  • How do I securely store and manage 180 passwords?

    I have about 180 passwords for different websites and web services. They are all stored in one single password protected Excel document. As the list gets longer I am more and more concerned about its security. Just how secure, or should I say insecure, is a password protected Excel document? What's the best practice for storing this many passwords in a secure and easy manageable way? I find the Excel method to be easy enough, but I am concerned about the security aspect.

  • Tracking the linux config with git: how?

    I'd like to track my linux configurations with git. My idea is to have a branch for each server. /etc is not the only one directory to be tracked (I won't git init in '/etc' ) As far as I could see, it is possible to init a git for a distant directory. I tried this: # mkdir -p /git/.git # cd /git # git --work-tree=/ --git-dir=/git/.git init Initialized empty Git repository in /git/.git/ 1) Creating a new branch before everything is not possible # git branch server1 fatal: Not a valid object name: 'HEAD'. 2) adding a file in master/HEAD is not possible # touch README.md # git add README.md fatal: Unable to create '//.git/index.lock': No such file or directory how should I properly setup git to track my system-config ?   • What is the process to fix track listing error on Spotify that is also wrong on the CD?

    I've just been listening to The Complete John Cage Edition Volume 18: The Choral Works 1 but the track listing is wrong. (N.B. I'm not a Cage genius, but a new twitter friend is and pointed this out to me). The CD comes from a label called Mode and the track listing is also wrong on the CD so it's not just a Spotify DB thing. What database do Spotify use for their track listings and what is the correct process for getting it corrected when there is an error?

    I am trying to install a package that depends on python-keybinder and hence on libkeybinder. When I run makepkg for libkeybinder, it starts and after sometime I get the following error: checking for XkbQueryExtension... no configure: error: Could not find XKB ==> ERROR: A failure occurred in build(). Aborting... ==> ERROR: Makepkg was unable to build libkeybinder. I tried checking the pkgbuild but wasn't able to find anything. :( Is there a workaround?

    Related: Is there an alternative to iTunes? (for Windows or Mac) thats free? I'm looking for a free, lightweight iTunes replacement for my Windows XP Netbook. iTunes itself is slow and bloated. The software should be able to read the iTunes library, espeacially the ratings of the songs and the intelligent playlists. I don't need the sync to an iPod because I don't own one, I used iTunes only as a jukebox. I also don't need the store, the podcasts and all the other things iTunes provides. Does someone know a good alternative?

    Hi, Is there an app or utility in Windows that shows me the peak value of in-use memory (i.e., the total of the shareable and private memory of processes, drivers and the operating system) (not standby nor free)? I've got lots of memory and I'm installing an in-memory file cache, called "eBoostr", and would like an idea how much memory to allocate for it and still avoid deteriorating page faults.     I often need to log in with a user's domain account to make sure that I've set up their profile correctly, but there's no easy way to do this other than to call them and give them a temp pass and force them to change it (bad, since they often forget it,) or ask for their password (worse.) Is there any way to change a user's password, then set it back to the original later? I tried to see if there was any way to get the NTLM hash so I could set it back later, but there doesn't seem to be a facility for that built into AD.

  • Sharepoint Document Library not receiving emails

    I have created a sharepoint document library which is email enabled. However when i send email to the designated email address from anywhere, i dont receive the email & attachment in the list. I have done some R&D and i hv found that in order to receive email from anywhere i have to expose my DNS of the sharepoint site to the outside world. Now i dont know whether it applies to the email address designated to me in the Active directory profile as well (my company domain email address). How to test that this email reception is working in the document library? I have tried sending an email from the sharepoint site and it works fine so the SMTP settings are correctly done.

    I have a small domain of users that I just migrated from a linux domain running open-ldap. Our new servers are running Windows 2008 Standard. I've installed Active Directory and everything is working perfectly... except that the initial user privileges is pretty restrictive and I need to loosen it up a bit. For example once they login to their workstations, they can create new files and folders but can not modify existing files or start. I basically want to open it all up except for software installations. Can someone please help with with this migration headache?

  • Is it possible reinstall packages in Ubuntu without an internet connection?

    Hi everyone, While experiencing some massive problems with MYSQL, I completely removed a package called rsyslog, and I can no longer get on the internet to use the package manager to correct my mistake. I also got rid of librdf0 as well (oops). I would like to download the missing packages onto a CD with another computer, and manually reinstall them on my Ubuntu platform. Any ideas where to find these? (I am assuming this is the package I need. Either way, I still need to get access to the correct packages and install them). Thank you all very much in advance. Matt

    Our websites are being crawled by content thieves on a regular basis. We obviously want to let through the nice bots and legitimate user activity, but block questionable activity. We have tried IP blocking at our firewall, but this becomes to manage the block lists. Also, we have used IIS-handlers, however that complicates our web applications. Is anyone familiar with network appliances, firewalls or application services (say for IIS) that can reduce or eliminate the content scrapers?

    Is there the possibility to limit Active Directory users' max concurrent login sessions? I've read many articles and discussions about the solution, but none of them seem to be working. Many had suggested UserLogin script that doesn't work in Windows Server 2008. Some other suggested CConnect that is not good enough. It's also very complicated. Some others have introduced UserLock that should be paid for. It's wondering that Windows Server 2003 DOES have the feature (wile as a third-party), but Windows Server 2008 doesn't have!     Most of the time, I need to have an active VPN connection when working from my home PC. I've discovered, that if the VPN is active, and I leave the computer, the computer does not go to sleep automatically, as it should. If i disconnect VPN, it works. Why is that ? How can I ensure that my PC can go into sleep mode automatically even with the VPN connection on ?

    I know there are some great apps out there for keeping track of passwords (see how-do-you-keep-track-of-all-your-passwords if you aren't familiar). I'm interested in additional features for managing my passwords, particularly to reset all my passwords. I can imagine that this feature would be pretty complicated to implement, considering: websites have different methods for resetting a password client applications most likely don't have a means to change a password except for through a graphical user interface (as opposed to providing a command line command) So, I'm curious if there is a solution out there and I just haven't found it. If not, perhaps I will have to start another side project.

    I'm interested in any software, experience or guidelines listed that help to deal with listing installed services, their primary user (or business person that is responsible for this service), domain names, ip addresses, ports in your servers. Servers are both Windows and Linux, so licenses are also good to track with all of this information. Scale of the infrastructure in question - 20-50 servers. Currently we have no better idea as to use Excel for it.

    In a project, we have lots of Windows user that have bought licenses for 1 month, 2 month,... 1 year and so... CURRENT SITUATION (WHAT I DON'T WANT): When users are created and added to the OS, a solid expiration date is given. WHAT I WANT: Users' expiration date should be calculated automatically after first login. The user might not need his account right when purchases the license. In another words: When a license is purchased at Jan 1, he should use the license until Feb 1. No matter whether he really logs in or not. He cannot come Feb 5 and begin using his license because that has expired then. What I want is that when he comes at Feb 5 and begins using, the license update until March 5.   • Java: compile and run hanging at command prompt

    I'm having an issue that I'm hoping someone can help with. I'm working on netbook running WinXP Pro SP3, 1.6GHz & 1GB of RAM. I've got a relatively simple java program that I'm able to successfully compile and run on other computers (both XP and Win7), so I suspect my code is working fine--I've verified that all computers are running the same version of Java (build 1.7.0_02-b13). For about the past week, I get maybe three or four compiles and runs at the command prompt (running CMD from within WinXp) before I hang with a blinking cursor after keying my command and pressing enter. If I shut down the command prompt window and restart it, I can compile and run the program just fine--again, pointing to an OS/environment issue rather than code. The only system change I've made in the past week is to uninstall a Lexmark printer that I ditched a year ago, and removing/reinstalling Java. Oh, and an automatic Windows update... :\ I've used this netbook successfully for programming classes for the past year and a half. Anyone familiar with this issue and know of some system tweaks to solve it? I suspect that memory may not be getting cleaned up when the java program quits...only when CMD closes, but don't know any tools to troubleshoot. Ideas?

    I am new to Linux and am running CentOs. When I want to update or install certain software I came across three ways. Sometimes it's: yum install program rpm -i program.rpm wget program.tar.gz unpack ./configure make make install That last one is a real pain, esp when you come from windows where a program install is usually one click and then a nice guide. Now can someone please explain to me: Why are there so many different ways to do this? Which one do you recommend to use and why? Are there any other ways for installing programs?
