• For an ORM supporting data validation, should constraints be enforced in the database as well?

  I have always applied constraints at the database level in addition to my (ActiveRecord) models. But I've been wondering if this is really required? A little background I recently had to unit test a basic automated timestamp generation method for a model. Normally, the test would create an instance of the model and save it without validation. But there are other required fields that aren't nullable at the in the table definition, meaning I cant save the instance even if I skip the ActiveRecord validation. So I'm thinking if I should remove such constraints from the db itself, and let the ORM handle them? Possible advantages if I skip constraints in db, imo - Can modify a validation rule in the model, without having to migrate the database. Can skip validation in testing. Possible disadvantage? If its possible that ORM validation fails or is bypassed, howsoever, the database does not check for constraints. What do you think? EDIT In this case, I'm using the Yii Framework, which generates the model from the database, hence database rules are generated also (though I could always write them post-generation myself too).

• Can't get Unity 3D to work in 11.10

  I recently upgraded to 11.10 on my Lenovo ThinkPad T520, and I'm not able to load Unity 3D (I'm not selecting 2D at login menu either). me@mycomp:~$ echo $DESKTOP_SESSION ubuntu-2d I ran the unity support test below as well. me@mycomp:~$ /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0". Error: unable to create the OpenGL context And it looks like I only have one graphics card: me@mycomp:~$ lspci | grep VGA 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09) Also, Ubuntu lists nothing under the "Additional Drivers" window. Any help would be extremely appreciated as I'm somewhat of a noob. Thanks! • Best way to generate pieces in match-3 games, and then tracking them?

  I've been working on a match-3 style game in Actionscript using Flixel, and so far, I've been able to build the core mechanics of the game, including board generation, piece generation, piece swapping and movement, and checking algorithms. However, I am now running into issues with clearing out pieces and letting the above pieces fall down and generating new pieces. The reason I'm running into these issues is that when all of the pieces are generated, the pertinent values (position, sprite ID, and sprite object) are pushed into an array that helps me track everything, all the time. When pieces are moved, I swap the values of the corresponding arrays and life goes on. And that array is the core of my problem: if a row in the middle of the board clears out, ideally, all of the pieces above the cleared pieces should fall down to take their place and new pieces are generated at the top and also fall into place. Except if I try to do that now, all the pieces can fall down, but then I'd have to bump all of their values into the right arrays (oh god my head) and then generate new pieces and fit THOSE into the correct place in the array. Am I overthinking this? Or is there a far better way to track these pieces? Thanks guys!

  I am creating a login usercontrol. I have added the following buttons: Recover Password, Change Password & Edit Profile. I am using DevExpress's ASPxPopupControl to host the functions associated with those three buttons. There are two problems When the popup is opened I need to be able to close/hide it using a command button When a user starts using one of the login controls and chooses to close the dialog the next time the dialog is opened it does not start at the beginning. (e.g. Start the change password dialog, enter some information, close the popup; the information you started with is not cleared) Any ideas?

  Right so i am working with hibernate gilead and gwt to persist my data on users and files of a website. my users have a list of file locations. i am using annotations to map my classes to the database. i am getting a org.hibernate.LazyInitializationException when i try to add file locations to the list that is held in the user class. this is a method below that is overridden from a external file upload servlet class that i am using. when the file uploads it calls this method. the user1 is loaded from the database elsewhere. the exception occurs at user1.getFileLocations().add(fileLocation); • How safe am I singing into Google Spreadsheets with yeroon.net/ggplot2

  I am impressed by what I have seen of yeroon.net/ggplot2 which is a web interface for Hadley Wickham's R package ggplot2. I want to try it out on my own data. The part that has me very excited is that one can use data stored in one's own Google spreadsheet as the data. One just signs into their Google Account so that yeroon.net/ggplot2 can access the spreadsheet list. I have been hesitant to do it. If I sign in whilst on yeroon.net am I handing over my username and password to a third party? It would not be wise of me to divulge my google password to third parties since Google is fast becoming my repository of everything. How do I know if Jeroon's application is using ClientLogin or OAuth? My understanding is very basic and may be wrong but nevertheless here it is. OAuth would be better since it does not actually pass the password onto the third party application.

It's attempting to load in values of username and password to a site but keeps failing and throwing the following error: System.InvalidCastException: Specified cast is not valid. at System.Windows.Forms.UnsafeNativeMethods.IHTMLDocument2.GetLocation() at System.Windows.Forms.WebBrowser.get_Document() at MyWindowsService.MyDataProcessor.login() The code that I'm using to make this call is: MyWebBrowser.Document.All["Login"].SetAttribute("Value", username); MyWebBrowser.Document.All["Password"].SetAttribute("Value", password); MyWebBrowser.Document.All["submit"].InvokeMember("Click"); Any ideas as to why it keeps failing?
