• Why doesn't Perl threading work when I call readdir beforehand?

  Whenever I call readdir before I create a thread, I get an error that looks like this: perl(2820,0x7fff70c33ca0) malloc: * error for object 0x10082e600: pointer being freed was not allocated * set a breakpoint in malloc_error_break to debug Abort trap What's strange is that it happens when I call readdir before I create a thread (i.e. readdir is not called in any concurrent code). I don't even use the results from readdir, just making the call to it seems to screw things up. When I get rid of it, things seem to work fine. Some example code is below: opendir(DIR, $someDir); my @allFiles = readdir(DIR); close(DIR); my $thread = threads-create(\&sub1); $thread-join(); sub sub1 { print "in thread\n" }

• Can someone explain this java interface to me please?

  I realize that the method run must be declared because its declared in the runnable interface. But my question comes when this class runs how is the Thread object allowed if there is no import call to a particular package? how does runnable know anything about Thread or its methods? does the runnable interface extend the thread class? • How refresh a DrawingArea in PyGTK ?

  I have an interface created with Glade. It contains a DrawingArea and buttons. I tried to create a Thread to refresh every X time my Canva. • C# Threading and Sql Connections

  I have a method that attempts to update a sql server database in an ASP.NET application. If the update fails, it catches the exception and then queues the update in MSMQ, and then spins up a new thread that will later de-queue the pending update and try again. When the thread starts, it fails to open a database connection because it is attempting to connect using Network Service as the login. The sql connection is using Windows Authentication, and will work outside of the thread. If I put a breakpoint in the code that executes inside the new thread and check the Thread.CurrentPrincipal, it shows the Identity as being the correct user. Why is the sql connection attempting to be opened by the Network Service account? I can elaborate further is necessary. Thanks.

• Qt Direct Connection

  Hello I have created Qt tree control( and its nodes ) in different thread than the main thread. In the main thread I want to show context menu for the clicked node, so I am connectiong the actions in the menu with appropriate slots in the main thread. The connect function returns true , but slot is never executed. If I explicitly say in connect function that this is Qt :: DirectConnection then everything works fine. Why is this ? I I create my tree in main thread, everything also works fine , without having to say that this is Qt::DirectConnection .

• What strategies are efficient to handle concurrent reads on heterogeneous multi-core architectures?

  I am tackling the challenge of using both the capabilities of a 8 core machine and a high-end GPU (Tesla 10). I have one big input file, one thread for each core, and one for the the GPU handling. The Gpu thread, to be efficient, needs a big number of lines from the input, while the Cpu thread needs only one line to proceed (storing multiple lines in a temp buffer was slower). The file doesn't need to be read sequentially. I am using boost. My strategy is to have a mutex on the input stream and each thread locks - unlocks it. This is not optimal because the gpu thread should have a higher precedence when locking the mutex, being the fastest and the most demanding one. I can come up with different solutions but before rush into implementation I would like to have some guidelines. What approach do you use / recommend ?

• What to use to wait on a indeterminate number of tasks?

  I am still fairly new to parallel computing so I am not too sure which tool to use for the job. I have a System.Threading.Tasks.Task that needs to wait for n number number of tasks to finish before starting. The tricky part is some of its dependencies may start after this task starts (You are guaranteed to never hit 0 dependent tasks until they are all done). Here is kind of what is happening Parent thread creates somewhere between 1 and (NUMBER_OF_CPU_CORES - 1) tasks. Parent thread creates task to be run when all of the worker tasks are finished. Parent thread creates a monitoring thread Monitoring thread may kill a worker task or spawn a new task depending on load. I can figure out everything up to step 4. How do I get the task from step 2 to wait to run until any new worker threads created in step 4 finish?

  I am using a file as a cache for big data. One thread writes to it sequentially, another thread reads it sequentially. Can I be sure that all data that has been written (by write()) in one thread can be read() from another thread, assuming a proper "happens-before" relationship in terms of the Java memory model? Is this behavior documented? EDIT: In my JDK, FileOutputSream does not override flush(), and OutputStream.flush() is empty. That's why I'm wondering... EDIT^2: The streams in question are owned exclusively by a class that I have full control of. Each stream is guaranteed to be accesses by one thread only. My tests show that it works as expected, but I'm still wondering if this is guaranteed and documented.   So today I just came across the 'live()' function that binds any future and past elements to the whatever event you choose, such as 'onclick'. Right now I'm having to set up buttons like the following each time I load a new button via ajax ... $('a.btn.plus').button({icons:{primary:'ui-icon-plusthick'}}); $('a.btn.pencil').button({icons:{primary:'ui-icon ui-icon-pencil'}}); $('a.btn.bigx').button({icons:{primary:'ui-icon ui-icon-closethick'}}); So, instead of calling these lines each time I use ajax to add a new button, is there a similar way to tell JQuery to setup my buttons ANYTIME I add new ones? • Java ThreadPool for multiple identical tasks

  I have 1 thread who sole job is to grab DatagramPackets off of a socket and stick them in a buffer. Another thread works out of that buffer, processing the DatagramPackets. I'd like to have a pool of threads working out of that buffer. I had thought to use a fixed thread pool to do this. To do so, do I need to create the pool, then submit enough runnables for execution to fill it up? I had hoped for a way to say "this is the thread/runnable that I want you to execute, this is how many I want running, GO!". Is there such a method of doing this? Is something other than a fixed thread pool better suited?

• Macbook OSX applications crashing on startup

  Closed my computer last night, went home. Opened it and it had restarted. Now when I open a couple programs such as Adobe Fireworks or Appcelerator Titanium they throw up a nasty error like below. Other programs (Chrome, Firefox, Textmate, Versions) works fine. Any thoughts on this? I haven't owned my Macbook long so I'm not even aware of the right tools or places to look to track this down. Any help would be most appreciated. It's making it hard to get my work done :] If it helps at all both those programs were probably open when it restarted. • MacBook OS X applications crashing on startup

  Closed my computer last night, went home. Opened it and it had restarted. Now when I open a couple programs such as Adobe Fireworks or Appcelerator Titanium they throw up a nasty error like below. Other programs (Chrome, Firefox, Textmate, Versions) work fine. Any thoughts on this? I haven't owned my MacBook long so I'm not even aware of the right tools or places to look to track this down. Any help would be most appreciated. It's making it hard to get my work done :] If it helps at all both those programs were probably open when it restarted. From the look of it I'm not sure if it's a permissions error or something? I completely re-installed one of the applications (Appcelerator Titanium). Didn't seem to help. • Oracle WebCenter: Common User Experience Architecture

  You may remember that the key goals of the new release of WebCenter are providing a Modern User Experience, unparalleled Application Integration, converging all the best of the existing portal platforms into WebCenter and delivering a Common User Experience Architecture.  In previous weeks we've provided an overview of Oracle WebCenter and discussed some of the other key goals and this week, we'll focus on how the new release of Oracle WebCenter delivers a Common User Experience Architecture.When Oracle talks about a Common User Experience Architecture, it really focuses on a core set of areas.  First, the way that information is accessed needs to be consistent and extensible so that as requirements change, the applications don't need to be rewritten for every change. Second, this information access layer needs to be securely accessible to any application, site, or any other channel that needs to leverage this information.  Third, there needs to be a consistent presentation layout, Oracle calls it a UI shell, so that all resources can fit together in a useable, productive way.  Fourth, there needs to be a common set of design patterns for how different menus, features, and services fit into this UI Shell for broad and productive usability.  Fifth, there needs to be a set of design patterns for the individual services that plug into this UI shell so that end users can move from one module of the application to another without new learning.  Finally, all of these layers need to be customizable in an easy way that insulates IT from patching and upgrading problems and allows the business owners the agility to quickly change with the market conditions.As Oracle has already announced, we will release our next generation of enterprise applications called Oracle Fusion Applications.  We have thousands of developers building these applications that all had different programming tool experience and UI design experience.  We've educated over 6,000 developers building Oracle Fusion Applications to leverage these Common User Experience Architecture patterns to speed their learning curve of the new Java standards as well as SOA principles to deliver a revolutionary new set of applications.  You could imagine the big challenge with getting all these developers with different backgrounds and different UI design skills to deliver a completely integrated application user experience.  This is why Oracle invested heavily in designing this Common User Experience Architecture, based on Oracle WebCenter and the Oracle Application Development Framework (ADF).  It pulls together the best practices and design patterns that Oracle development required in order to bring Fusion Applications to market and Oracle WebCenter is the user experience layer that all of this is surfaced through.  In this way, customers can quickly brand a deployment for new partnerships without having to redevelop a new site.  Or they can quickly add new options to the UI Shell to enable their line of business managers to quickly adapt to a new competitive product.  And with the core integration of the activities to produce a Business Activity Stream, customers are able to stay on top of all their key business actions when they happen as they happen and more importantly, the system can recommend actions or resources to help act on these activities.And we've authored this whole set of design patterns for Oracle development to take advantage of in delivering Fusion Applications.  We're also applying these design patterns to our existing eBusiness Suite, Peoplesoft, Siebel, and JD Edwards applications so that they can tie in the exact same way that Fusion Applications has been brought together.  This will provide customers with a complete Common User Experience Architecture for their entire ecosystem of applications within their enterprise whether they are from Oracle, another vender, or custom built applications. And this is all provided in the new release of Oracle WebCenter.  These design patterns cover elements around delivering a complete, aggregated menu of all the capabilities that their role allows independent of which application they are trying to access.   It means that as they move from one application to another, they will have a consistent user experience.  And if they are using an Oracle application, any customizations that are made to the application are preserved and managed through upgrades and patches.Be sure to check back this week as we share more information and resources on Oracle's Common User Experience Architecture.

• Combine the Address & Search Bars in Firefox

  The Search Bar in Firefox is very useful for finding additional information or images while browsing but the UI space it takes up can be frustrating at times. Now you can reclaim that UI space and still have access to all that searching goodness with the Foobar extension. Note: This is about the Foobar Firefox extension and not to be confused with Foobar2000 the open source music player. Before If you have the “Search Bar” displayed there is no doubt that it is taking up valuable space in your browser’s UI. What you need is the ability to reclaim that UI space and still have the same access to your search capability as before…no more sacrificing one for a gain with the other. After As soon as you have installed the extension you can see that the top part of your browser will look much sleeker without the “Search Bar” to clutter it up. The “Search Engine Icon” will now be visible inside of your “Address Bar” as seen here. You will be able to access the same “Search Engine Menu” as before by clicking on the “Search Engine Icon”. There are two display modes for search results (setting available in the “Options”). The first one shown here is “Simple Mode” where all results are in a condensed format. Notice that not only are there search suggestions but also “Bookmarks & History” listings as well. You can literally get the best of both when conducting a search. Note: The number of entries for search suggestions and bookmark/history listings can be adjusted higher or lower in the “Options”. The second one is “Rich Mode” where the results are shown with more details. Choose the “mode” that best suits your personal style. For our first example you can see the results when we conducted a quick search on “Windows 7” (using the first of the three offerings shown from Bing). Our second example was a search for “Flowers” using our Photobucket search engine. Once again nice results opened in a new tab for us. Options The options are easy to go through. It is really nice to be able to choose the number of results that you want displayed and the format that you want them shown in. Note: Changing the “Suggestion popup style” will require a browser restart to take effect. Conclusion If you love using the “Search Bar” in Firefox but want to reclaim the UI space then you will definitely want to add this extension to your browser. The ability to customize the number of results and choose the formatting make this extension even better. • I can't shut down nor reboot without console

  After update from 11.04 to 11.10 an wired conduct appears in my machine: Shutdown GUI methods (including reboot) cause only a log off, and in the login screen, shutdown nor reboot options do anything (if you wonder, reboot appears in the shutdown dialog). The only way i can reboot or shutdown is trough console sudo shutdown -h now or sudo reboot. This is OK for me, but not for the rest of the users. How to fix this? After i type a message in the applet, and send it, I get the foll output in java console: Trying to send msg :you deR?? Message sent! But in servlet side, I dont get anything in the logs. I used the O'Reily Java Servlet Programming as reference(The observer interface comes from there). But I am not getting any chat communication between two clients. As can be understood from the logs, the POST method is not called. Any reason for this?

  I created a database with aspnet_regsql, the database was created in sql sever 2008 and not in data folder in my project (do I need to move it to the folder manually?). Next, in Web Site Administration Tool I went to provider section and clicked don Test button. I got an error: Could not establish a connection to the database. If you have not yet created the SQL Server database, exit the Web Site Administration tool, use the aspnet_regsql command-line utility to create and configure the database, and then return to this tool to set the provider. Maybe I need to set something in a web.config, like membership settings or connection strings (or ASP.NET Website Administrator Tool should create those settings for me)? Update: Maybe it happens because I am using SQL server 2008 full and not express? Update 2: After setting membership section and connection string to my aspnetdb database in Web Site Administration Tool I've opened security-Security Setup Wizard-Define Roles (stage 4) I got this error: An error was encountered.
