  • How to redistribute binary programs built on modern Ubuntu so that they can be executed on any older Linux system ?

    I found that if I build any binary on Ubuntu 10.10, then it doesn't execute on some older Linuxes. It is because Ubuntu uses a very new C library, called EGLIBC. Most of the desktop Linux systems use GLIBC. I would like to know whether there is any standard method how to redistribute binary programs built on a modern Ubuntu so that they can be executed on any older Linux system ? How to find all required dependencies (glibc version, dynamic libraries) ?

  • In Windows 7, can a program overrride file associations not set in "Set Default Programs"?

    I am using Windows 7. I installed a media application (KMPlayer) that does not show up in the "Set Default Programs" list. Now in the KMPlayer's preferences, there's a setting to associate file types with itself. But when I tried that, I noticed that the files still default to Windows Media Player. So can I assume that no external application can change the program associated with a file type unless explicitly done via the: [Set Default Programs] or [Associate a file type ... with a program] or the [Open with...] options? Thanks in advance! Btw, I know there are utilities that can help me batch change it. I'm just more curious about the "rules" that Windows 7 has in place regarding file types and their associated programs.

  • Video screen recording + add text (subtitle), export as .flv. What programs?

    I have to record a video to showcase a tool I've made. It's going to include my talking, but I also want some overlay text (subtitles) for people who doesn't have sound. I'm looking for a program that will let me add a text overlay (as subtitle) for my video, and if possible, export it as .flv . I've tried this so far: Used CamStudio for recording, using their lossless format. Converted the .avi file to a .flv using Any Video Converter (free version) I've been having some trouble with the output of CamStudio, some programs can't play the file right, it skips forward and backward. (VLC, Adobe Media Encoder CS4) So I'm looking for a program that accepts videos from CamStudio*, can add text to my video, and hopefully export as flv. *(If that's not possible I'm open for other recording programs). I'd like to ONLY use free programs, and I'm on Windows XP. Looking forward to your help :)

But now after installing and restarting my laptop, the internet is crawling. How can I see what was changed? Hint: prior to installing these 12 programs, I installed IE version 8. So probably if I removed that it would fix it, but the problem is I need IE in order for my SQL/C# web application to work properly.

    Is there a reason why the source code of programs shown in research papers are not released ? I understand that research papers are more about the general idea of accomplishing something than implementation details, but I don't get why they don't release the code. For example, in this paper ends with: Results The human line drawing system is implemented through the Qt framework in C++ using OpenGL, and runs on a 2.00 GHz Intel dual core processor workstation without any additional hardware assistance. We can interactively draw lines while the system synthesizes the new path and texture. Do they keep the source code closed intentionally because of a monetization they intend to make with it, or because of copyright ?

    I'm completely new to Ubuntu I downloaded and unpacked a tar.gz package, after extraction, it is said in its documentation : "type ./configure --disable-gts" But when i run this command alone it tells me "Permission Denied" error. Then i tried to use "sh ./configure --disable-gts" insted, but this time i faced this error: configure: error: cannot run C compiled programs. If you meant to cross compile, use `--host'. How can i overcome these two problems? (I mean permission and compile error) I'm just a rookie and i need urgent help. Thanx

  • Where can I find simple, but well-written programs to learn from?

    I've tried a few times to look at the source code for various things from github or other sites, in javascript, C#, PHP, etc. I'm never able to understand the programs as a whole though. I can sort of piece together what a specific snippet of code does, but I quickly lose the context of what I'm looking at and how it fits in. I want to be able to improve, but everything I've tried learning from so far has been too big. Where can I find well-written, but not very complex source code to look at? edit: Sorry, to be more specific, I'm hoping for javascript/php/C#.

    Just installed Ubuntu for the first time... Is there any simple way to browse installed programs? On Mac there is the Applications top-level folder... here I see Desktop, Documents, Downloads etc but no Apps? That'd be a good idea, no? (is there some way to create this myself?) On Windows there is the Start menu... Here it seems like I have to click the 'Dash Home' and then I can see 'Recent Apps' ... I can search for them (I'd rather not) ...or I can click the ruler/pencil icon at the bottom and see 'Recent Apps' and click to expand 'Installed Apps' ...ok that's all of them - is it possible to get a straight list view instead of the hard-to-scan wrapped rows? Also, is there any way to get rid of the pointless random selection of 'Apps available for download' at the bottom?

On start up, every morning, I go through a routine of opening the same five or six programs. I open each on a specific desktop. I would like to have this automated. Is there a way to script or configure this? Additional question: To further complicate the matter, I am running two screens in twin view mode.     I have a shared system, running Windows7 X64, restricted to a 'standard user' with no password. Not everyone who has access to the system has the administrator password. This works rather well, except for some applications - specially the unlock-applications for encrypted hard drives/USB flash drives. The specific ones either require Administrator access (eg. Seagate Blackarmor) or simply fail without it -- since these programs are sending raw commands to a device, this is to be expected. I would like to be able to add the hashes of these particular programs to a whitelist, and have them run as administrator without needing any prompts. Since these are by definition on removable media, I can't simply use a filename or even a path. One of the users who shares the system can be considered 'crafty', so anything which temporarily grants administrator rights to an user account is certain to cause problems. What i'd like to be able to do: 1) Create an admin account that can only run programs from a whitelist (or, failing that, from a directory) I can't find a good way to do this: As far as I can tell, SRP applies equally to ALL users? Even if I put a "Deny" token on all directories on the system, such that new directories would inherit it, it could still potentially run things from the mounted USB devices. I also don't know whether it's possible to create a new directory that DOESN'T inherit from the parent, that would lake the deny token, and provide admin access. 2) Find a lightweight service that will run these programs in its local context Windows7 seems to block cross-privilege level communication by default, and I haven't found such for windows 7. One example seems to be "sudo" (http://pages.cpsc.ucalgary.ca/~nfriess/sudo/) but because it uses a WLNOTIFY hook, it won't work under Vista nor Windows7 Non-Solutions: - RunAs: Requires administrator password! (but everyone calls it "sudo" anyway) - RunAs /savecred: Nice idea, but appears to be completely insecure. - RUNASSPC - Same concept as RunAs, uses "encrypted" files with credentials, but checks in user-space. - Scheduled Tasks - "Fixed" permissions make this difficult, and doesn't support interactive processes even if it did. - SuRun: From Google: "Surun uses its own Windows service that adds the user to the group of administrators during program start and removes him automatically from that group again"

  • Is there a way to make Windows 8 delay loading the start screen until all startup programs have loaded?

    Currently Windows 8 will get to the start screen a good 10-15 seconds before my startup programs have loaded. Since these include my touchpad driver as well as a gamma correction program, I would prefer that they would load before this point. Is there anyway to do this - either by delaying Windows 8 showing the start screen, or perhaps by somehow having these programs run before reaching the login screen?

    Just few hours ago FileZilla was working fine. Then, suddenly I started to get this error: Status: Resolving address of ftp.readtypechinese.com Status: Connecting to 69.175.14.60:21... Error: Connection timed out Error: Could not connect to server And it happens with all my sites: Status: Resolving address of edasich.dreamhost.com Status: Connecting to 173.236.223.223:21... Status: Connection established, waiting for welcome message... Error: Connection timed out Error: Could not connect to server I'm using FileZilla 3.5.0 and Ubuntu 11.10. Any suggestions to fix this? (I already tried Passive mode and it doesn't work). EDIT: Ocasionally, the log goes beyond the ...waiting for welcome message: Status: Connection established, waiting for welcome message... Response: 220 DreamHost FTP Server Command: USER aleche23 Error: Connection timed out Error: Could not connect to server But the connection gets timed out again.   • Have there been attempts to make object containers that search for valid programs by auto wiring compatible components?

    I hope this post isn't too "Fringe" - I'm sure someone will just kill it if it is :) Three things made me want to reach out about this now: Decoupling is so in the forefront of design. TDD inspires the idea that it doesn't matter how a program comes to exist as long as it works. Seeing how often the adapter pattern is applied to achieve (1). I'm almost sure this has been tried from a memory of reading about it around the year 2000 or so. If I had to guess, it was maybe about and earlier version of the Java Spring framework. At this time we were not so far from days when the belief was that computer programs could exhibit useful emergent behavior. I think the article said it didn't work, but it didn't say it was impossible. I wonder if since then it has been deemed impossible or simply an illusion due to a false assumption of similarity between a brain and a CPU. I know this illusion existed because I had an internship in 1996 where I programmed neural nets that were supposedly going to exhibit "brain damage". STILL, after all that, I'm sitting around this morning and not able to shake the idea that it should be possible to have a method of programming to allow autonomous components to find each other, attempt to collaborate and their outputs evaluated against a set desired results.

  • How can I install iTunes in such a way that it can't put any "hooks" or helper programs on my computer?

    I'm buying a new iPad, which means I must once again install iTunes. I've not used iTunes in more than 6 months, since I bought a new computer. I don't like iTunes, but I can live with using it to buy/manage media and sync my Apple devices when the program is open. What I would like to do though, is find a way to install iTunes in such a way that it has absolutely no effect on my system when it is closed. iTunes normally installs several helper programs such as iTunesHelper.exe, and the Bonjour service. These programs run in the background when iTunes is closed. You can force-close them, or remove them from your setup files, but iTunes will often put them right back when you run it. I know these programs are mostly harmless, but they have at times caused issues such as iTunes spending system resources trying to catalog media files or drives connected to VPN, or other issues. At best they're just one more small background process eating up a small piece of my CPU time and RAM. How can I run iTunes without letting it get it's "hooks" into my system? One thought I had is that I could create a Windows user account just for iTunes, and deny it admin privileges. Then if I installed iTunes using that account maybe anything it installed wouldn't affect the "main" account on my PC? But I'm not sure if that would work.... Failing that, maybe some kind of virtualization software or sandbox I could install it in? I'm open to any suggestions. My system is an Intel-based PC running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. Thanks!

    Motivation: I want to remove applications I do not use to speed up my package processing tasks like dist upgrades, regular updates, but also for saving disk space and other reasons. I know this is a complex topic so first I will ask my question and second I will give some answers I already found out. Question: How do I find out which package I did not used at all? For example I always use the VLC so I could remove totem package. (Which I could have been used some day, yes.) Of course package dependencies could force me to have programs installed which I will never use. Notes: Find the packages which consume much space via synaptic: Select "Status" in lower left, select "Installed" in upper left, sort column on "size" in upper right. Then you can decide which big packages you really need. Use aptitude autoremove Use ubuntu-tweak's Janitor for removing old kernel packages, old configs, apt-cache entries, etc. Manually search for applications for a given task that you usually solve with your standard app. E.g. Movie player, Music player, Office program, Browser etc. (BTW: this is what I want to be helped with my question) When removing packages I always favour "apt-get purge" over "aptitude remove --purge" as aptitude often will also remove essential packages due to package dependencies. E.g. when removing "evolution" (as I use thunderbird) aptitude wants to remove also "ubuntu-desktop" and 756 other packages as well, while apt-get just removes evolution and its helping pacakges like evolution-common. Ubuntu lense gives me most recent used applications which are candidates for keeping :) Employ deborphan as I read in this related answer: How do I clean up my harddrive? I should certainly keep essential packages: Keep only essential packages This question is pretty much a duplicate of How to see what installed packages I have never used for cleaning purposes but covering only few aspects. However one answer suggests to use a program called unusedpkg but the link seems down. There is also a program called Kleen http://code.google.com/p/kleen/ but it won't compile in 11.10. However I hacked it to compile but the results are unusable, as for example the g++ package was marked as not used for 203, but actually I used it seconds ago for compiling Kleen itself ;) So don't use this tool. On http://wiki.debian.org/DebianPackageInformation I read the the package popularity-contest will produce log files with usage statistics. Unfortunately I didn't enabled the popularity contest so I can't find this log file.

  • How to quickly start Programs like "regedit.exe" from the Windows 7 search bar using substring match

    The search bar in Windows 7 is very convenient to quickly start applications by pressing the Win-key and then entering the name of the application. For applications with a Program Menu entry like Firefox, it is sufficient to type Fire and Firefox will be displayed in the Programs section of the search results. For other applications like regedit.exe, I have to type the full command regedit before the correct choice regedit.exe appears. Is there any way to have regedit.exe appear already when I have just entered a substring? Please note: I have seen Add my applications to Vista’s Start Search, but I don't want to add anything to the Start Menu manually. This question is about if there is some configuration that can be tuned to make the results appear. I have also seen Search behavior of Windows 7 start menu, but my problem is not that the exe appears under Files, regedit.exe correctly appears under Programs, but it should appear already for a substring match.

    I am currently writing some convenience methods for my terminal in my bash_profile and am sure if what I am writing is "the best way". I figure a good way to verify whether what I'm doing is right or not would be to find some source code of more established programs and see how they do it. My question then is, where can I find this code on my Mac? An example is, with Macports installed, where is the source code that opens the port interactive console when I type nothing but "port" in my shell? (I added Linux in the title even though I am on a Mac because I assume the answer would be the same for both) Edit: The answer I am looking for is in terms of which directory relative to the programs will I find their unix scripts.

The error obtained is: Error 1723. There is a problem with this Installer package. A DLL required for this install to complete could not be run I suspect filer were deleted or corrupted.
