  • FreeText COUNT query on multiple tables is super slow

    - by Eric P
I have two tables: **Product** ID Name SKU **Brand** ID Name Product table has about 120K records Brand table has 30K records I need to find count of all the products with name and brand matching a specific keyword. I use freetext 'contains' like this: SELECT count(*) FROM Product inner join Brand on Product.BrandID = Brand.ID WHERE (contains(Product.Name, 'pants') or contains(Brand.Name, 'pants')) This query takes about 17 secs. I rebuilt the FreeText index before running this query. If I only check for Product.Name. They query is less then 1 sec. Same, if I only check the Brand.Name. The issue occurs if I use OR condition. If I switch query to use LIKE: SELECT count(*) FROM Product inner join Brand on Product.BrandID = Brand.ID WHERE Product.Name LIKE '%pants%' or Brand.Name LIKE '%pants%' It takes 1 secs. I read on MSDN that: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms187787.aspx To search on multiple tables, use a joined table in your FROM clause to search on a result set that is the product of two or more tables. So I added an INNER JOINED table to FROM: SELECT count(*) FROM (select Product.Name ProductName, Product.SKU ProductSKU, Brand.Name as BrandName FROM Product inner join Brand on product.BrandID = Brand.ID) as TempTable WHERE contains(TempTable.ProductName, 'pants') or contains(TempTable.BrandName, 'pants') This results in error: Cannot use a CONTAINS or FREETEXT predicate on column 'ProductName' because it is not full-text indexed. So the question is - why OR condition could be causing such as slow query?

  • C++ STL: Trouble with string iterators

    - by Rosarch
I'm making a simple command line Hangman game. void Hangman::printStatus() { cout << "Lives remaining: " << livesRemaining << endl; cout << getFormattedAnswer() << endl; } string Hangman::getFormattedAnswer() { return getFormattedAnswerFrom(correctAnswer.begin(), correctAnswer.end()); } string Hangman::getFormattedAnswerFrom(string::const_iterator begin, string::const_iterator end) { return begin == end? "" : displayChar(*begin) + getFormattedAnswerFrom(++begin, end); } char Hangman::displayChar(const char c) { return c; } (Eventually, I'll change this so displayChar() displays a - or a character if the user has guessed it, but for simplicity now I'm just returning everything.) When I build and run this from VS 2010, I get a popup box: Debug Assertion Failed! xstring Line: 78 Expression: string iterator not dereferenceable What am I doing wrong?

  • Best way to reverse a string in C# 2.0

    - by Guy
I've just had to write a string reverse function in C# 2.0 (i.e. LINQ not available) and came up with this: public string Reverse(string text) { char[] cArray = text.ToCharArray(); string reverse = String.Empty; for (int i = cArray.Length - 1; i > -1; i--) { reverse += cArray[i]; } return reverse; } Personally I'm not crazy about the function and am convinced that there's a better way to do it. Is there?

  • For which substring of the string1 matches occurred with the string2.

    - by Harikrishna
I want to know that in particular string1 for which substring of the string1 the string2 matches.Like String str1="Order Number Order Time Trade Number"; String str2="Order Tm"; string regex = Regex.Escape(str2.Replace(@"\ ", @"\s*"); bool isColumnNameMatched = Regex.IsMatch(str1, regex, RegexOptions.IgnoreCase); I am using regex because "Order Tm" will also matches "Order Time".It gives bool value that matches occurred or not. But if it str2 is in str1 then I want to know at which position in the str1 the str2 matches. Like str2="Order Tm" then something like that returns the string which is matched with str2 in the str1.Here str2="Order Tm" then it should return like in the str1,Order Time is the substring where matches is occurred.

    - by rajeeesh
I had a commenting application in my web site. The comments will store in a MySQL table . table structure as follows id | Comment | user | created_date ------------------------------------------------------ 12 | comment he | 1245 | 2012-03-30 12:15:00 ------------------------------------------------------ I need to run a query for listing all the comments after a specific time. ie .. a query like this SELECT * FROM comments WHERE created_date > "2012-03-29 12:15:00" ORDER BY created_date DESC Its working fine.. My question is if I got a 1-2 lakh entry in this table is this query is sufficient for the purpose ? or this query will take time to execute ? • What scenarios/settings will result in a query on SQL Server (2008) return stale data

    - by s1mm0t
Most applications rarely need to display 100% accurate data. For example if this stack overflow question displays that there have been 0 views, when there have really been 10, it doesn't really matter. This is one way that the (perceived) performance of applications can be improved, by caching results and therefore sometimes not showing 100% accurate results. There are some cases where the data does need to be 100% accurate though. So if I run the query select * from Foo I want to be sure that the results are not stale. Now depending on how my database is set up, other activity on the database, use of transactions and isolation levels etc this query may or may not be a true reflection of the world. What scenario's and settings can people think of that will result in this query returning stale results or given that another connection is part way through a transaction that has updated this table, how can I guarantee that when the above query returns, the results will be accurate.

  • Hashing (hidding) strings in Python

    - by Lucas
What I need is to hash a string. It doesn't really have to be secure because its just going to be a hidden pharse in the text file (simply it doesn't have to be recognizable for a human-eye). It should not be just a random string because when user will be typing the string I would like to hash it and compare it with already hashed one (in the text file). What would be the best for this purpose? Can it be done with the own class?

  • SQL: Interrupting a query

    - by NoozNooz42
I've worked on a project using a proprietary non-SQL DB where queries could be interrupted and in the codebase there were quite some spots where that functionnality was used and made perfect sense (for example to stop a long running query that gets cancelled by the user, or when a more recent query takes place and renders the previous query obsolete, etc.) and I realized I never really saw that kind of "interrupted queries" previously and thought it could make a good SO question (several questions, but they're all related to exactly the same thing): can SQL queries be interrupted? is this part of the SQL standard? if it's not part of the SQL standard, which SQL DBs allow queries to be interrupted (any example most welcome)? is it common to interrupt a DB query (SQL or not) which you'll know you won't care about the result anymore? (in the codebase I've worked on, it sure helps lighten the server's load)

  • Query MS Access database in VB 2008

    - by Logan
Hi, I added an Access database as a Data Source in VB 2008. I want to query this database and use the information in various ways throughout the program. For example, there is an Employee table with first/last names of employees. I have a combobox on my form that I want to display all of the employees. So I want to query the database for all the rows in the Employee table, and add them to the combobox as I go. I am familiar with SQL Syntax, so I am not asking how to write the query itself, but rather how to fetch rows in VB code (mimicking php's mysql_fetch_assoc and mysql_connect essentially) Thanks! Edit: Also, I want to know if I can query a DB if I don't add it as a data source (if I know the path name of the database)

  • MySQL Query : Advise Needed.

    - by Rachel
    "SELECT id as Id from dbTable WHERE code = ? AND CURDATE() BETWEEN start_date AND end_date AND offerId IN ('12321', '12124')"; //Passing arguments for the query $args = array_merge(array(51342),$offerid); //Execute the prepared query $statement->execute($args); Now array(51342) represents combination of code+value, aside my database has value, code columns and so I want a query which would look logically like "SELECT id as Id from dbTable WHERE code and value (Note here I do not know the syntax, what am looking at is (code+value = ?), please advise on query) = ? AND CURDATE() BETWEEN start_date AND end_date AND offerId IN ('12321', '12124')";

I think I am doing it wrong.

  • Removing words from a file

    - by user1765792
I'm trying to take a regular text file and remove words identified in a separate file (stopwords) containing the words to be removed separated by carriage returns ("\n"). Right now I'm converting both files into lists so that the elements of each list can be compared. I got this function to work, but it doesn't remove all of the words I have specified in the stopwords file. Any help is greatly appreciated. def elimstops(file_str): #takes as input a string for the stopwords file location stop_f = open(file_str, 'r') stopw = stop_f.read() stopw = stopw.split('\n') text_file = open('sample.txt') #Opens the file whose stop words will be eliminated prime = text_file.read() prime = prime.split(' ') #Splits the string into a list separated by a space tot_str = "" #total string i = 0 while i < (len(stopw)): if stopw[i] in prime: prime.remove(stopw[i]) #removes the stopword from the text else: pass i += 1 # Creates a new string from the compilation of list elements # with the stop words removed for v in prime: tot_str = tot_str + str(v) + " " return tot_str

  • How to create a datastore.Text object out of an array of dynamically created Strings?

    - by Adrogans
I am creating a Google App Engine server for a project where I receive a large quantity of data via an HTTP POST request. The data is separated into lines, with 200 characters per line. The number of lines can go into the hundreds, so 10's of thousands of characters total. What I want to do is concatenate all of those lines into a single Text object, since Strings have a maximum length of 500 characters but the Text object can be as large as 1MB. Here is what I thought of so far: public void doPost(HttpServletRequest req, HttpServletResponse resp) { ... String[] audioSampleData = new String[numberOfLines]; for (int i = 0; i < numberOfLines; i++) { audioSampleData[i] = req.getReader().readLine(); } com.google.appengine.api.datastore.Text textAudioSampleData = new Text(audioSampleData[0] + audioSampleData[1] + ...); ... } But as you can see, I don't know how to do this without knowing the number of lines before-hand. Is there a way for me to iterate through the String indexes within the Text constructor? I can't seem to find anything on that. Of note is that the Text object can't be modified after being created, and it must have a String as parameter for the constructor. (Documentation here) Is there any way to this? I need all of the data in the String array in one Text object. Many Thanks!

  • Java: equivalent to C's strnicmp? (both startsWith and ignoreCase)

    - by Jason S
String string1 = "abCdefGhijklMnopQrstuvwYz"; String string2 = "ABC"; I had been using string1.startsWith(string2), which would return false in the above example, but now I need to ignore case sensitivity, and there is not a String.startsWithIgnoreCase(). Besides doing string1.toLowerCase.startsWith(string2.toLowerCase()); is there an efficient way to see if string1 starts with string2 in a case-insensitive way?

  • My $query->fetch() doesn't work

    - by Tae
Question edited following the comments. It still doesn't work. Hi there, I'm trying to learn how PDO works, but my script: $database = new PDO('mysql:host=localhost;dbname=***', '***', '***'); $query = $database->prepare("SELECT nombre, tecnica, tamanno, estado FROM obra WHERE anno = ?"); $query->execute(array('2009')); while ($item = $query->fetch(PDO::FETCH_ASSOC)) { $item['nombre']; } Prints nothing. If I do: var_dump($query->fetch()) I get bool(false). After reading lots of examples I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. Thanks in advance.

I am trying to validate that the enteredAnswer is the same as the second index of the array. if (enteredAnswer.equalsIgnoreCase(triviaData[Config.CurrentQuestion][1])) { This is the code I tried, but I get the error "Cannot invoke equalsIgnoreCase(String) on the array type String[]" I am a beginner programmer so if you could help me out it would be highly appreciated.
