  • Fix: Cant Change or Remove Visual Studio 2008 from DVD

    If you installed Visual Studio 2008 on a 64-bit operating system, you may have trouble when you try ad add or remove functionality by inserting the disk (or remounting the ISO image).  I believe this is because of the path used to install the 32-bit Visual Studio program.  When you run the setup.exe off of the disk, you get this: Clicking on Change or Remove Visual Studio 2008 brings up this dialog: But not long after it appears, it disappears to be replaced with: Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Setup A problem has been encountered while loading the setup components.  Canceling setup. FIX: Use Add or Remove Programs Launch the Add or Remove Programs dialog in Windows, and find Microsoft Visual Studio Team System 2008 Team Suite ENU (or whichever SKU you installed).  Click Uninstall/Change.  From here you should be able to change your installed components of Visual Studio successfully: Thanks to Brendan for the tip!   • In virtualbox, I can't access the dvd drive to install a guest host

    I have installed a fresh copy of Ubuntu Server 12.04 and VirtualBox 4.3. I have set up a VM called "MediaServer" and tried to start it. I then get the following error: Cannot open host device '/dev/sr0' for readonly access. Check the permissions of that device ('/bin/ls -l /dev/sr0'): Most probably you need to be member of the device group. Make sure that you logout/login after changing the group settings of the current user (VERR_ACCESS_DENIED) I have looked all over the Internet and have been unable to find a solution. Using Webmin, I tried changing the group settings so that my user name was in the "vboxusers" group, but that did not work either. I tried various other changes in group settings and none of them worked. Also, I tried rebooting the server after the changes and that didn't work either. I have been following a guide on how to set up an Ubuntu server from the website "linuxhomeserverguide.com" and when it came to the section where you could finally set up your first virtual machine, I am stumped. I would really appreciate it if someone could help me. Thanks in advance.

Solution By looking in the device manager you see the next problem: So open the properties via right mouse click. This gives you the hint to remove the drive first. “Windows cannot use this hardware device because it has been prepared for "safe removal", but it has not been removed from the computer. (Code 47)” Whether you select the comment by dragging the mouse over the the hidden part or pressing the button “Properties”. So we unplug and reinsert the ultrabay. If you think, now the system is working – you are wrong. Now the system is the meaning, that the ultrabay is unplugged. You could verify this by refresh the view in the device panel.   • Macbook Pro won't boot from DVD with SSD

    Here's the timeline of events. Had a running MBP 17 Early 2011 Thunderbolt with OWC Mercury Extreme Pro SSD 115GB drive. Installed Windows 7 via bootcamp. I have done this multiple times before and every time I need to format the bootcamp partition before installing. I think this time I actually deleted the partition and then selected the freespace to install. This worked fine for the most part but I wasn't able to boot the boot camp partition using vmware fusion. I gave up and used the boot camp assistant to revert back to one mac partition. I was getting some odd behavior so I rebooted the machine. It then came up with a message saying no bootable partiton. This made me think (and still does) that the windows install using the free space versus the boot camp partition caused the windows MBR boot loader to get installed incorrectly and mucked up the OS X installation. Ok, fine, I can just reinstall. I can't seem to boot from the original MBP installation DVD. I hold down c on boot but I never get past the all grey screen. I hear the DVD drive spin up but it eventually stops. I put the original HD back in it and everything works fine but when I put the SSD in, I can't boot from the DVD drive. I have already set up an RMA with OWC to send back the drive but considering the order of events, I feel as though it isn't a hardware issue but can't seem to figure out how to fix it. I can always send it back in but figured I would check and see if anyone could offer some guideance/assistence before doing so.

  • iTunes: Burn an MP3 CD when I only have AAC files?

    Is there a way to burn an MP3 CD when iTunes only contains (unprotected) AAC files purchased from the iTunes store? There isn't an option directly in iTunes to convert AAC - MP3 like there is for MP3 - AAC, and having to convert the AAC files to MP3 and use an extrnal tool to burn the disk would be time-consuming. Are there any plugins for iTunes that can accomplish this? Or programs which can read an iTunes playlist, convert the tracks to MP3 "on the fly" while burning the CD?

  • Best format for backing up data in Blu Ray

    We are in the process of backing up our hard drives to Blu Rays. I am creating tar.gz files and burning them to Blu Ray. Is it possible to use a simple (preferably Python-based) solution for creating images of those tar.gz files, of a predetermined size (to fit in the Blu Ray), and simply burn this images to the disc? Do you have any other approach for creating physical back-up of your hard drives?

  • CD Burned in XP isn't readable in Vista

    I burned a CD on XP using the built-in burning software and I can read the CD on that machine, but when I insert it into my Vista machine, I can't read the files. It shows the correct volume label, and the correct 'free space', but I can't access the actual files. Am I missing something obvious? (Both systems are fully up-to-date)

    im trying to image a new HP netbook via the windows 7 BACK UP util. however, it doesnt detect the external drive, although it's seen in my computer and BIOS. i tried using HP recovery manager with recovery disc creation but it says, no burning device installed although there is one... anyone successful in using the win7 back up utility? ive been tinkering this for a while but i cant make it right using an external dvd drive. unless i'll plug in an external hdd/

Later on, the project entered the architecting, development ... phases. due to the fact that the system included many competitive and exciting features I requested patenting it and its going in the process... so imagine you are the kind of person who used to love facing all kind of challenges and returning with excellent experience and results for the stakeholders and yourself, How fairly agile and scrum processes will credit and admit your talent and passion while the scrum master/coach treat the team as one unit that accomplish user stories and converge through trial and error approach??!!!! with that dark thoughts about agile and scrum I found many people "anti agile" and on top of them is "Crispin Rogers Johnson": http://agile-crispin.blogspot.com/ that guy made anti statement for everything Mike Cohn used to talk about.   • How to mount a blu-ray drive?

    Maybe it is for the best to close this question. This has nothing to do with a bluray drive in general anymore. Probably a hardware defect. I will try to test it with a windows system and different cables again... Thx so far. I have a bluray/dvd/cdrom drive with SATA. This happens when I try to mount: sudo mount -t auto /dev/scd0 /media/bluray mount: you must specify the filesystem type I tried all filesystems there are. I also installed makemkv. It finds the drive but not the disc.   • DVDs and CDs not recognized

    I have Ubuntu 12.04 LTS installed on my computer (Sony Vaio VGN-NS205N). It reads some CDs and DVDs just fine, but many others it will not recognize at all, or will only recognize after opening and closing the CD tray many times. It just shows the cd/dvd drive as being empty and won't show that anything is on there at all. I have a few DVDs (from the same publisher) that work every time. This comes up most often when trying to show my kid Bob the Builder, etc. Some data CDs I would like to work with also have the same issue. It's not a hardware or defective disc problem, since all these will play in Windows on the same machine. It's just really annoying to have to switch operating systems to play videos or get data off discs. All the searches I have done people recommend installing medibuntu and other repositories. I have and they are all up to date. No change. Any help that works would be greatly appreciated.

In device manager I have got my DVD drivers up to date however under "Other Devices" I'm missing several which sound key: Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus Video Controller Video Controller (VGA Compatible) However I've installed all the relevant drivers I can find on the Dell website. The drive itself is working - I've run software from the drive. I'm afraid I am far from a sys-admin so I'm struggling on this one. How can I get my DVDs playing again?

  • Mac OS X CD ripping speed

    I am using vobcopy (installed via macports) to rip DVDs on a mac. I have been doing this for a while on linux with no problems. On the mac however, it is VERY slow. I am guessing that somehow the DVD drive is being limited to 1x in order to keep noise and power consumption down during playback. Is there a way to over ride this? Update: It is MUCH slower than 1x. It has taken me about an hour to copy 300MB Notes: While I appreciate all suggestions, I am not looking for "Have you tried HandBrake?". I am looking for a solution to copy the contents of a DVD, not transcode them. Also, I am launching vobcopy from an apple script that gets executed on DVD insertion, so a GUI solution is not desirable.

    How could I resize or reprocess bunch of videofiles (tv show series) to be able write it on DVD? Total size of all files should be less or equal to the max size of dvd - 4.7G. Is there any kind of program which allows conversion with total filesize adjustement up to defined limit? Is there way to be sure quality will not suffer noticeably after video files adjustments? Maybe there is a software which allows adjusting quality and creating DVD video disk with nifty menu automatically? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

I have a DVD RW drive that is well listed in the bios, and if no CD is in, it is also present in the "My Computer" of my Fedora 16. But when I put a disc on it, the icon disapear from "My Computer", and I can not do anything with this ! (Like erasing a RW disc). I'd like to boot a Fedora 17 Live CD image. I burned it on an other computer but when I try to run it in bios, nothing is done and I'm redirected to Grub of my HD.     Problem: Boot time delay caused by udev. Early after initscripts starts there is message saying waiting for uevents to be processed and causing delay on boot, it seems that udev is looking if there is disc in dvd tray. After udev has found disc, boot process continues normally. Main question: How to prevent udev dvd lookup at boot time? Maybe there is some way to skip some udev related stuff and let boot process continue and then later instruct udev to do stuff that may cause some delay (delay in uevents, but not in main boot process, is acceptable after udev is initially loaded).

  • Splicing from a weird DVD-format

    I have a DVD full of video clips. I want to exact only some of these clips. I tried to use mplayer/mencoder's nice feature of Edit Decision List (EDL). However, the video timer seems to constantly reset with each video clip (less than 20 seconds) and its EDL does not have a video clip number or anything like that. I've tried using VLC to extract the video into an MPG file, but the same timer problem persists. What's a good way to splice out part of these clips from the DVD? I'm willing to write a small program in any language to make this work.

  • Can I run my OS from a DVD?

    I'm thinking of ways to get around the high cost of hard drives lately. I was thinking an optical jukebox would be interesting (though more expensive than just buying a hard drive), then thought I've heard of OS's run from DVD so why not boot from a Blue-ray drive. I think a smaller OS like a linux flavor would work. I'd like to know if there's a way I could burn Windows 7 to DVD for this use. Just curious. Anyone know if this is possible? Thanks, Mac
