  • How to test an application for correct encoding (e.g. UTF-8)

    Encoding issues are among the one topic that have bitten me most often during development. Every platform insists on its own encoding, most likely some non-UTF-8 defaults are in the game. (I'm usually working on Linux, defaulting to UTF-8, my colleagues mostly work on german Windows, defaulting to ISO-8859-1 or some similar windows codepage) I believe, that UTF-8 is a suitable standard for developing an i18nable application. However, in my experience encoding bugs are usually discovered late (even though I'm located in Germany and we have some special characters that along with ISO-8859-1 provide some detectable differences). I believe that those developers with a completely non-ASCII character set (or those that know a language that uses such a character set) are getting a head start in providing test data. But there must be a way to ease this for the rest of us as well. What [technique|tool|incentive] are people here using? How do you get your co-developers to care for these issues? How do you test for compliance? Are those tests conducted manually or automatically? Adding one possible answer upfront: I've recently discovered fliptitle.com (they are providing an easy way to get weird characters written "u?op ?pisdn" *) and I'm planning on using them to provide easily verifiable UTF-8 character strings (as most of the characters used there are at some weird binary encoding position) but there surely must be more systematic tests, patterns or techniques for ensuring UTF-8 compatibility/usage. Note: Even though there's an accepted answer, I'd like to know of more techniques and patterns if there are some. Please add more answers if you have more ideas. And it has not been easy choosing only one answer for acceptance. I've chosen the regexp answer for the least expected angle to tackle the problem although there would be reasons to choose other answers as well. Too bad only one answer can be accepted.   • Unit test with Authlogic on Rails 3

    Hello, I would like to write some unit test with a logged user using Authlogic. To start right, I used some code hosted in http://github.com/binarylogic/authlogic_example. But I get an error after rake test, because of "test_helper.rb" and the following class: class ActionController::TestCase setup :activate_authlogic end Here is my error: NameError: undefined local variable or method `activate_authlogic' for I think this Authlogic example is mapped over Rails 2; maybe it's a little bit different on Rails 3. Is there an other example where I can take example about unit test? Many thanks.

  • Getting HTTP 406 when trying to test facebooker application with cucumber

    I am trying to test facebook api calls with cucumber. This happens in the cucumber test environment only and not in the browser(development/production).

  • Explaining the need to avoid horizontal scroll

    I need help explaining to my boss why her design is poor on a client's website. She has no knowledge of the web, and it can be difficult as a web developer working with a woman who is a graphic designer (not even a web designer really). On a current site she has designed, an image bar "needs" to be ~1200px according to her, though it isn't necessary with the content. A quick sketch to illustrate what's going on: As you see, the banner spills out past the 960px of the content and as wide as 1200px. This creates a horizontal scroll when all the content is viewable within the 960px wide viewport. I need to make this an <img and not a CSS background because it's a jQuery slideshow that fades from image to image. I think this is a big problem because a lot of people are going to get a horizontal scroll bar imposed in their browser when they're still able to see all the relevant content. She thinks no one will notice and it'll be fine; I think it's very bad practice and confusing to the end user. How do I explain the problem to her?

  • Jquery tabs and forms

    Hi, this may be a weird problem but I’m not sure the best way to go about it.. I am using JQuery ajax tabs. The tab section is dynamic so multiple tabs can be added, as the content is loaded via Ajax the same content can be loaded into different tabs. The other important detail is that i am using the Cache option so the tabs maintain state. Now problems arise when more than one tab has been loaded. It looks like HTML items such as forms and divs now have duplicated id's within the DOM, so Ajax queries can no longer distinguish between the elements.. The result is that any JavaScript/Ajax breaks. Does anyone have any suggestions for way to tackle such a problem? Thanks in advance..

  • JQuery Datatable Question: Centering column data after data insertion

    I have a data table that is initially empty and is populated after a particular Javascript call. After the data is inserted into the table, I'd like to center all of the data in one of the columns. I tried specifying this at the initialization step in this way: dTable = $('#dt').datatable({ 'aoColumns': [ null, null, { "sClass" : "center" }] }); The data in the third column was not centered after the insertions were complete. I tried modifying aoColumns after the insertions and redrawing the table as well: dTable.fnSettings().aoColumns[2].sClass = "center"; dTable.fnDraw(); This did not work either. So my question is simply how should I go about telling the data table to center the data in the third column? Thanks in advance for your suggestions. Chris

    Is it possible to create an abstract TestCase, that will have some test_* methods, but this TestCase won't be called and those methods will only be used in subclasses? I think I am going to have one abstract TestCase in my test suite and it will be subclassed for a few different implementation of a single interface. This is why all test methods are the some, only one, internal method changes. How can I do it in elegant way?

  • XCode missing inline test results

    Everywhere there are pretty pictures of failing tests shown inline in the code editor, like in Peepcodes Objective-C for Rubyist screencast and in apples own technical documentation: When I build my test-target, all I get is a little red icon down in the right corner, stating something went wrong. When clicking on it, I get the Build Results, where I can start to hunt for test results. Do anyone have a clue on what´s wrong?

Is there any option to specify to The Build Matrix the execution of each python version in a secuential way? Or maybe, Is there a better way to do this?

I get all the text from layout.phtml, where i have the global site layout. This is my first endeavor writing a unittest for zend-M-V-C structure so probably I'm missing something important? The problem is I only want the inner div to scrollTo and the outer div to remain at the top of the screen.     I am doing my first steps with TDD. The problem is (as probably with everyone starting with TDD), I never know very well what kind of unit tests to do when I start working in my projects. Let's assume I want to write a Stack class with the following methods(I choose it as it's an easy example): Stack<T> - Push(element : T) - Pop() : T - Seek() : T - Count : int - IsEmpty : boolean How would you approch this? I never understood if the idea is to test a few corner cases for each method of the Stack class or start by doing a few "use cases" with the class, like adding 10 elements and removing them. What is the idea? To make code that uses the Stack as close as possible to what I'll use in my real code? Or just make simple "add one element" unit tests where I test if IsEmpty and Count were changed by adding that element? How am I supposed to start with this?

Is there a better way to do this, while preserving correct AAA order?

  • How to set up Flex Unit 4

    Does anyone know of any guides or any sort of documentation on how to set up the new Flex Builder 4 beta? I've been pulling my hair all day long, none of my tests are executed and I can't for the life of me understand what's wrong. There are no errors at all. It's as if the metadata tags are not recognized, is there some special compiler argument to recognize them? I seem to remember that this is not necessary as long as the swc files that are included were compiled with said arguments. I'm using Beta 1 of Flex Unit 4 which can be found here: http://opensource.adobe.com/wiki/display/flexunit/FlexUnit+4+feature+overview I'm actually using the very same code that is included with that package to run the tests, but no tests are executed. Neither mine nor the ones included in the FU4 package. The lack of documentation certainly doesn't help much...

  • Populating an association with children in factory_girl

    I have a model Foo that has_many 'Bar'. I have a factory_girl factory for each of these objects. The factory for Bar has an association to Foo; it will instantiate a Foo when it creates the Bar. I'd like a Factory that creates a Foo that contains a Bar. Ideally this Bar would be created through the :bar factory, and respect the build strategy (create/build) used to create the Foo. I know I could just call the :bar factory and then grab the Foo reference from the new Bar. I'd like to avoid this; in my test case, the important object is Foo; calling the Bar factory seems a bit circuitous. Also, I can see the need for a Foo with multiple Bars. Is this possible in factory_girl? How do you define this relationship in the parent?
