• does eCryptfs support multiple users?

  I'm new to ecryptfs and I need some clarification on how it works. Suppose there are two root users userA and userB, If I mount some folder under userA: [userA@Dev] $ mount ecryptfs real img now I can visit the img folder to access decrypted data. My questions is: While userA is still in log in state. Can userB login and access the decrypted data? This is currently what I observed on my local machine, but I'm not sure if it was cause by my misconfiguration. If it is the case, how can I avoid other users from accessing the decrypted data while userA is in login state?

• How to design a replay system

  So how would I design a replay system? You may know it from certain games like Warcraft 3 or Starcraft where you can watch the game again after it has been played already. You end up with a relatively small replay file. So my questions are: How to save the data? (custom format?) (small filesize) What shall be saved? How to make it generic so it can be used in other games to record a time period (and not a complete match for example)? Make it possible to forward and rewind (WC3 couldn't rewind as far as I remember)

• SQL SERVER – Not Possible – Delete From Multiple Table – Update Multiple Table in Single Statement

  There are two questions which I get every single day multiple times. In my gmail, I have created standard canned reply for them. Let us see the questions here. I want to delete from multiple table in a single statement how will I do it? I want to update multiple table in a single statement how will I do it? The answer is – No, You cannot and you should not. SQL Server does not support deleting or updating from two tables in a single update. If you want to delete or update two different tables – you may want to write two different delete or update statements for it. This method has many issues – from the consistency of the data to SQL syntax. Now here is the real reason for this blog post – yesterday I was asked this question again and I replied my canned answer saying it is not possible and it should not be any way implemented that day. In the response to my reply I was pointed out to my own blog post where user suggested that I had previously mentioned this is possible and with demo example. Let us go over my conversation – you may find it interesting. Let us call the user DJ. DJ: Pinal, can we delete multiple table in a single statement or with single delete statement? Pinal: No, you cannot and you should not. DJ: Oh okey, if that is the case, why do you suggest to do that? Pinal: (baffled) I am not suggesting that. I am rather suggesting that it is not possible and it should not be possible. DJ: Hmm… but in that case why did you blog about it earlier? Pinal: (What?) No, I did not. I am pretty confident. DJ: Well, I am confident as well. You did. Pinal: In that case, it is my word against your word. Isn’t it? DJ: I have proof. Do you want to see it that you suggest it is possible? Pinal: Yes, I will be delighted too. (After 10 Minutes) DJ: Here are not one but two of your blog posts which talks about it - SQL SERVER – Curious Case of Disappearing Rows – ON UPDATE CASCADE and ON DELETE CASCADE – Part 1 of 2 SQL SERVER – Curious Case of Disappearing Rows – ON UPDATE CASCADE and ON DELETE CASCADE – T-SQL Example – Part 2 of 2 Pinal: Oh! DJ: I know I was correct. Pinal: Well, oh man, I did not mean there what you mean here. DJ: I did not understand can you explain it further. Pinal: Here we go. The example in the other blog is the example of the cascading delete or cascading update. I think you may want to understand the concept of the foreign keys and cascading update/delete. The concept of cascading exists to maintain data integrity. If there primary keys get deleted the update or delete reflects on the foreign key table to maintain the key integrity and data consistency. SQL Server follows ANSI Entry SQL with regard to referential integrity between PrimaryKey and ForeignKey columns which requires the inserting, updating, and deleting of data in related tables to be restricted to values that preserve the integrity. This is all together different concept than deleting multiple values in a single statement. When I hear that someone wants to delete or update multiple table in a single statement what I assume is something very similar to following. DELETE/UPDATE Table 1 (cols) Table 2 (cols) VALUES … which is not valid statement/syntax as well it is not ASNI standards as well. I guess, after this discussion with DJ, I realize I need to do a blog post so I can add the link to this blog post in my canned answer. • What is the best way to construct a "remove multiple items" area (ASP.NET VB) [on hold]

  Lets say for example I have a (variable length) 2 dimensional array of product names and their unique product codes. I can display this list in a datagrid, table etc. (Imagine this as a standard shopping basket type scenario) What I need to do is be able to tick multiple items (?) , then on clicking a submit button, fire an action. The bit im struggling with is how do i: A: programatically display asp:checkboxes for each item (and give them a unique ID) B: know which are ticked on firing the final action (not sure if this question is best suited to the main stack but theres so much activity on there that questions just get lost now!)

  Wow! Wellington is really a wonderful city - except for the weather situation But it was the first time that Roy and me did arrive to a workshop with a ferry boat. We flew in on Friday to Christchurch (btw, this was the longest customs and border control I've ever went through - and I traveled to Israel by Bus via Allenby Bridge from the West Bank some years ago - it took us two hours to go through immigration and customs in the night from Friday to Saturday) and drove up the Southern Island. • Google Webmaster tools and geotargeting at TLD and Folder levels

  Hoping you can help us with this question: We are one Canada’s leading websites with a PR8. For privacy's sake, let's call our main URL www.OurMainWebsite.com As we are expanding globally, we are planning to build a web site to service the US market but want to keep the domain above as is from branding perspective. Questions: Can we keep: www.OurMainWebsite.com as the main Canada site and create a www.OurMainWebsite.com/US as the US site? Can those 2 URL's be geotargetted as per above, and wouldn't the fact that US is a subfolder of the main TLD through things off? can I target a TLD to one country and a subfolder under the TLD to abother? • RC of Entity Framework 4.1 (which includes EF Code First)

  Last week the data team shipped the Release Candidate of Entity Framework 4.1.  You can learn more about it and download it here. EF 4.1 includes the new “EF Code First” option that I’ve blogged about several times in the past.  EF Code First provides a really elegant and clean way to work with data, and enables you to do so without requiring a designer or XML mapping file.  Below are links to some tutorials I’ve written in the past about it: Code First Development with Entity Framework 4.x EF Code First: Custom Database Schema Mapping Using EF Code First with an Existing Database The above tutorials were written against the CTP4 release of EF Code First (and so some APIs might be a little different) – but the concepts and scenarios outlined in them are the same as with the RC. Go Live License Last week’s EF 4.1 RC ships with a “go live” license that enables you to use it in production environments.  The final release of EF 4.1 will ship within the next 4 weeks and will be 100% API compatible with the RC release. Improvements with the RC The RC includes several improvements and enhancements.  The EF team has a good blog post summarizing the RC changes.  Scott Hanselman also has a nice video interview with the data team that talks more about the release. One of my favorite improvements introduced with last week’s RC is its support for medium trust security.  This enables you to use EF 4.1 (and code-first) within low-cost ASP.NET shared hosting web environments – without requiring a hoster to install anything to use it. EF 4.1 also now supports validation with not only code-first scenarios, but also model-first and database-first workflows.  Upgrading from previous releases The RC does include a few API tweaks and changes from the prior CTP builds.  Read the release notes that come with the release to get a more detailed listing of the changes. John Papa also has an excellent Upgrading to EF 4.1 RC blog post that describes the steps he took when upgrading a large project he wrote with the previous CTP5 release.  The work to upgrade is pretty straight forward and easy – use his write-up as a guide on how to quickly update projects of your own. NuGet Package Rename One of the changes that the data team made between the CTP5 and RC releases was to rename the NuGet package name from “EFCodeFirst” to “EntityFramework”. They decided to make this change since the EF 4.1 release now includes several additions above and beyond just code first. If you already have installed the “EFCodeFirst” NuGet package, you’ll want to uninstall it and then install the new “EntityFramework” NuGet package.  John Papa’s blog post details the exact steps on how to do this (it only takes ~20 seconds to do this). More EF Tutorials Julie Lerman has created some nice whitepapers and tutorials for MSDN that show using the new EF4 and EF 4.1 feature set. Click here to find links to read and watch them. Summary I’m really excited about the EF 4.1 release that will be shipping next month.  It significantly improves the Entity Framework, and makes it even easier and cleaner to work with data inside of .NET.  You can take advantage of it within all ASP.NET projects (including both Web Forms and MVC), within client projects using Windows Forms and WPF, and within other project types like WCF, Console and Services.  You can use NuGet to easily install it within all of them.   Yes, I read this article. But my questions are: I would like to try this, but I see they've written there something with "gnome" in the script. In my Ubuntu, 13.04, I have Unity. What do I do? I would have to do this for four x four keyboard layouts (to have 13 keyboard layouts). Your script, however, is designed for two x four keyboard layouts. How do I get the four x four? I would really appreciate your tips and hints on this. And I would kindly ask you to keep it simple, if possible, because I'm really no expert in both Ubuntu and computers in general.

• How to convincing Programmers that 'being in the zone' [coding] isn't always beneficial for the project?

  In this book review: http://books.slashdot.org/story/11/06/13/1251216/Book-Review-The-Clean-Coder?utm_source=slashdot&utm_medium=twitter Chapter 4 talks about the coding process itself. One of the hardest statements the book makes here is to stay out of "the zone" when coding. Bob asserts that you lose parts of the big picture when you go down to that level. While I may struggle with that assertion, I do agree with his next statement that debugging time is expensive, so you should avoid having to do debugger-driven development whenever possible. He finishes the chapter with examples of pacing yourself (walking away, taking a shower) and how to deal with being late on your projects (remembering that hope is not a plan, and being clear about the impact of overtime) along with a reminder that it is good to both give and receive help, whether it be small questions or mentoring others. they talk about how 'being in the zone' - can actually be detrimental to the project. How do you convince your team members that this is the case?

• pulseaudio on ubuntu server

  I am running ubuntu server, and trying to get pulseaudio working. I followed the instructions at How do I run PulseAudio in a headless server installation? At the moment, pacmd list-cards is reporting 0 cards, and I suspect this has something to do with the fact aplay is only playing sound when I run it as sudo. As far as I can tell, this means the the kernel module for my sound card is in fact loaded. I have already tried adding my user to the "audio" group, but this does not help. My questions are 1) How do I get aplay to work without running it as sudo 2) Is there anything special I need to do to make pulseaudio work at this point.

For example, one of the scenarios goes: the store cashier sells an item, the transaction data is sent to Data management system. Now, I am writing a functional design for the scenario which deals with mapping XML fields between our system and the data management system. Question : I was wondering if some one had to deal with writing use cases or extension use cases for mapping XML fields between two systems? (There is no XSLT involved) and if you used a table to represent the fields mapping (example is below) or any other visualization tool which does not break the bank ? I searched many questions on SO and here but nothing came close to my requirement.

Im doing a project for the university for storing baseball players statitics, but from baseball data I have to calculate the score by year for the player who is beign displayed. The background is, lets say 10, 000 users hit the player "Alex Rodriguez", the application have to calculate 10, 000 the A-Rod stats by years intead of just read it from some where is temporal saved. Here I go: What is the best method for caching this type of data? Do I have to used the same database, and some temporal values on the same database, or create a Web Service for that? What reading about web caching so you recommend?

• Can an agile shop every really score 12 on the Joel Test?

  I really like the Joel test, use it myself, and encourage my staff and interviewees to consider it carefully. However I don't think I can ever score more than 9 because a few points seem to contradict the Agile Manifesto, XP and TDD, which are the bedrocks of my world. Specifically the questions about schedule, specs, testers and quiet working conditions run counter to what we are trying to create and the values that we have adopted in being genuinely agile. So my question is whether it is possible for a true Agile shop to score 12?

• My Codemash 2011 Retrospective

  I just got back from Codemash yesterday, and still on an adrenaline buzz. Here's my take on this years encounter: The Awesome Nearly everybody in one place Codemash is the ultimate place to catch up with community friends. This is my 3rd year visiting and I've got to know a great number of very cool people through various conferences, Give Camps and other community events. I'm finding more and more that Codemash is the best place to catch up with everybody regardless of technology interest or location. Of course I always make a whole bunch more friends while I'm there! Yay! Open Spaced I found the open spaces didn't work so well last year. This year things went a lot smoother and the topics were engaging and fresh. While I miss Alan Steven's approach of running it like an agile project, it was very cool to see that it evolving. Laptops were often cracked open, not just once but frequently! For example: Jasmine - Paired on a javascript kata using the Jasmine javascript test runner J - Sat in on a J demo from local J enthusiast, Tracy Harms Watir - More pairing, this time using Ruby with the watir-webdriver through cucumber. I'd mostly forgotten that Cucumber runs just fine without Rails. It made a change to do without. The other spaces were engaging too, but I think that's enough for that topic. Javascript Shenanigans I've already mentioned that I attended a Jasmine kata session. Jasmine is close to my heart right now every since I discovered it while on the hunt for a decent Javascript testing framework for a javascript koans project earlier this year. Well, it also got covered in the Java Precompiler and Pillar's vendor session, which was great to see. Node.js was also a reoccurring theme. Node.js in a nutshell? It's an extremely scalable Event based I/O server which runs on Javascript. I'd already encountered through a Startup Weekend project and have been noticing increasing interest of late. After encountering more node.js driven excitement from my peers at codemash I absolutely had to attend the open space on it. At least 20 people turned up and by the end we had some answers, a whole ton of new questions and an impromptu user group in the form of a twitter channel (#nodemash). I have no idea where this is going to go or how big it is going to become, but if it can cross the chasm into the enterprise it could become huge... Scala Koans I'm a bit of a Koans addict, and I really need more exposure to functional languages so I gave the Scala Koans precompiler a try. Great fun! I'm really glad I attended because I found I had a whole ton of questions. Currently the koans are available here, and the answers are here. Opportunities While we're on the subject can we change the subject now? Hai Gregory, You really need to keep the drinking for later in the day. I mean seriously, you're 34 and you still do this every single time! Sure, you made it to Chad Fowler keynote ok, but you looking a rather pale weren't you? Also might have been nice to attend 'Netflicks in the Cloud' instead of 'Sleeping It Off For People Who Should Know Better'. Kthxbye PS: Stop talking to yourself Not that I entirely regret it, I've had some of my greatest insights through late night drunken conversations at the CodeMash bar. Just might be nice to reign it in a little and get something out of the next morning too. Diversity This is something that is in the back of my mind because of conversations at Codemash as well as throughout the year; I'm realizing more and more how discouraging the IT profession is for women. I notice in the community there has been a lot of attention paid to stamping out harrasment, which is good, but there also seems to be a massive PR issue. I really don't have any solutions, but I figure it can't hurt to pay more attention to whats going on... And in Other News I now have a picture of Chad Fowler giving me more cowbell! Sadly I managed to lose the cowbell later on. Hopefully it's gone to a Better Place. The Womack Family Band joined in with the musicians jam this year. There's my cowbell again! Why must you hide from me? I also finally went in the water for the first time in all the I've been coming to codemash. Why did I wait so long?!?

• Do you actively look for a better job?

  ...Even though you're basically happy where you are? I've been thinking for a while that it might be a good idea to look around, but how do you go about doing it? Do you hide the fact from your employer? What do you tell the recruiters? Can you play your current employer out against the new recruiter or vice versa, and how do you do that? Any pitfalls? Edit: I've bolded the questions that people haven't really answered yet.
