• How to improve relationships between consultants and staff programmers

  I have been a consultant for a small software consulting firm for quite some time now. Our normal business model is not staff augmentation, but such that we find clients who need assistance in building a solution of some kind and then send in a team who can build that solution, work with the existing IT staff, train all involved on supportting that solution, then move on to the next job. We, of course, are still around for any needed ongoing support. We have a great reputation in our area and have been very successful in implementing the solutions that we provide. However, I have noticed a common theme for most of our projects. When we get on-site, there is generally a "stressed" relationship between our team and many of the IT staff currently at the client. I understand completely that there may be some anxiety about our arrival and that defenses can come up when we are around. Many of the folks are understanding and easy to work with, but there are usually some who will not work well with us at all, and who can quickly become a project risk in many ways. We try to go in with open minds and good attitudes, and try NOT to be arrogent or condecending. We generally get deployed when there is a mess to clean up - but we understand that there were reasons decisions were made that got them in the bind they are...so we just try to determine the next step forward and move on. My question is this - I'd like to hear from the IT staff and programmers out there who have had consultants in - what are the things that consultants do that fire up negative feelings and attitudes? What can we do better to make the relationship better, not only in the beginning, but as the project moves forward?

• Web developing- Strange happenings

  As I'm teaching myself PHP and MySQL during break, I'm experimenting coding in a Ubuntu virtual machine where Apache, MySQL and PHP have been installed and configured to a shared folder. I'm not a big fan of Kompozer because the source code layout is a PIA, so I've started checking out gPHPEdit. However, since using it, I've come across two issues: when I edit the .html and .php files, sometimes the file extension will change to .html~ and .php~, becoming invisible to the browser. The only solution is to switch to Windows, right click and rename the file extension. In Ubuntu Firefox, when I click on my prpject's Submit button for in a practice form, a dialog box pops up asking what Firefox should do with the .php file, rather than simply displaying it in the browser. When I do this in Windows Chrome & Firefox, it goes right to the response page. I'm not sure if this behavior is limited to gPHPEdit/Kompozer, but I've never noticed this happening in Dreamweaver. Any solutions? EDIT The behavior in Point 1 occurs both when Dreamweaver is open in Windows accessing the same files and when it is not. I changed the extension filename of welcome.php, added a comment in gPHPEdit, and the file changed to welcome.php~ upon saving.

• Managing JS and CSS for a static HTML web application

  I'm working on a smallish web application that uses a little bit of static HTML and relies on JavaScript to load the application data as JSON and dynamically create the web page elements from that. First question: Is this a fundamentally bad idea? I'm unclear on how many web sites and web applications completely dispense with server-side generation of HTML. (There are obvious disadvantages of JS-only web apps in the areas of graceful degradation / progressive enhancement and being search engine friendly, but I don't believe that these are an issue for this particular app.) Second question: What's the best way to manage the static HTML, JS, and CSS? For my "development build," I'd like non-minified third-party code, multiple JS and CSS files for easier organization, etc. For the "release build," everything should be minified, concatenated together, etc. If I was doing server-side generation of HTML, it'd be easy to have my web framework generate different development versus release HTML that includes multiple verbose versus concatenated minified code. But given that I'm only doing any static HTML, what's the best way to manage this? (I realize I could hack something together with ERB or Perl, but I'm wondering if there are any standard solutions.) In particular, since I'm not doing any server-side HTML generation, is there an easy, semi-standard way of setting up my static HTML so that it contains code like <script src="js/vendors/jquery.js"></script> <script src="js/class_a.js"></script> <script src="js/class_b.js"></script> <script src="js/main.js"></script> at development time and <script src="http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.8.2/jquery.min.js"></script> <script src="js/entire_app.min.js"></script> for release?

• Acer aspire one d270 can not set brightness

  I hope you can help me figure out how to set the brightness at my netbook. Following problem appears since I installed ubuntu 11.10 on my acer: I am not able to adjust the brightness by FN Keys nor manually at "systemsettings-display". After searching with google for a while, I found a way via the terminal to adjust it with the folloqing command: "sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 f4.b=7f" ( from 00-9f). That was a major breakthrough for me as I am still new to Linux OS. But still seeking a way to get the FN keys for brightness to work, I kept searching until I found "askubuntu.com". I read through various Questions by other acer users and tried there solutions, but unfortunately none worked out for me. From this thread: fn + arrow keys don't adjust actual brightness on an Acer Aspire 5740 "sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf". This command did not work because the file was not found. I also used nano instead of gedit, but the file was empty( I think it just created the file since it did not exist). These commands which i found gave me a boot loop and I had to repair ubuntu: sudo gedit /etc/default/grub Change the line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="" into GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi_osi=Linux" sudo update-grub From this post Screen Brightness not adjustable for Acer Aspire S3: I tried the solution from the last post, but it did not work either. Does anyone know what I could try? I would appreciate it, if someone could help me out with this. • Windows Phone 7 Prototype 002: Animated Page Transitions + Writeable Bitmaps

  Motion is a key part of WP7 application development. Without motion, the WP7 UI is just a bunch of text. Not nearly as exciting. To delight users, you can add some transitions between pages.  The sample app includes some storyboards to animate between two pages. Other people have noted that you can just use the transitioning content control form the SIlverlight toolkit. Peter Torr also had a nice animating frame control in his mix demo code (his blog has some other great code samples for WP7 app dev). I took some of those concepts and the code from the TransitioningContentControl to make a new animating frame control. In this prototype, the frame takes a snapshot of the old content and the new content using writeable bitmaps and animates the snapshots and then replaces those with the actual page. The benefit is smoother animation on pages with lots of controls. Otherwise, if you have a large panorama, it might not animate that cleanly.  Like the other solutions based on the TransitioningContentControl, you can centralize all the animations in one place and not have to handle them on each individual page. Peters code also had a nice snippet for choosing the animation based on the navigation direction so you could just have a forward / backward animation and not have to do anything on each page. You could also probably add some more advanced transitions using pixel shaders or make an default no transition state if you wanted to have some specific animation on a page where individual  controls transitioned out differently like some of the WP7 shell apps. • REST and redirecting the response

  I'm developing a RESTful service. Here is a map of the current feature set: POST /api/document/file.jpg (creates the resource) GET /api/document/file.jpg (retrieves the resource) DELETE /api/document/file.jpg (removes the resource) So far, it does everything you might expect. I have a particular use case where I need to set up the browser to send a POST request using the multipart/form-data encoding for the document upload but when it is completed I want to redirect them back to the form. I know how to do a redirect, but I'm not certain about how the client and server should negotiate this behavior. Two approaches I'm considering: On the server check for the multipart/form-data encoding and, if present, redirect to the referrer when the request is complete. Add a service URI of /api/document/file.jpg/redirect to redirect to the referrer when the request is complete. I looked into setting an X header (X-myapp-redirect) but you can't tell the browser which headers to use like this. I manage the code for both the client and the server side so I'm flexible on solutions here. Is there a best practice to follow here?

• Developing professionally for iOS, Android and web - an insight

  This is not really a question on how to develop all three, I know various cross platform ways and so on. But I more want to know from developer standpoint how hard it is to basically develop iOS, Android and web apps? I am currently in my first job as a mobile/web developer. I have already developed my first iPhone/iPad app and now I have to develop the app for android because the web version I tried just didn't perform as well as needed and web databases just did not seem to make the cut. But I am not sure it's possible to be good at developing all 3 in terms of remembering all the api's etc. I wouldn't say I have an issue with the programming languages just how to use the api's for the various platforms. Also, all the other languages I look at, in my spare time, just feel like I am spreading myself to thin. Is it feasible for one person to be developing ios, android and web apps? Should I think about reducing it to iOS and web based apps? I develop everything by myself, so I have no one to discuss what the best solutions are for everything and I am just trying to workout as I go along. So any cross platform developers out there? Do companies have different teams for different platforms? Any insight would just help me get my head together. Hopefully this question makes sense.

• Visual WebGui helps Dawsons put its Windows Forms HR system on the web

  Dawsons needed to upgrade their existing Windows Forms LAN human resources system to allow better and flexible access to the ever increasing data size as labor hire clients are demanding easy access to copies of tickets and licenses and etc. The company has some 30,000 applicants on file, but access to this data has been complex and limited with the current system. Therefore the IT department was asked to find a possible solutions that would allow creating a web based application while utilizing as much of the existing Windows Forms code as possible. Visual WebGui was found to be highly regarded in many frameworks comparisons so the team decided to give Visual WebGui a try. It didn’t take long for them to recognize that the Visual WebGui controls appear and react over the web the same as desktop controls. • New technical product guide for Sun Ray clients

  In the Oracle online documentation system a new Sun Ray clients Technical Product guide has been published. The document provides detailed information about the similarities and differences between the three Sun Ray client hardware models: Sun Ray 3, Sun Ray 3 plus and Sun Ray 3i. From the description of the Technical Product guide I want to quote the following section: "......Since Sun Ray 3 Series Clients have no local operating system and require no local management, they eliminate the complexity, expenses, and security vulnerabilities associated with other thin client and PC solutions. ......" This is always one of the great advantages of Sun Ray clients compared to other thin clients (which are actually low-fat PCs where you have to manage thin client OS images). The guide lists the features and technical specifications of the Sun Ray Client such as number of ports, chassis, graphics, network interfaces, power supply, operating conditions, MTBF, reliability, and other standards. The guide also contains a separate chapter about environmental data. As you may know, the Sun Ray 3 Series clients are designed specifically to be sensitive to a spectrum of environmental concerns and standards, from materials to manufacturing processes to shipping, operation, and end of life. • WebCenter Customer Advisory Board meetings kick off Oracle Open World 2012!

  Welcome to OpenWorld! OpenWorld 2012 got underway today with a series of meetings with the members of the WebCenter Customer Advisory Board. Led by the WebCenter Product Management team, these meetings are a great way for the product team and customers to directly interact and discuss real-life business challenges, product details and to discuss upcoming features and functionality. This year, board members participated in discussions around live demos around product enhancements that will be featured throughout the coming week. Highlights included a variety of new mobile and social solutions, a great new user interface for WebCenter Content plus new Portal and Sites functionality that makes the experience for the everyday user a lot more pleasant. The day kicked off with Roel Stalman, VP of Product Management, giving a detailed overview of what’s new in WebCenter. Given all the improvements to discuss, this session went over 2 hours! Roel showcased the brand new UI for Content, Portal and Sites. He also gave live demos of the new mobile apps for WebCenter Content, Portal and the Oracle Social Network.  The attendees then broke into sub-groups in order to deep-dive with Product Management for the Portal, Sites, and Content product areas on specific functionality and application integrations. If you are here in San Francisco this week for OpenWorld, I definitely recommend stopping by the WebCenter area in the Moscone West Exhibition Hall to see some of this new functionality for yourself. • Backtick (Grave accent) button sticking

  I have Ubuntu 12.04 running in a Virtual Box virtual machine, on my Windows 7 32bit system. It has been working great, except that the backtick/tilde button sticks(not physically). When I hit the backtick button it keeps repeating until another input button is pressed. So if I press the spacebar while the backtick is repeating, it stops, but if I press the shift while it is repeating, the backtick turns into a tilde, and the tilde keeps repeating until I release the shift key (at which point it's a backtick again and keeps repeating). This sticking behavior only happens with the backtick key, and only in my Ubuntu virtualization, never in windows. I've tried both my laptop's keyboard and an external USB keyboard and the problem happens on both. Both keyboards I've tried are Japanese 106/109 key layout, but I'm using them with a English(US) 101 profile. When I refer to the backtick key above, I mean where it is on the US layout. If I use the Japanese profile, the key in that location (the US backtick location) still sticks, but its no longer mapped as the backtick key. Any thoughts as to what might be causing this and possible solutions? I've searched a lot, but have not found any help so far. Any help is greatly appreciated.
