  • What's wrong with how I'm using NSDateFormatter?

    - by Thom Mahoney
dateFormatter = [[NSDateFormatter alloc] init]; dateFormatter.locale = [[[NSLocale alloc] initWithLocaleIdentifier:@"en_US"] autorelease]; [dateFormatter setDateFormat:@"EEE, d MMM yyyy HH:mm:ss zzz"]; NSString dateString = @"Tue, 08 Jun 2010 17:00:00 EDT"; NSDate eventDate = [dateFormatter dateFromString:dateString]; In this case the eventDate object is nil. Can somebody clue me in? This code used to work.

  • Django - markup parser in template or view?

    - by Amit Ron
I am building a website where my pages are written in MediaWiki Markup, for which I have a working parser function in Python. Where exactly do I parse my markup: in the view's code, or in the template? My first guess would be something like: return render_to_response( 'blog/post.html', {'post': post, 'content': parseMyMarkup(post.content) }) Is this the usual convention, or should I do something different?

  • New functional languages

    - by AnnaR
Functional programming has been around since at least 1958 (creation of Lisp), but is experiencing a renaissance now with old functional languages being dusted off and new functional languages being created. Which functional languages are there that are newly developed or are in the making? I realize that you can write purely functional programs in most high level languages, so with functional languages I imply languages that are specifically designed for functional programming such as F#. If you have links to tutorials, wikis or code examples I encourage you to add them to your answer!

  • How do I catch the error from my printer with PrintDocument?

    - by Scottie
    I am using the PrintDocument class to print to my Brother label printer. When I execute the Print() method, the printer starts flashing a red error light, but everything else returns successful. I can run this same code on my laser printer and everything works fine. How can I see what is causing the error on my label printer? Code: public class Test { private Font printFont; private List<string> _documentLinesToPrint = new List<string>(); public void Run() { _documentLinesToPrint.Add("Test1"); _documentLinesToPrint.Add("Test2"); printFont = new Font("Arial", 10); var pd = new PrintDocument(); pd.DefaultPageSettings.Margins = new Margins(25, 25, 25, 25); pd.DefaultPageSettings.PaperSize = new PaperSize("Label", 400, 237); var printerSettings = new System.Drawing.Printing.PrinterSettings(); printerSettings.PrinterName ="Brother QL-570 LE"; pd.PrinterSettings = printerSettings; pd.PrinterSettings.Copies = 1; pd.PrintPage += new PrintPageEventHandler(this.pd_PrintPage); pd.Print(); } // The PrintPage event is raised for each page to be printed. private void pd_PrintPage(object sender, PrintPageEventArgs ev) { float linesPerPage = 0; float yPos = 0; int count = 0; float leftMargin = ev.MarginBounds.Left; float topMargin = ev.MarginBounds.Top; string line = null; // Calculate the number of lines per page. linesPerPage = ev.MarginBounds.Height / printFont.GetHeight(ev.Graphics); // Print each line of the file. while ((count < linesPerPage) && (count < _documentLinesToPrint.Count)) { line = _documentLinesToPrint[count]; yPos = topMargin + (count * printFont.GetHeight(ev.Graphics)); ev.Graphics.DrawString(line, printFont, Brushes.Black, leftMargin, yPos, new StringFormat()); line = null; count++; } // If more lines exist, print another page. if (line != null) ev.HasMorePages = true; else ev.HasMorePages = false; } }

  • How to fire server-side methods with jQuery

    - by Nasser Hajloo
I have a large application and I'm going to enabling short-cut key for it. I'd find 2 JQuery plug-ins (demo plug-in 1 - Demo plug-in 2) that do this for me. you can find both of them in this post in StackOverFlow My application is a completed one and I'm goining to add some functionality to it so I don't want towrite code again. So as a short-cut is just catching a key combination, I'm wonder how can I call the server methods which a short-cut key should fire? So How to use either of these plug-ins, by just calling the methods I'd written before? Actually How to fire Server methods with Jquery? You can also find a good article here, by Dave Ward Update: here is the scenario. When User press CTRL+Del the GridView1_OnDeleteCommand so I have this protected void grdDocumentRows_DeleteCommand(object source, System.Web.UI.WebControls.DataGridCommandEventArgs e) { try { DeleteRow(grdDocumentRows.DataKeys[e.Item.ItemIndex].ToString()); clearControls(); cmdSaveTrans.Text = Hajloo.Portal.Common.Constants.Accounting.Documents.InsertClickText; btnDelete.Visible = false; grdDocumentRows.EditItemIndex = -1; BindGrid(); } catch (Exception ex) { Page.AddMessage(GetLocalResourceObject("AProblemAccuredTryAgain").ToString(), MessageControl.TypeEnum.Error); } } private void BindGrid() { RefreshPage(); grdDocumentRows.DataSource = ((DataSet)Session[Hajloo.Portal.Common.Constants.Accounting.Session.AccDocument]).Tables[AccDocument.TRANSACTIONS_TABLE]; grdDocumentRows.DataBind(); } private void RefreshPage() { Creditors = (decimal)((AccDocument)Session[Hajloo.Portal.Common.Constants.Accounting.Session.AccDocument]).Tables[AccDocument.ACCDOCUMENT_TABLE].Rows[0][AccDocument.ACCDOCUMENT_CREDITORS_SUM_FIELD]; Debtors = (decimal)((AccDocument)Session[Hajloo.Portal.Common.Constants.Accounting.Session.AccDocument]).Tables[AccDocument.ACCDOCUMENT_TABLE].Rows[0][AccDocument.ACCDOCUMENT_DEBTORS_SUM_FIELD]; if ((Creditors - Debtors) != 0) labBalance.InnerText = GetLocalResourceObject("Differentiate").ToString() + "?" + (Creditors - Debtors).ToString(Hajloo.Portal.Common.Constants.Common.Documents.CF) + "?"; else labBalance.InnerText = GetLocalResourceObject("Balance").ToString(); lblSumDebit.Text = Debtors.ToString(Hajloo.Portal.Common.Constants.Common.Documents.CF); lblSumCredit.Text = Creditors.ToString(Hajloo.Portal.Common.Constants.Common.Documents.CF); if (grdDocumentRows.EditItemIndex == -1) clearControls(); } Th other scenario are the same. How to enable short-cut for these kind of code (using session , NHibernate, etc)

  • input type="text" not clickable in a jcarousel (jQuery based carousel) element

    - by AkaiKen
    Hello ! I work on a website where almost all objects are in a jCarousel element : <div> <ul id="mycarousel"> <li>object 1</li> <li>object 2</li> </ul> </div> is the "written" code, and : <div class=" jcarousel-skin-tango"> <div class="jcarousel-container jcarousel-container-horizontal" style="display: block;"> <div class="jcarousel-prev jcarousel-prev-horizontal jcarousel-prev-disabled jcarousel-prev-disabled-horizontal" style="display: block;" disabled="true"></div> <div class="jcarousel-next jcarousel-next-horizontal" style="display: block;" disabled="false"></div> <div class="jcarousel-clip jcarousel-clip-horizontal"> <ul class=" jcarousel-list jcarousel-list-horizontal" id="mycarousel" style="width: 2853px; left: 0px;"> <li class="jcarousel-item jcarousel-item-horizontal jcarousel-item-1 jcarousel-item-1-horizontal" jcarouselindex="1" style="width: 307px;"> object 1 </li> <li class="jcarousel-item jcarousel-item-horizontal jcarousel-item-1 jcarousel-item-1-horizontal" jcarouselindex="1" style="width: 307px;"> object 2 </li> </ul> </div> </div> is the generated code (here it lacks the ultimate </div>, maybe a number of rows limitation ?). I'm sorry I can't provide a link, I work on a local server currently. It works perfectly =) but... my problem is : an <input type="text" /> won't be clickable in this environment. I tried the others type of input, radio, checkbox, file : works. But text does not. I can specify a value on my input (it's its purpose on my work : a search in a database for datas to be modified and reinjected in database). In fact, I can access to the text input by clicking-right in then left. But it's pretty 'unergonomic', and in my project it's unthinkable. Ah, and I tried to style this input with a style="z-index:1000;", no changes, I think it's not a CSS problem. Does anybody have an idea ? Thank you very much in advance.

  • Putting update logic in your migrations

    - by Daniel Abrahamsson
A couple of times I've been in the situation where I've wanted to refactor the design of some model and have ended up putting update logic in migrations. However, as far as I've understood, this is not good practice (especially since you are encouraged to use your schema file for deployment, and not your migrations). How do you deal with these kind of problems? To clearify what I mean, say I have a User model. Since I thought there would only be two kinds of users, namely a "normal" user and an administrator, I chose to use a simple boolean field telling whether the user was an adminstrator or not. However, after I while I figured I needed some third kind of user, perhaps a moderator or something similar. In this case I add a UserType model (and the corresponding migration), and a second migration for removing the "admin" flag from the user table. And here comes the problem. In the "add_user_type_to_users" migration I have to map the admin flag value to a user type. Additionally, in order to do this, the user types have to exist, meaning I can not use the seeds file, but rather create the user types in the migration (also considered bad practice). Here comes some fictional code representing the situation: class CreateUserTypes < ActiveRecord::Migration def self.up create_table :user_types do |t| t.string :name, :nil => false, :unique => true end #Create basic types (can not put in seed, because of future migration dependency) UserType.create!(:name => "BASIC") UserType.create!(:name => "MODERATOR") UserType.create!(:name => "ADMINISTRATOR") end def self.down drop_table :user_types end end class AddTypeIdToUsers < ActiveRecord::Migration def self.up add_column :users, :type_id, :integer #Determine type via the admin flag basic = UserType.find_by_name("BASIC") admin = UserType.find_by_name("ADMINISTRATOR") User.all.each {|u| u.update_attribute(:type_id, (u.admin?) ? admin.id : basic.id)} #Remove the admin flag remove_column :users, :admin #Add foreign key execute "alter table users add constraint fk_user_type_id foreign key (type_id) references user_types (id)" end def self.down #Re-add the admin flag add_column :users, :admin, :boolean, :default => false #Reset the admin flag (this is the problematic update code) admin = UserType.find_by_name("ADMINISTRATOR") execute "update users set admin=true where type_id=#{admin.id}" #Remove foreign key constraint execute "alter table users drop foreign key fk_user_type_id" #Drop the type_id column remove_column :users, :type_id end end As you can see there are two problematic parts. First the row creation part in the first model, which is necessary if I would like to run all migrations in a row, then the "update" part in the second migration that maps the "admin" column to the "type_id" column. Any advice?

  • Decompressing a very large serialized object and managing memory

    - by Mike_G
I have an object that contains tons of data used for reports. In order to get this object from the server to the client I first serialize the object in a memory stream, then compress it using the Gzip stream of .NET. I then send the compressed object as a byte[] to the client. The problem is on some clients, when they get the byte[] and try to decompress and deserialize the object, a System.OutOfMemory exception is thrown. Ive read that this exception can be caused by new() a bunch of objects, or holding on to a bunch of strings. Both of these are happening during the deserialization process. So my question is: How do I prevent the exception (any good strategies)? The client needs all of the data, and ive trimmed down the number of strings as much as i can. edit: here is the code i am using to serialize/compress (implemented as extension methods) public static byte[] SerializeObject<T>(this object obj, T serializer) where T: XmlObjectSerializer { Type t = obj.GetType(); if (!Attribute.IsDefined(t, typeof(DataContractAttribute))) return null; byte[] initialBytes; using (MemoryStream stream = new MemoryStream()) { serializer.WriteObject(stream, obj); initialBytes = stream.ToArray(); } return initialBytes; } public static byte[] CompressObject<T>(this object obj, T serializer) where T : XmlObjectSerializer { Type t = obj.GetType(); if(!Attribute.IsDefined(t, typeof(DataContractAttribute))) return null; byte[] initialBytes = obj.SerializeObject(serializer); byte[] compressedBytes; using (MemoryStream stream = new MemoryStream(initialBytes)) { using (MemoryStream output = new MemoryStream()) { using (GZipStream zipper = new GZipStream(output, CompressionMode.Compress)) { Pump(stream, zipper); } compressedBytes = output.ToArray(); } } return compressedBytes; } internal static void Pump(Stream input, Stream output) { byte[] bytes = new byte[4096]; int n; while ((n = input.Read(bytes, 0, bytes.Length)) != 0) { output.Write(bytes, 0, n); } } And here is my code for decompress/deserialize: public static T DeSerializeObject<T,TU>(this byte[] serializedObject, TU deserializer) where TU: XmlObjectSerializer { using (MemoryStream stream = new MemoryStream(serializedObject)) { return (T)deserializer.ReadObject(stream); } } public static T DecompressObject<T, TU>(this byte[] compressedBytes, TU deserializer) where TU: XmlObjectSerializer { byte[] decompressedBytes; using(MemoryStream stream = new MemoryStream(compressedBytes)) { using(MemoryStream output = new MemoryStream()) { using(GZipStream zipper = new GZipStream(stream, CompressionMode.Decompress)) { ObjectExtensions.Pump(zipper, output); } decompressedBytes = output.ToArray(); } } return decompressedBytes.DeSerializeObject<T, TU>(deserializer); } The object that I am passing is a wrapper object, it just contains all the relevant objects that hold the data. The number of objects can be a lot (depending on the reports date range), but ive seen as many as 25k strings. One thing i did forget to mention is I am using WCF, and since the inner objects are passed individually through other WCF calls, I am using the DataContract serializer, and all my objects are marked with the DataContract attribute.

  • Use msbuild community tasks without installing

    - by mickyjtwin
In our developer environment, no users have administration rights. As such, it's not possible to install MSBuild.CommunityTasks without getting admin to do so. What I'm wondering is similar to NAnt, i.e. is it possible to include the files in your solution directory, and just reference it from there? This way, will not matter if the person has it installed, when they checkout latest code, the msbuild community files will come with, and solution will build. \SolutionDir\{solution}.sln \SolutionDir\Project\{files} \SolutionDir\MSBuild.Community\files

  • C# Finalize/Dispose pattern

    - by robUK
Hello, C# 2008 I have been working on this for a while now. And I am still confused about some issues. My questions below 1) I know that you only need a finalizer if you are disposing of unmanaged resources. However, if you are using managed resources that make calls to unmanaged resources. Would you still need to implement a finalizer? 2) However, if you develop a class that doesn't use any unmanged resources directly or indirectly and you implement the IDisposable so that clients of your class can use the 'using statement'. Would it be acceptable to implement the IDisposable just so that clients of your class can use the using statement? using(myClass objClass = new myClass()) { // Do stuff here } 3) I have developed this simple code below to demostrate the Finalize/dispose pattern: public class NoGateway : IDisposable { private WebClient wc = null; public NoGateway() { wc = new WebClient(); wc.DownloadStringCompleted += wc_DownloadStringCompleted; } // Start the Async call to find if NoGateway is true or false public void NoGatewayStatus() { // Start the Async's download // Do other work here wc.DownloadStringAsync(new Uri(www.xxxx.xxx)); } private void wc_DownloadStringCompleted(object sender, DownloadStringCompletedEventArgs e) { // Do work here } // Dispose of the NoGateway object public void Dispose() { wc.DownloadStringCompleted -= wc_DownloadStringCompleted; wc.Dispose(); GC.SuppressFinalize(this); } } Question about the source code: 1) Here I have not added the finalizer. And normally the finalizer will be called by the GC, and the finalizer will call the Dispose. As I don't have the finalizer, when do I call the Dispose method? Is it the client of the class that has to call it? So my class in the example is called NoGateway and the client could use and dispose of the class like this: Would the Dispose method be automatically called when execution reaches the end of the using block? using(NoGateway objNoGateway = new NoGateway()) { // Do stuff here } Or does the client have to manually call the dispose method i.e.? NoGateway objNoGateway = new NoGateway(); // Do stuff with object objNoGateway.Dispose(); // finished with it Many thanks for helping with all these questions, 2) I am using the webclient class in my 'NoGateway' class. Because the webclient implements the IDisposable interface. Does this mean that the webclient indirectly uses unmanaged resources? Is there any hard and fast rule to follow about this. How do I know that a class uses unmanaged resources?

  • WP7 silverlight custom control using popup

    - by Miloud B.
Hi guys, I'm creating a custom datepicker, I have a textbox, once clicked it opens a calendar within a popup. What I want to do is change the size of the popup so it shows my whole calendar, but I can't manage to change it..., I've tried using Height, Width, MinHeight, MinWidth... but it doesn't work, the popup keep showing with a fixed size. The thing is that my popup's parent property isn't evaluated since it has expression issues (according to debugger), so I'm sure my popup's parent isn't the main screen( say layout grid). How can I for example make my popup open within a specific context ? This part of my code isn't XAML, it's C# code only and it looks like: using System; using System.Net; using System.Windows; using System.Windows.Controls; using System.Windows.Documents; using System.Windows.Ink; using System.Windows.Input; using System.Windows.Media; using System.Windows.Media.Animation; using System.Windows.Shapes; using System.Windows.Controls.Primitives; namespace CalendarBranch.components { public class wpDatePicker:TextBox { private CalendarPopup calendar; private Popup popup; public wpDatePicker() { this.calendar = new CalendarPopup(); this.popup = new Popup(); this.popup.Child = this.calendar; this.popup.Margin = new Thickness(0); this.MouseLeftButtonUp += new MouseButtonEventHandler(wpDatePicker_MouseLeftButtonUp); this.calendar.onDateSelect += new EventHandler(onDateSelected); this.IsReadOnly = true; } protected void wpDatePicker_MouseLeftButtonUp(object sender, MouseButtonEventArgs e) { this.popup.Height = this.calendar.Height; this.popup.Width = this.calendar.Width; this.popup.HorizontalAlignment = HorizontalAlignment.Center; this.popup.VerticalAlignment = VerticalAlignment.Center; this.popup.HorizontalOffset = 0; this.popup.VerticalOffset = 0; this.popup.MinHeight = this.calendar.Height; this.popup.MinWidth = this.calendar.Width; this.popup.IsOpen = true; } private void onDateSelected(Object sender, EventArgs ea) { this.Text = this.calendar.SelectedValue.ToShortDateString(); this.popup.IsOpen = false; } } } PS: the class Calendar is simply a UserControl that contains a grid with multiple columns, HyperLinkButtons and TextBlocks, so nothing special. Thank you in advance guys ;) Cheers Miloud B.

I'd like to implement a custom command to capture a Backspace key gesture inside of a textbox, but I don't know how. I wrote a test program in order to understand what's going on, but the behaviour of the program is rather confusing. Basically, I just need to be able to handle the Backspace key gesture via wpf commands while keyboard focus is in the textbox, and without disrupting the normal behaviour of the Backspace key within the textbox. Here's the xaml for the main window and the corresponding code-behind, too (note that I created a second command for the Enter key, just to compare its behaviour to that of the Backspace key): <Window x:Class="WpfApplication1.Window1" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" Title="Window1" Height="300" Width="300"> <Grid> <TextBox Margin="44,54,44,128" Name="textBox1" /> </Grid> </Window> And here's the corresponding code-behind: using System.Windows; using System.Windows.Input; namespace WpfApplication1 { /// <summary> /// Interaction logic for EntryListView.xaml /// </summary> public partial class Window1 : Window { public static RoutedCommand EnterCommand = new RoutedCommand(); public static RoutedCommand BackspaceCommand = new RoutedCommand(); public Window1() { InitializeComponent(); CommandBinding cb1 = new CommandBinding(EnterCommand, EnterExecuted, EnterCanExecute); CommandBinding cb2 = new CommandBinding(BackspaceCommand, BackspaceExecuted, BackspaceCanExecute); this.CommandBindings.Add(cb1); this.CommandBindings.Add(cb2); KeyGesture kg1 = new KeyGesture(Key.Enter); KeyGesture kg2 = new KeyGesture(Key.Back); InputBinding ib1 = new InputBinding(EnterCommand, kg1); InputBinding ib2 = new InputBinding(BackspaceCommand, kg2); this.InputBindings.Add(ib1); this.InputBindings.Add(ib2); } #region Command Handlers private void EnterCanExecute(object sender, CanExecuteRoutedEventArgs e) { MessageBox.Show("Inside EnterCanExecute Method."); e.CanExecute = true; } private void EnterExecuted(object sender, ExecutedRoutedEventArgs e) { MessageBox.Show("Inside EnterExecuted Method."); e.Handled = true; } private void BackspaceCanExecute(object sender, CanExecuteRoutedEventArgs e) { MessageBox.Show("Inside BackspaceCanExecute Method."); e.Handled = true; } private void BackspaceExecuted(object sender, ExecutedRoutedEventArgs e) { MessageBox.Show("Inside BackspaceExecuted Method."); e.Handled = true; } #endregion Command Handlers } } Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks! Andrew
