  I'm a web developer. I got skills in PHP, CSS HTML. I also have a little bit of knowledge about JS. I want to get into game development to be a better programmer overal. I just want to start by making a simple platform game. Some kind of very simple mario clone. What is the best way to start the process of gamedevelopment? I know code is just code, but when thinking about starting my own little game, i do not exactly know where to start looking. Some opinions on this would be awsome!

• Connecting to named Instances Using Port Number

  I came across an interesting situation where a developer was trying to connect to a named instance using a DNS alias without specifying the instance name. Coincidently though he remembered to include the port number and miraculously it worked. So it appears that sql server accepts connections to a specific instance based on its port number. While it may not seem to particularly useful, I can imagine it could be used in the following situations: To mirror to a server with a different instance name (but same port number) To hide the complexity of instance names from end users and just rely on port number (and optionally dns alias)

• Welcome to my first official full time employee!

  The last few months have been pretty manic and Vizioz has been growing successfully into a fully fledged development agency. I have been working with a couple of excellent off shore developers who I would like to publicly thank for all their hard work over the last couple of months!This week has been the start of a new era for Vizioz, I have taken on my first full time developer who is now based in our office in Reading, welcome to Colin. Which means we now have 3 Umbraco developers! Currently one with Level 2 qualification (me) but if business keeps growing I'll be sending the others for training shortly so hopefully by the end of the summer we'll be a certified solution provider.We have lots of plans for the next 6 months, so it should be exciting times, subscribe to my RSS feed to come along for the ride :)

  In my short happy life as a developer, Ive run into all kinds of development efforts that include frameworks, libraries, web sites, and much more.The one thing that stands out as an irritant to me is complexity. Specifically, unnecessary complexity. • Parleys Testimonial at GlassFish Community Event, JavaOne 2012

  Parleys.com is an e-learning platform that provide a unique experience of online and offline viewing presentations, with integrated movies and chaptering, from the top notch developer conferences and about 40 JUGs all around the world. Stephan Janssen (the Devoxx man and Parleys webmaster) presented at the GlassFish Community Event at JavaOne 2012 and shared why they moved from Tomcat to GlassFish. The move paid off as GlassFish was able to handle 2000 concurrent users very easily. Now they are also running Devoxx CFP and registration on this updated infrastructure. The GlassFish clustering, the asadmin CLI, application versioning, and JMS implementation are some of the features that made them a happy user. Recently they migrated their application from Spring to Java EE 6. This allows them to get locked into proprietary frameworks and also avoid 40MB WAR file deployments. Stateless application, JAX-RS, MongoDB, and Elastic Search is their magical forumla for success there. • Developing a DVR software using a hardware KIT

  I'm currently thinking about a project for my masters degree graduation. I start researching for options to make my own video streaming software based on a premade hardware kit having not much knowledge about what I'll exactly need that will match my needs. My search led me to the DVR (Digital Video Recorder) cards which seems to be the closest to what I need, but still I can't find out a few basic things so I decide to ask for them here. Currently I haven't find a lot of manufacturers that offers such kits so where I can look and have some options to choose from? There are a lot of DVR products on the market but they already have a software written for them and even if I buy one they just don't give any documentation or sdk's so buying such is not an option I need a DVR card made exactly for software programers and not end users. Are there a preferred manufacturers that provide such kind of devices with good and developer-friendly documentation? Also - I prefer to do all this with Java, is this an option (I think I will make it with .NET too but really prefer Java as a language of choice)

• Is agile about development or management?

  On a debate over what Scrum is all about, I found that perhaps I totally misunderstood the agile thing. It appears to me that Scrum (which is certainly considered an Agile process) is all about managing features and sprints and roles and stuff with nothing to do with TDD, pair programming, CI, refactoring and other developer centric techniques and practices that I though (until now) are the heart of agile. Now I am facing a difficulty ! 1) Is Scrum agnostic to whether developers do agile practices? 2) Can you implement Scrum in a team that does not utilize automated tests? does not perform refactoring or does not adhere to the agile programming practices?

• Is the copy/paste approach professionally viable when working with the Google Maps API?

  I find that I understand much of the Javascript concepts used in the Google Maps API code, but then again there is quite a bit that is way over my head in syntax. For example, the geocoder syntax seems to be of Ajax form, though I don't understand what is happening under the hood (especially with lines like results[0].geometry.location). I am able to modify the body of if (status == google.maps.GeocoderStatus.OK) for different purposes though. So, being that I am able to take various code from the Developer's Guide and rework it to an extent for my own purposes, all the while not fully understanding what Google Maps is actually doing, does this make me a copy-paste programmer? Is this a bad practice, or is this professionally viable? I am, of course, interested in learning as much as I can, but what if time-constraints outweigh the learning process?

  JavaFX 2.2.3 and JDK 7u9 were released today. In addition to the release documentation, the following new information is provided: Learn about some of the "behind the scenes" work for an application, such as threads, events, and binding with the new learning trail on the landing page. Learn how to use cell editors with the List View component. The new example in the UI Controls tutorial shows how to build a list of names by selecting them from a combo box. Other documents were updated to reflect minor bug fixes. You can download JavaFX 2.2.3 from OTN. For all tutorials and API documentation, see http://docs.oracle.com/javafx.   Typical situation in UI design: you do design of some UI and, say, came up with some bright new idea like "ribbon" or "kinetic scroll past end". What would be the strategy about such thing? Register patent, don't like it, but anyway would like to ask: how long it takes to do all this stuff and how much it will cost in average? If to forget about patents, will the idea have something like "prior art" status or some such if someone will try to patent this in future? All this about project / product published by solo developer.

• How much should I charge for a web app

  I am a freelance web developer and I am working on a PHP/MySQL/Javascript based project. It's a web app that uses a custom CMS with user types, followers system, search forms, blogs, social integration. It will take about 3 months to finish, according to a roadmap I make (based on current development stage) and about a month after that for bug fixing and testing. So I have to tell them a price. • Which can I use to make GTK themes?

  I'm trying to make a new gtk theme using the murrine engine, using Humanity (default in ubuntu 9.10) as a template. You can grab the code in http://github.com/tutuca/themes However, I found cumbersome the process of creating a new theme with it. There is no central starting point. The documentation of both, the engine options (gtkrc's and stuff), and general theming practices (the format of the index.theme files, folders, bla bla) is scarce, How to's and tutorials are often old or subject to lots of opinionated debate and results confusing (to me, having a web developer background, at least :-). So... I wanted to ask to the fellows gtk themers and artist out there: Which tools you use to create a new theme, and how does your average workflow looks like?

• Software development, basics of design, conventions and scalability

  I need to improve my programming skills in order to achieve better scalability for the software I'm working on. Purpose is to learn the rules of adding new modules and features, so when it comes to maintaining existing ones there is some concept. So, I'm looking for a good book, tutorial or websites where I can continue to read about this. Currently, what I know and what I do is: to design relational database(3NF), make separate class for each table put that in MVC implement modular programming ...write code and hope for the best... I presume that next things I need to learn more deeply are: programming codex(naming, commenting, conventions...), organize functions building interfaces organizing custom made libraries, organizing API that I'm using, documenting, team work... ... At last what my job is, it does't need to affect your answer, PHP CodeIgniter developer.

• How do you handle increasingly long compile times when working with templates?

  I use Visual Studio 2012 and he have cases where we added templates parameters to a class "just" in order to introduce a "seam point" so that in unit-test we can replace those parts with mock objects. How do you usually introduce seam points in C++: using interfaces and/or mixing based on some criteria with implicit interfaces by using templates parameters also ? One reason to ask this is also because when compiling sometimes a single C++ file (that includes templates files, that could also include other templates) results in an object file being generated that takes in the order of around 5-10 seconds on a developer machine. VS compiler is also not particularly fast on compiling templates as far as I understand, and because of the templates inclusion model (you practically include the definition of the template in every file that uses it indirectly and possibly re-instantiate that template every time you modify something that has nothing to do with that template) you could have problems with compile times (when doing incremental compiling). What are your ways of handling incremental(and not only) compile time when working with templates (besides a better/faster compiler :-)).

• Avoiding duplicate bug reports

  I use Linux and other open source software in my home. As I'm not a professional coder, I usually report bugs to developers as my skills are not enough to solve problems on my own. What kind of things you want me to check before I send a bug report? I mean, once I thought I found a bug in Gedit and I couldn't find similar bug in Bugzilla. But after I sent the report, some developer said that the bug is already in Bugzilla as the bug was in GTK+, not in Gedit. Sometimes it might be hard for an amateur to guess whether some previously known bug would solve the issue I found.

• What are my options for selling software independently on Windows?

  I am looking to port a tool from the Mac app store over to Windows, the platform where I spend most of my time these days. I've spoken with the author of the original app and we've begun talking about licensing options should I decide to sell the application, and it seems like it would be feasible. I've never sold software independently, let alone on Windows. That I know of, there is not (yet) an equivalent app store for Windows (maybe one coming with Windows 8). Assuming my product was done today and I was ready to go to market, what options do I have for selling software for Windows as an independent developer or Micro-ISV? I know can sell it through my own website and accept PayPal, but are there options that will offer more visibility, similar to that of the Apple app stores? Any options to avoid?
