  • PHP: Replace umlauts with closest 7-bit ASCII equivalent in an UTF-8 string

    What I want to do is to remove all accents and umlauts from a string, turning "lärm" into "larm" or "andré" into "andre". What I tried to do was to utf8_decode the string and then use strtr on it, but since my source file is saved as UTF-8 file, I can't enter the ISO-8859-15 characters for all umlauts - the editor inserts the UTF-8 characters.     I have written a program in C# which connects to a POP Server and retrieves raw email message strings from the server using POP3 command RETR. Since the email message being retrieved by the program is in plain text format with all the headers and message body with in the same, its too difficult to extract each header and mail body from the raw string. Could anybody tell me a solution by which I can parse the entire raw text to a System.Net.Mail.MailMessage object?     I'm trying to select records with a statement SELECT * FROM A WHERE LEFT(B, 5) IN (SELECT * FROM (SELECT LEFT(A.B,5), COUNT(DISTINCT A.C) c_count FROM A GROUP BY LEFT(B,5) ) p1 WHERE p1.c_count = 1 ) AND C IN (SELECT * FROM (SELECT A.C , COUNT(DISTINCT LEFT(A.B,5)) b_count FROM A GROUP BY C ) p2 WHERE p2.b_count = 1) which takes a long time to run ~15 sec. Is there a better way of writing this SQL?

  • Activator.CreateInstance(string) and Activator.CreateInstance<T>() difference

    No, this is not a question about generics. I have a Factory pattern with several classes with internal constructors (I don't want them being instantiated if not through the factory). My problem is that CreateInstance fails with a "No parameterless constructor defined for this object" error unless I pass "true" on the non-public parameter. Example // Fails Activator.CreateInstance(type); // Works Activator.CreateInstance(type, true); I wanted to make the factory generic to make it a little simpler, like this: public class GenericFactory<T> where T : MyAbstractType { public static T GetInstance() { return Activator.CreateInstance<T>(); } } However, I was unable to find how to pass that "true" parameter for it to accept non-public constructors (internal). Did I miss something or it isn't possible?

I'm writing a web application that is supposed to connect to a SQL Server database; the connection is formed from the following database string: <add key="DatabaseConnectionString" value="server=DEVPC1\SQLEXPRESS;uid=USERID;pwd=PASSWORD;database=DATABASE"/> However, whenever I try and run the web application, I get a connection error, specifically: An error occurred attempting this login: Login failed for user 'USERID'. Any suggestions on how to go about debugging this? I'm not really familiar with SQL, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • Ruby Methods: how to return an usage string when insufficient arguments are given

    Hi, After I have created a serious bunch of classes (with initialize methods), I am loading these into IRb to test each of them. I do so by creating simple instances and calling their methods to learn their behavior. However sometimes I don't remember exactly what order I was supposed to give the arguments when I call the .new method on the class. It requires me to look back at the code. However, I think it should be easy enough to return a usage message, instead of seeing: ArgumentError: wrong number of arguments (0 for 9) So I prefer to return a string with the human readable arguments, by example using "puts" or just a return of a string. Now I have seen the rescue keyword inside begin-end code, but I wonder how I could catch the ArgumentError when the initialize method is called. Thank you for your answers, feedback and comments!

    I am trying to make a C extension for Ruby that includes a method returning a string, which will sometimes have character values that need to be in an unsigned char. In http://github.com/shyouhei/ruby/blob/trunk/README.EXT, all of the functions listed for turning C strings into Ruby strings take signed chars. So I couldn't do this: unsigned char bytes[] = {0xf0, 0xf1, 0xf2}; return rb_str_new(bytes, 3); How could I make a method that returns these types of strings? In other words, how would I make a C extension with a method returning "\xff"?

  • Best way to manage connection strings in a project containing both Classic ASP and ASP.Net 1.1 code?

    I have a project that I have inherited that is primarily a Classic ASP application; however, intermixed in the the application are a handful of ASP.net pages. Some of the ASP.net pages are 1.1 and do not use a code behind model. The classic ASP pages have a number of /include directories where there's a file for database connections. The ASP.Net pages have the connection string hard coded in in their code. I'm trying to clean up this mess of connection strings so it's easier to manage across development environments. Does anyone have any recommendations on how I may be able to effectively do this that will work for both Classic ASP and ASP.Net pages? Thanks

    I have a column in sqlite3 table. Column has values like 1 ½” 1 ¾” 2 ½” etc. Column has VARCHAR datatype. I am using this code. pref_HoseDiameter = [NSString stringWithUTF8String:(char *)sqlite3_column_text(compiledStatement, 2)]; Now, when I am fetching these values from database, I am getting pref_HoseDiameter string values like this: 1 1/2" 1 3/4" 2 1/2" How to fetch those values as they are in database or how to convert them that look like database values.     I have a problem that seems similar to this fellow - I just want to display the data slightly differently. I'm pretty terrible with SQL so can't modify it to suit, but perhaps someone else can. My table looks similar to this (date format is dd/mm/yyyy): ID User Date_start Role 1 Andy 01/04/2010 A 2 Andy 10/04/2010 B 3 Andy 20/04/2010 A 4 John 02/05/2010 A I want to show the total number of days that anyone was in a certain role. Users stay in the role until there is another entry into the table. Users can only be in one role at a time. So the summary data would look like this (assuming that the date is 04/05/2010): A: 26 days B: 10 days Thanks for any help :)

    Can someone please explain this: SELECT CASE WHEN CAST('iX' AS nvarchar(20)) > CAST('-X' AS nvarchar(20)) THEN 1 ELSE 0 END, CASE WHEN CAST('iX' AS varchar(20)) > CAST('-X' AS varchar(20)) THEN 1 ELSE 0 END Results: 0 1 SELECT CASE WHEN CAST('i' AS nvarchar(20)) > CAST('-' AS nvarchar(20)) THEN 1 ELSE 0 END, CASE WHEN CAST('i' AS varchar(20)) > CAST('-' AS varchar(20)) THEN 1 ELSE 0 END Results: 1 1 On the first query, the nvarchar() result is not what I'm expecting, and yet removing the X make the nvarchar() sort happen as expected. (My original queries used the '' and N'' literal syntax to distinguish varchar() and nvarchar() rather than CAST() and got the same result.) Collation setting for the database is SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS.

    Hi there, I currently started to "port" my console projects to WinForms, but it seems I am badly failing doing that. I am simply used to a console structure: I got my classes interacting with each other depending on the input coming from the console. A simple flow: Input -> ProcessInput -> Execute -> Output -> wait for input Now I got this big Form1.cs (etc.) and the "Application.Run(Form1);" But I really got no clue how my classes can interact with the form and create a flow like I described above. I mean, I just have these "...._Click(object sender....)" for each "item" inside the form.
