  • Re-using unit tests for models using STI

    I have a number of models that use STI and I would like to use the same unit test to test each model. For example, I have: class RegularList < List class OtherList < List class ListTest < ActiveSupport::TestCase fixtures :lists def test_word_count list = lists(:regular_list) assert_equal(0, list.count) end end How would I go about using the test_word_count test for the OtherList model. The test is much longer so I would rather not have to retype it for each model. Thanks.

  • Mocking inter-method dependencies

    I've recently started using mock objects in my tests, but I'm still very inexperienced with them and unsure of how to use them in some cases. At the moment I'm struggling with how to mock inter-method dependencies (calling method A has an effect on the results of method B), and whether it should even be mocked (in the sense of using a mocking framework) at all? Take for example a Java Iterator? It is easy enough to mock the next() call to return the correct values, but how do I mock hasNext(), which depends on how many times next() has been called? Currently I'm using a List.Iterator as I could find no way to properly mock one. Does Martin Fowler's distinction between mocks and stubs come into play here? Should I rather write my own IteratorMock? Also consider the following example. The method to be tested calls mockObject.setX() and later on mockObject.getX(). Is there any way that I can create such a mock (without writing my own) which will allow the returned value of getX to depend on what was passed to setX?

    I've created a unit test that tests interactions on my ViewModel class in a Silverlight application. To be able to do this test, I'm mocking the service interface, injected to the ViewModel. Is there a better way to do this, while preserving correct AAA order?

  • Why can't I use the return from an insertAfter as a regular jQuery object?

    I'm trying to insert a link after form elements to clear them. This demo code with headings doesn't work: h2 = $('h2'); clickytest = $('click me').insertAfter(h2).click(function() { $(this).append('foo'); }); But this does: clickytest = $('click me').insertAfter(h2); $('a.clicky').click(function() { $(this).append('foo'); }); The only difference is I've gone back and re-selected the new elements, rather than use what insertAfter returns. If on the other hand there is only one H2 in the whole document, then the first version works. What's going on? I've tried playing with each() but I'm not sure exactly what jQuery is doing here.

    Does anybody know how to connect with JBoss4.0.5GA in Seam2.2.0GA unit test? I'm using Seam2.2.0GA with the embeded JBoss to run the unit test, the module needs to call old JBoss server (EJB2, because the vendor locked in JCA has to deploy on old JBoss). it's typical seam test case, and I can't get it connect to JBoss4.0.5GA by using jbossall-client.jar from JBoss4.0.5GA. so far I tested the embeded JBoss can only working with JBoss5.X server. with JBoss4.2.3GA, it report: [testng] java.rmi.MarshalException: Failed to communicate.   • How to test an application for correct encoding (e.g. UTF-8)

    Encoding issues are among the one topic that have bitten me most often during development. Every platform insists on its own encoding, most likely some non-UTF-8 defaults are in the game. (I'm usually working on Linux, defaulting to UTF-8, my colleagues mostly work on german Windows, defaulting to ISO-8859-1 or some similar windows codepage) I believe, that UTF-8 is a suitable standard for developing an i18nable application. However, in my experience encoding bugs are usually discovered late (even though I'm located in Germany and we have some special characters that along with ISO-8859-1 provide some detectable differences). I believe that those developers with a completely non-ASCII character set (or those that know a language that uses such a character set) are getting a head start in providing test data. But there must be a way to ease this for the rest of us as well. What [technique|tool|incentive] are people here using? How do you get your co-developers to care for these issues? How do you test for compliance? Are those tests conducted manually or automatically? Adding one possible answer upfront: I've recently discovered fliptitle.com (they are providing an easy way to get weird characters written "u?op ?pisdn" *) and I'm planning on using them to provide easily verifiable UTF-8 character strings (as most of the characters used there are at some weird binary encoding position) but there surely must be more systematic tests, patterns or techniques for ensuring UTF-8 compatibility/usage. Note: Even though there's an accepted answer, I'd like to know of more techniques and patterns if there are some. Please add more answers if you have more ideas. And it has not been easy choosing only one answer for acceptance. I've chosen the regexp answer for the least expected angle to tackle the problem although there would be reasons to choose other answers as well. Too bad only one answer can be accepted. Suppose the user enters "in", I want the jqueryui to list countries like 'india', 'indonesia' which start with 'in', but it also lists the countries which have 'in' somewhere in the name (like: argentina).     Hello, I would like to write some unit test with a logged user using Authlogic. To start right, I used some code hosted in http://github.com/binarylogic/authlogic_example. But I get an error after rake test, because of "test_helper.rb" and the following class: class ActionController::TestCase setup :activate_authlogic end Here is my error: NameError: undefined local variable or method `activate_authlogic' for I think this Authlogic example is mapped over Rails 2; maybe it's a little bit different on Rails 3.   • Jquery tabs and forms

    Hi, this may be a weird problem but I’m not sure the best way to go about it.. I am using JQuery ajax tabs. The tab section is dynamic so multiple tabs can be added, as the content is loaded via Ajax the same content can be loaded into different tabs. The other important detail is that i am using the Cache option so the tabs maintain state. Now problems arise when more than one tab has been loaded. It looks like HTML items such as forms and divs now have duplicated id's within the DOM, so Ajax queries can no longer distinguish between the elements.. The result is that any JavaScript/Ajax breaks. Does anyone have any suggestions for way to tackle such a problem? Thanks in advance..

  • HTML overlay height to cover entire visible page

    I have a web page that loads some stuff using AJAX. I want to display an overlay with a loading indicator while the loading is in progress, so that the user cannot interact with most of the page - except the menu at the top. I'm using jQuery and the jQuery BlockUI plugin to do this. I call $(element).block() and it works fine, but the overlay only extends as far down as the current content of my page. As more content is loaded and added to the page the overlay moves down with it and this looks a bit ugly. Ideally I'd like it to cover the entire visible area of the page right from the start. A simple hack for doing this would be to set a large height value for the overlay, like this: $(myElement).block({ overlayCSS: { height: '10000px' } }); ... but this creates a scrollbar! How do I avoid this and make it just the right height to cover the visible page, but not enlarge it?

    I am doing my first steps with TDD. The problem is (as probably with everyone starting with TDD), I never know very well what kind of unit tests to do when I start working in my projects. Let's assume I want to write a Stack class with the following methods(I choose it as it's an easy example): Stack<T> - Push(element : T) - Pop() : T - Seek() : T - Count : int - IsEmpty : boolean How would you approch this? I never understood if the idea is to test a few corner cases for each method of the Stack class or start by doing a few "use cases" with the class, like adding 10 elements and removing them. What is the idea? To make code that uses the Stack as close as possible to what I'll use in my real code? Or just make simple "add one element" unit tests where I test if IsEmpty and Count were changed by adding that element? How am I supposed to start with this?

  • How to set up Flex Unit 4

    Does anyone know of any guides or any sort of documentation on how to set up the new Flex Builder 4 beta? I've been pulling my hair all day long, none of my tests are executed and I can't for the life of me understand what's wrong. There are no errors at all. It's as if the metadata tags are not recognized, is there some special compiler argument to recognize them? I seem to remember that this is not necessary as long as the swc files that are included were compiled with said arguments. I'm using Beta 1 of Flex Unit 4 which can be found here: http://opensource.adobe.com/wiki/display/flexunit/FlexUnit+4+feature+overview I'm actually using the very same code that is included with that package to run the tests, but no tests are executed. Neither mine nor the ones included in the FU4 package. The lack of documentation certainly doesn't help much...

  • Should tests be self written in TDD?

    We run a project, which we want to solve with test driven development. I thought about some questions that came up, when initiating the project. One question was, who should write the unit-test for a feature. Should the unit-test be written by the feature-implementing programmer? Or should the unit test be written by another programmer, who defines what a method should do and the feature-implementing programmer implements the method until the tests runs? If i understand the concept of TDD in the right way. The feature-implementing programmer has to write the test by himself, because TDD is procedure with mini-iterations. So it would be too complex to have the tests written by another programmer? What would you say, should the tests in TDD written by the programmer himself or should another programmer write the tests that describes what a method can do?
