For example, imagine that I want to see if a user exists in my database:
Select * from Users where inputID = Users.ID
Then if that result brought 0 items, then the user exists, correct?
How can I do something like this using a pure Linq-to-SQL class?
I got visual studio 2005 express edition installed on my machine. But it did not contain any C# or web developer with it. So i later installed visual C# too. Now , I can create a C# project through visual C#. But I cant use visual studio for the same purpose. I guess there would be some mechanism to integrate visual C# with visual studio. Can anyone help me out?
I use SQL Server 2000.
Suppose I have two tables like the following:
Area
----------------------------------
ID| Name | HierarchyLevel
----------------------------------
1 | World | 1
2 | America| 2
3 | Europe | 2
4 | Africa | 2
5 | USA | 3
and
AreaHierarchy
------------------------
ID | ParentID | ChildID
------------------------
1 | 1 | 2
2 | 1 | 3
3 | 1 | 4
4 | 2 | 5
where
AreaHierarchy.ParentID and AreaHierarchy.ChildID are FKs of Area.ID
How can I find the nth parent of USA?
Is it possible without looping?
Probably not.

I am storing images in a SQL database , right now I have images being stored in separate tables depending on the object the images belong to, is there any reason ( performance etc..) why I should keep it this way and not store all images in the same table?

What is the error?
In SQL Server, it is possible to test the result of a stored procedure to know if the result return rows or nothing ?
Example :
EXEC _sp_MySp 1, 2, 3
IF @@ROWCOUNT = 0
BEGIN
PRINT('Empty')
END
ELSE
BEGIN
PRINT(@@ROWCOUNT)
END
But @@ROWCOUNT always return 0 so maybe is there another way of doing this ?

With windows and sql server accounts, I can access the logged in user with functions like: user_name() or suser_sname().

In PostgreSQL there is the Limit and Offset keywords which will allow very easy pagination of result sets. What is the equivalent syntax for Sql Server?
i am doing this:
CREATE TABLE person
(
num INT NOT NULL ,
firstname VARCHAR(20) NULL ,
lastname VARCHAR(30) NULL
);
sql server is just saying "debbuging" and it's not doing anything
is there a problem with the syntax or what?
I'm using Crystal Report with VB.NET in Visual Studio 2005.
I have report that works if I pass in a list of List(Of Stuff). I had been sorting the report by one of the members of Stuff but a need now to sort first by one member, like Stuff.StatusCode and then by another member, like Stuff.ItemNumber.
Can I do this just be having more than one SortField member, or do I need to do it some other way?
Thanks as always!
Every time I view a form or dialog in Visual Studio (2005) the Properties and Toolbox panes show up on the right side of my screen. That's good to have because they are useful for manipulating dialogs.
However once I switch back to source code these panes just get in the way... is there a way to get them to go away automatically?
Whenever a single page report is exported to excel, sheet in excel is named by the report name.
If a report has multiple pages, the sheets are named as sheet1, sheet2,....
Is there any way to specify sheet names in SSRS 2005 ?
solution:
Found this after some googleing:
Changing the Sheet names in SQL Server RS Excel: QnD XSLT
Will try out and post an update if it works.

Hello Guys!
I've two MS SQL tables: Category, Question. Each Question is assigned to exactly one Category. One Category may have many subcategories.
Category
Id : bigint (PK)
Name : nvarchar(255)
AcceptQuestions : bit
IdParent : bigint (FK)
Question
Id : bigint (PK)
Title : nvarchar(255)
...
IdCategory : bigint (FK)
How do I recursively count all Questions for a given Category (including questions in subcategories). I've tried it already based on several tutorials but still can't figure it out :(

Hello everyone,
I am using SQL Server 2008 Enterprise and using the new Merge statement. From my experiment, I find source is always read only (table content not modified, i.e. no record is deleted/inserted/updated)? Is that correct understanding?
thanks in advance,
George

Not sure what's happening with this, but here's my question. I have a Sql Server 2008 database that I need to be able to do full-text indexing/searching but when I try to setup my indices on the table, I get the following:
I've tried running this stored procedure on my database and it's successful:
EXEC sp_fulltext_database @action = 'enable'
But I still get the above window and my full-text searches don't return any results when they should.
What am I missing?
