• Windows 2003, SQL 2005 - What is server tasking and where do I find it?

  Hi, I've been reading up on how to tune SQL Server 2005 for a machine in a test environment. I came across this article on technet which suggests how to configure "server tasking" and says I should refer to the Windows 2003 docs for more info. I have googled Windows 2003 "server tasking" (with and without the quotes) but all I can find is more similar articles on SQL server telling me that it should be configured, not how/where you do it. I know I'm probably searching for the wrong thing - can someone please tell me how to configure it in Windows or SQL server, whichever it is?

• Less reboots on Windows Server Core, is this true or just a myth?

  Because there are less components installed on a Windows Server core OS, it needs less patches than the full OS. I read in several places that therefor it needs less reboots after patching. I'm running Server 2012 core in production since September 2012 now and I don't remember a single patch-Tuesday when I did not have to reboot the server after installing Windows updates. Are there any hard numbers out there that compare the required reboots for core vs. Full OS? Less reboots may be the main reason why people choose to go with Server core. If it actually requires just as many reboots as the full OS install, they may think again the next time they set up a server.

• so i installed sql server now how do i connect to it?

  SO i have a server running windows server 2008 r2 and i just installed Microsoft sql server 2008. I used the manager thing to create the database and the tables, etc and now i want to connect to it via my visual studio which is on a different machine. so how do i do that? do i need to "turn on" the sql server, do i need to do port forwarding? do i have to modify the iis or change those settings? is there a good article someone can me point me to? just to further help you help me, i understand how to connect to a datasource in visual studio my problem is more with the sql server and understanding how to properly set it up once installed. Sorry for the noob question, i got it all installed and i know how to use it once its all going i just don't know the in-between. thanks in advance dave

• SQL server could not connect: Lacked Sufficient Buffer Space...

  I recently moved my app to a new server - the app is written in c# against the 3.5 framework. The hardware is faster but the OS is the same (Win Server 2003). No new software is running. On the prior hardware the app would run for months with no problems. Now, in this new install, I get the following error after about 3 days, and the only way to fix it is to reboot: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - An operation on a socket could not be performed because the system lacked sufficient buffer space or because a queue was full.) I have yet to find a service I can even shut down to make it work. Anyone had this before and know a solution?

  I am getting following error while connecting to my local Sql Express. An error has occurred. Details of the exception: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a conne ction to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Serve r/Instance Specified) Unable to connect to SQL Server database. I am able to connect to Sql Server using Management Studio.

• Server's network capabilities are going into some sort of sleep mode?

  I'm having trouble with a server (Windows Server 2008 R2) on my network. It is going down for short periods at a time, but not very often. The interesting thing: If I ping the server from my computer (we'll call this client-x) using the -t switch, I will continuously get no reply. However the second I ping client-x from the server, I can see the previous ping pick up a reply? It's almost as if pinging client-x from the server, wakes up the networking capabilities? Has anybody got any idea what is going on here?

• Upgrade to 2008 R2

  I don't like it, Carruthers. It's just too quiet. Well, I've done the pre-production server, the main live server and the Reporting/BI server with remarkably little trouble. Pre-production and live were rebuilds. I failed live over to our log shipping standby for the duration, which has a gotcha I blogged about before. When I failed back to the primary live server again, it was very quick to bring the databases online. I understand the databases don't actually get upgraded until you recover them but there was no noticable delay. It's gone from 2005 Workgroup - limited to 4GB of memory - to 2008 R2 Standard so it can now use nearly all of the 30GB in the server. It's soo much faster. The reporting/BI server I upgraded in situ. This took a while but, again, went smoothly. Just watch out, because the master database was left at compatibility level 90. Also the upgrade decided to use the reporting service's credentials for database access when running reports. It didn't preserve the existing credentials and I had to go into the Reporting Configuration Manager to put them back in. Make sure you know what credentials your server is using before you upgrade. All things considered, a fairly painless experience. Now I just have to upgrade and reset our log shipping standby server again!

When I look back all of this year, I am happy that we are here together. 2007 IT Outsourcing to India – Top 10 Reasons Companies Outsource Outsourcing is about trust, collaboration and success. Helping other countries in need has been always the course of mankind, outsourcing is nothing different then that. With information technology and process improvements increasing the complexity, costs and skills required to accomplish routine tasks as well as challenging complex tasks, companies are outsourcing such tasks to providers who have the expertise to perform them at lower costs , with greater value and quality outcome. UDF – Remove Duplicate Chars From String This was a very interesting function I wrote in my early career. I am still using this function when I have to remove duplicate chars from strings. I have yet to come across a scenario where it does not work so I keep on using it till today. Please leave a comment if there is any better solution to this problem. FIX : Error : 3702 Cannot drop database because it is currently in use This is a very generic error when DROP Database is command is executed and the database is not dropped. The common mistake user is kept the connection open with this database and trying to drop the database. The database cannot be dropped if there is any other connection open along with it. It is always a good idea to take database in single user mode before dropping it. Default Collation of SQL Server 2008 What is the collation of SQL Server 2008 default installations? I often see this question confusing many experienced developers as well. Well the answer is in following image. Ahmedabad SQL Server User Group Meeting – November 2008 User group meetings are fun, now a days I am going to User Group meetings every week but there was a case when I have been just a beginner on this subject. The bug of the community was caught on me years ago when I started to present in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar SQ LServer User Groups. 2009 Validate an XML document in TSQL using XSD My friend Jacob Sebastian wrote an excellent article on the subject XML and XSD. Because of the ‘eXtensible’ nature of XML (eXtensible Markup Language), often there is a requirement to restrict and validate the content of an XML document to a pre-defined structure and values. XSD (XML Schema Definition Language) is the W3C recommended language for describing and validating XML documents. SQL Server implements XSD as XML Schema Collections. Star Join Query Optimization At present, when queries are sent to very large databases, millions of rows are returned. Also the users have to go through extended query response times when joining multiple tables are involved with such queries. ‘Star Join Query Optimization’ is a new feature of SQL Server 2008 Enterprise Edition. This mechanism uses bitmap filtering for improving the performance of some types of queries by the effective retrieval of rows from fact tables. 2010 These puzzles are very interesting and intriguing – there was lots of interest on this subject. I wrote a code and suddenly 10 hands went up in the air.  This was a bit surprise to me as I do not know why they all got alerted. Error: Deleting Offline Database and Creating the Same Name This is very interesting because once a user deletes the offline database the MDF and LDF file still exists and if the user attempts to create a new database with the same name it will give error.   Overview The Workflow Analyzer is a standalone, easy to run tool created to read, validate and troubleshoot Workflow components configuration as well as runtime. It identifies areas where potential problems may arise and based on set of best practices suggests the Workflow System Administrator what to do when such potential problems are found. This tool represents a proactive way to verify Workflow configuration and runtime data to prevent issues ahead of time before they may become of more considerable impact on a production environment. Installation Since it is standalone there are no pre-requisites and runs on Oracle E-Business applications from 11.5.10 onwards. It is installed in the back-end server and can be run directly from SQL*Plus. • Migrating Forms to Java or ADF, the truth and no FUD

  The question about migrating Forms to Java (or ADF or APEX) comes up time and time again.  I wanted to pull some core information together in a single blog post to address this question. The first question I always ask is "WHY" - Forms may still be a viable option for you so "if it ain't broke don't fix it".  Bottom line is whatever anyone tells you, its going to be a considerable effort and cost to migrate from Forms to something else so the business is going to want to know WHY you spend all those hard earned dollars switching from something that might have been serving you quite adequately. Second point, if you are going to switch, I would encourage you NOT to look at building a Forms clone.  So many times I see people trying to build an ADF application and EXACTLY mimic the Forms model - ADF is NOT a Forms clone.  You should be building to the sweet spot of your target technology, not your 20 year old client/server technology.  This is also the chance for the business to embrace change, so maybe look at new processes, channels and technology options that weren't available when you first developed your Forms applications. To help you understand what is involved, I've put together a number of resources. • Server 13.10 Install Hangs

  I'm trying to install Server 13.10 on some old hardware for testing (HP/Compaq dc5850, with Athlon X2 2.3 GHz dual core, 4GB RAM). The third screen is "Select Language" and the machine appears to hang. Ath e selection screen, the keyboard and mouse does not work. I integrity checked the CD and it checked out OK. I also performed a second ISO download and it cross checked with my initial download: $ md5 Desktop/ubuntu-13.10-server-amd64.iso Downloads/ubuntu-13.10-server-amd64.iso MD5 (Desktop/ubuntu-13.10-server-amd64.iso) = 4d1a8b720cdd14b76ed9410c63a00d0e MD5 (Downloads/ubuntu-13.10-server-amd64.iso) = 4d1a8b720cdd14b76ed9410c63a00d0e I was able to install Server 12.04 on the same machine. The problem with 12.04 is the OpenStack packages are too old, and I wanted to try something with fresher packages. My problem appears similar to I cannot install Ubuntu Server 12.10. The Installer hangs at the language selection, but my ISOs appear to be good and the disc appears to be good. Any ideas?

• Strange issue ! Local network cache of PHP and Apache2 on Win Server 2008 R2

  Software configuration : I have a new Server with windows server 2008 R2 installed via VMWare. I have installed Apache2.2, PHP5.2 and MySQL5.5 as separated packages. Issue : On my first installation of my application all works great. When I updated some JS and CSS files then I access to my application again from a PC on local network I get the old JS and CSS versions! But when I access to the same application on local server I got the latest versions of those files! Link of my application on local server is : http://localhost/BADIL Link of my application from local network is : http://LOCAL_SERVER_IP/BADIL I never had this kind of issue! I think that there are some cache but I don't know where! Maybe on Win Server 2008 R2 or on VMWare ! The question is : Why when I access to my application on the server all works fine, but when I access to the same application from a local network I have the old version of JS and CSS files?? Any one can help me please?! Regards.

• How can I generate filesystem images that are usable on many different virtualization systems?

  I have written a script that generates a root filesystem image (based on Debian lenny) suitable for User-Mode Linux. (Essentially this script creates a filesystem image, mounts it with a loop device, uses debootstrap to create a lenny install, sets up a static IP for TUN/TAP networking, adds public keys for login by SSH and installs a web application.) These filesystem images work pretty well with UML, but it would be nice to be able to generate similar images that people can use on alternative virtualization software, and I'm not familiar with these options at all. In particular, since the idea is to use this image as a standalone server for testing the web application, it's important that the networking works. I wonder if anyone can suggest what would be involved in customizing such root filesystem images such that they could be used with other virtualization software, such as VMware, Xen or as an Amazon EC2 instance? Two particular concerns are: If such systems don't use a raw filesystem image (e.g. they need headers with metadata or are compressed in some particular way) do there exist tools to convert between the different formats? I assume that in the filesystem, at least /etc/network/interfaces will have to be customized, but are more involved changes likely to be necessary? Many thanks for any suggestions...
