this is happening. I've tried these steps on both Fedora 13 and Ubuntu 9.10 and I see the same results. Can anyone explain what's happening or provide me with an alternative DBus signal to listen for?     I am working in google spreadsheets and I am trying to do some counting that takes into consideration cell values across multiple cells in each row. Here's my table: |AUTHOR| |ARTICLE| |VERSION| |PRE-SELECTED| ANDREW GOLF STREAM 1 X ANDREW GOLF STREAM 2 X ANDREW HURRICANES 1 JOHN CAPE COD 1 X JOHN GOLF STREAM 1 (Google doc here) Each person can submit multiple articles as well as multiple versions of the same article. Sometimes different people submit different articles that happen to be identically named (Andrew and John both submitted different articles called "Golf Stream"). Multiple versions written by the same person do not count as unique, but articles with the same title written by different people do count as unique. So, I am looking to find a formula that Counts the number of unique articles that have been submitted [4] (without having to manually create extra columns for doing CONCATS, if possible) It would also be great to find formulas that: Count the number of unique articles that have been pre-selected (marked "X" in "PRE-SELECTED" column) [2] Count the number of unique articles that have only 1 version [4] Count the number of unique articles that have more than 1 of their versions pre-selected 1 Thank you so much!   • Can I make two wireless routers communicate using the wireless?

    I want to make a setup like this: cable modem <-cable- wireless router 1 <-wireless- wireless router 2 in another room <-cables- PCs in another room Basically, I want to extend my network access across the house and then have a bunch of network jacks available for my office PCs. Right now, I have a cable modem going to a wireless router in one room and a PC with a wireless PCI card in it in the office on the other side of the house. I use internet connection sharing with the other PCs in the office. The problem is that ICS is flaky, especially when I switch to VPN on the Windows box to access files at work. I picked up a wireless USB adapter that I thought I could share among the PCs I work on but I'm not very happy with it so I'm going to return it (NDISwrapper support for it is poor). Is this possible? My wireless experience so far has been pretty straightforward so I have no idea what kind of hardware is available. I've looked at network extenders but those just look like repeaters for signal strength. I want wired network jacks in my office.

  • Certificate Template Missing from "Certificate Template to Issue"

    I'm having a problem similar to that posted in this question: Missing Certificate template From certificate to issue The short version is that I've created a duplicate certificate template and I'm trying to add it to my domain CA so that I can issue certificates with it. However, when I go into the Certification Authority MMC and go to "Certificate Templates - New - Certificate Template To Issue", my template is missing (along with quite a number of other templates that are present in the domain). Unlike the previous question, however, my CA is running on Server 2008 R2 Enterprise. Our organization has a single DC and a single CA, so I'm not seeing where there could be propagation delay. Any ideas how to get my template to show so that I can issue certificates?

  • Fedora, ssh and sudo

    I have to run a script remotely on several Fedora machines through ssh. Since the script requires root priviliges, I do: $ ssh me@remost_host "sudo touch test_sudo" #just a simple example sudo: no tty present and no askpass program specified The remote machines are configured in such a way that the password for sudo is never asked for. For the above error, the most common fix is to allocate a pseudo-terminal with the -t option in ssh: $ ssh -t me@remost_host "sudo touch test_sudo" sudo: no tty present and no askpass program specified Let's try to force this allocation with -t -t: $ ssh -t -t me@remost_host "sudo touch test_sudo" sudo: no tty present and no askpass program specified Nope, it doesn't work. In /etc/sudoers of course I have this line: #Defaults requiretty ... but I can't manually change it on tens of remote machines. Am I missing something here? Is there an easy fix? EDIT: Here is the sudoers file of a host where ssh me@host "sudo stat ." works. Here is the sudoers file of a host where it doesn't work.   • Looking for the best ec2 setup for 3 sites totaling in 1.5 mil in traffic monthly

    I am looking to consolidate our current aws setup of 2 Large ubuntu ec2 servers and 2 large RDS server for our 3 websites that have a total of about 1.5 million hits a month and increasing every month with the majority of traffic (1 mil) to one forum site in the group and the rest of traffic to an ecommerce site and a small wordpress site. So here is my question/thought? Would it be better for us to combine the two ec2 large servers to just one and same with the 2 RDS servers so we run all three sites off one large ec2 and one RDS. -or- Should we setup maybe 2-3 smaller ec2 servers load balenced and a single RDS. -or- Something completely different setup? One concern is that if one site crashes it takes with it the others. It happened in the past but I am pretty sure its because of the forum software and not the server setup. -john

  • Setting up fail2ban to ban failed phpMyAdmin login attempts

    We've been using fail2ban to block failed ssh attempts. I would like to setup the same thing for phpMyAdmin as well. As phpMyAdmin doesn't log authentication attempts to a file (that I know of), I'm unsure of how best to go about this. Does a plugin / config exist that makes phpMyAdmin log authentication attempts to a file? Or is there some other place I should look for such an activity log? Ideally I will be able to find a solution that involved modifying fail2ban config only, as I have to configure fail2ban with the same options on multiple servers, and would prefer not to also modify the various phpMyAdmin installations on said servers.

    I recently installed the game watch dogs After installing it i upgraded the drivers on my graphics card AMD Radion R9 200 series via the catalyst software and since then windows has been crashing on an ad-hoc basis even when sitting idle I have recieved two different sets of errors OXOOOOOOO1 and VIDEO_SCHEDULER_INTERNAL_ERROR I am running windows 8.1 with the driver 14.4 from AMD My PC shouldnt really be having this problem as it is pretty high spec due to my work Any help would be greatly appreciated as it is driving me up the walls a bit [UPDATE 08-06-2014] I have been looking around online and have crashed the PC a few times now trying to recreate the bug I have looked into the event history viewer and gotten the following errors amdacpusrsvc acpusrsvc: IOCTL_ACPKSD_KSD_TO_USR_SVC_SET_FB_APERTURES: FAILED acpusrsvc: GfxMemServiceInitialize: FAILED amdacpusrsvc acpusrsvc: IOCTL_ACPKSD_KSD_TO_USR_SVC_SET_FB_APERTURES: FAILED amdacpusrsvc acpusrsvc: GfxMemServiceInitialize: FAILED I took some advice from the AMD forums to re-install the old drivers to see if they would work. I uninstalled the old ones first and installed directly from the CD I got the warnings below but the driver installed "successfully" The Warnings are amdacpusrsvc acpusrsvc: ConfigureFrameBufferMemory: FAILED. Hopefully this will spark something off for someone Thanks John

  • Guestfish not found on Debian 7 when execute virt-copy-in [on hold]

    When I execute virt-copy-in command on a kvm host(Debian7.1), I got error saying "guestfish not found". However according to the dpkg comamnd, guestfish do have been installed: john@sver:~$ dpkg-query -l | grep guestfs* ii libguestfs-perl ... ii libguestfs-tools ... ii libguestfs0 ... What's the problem? Is the libguestfs-tools not the guestfish in Debian? Or it's just a broken dependency in libguestfs-tools in Debian7.1(my KVM Host)?

  • Adding a single 300Gb SCSI drive to poweredge 2850

    I have a 2850 setup with 3 146Gb drives, two partitions 1 12GB system with server 2003 sp2 and 1 261Gb Data. I am strapped on disk space on the data partition having to push data around. I wanted to add a 300Gb single drive for lesser critical data, is this possible? Or is it best to add 2 300Gb drives for another RAID 1 configuration? This is my church network and while it is mission critical it is not enterprise so I can take it down for a few hours. Any pointers to documentation or direct help would be greatly appreciated. John

  • When DNS doesn't cache

    We've had some odd DNS problems over the past couple of days that I don't fully understand. Some of our DNS names stopped resolving for some of our customers due to some 'unknown' server reconfiguration at our DNS provider. The problem seemed to be intermittent i.e. stopped working and started working within a few minutes over a couple of days. I'm no expert on DNS, but I'd have expected DNS caches to prevent this sort of thing from happening - when we need to change an IP address for a DNS record, it can take 24 hours to propogate, so how can our DNS provider be breaking name resolution intermittently for our customers so easily? Shouldn't the DNS caches kick in here? We had a similar problem about a month ago when one of their nameservers 'decided to reload the DNS database from scratch' - this broke our name resolution too. Again, why didn't the caches satisfy the name resolution requests. Any guesses would be appreciated. John

  • NFS or GFS for LVS 10 Server Setup

    Currently we have a 10 servers LVS hosting setup. The people we hired to set it up did not anything about GFS which was our preferred Central Storage File System Solution. As we have tight time constraint, we just told them to use whatever they were familiar with which is NFS. I have since done some research and it seems that NFS is not ideal for the type of high traffic site we are hoping to build. I couldn't find much info online about the signaficance differences between the 2. As we to setup all servers again right now, should we stick with NFS or find someone who knows how to setup GFS amd go with that. We need a setup that is highly reliable and scalable as we intend. As after initial setup is done, we expect high increases in traffic and load.

Basic workflow of events: Customer sends email to [email protected] from [email protected] ACME administrator receives notification and can moderate email After moderation administrator confirm an email and send it to [email protected] John answears to [email protected] Before the email is send it is moderated again by ACME administrator What is important, that this functionality is easy to do with some CMS/CMF systems.   • Installing WinPcap on Windows 8

    I know there has been lots of discussion already on installing WinPcap on Windows 8. I'm running the RTM version. I was able to install WinPcap without a hitch by using the Windows 7 compatibility mode. Since then, I've noticed that WinPcap has stopped running and is actually no longer even installed. I tried installing it again, but now it continues to tell me that WinPcap does not work with my version of Windows. Compatibility modes and admin privileges make no difference. The only thing I remember doing to my system was installed 900MBs of Windows Updates. Does anyone have any ideas about what I might do to get WinPcap installed? I've already ensured that the compatibility mode settings I changed were in effect for all users. I've already ensured that "run this program as an administrator" is checked on the compatibility tab for all users. I've also tried installing WinPcap 4.1.2 and 4.1.1. No success with either.

    (i'm just trying to find what am I missing...) Assuming John have a clear text message , he can create a regular hash ( like md5 , or sha256) and then encrypt the message. John can now send Paul the message + its (clear text)hash and Paul can know if the message was altered. ( decrypt and then compare hashes). Even if an attacker can change the encrpyted data ( without decrypt) - - when paul will open the message - and recalc the hash - it wont generate the same hash as the one john sent him. so why do we need hash by key ?

    I set up a Microsoft Exchange account on my iOS device to sync my Gmail contacts. But Microsoft Exchange is ignoring phone numbers that are labeled as 'iPhone' or 'main'.     After days of trying all sorts of tutorials I finally found a simple solution (not necessary the best) for a functional ubuntu mail server: sudo aptitude install postfix next type sudo dpkg-reconfigure postfix and configure like this: Internet Site yourdomain.com john (type your ubuntu user) yourdomain.com, localhost.localdomain, localhost No 127.0.0.0/8 [::ffff:127.0.0.0]/104 [::1]/192.168.0.1/24 (192.198.0.1 replace with your server ip address) 0 + all next install mail-stack-delivery sudo aptitude install mail-stack-delivery At this point you have a working mail server. Next, I configured SquirrelMail and start sending and receaving mail. This configuration worked with both Apache and Nginx.

  • Add 802.11n to existing 802.11g environment

    I have a small home network that is currently running 802.11g. Two computers that are capable of 802.11n and two devices (a BlackBerry and a Skype phone) that are limited to 802.11g. I have a few neighbors running 802.11g but their signals are very weak. How big an impact will the two G devices have on N speeds? Will they pull the whole network back down to G? These two devices are hardly ever used where as the other N devices are heavily used. If I add an N router to the network (instead of replacing the G) and set my existing G router to use channel 1 with 20MHz bandwidth and then set the N router to use 6 & 11 for 40MHz will I eliminate the overlap and allow for full speed on both networks?

  • trying to figure out how to bridge two virtual networks together and in turn bridge that to the internet for a virtual inline IDS/IPS system

    I'm trying to figure out how to bridge two vmware (server or workstation, workstation) or virtualbox networks together with a linux IDS/IPS system transparently inline between both the virtual networks. How do I accomplish this? I understand how to bridge to virtual networks together, but how to I make the linux virtual machine sit between them and force traffic to go across the transparent bridge? I would like to have something along the lines of: vmnet a various vms host-only network ---- inline linux box vmnet a boxes forced to go through here to get to the internet --- vmnet b network with internet access configured as either NAT or bridged -- internet I know that basically the linux box needs two virtual nics, one on vmnet a and vmnet b, but other than that, I don't know how to force all the traffic to go across the "transparent" bridging linux box on its way to the internet. Do vmnet a and b have to be the same ip network with the same default route? does vmnet a not have a default route and vmnet b have a default route? I've read in vmware forums that on the linux host you need to change permissions on the vmnet files for promiscuous mode? is this true? how do you configure this scenario on a windows box?

  • iPhoto & iPhone Album order is different

    I can't seem to find any answers to this, I have around 100 albums in iPhoto on my Mac, they are all synced to my iPhone, but on the phone they are just being displayed in a seeming random order. I have removed all the photos from the phone and started again, but they go back in the same order. In iPhoto the albums are actually in alphabetical order, have I've clicked the sort albums option, but this did nothing? Any ideas?

  • syntax error: unknown user 'munin' in statoverride file

    Server running Ubuntu 12.04 lts I installed munin the other day on a server. I decided later to remove it with apt-get. I noticed that not everything was removed from the installation so manually removed the munin web directory and also removed the munin user-name and group from the sever. However I have just now tried to run apt-get upgrade which is now returning an error: dpkg: unrecoverable fatal error, aborting: syntax error: unknown user 'munin' in statoverride file E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2) I am now out of my depth. What does this mean? Google results have not really been helpful. Can anyone help? Thanks, John
