• Stuck on Ubuntu startup screen (5 orange bullets)

  I recently download Ubuntu 12.04 LTS onto my Macbook Pro 5-5. Everything worked seamlessly, save for the brightness control. I couldn't change the screen brightness from the hardware buttons, nor from the system preferences. To fix it, I used the instructions here: MacbookPro 5-5 LCD Brightness Control At #2, I restarted my laptop, only to see that it went straight to the Ubuntu Startup Screen, with the 5 orange dots (Usually they all startoff white, then turn orange to indicate progress). From there, I tried controlling the brightness from the keyboard, and it worked, but sadly, my computer is still stuck on the loading screen. (Yes, I have tried manually restarting it) Could you please help? Thank you in advance

• Bug once in a while,but high priority

  I am working on a CNC (computer numerical control) project which cuts shapes into metal with help of laser. Now my problem is once in a while (1-2 times in 20 odd days) the cutting goes wrong or not according to what is set. But this causes loss so the client is not very happy about it. I tried to find out the the cause of it by Including log files Debugging Repeating the same environment. But it wont repeat. A pause and continue operation will again make it to run smoothly with the bug reappearing. How do I tackle this issue? Should I state it as a Hardware Problem?

• How is Sencha Touch performing on Android in practice ?

  Hi I'm just about to start a project using Sencha Touch, and just done some minor testing on my HTC desire device. All tutorial videos at Vimeo seems to be using an iPhone emulator running on a Mac. Im not sure how fast this emulator is compared to a real iPhone device or even an real Android device, but from what i have experienced, it seems that my HTC desire is not performing that nicly as this emulator. All animations (sliding, fading, etc) seems abit laggy. You can easily notice that the FPS is much less than on the Vimeo videos. HTC desire is a relativly new and modern Android 2.2 phone, running with decent hardware, so im wondering if Sencha Touch is "ready" for the Android platform. Anybody with practical experience with Android and Sencha Touch ?

• AHCI Hotswap in Lucid Server

  Does Lucid support hotswapping of AHCI devices? Is there anything more to it than simply unmounting all filesystems on the drive to be disconnected and plugging in the new disk? 00:1f.2 SATA controller: Intel Corporation 82801IR/IO/IH (ICH9R/DO/DH) 6 port SATA AHCI Controller (rev 02) is the controller I'm working with. BIOS is set to AHCI. I also tried simply unmounting and unplugging. That seemed to work fine. Plugging in a new drive locked up the system. AHCI kernel module is also loaded. I've also looked at the Raid WIKI on kernel.org which talks about hardware requirements for AHCI HotSwapping of disks. My drives and cables all appear to meet the criteria, but most of that info pertains to the electrical side (grounding, etc...).

• What Counts for a DBA: Humility

  In football (the American sort, naturally,) there are a select group of players who really hope to never have their names called during the game. They are members of the offensive line, and their job is to protect other players so they can deliver the ball to the goal to score points. When you do hear their name called, it is usually because they made a mistake and the player that they were supposed to protect ended up flat on his back admiring the clouds in the sky instead of advancing towards the goal to scoring point. Even on the rare occasion their name is called for a good reason, it is usually because they were making up for a teammate who had made a mistake and they covered up for them. The role of offensive lineman is a very good analogy for the role of the admin DBA. As a DBA, you are called on to be barely visible and rarely heard, protecting the company data assets tenaciously, even though the enemies to our craft surround us on all sides:. Developers: Cries of ‘foul!’ often ensue when the DBA says that they want data integrity to be stringently enforced and that documentation is needed so they can support systems, mostly because every error occurrence in the enterprise will be initially blamed on the database and fall to the DBA to troubleshoot. Insisting too loudly may bring those cries of ‘foul’ that somewhat remind you of when your 2 year old daughter didn't want to go to bed. The result of this petulance is that the next "enemy" gets involved. Managers: The concerns that motivate DBAs to argue will not excite the kind of manager who gets his technical knowledge from a glossy magazine filled with buzzwords, charts, and pretty pictures. However, the other programmers in the organization will tickle the buzzword void with a stream of new-sounding ideas and technologies constantly, along with warnings that if we did care about data integrity and document things, the budget would explode! In contrast, the arguments for integrity of data and supportability tend to be about as exciting as watching grass grow, and far too many manager types seem to prefer to smoke it than watch it. Packaged Applications: The DBA is rarely given a chance to review a new application that is being demonstrated for the enterprise, and rarer still is the DBA that gets a veto of an application because the database it uses has clearly been created by an architect that won't read a data modeling book because he is already married. More often than not this leads to hours of work for the DBA trying to performance-tune a database with a menagerie of rules that must be followed to stay within the  application support agreement, such as no changing indexes on a third party schema even though there are 10 billion rows instead of the 10 thousand when the system was last optimized. Hardware Failures: Physical disks, networking devices, memory, and backup devices all come with a measure known as ‘mean time before failure’ and it is never listed in centuries or eons. More like years, and the term ‘mean’ indicates that half of the devices are expected to fail before that, which by my calendar means any hour of any day that it wants to fail it will. But the DBA sucks it up and does the task at hand with a humility that makes them nearly invisible to all but the most observant person in the organization. The best DBAs I know are so proactive in their relentless pursuit of perfection that they detect many of the bugs (which they seldom caused) in the system well before they become a problem. In the end the DBA gets noticed for one of same two reasons as the offensive lineman. You make a mistake, like dropping a critical production database that had never been backed up; or when a system crashes for any reason whatsoever and they are on the spot with troubleshooting and system restoration plans that have been well thought out, tested, and tested again. Not because there is any glory in it, but because it is what they do.   Note: The characteristics of the professions referred to in this blog are meant to be overstated stereotypes for humorous effect, and even some DBAs aren't quite this perfect. If you are reading this far and haven’t hand written a 10 page flaming comment about how you are a _______ and you aren’t like this, that is awesome. Not every situation applies to everyone, but if you have never worked with a bad packaged app, a magazine trained manager, programmers that aren’t team players, or hardware that occasionally failed, relax and go have a unicorn sandwich before you wake up.

• Cursor freezes for 5 secs every now and then

  I've installed Ubuntu 11.04 (64bit) on my new Thinkpad Edge 11 laptop from Lenovo with the following specs: Processor type AMD Athlon II Neo Processor Speed 1.8 GHz Memory Type DDR3 SDRAM RAM 2048 MB Hard Drive Type HDD Harddisk 250 GB Grafic processor ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6310 Ubuntu has found all my hardware and it works perfectly. I have one irritating problem though: From time to time (sometimes every minute, other times every hour)the cursor freezes for about 5 sec. This happens independently from the number of processes running on the laptop. It's only the cursor that freezes - I can still tab between windows and use the keyboard. I've installed GPointingDeviceSettings, activating the trackpoint, which btw works perfectly. Also I have installed the ATI Catalyst proprietary display driver. Anyone has an idea of whats wrong? • Asus 1215n GPU driver/s don't give me a "full" OS experience

  I'm use to not having specific drivers from a manufacture on my laptop when running a Linux OS and that has always been fine - there's been adequate FOSS drivers for my needs and it hasn't ruined any of my OS experience. When I bought an Asus 1215n one of the upsides to the hardware seemed to be the switchable GPU that could give lots of performance or lots more battery life and would switch on-the-fly... with Windows of course. Seems that the Nvidia driver are crap and people advise not installing them. I have some sort of workaround for vga_switcharoo (?) and the on-the-fly nature of the GPUs has turned in to a manual one :( The worst bit though (aside from shorter battery life) is the web experience with HTML5. If I visit Mozilla's Web O'Wonder site I'm told I don't have WebGL working due to driver issues. This really blows - is it possible that proprietary drivers can now ruin my web experience too?!

• Can't set 1280x1024 with Nvidia Geforce 8400 GS

  I've just installed 10.04 LTS using the Windows installer. The system hangs during boot; the splash screen is frozen and it accepts neither Ctrl+Alt+F2 nor Ctrl+Alt+Del, only a hard reset. (I'm a linux noob.) When I edit the default Grub boot option to omit quiet splash, it gets to the point saying * setting sensors limit [OK] _ and there it stays. I can only get to the desktop using the Grub recovery boot option, of course with a lower resolution (800x600) but everything else seems to work fine. As I said, this is a new install. The only thing I've done is to use the Update Manager to get everything up to date, and activate the newest Nvidia driver using the "Hardware drivers" window. I had a similar problem when I installed 9.04 a year ago, and at that time posted this question with an answer that worked - this doesn't work with 10.04. Running nvidia-xconfig to create a new xorg.conf didn't fix it either (while in Recovery boot).

• Installing wireless drivers without internet access [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How can I install and download drivers without internet? (This is related to my other question; my approach there didn't work.) My friend has (I'm quite sure) a Broadcom wireless chipset. However, he doesn't have any wired internet access on the machine, so his only option is to boot into Windows (he is using Wubi) and download packages there. This means we can't use the Hardware Drivers dialog to install the drivers. He can't fetch the repository information, so the Broadcom driver packages aren't showing up in Synaptic. Is there any way to get Wi-Fi working?

• Black screen after select installing on a Dell Inspiron 14z

  I'm trying to do a dual boot on my Dell Inspiron 14z notebook, but I always get a black screen after selecting Install Ubuntu. I've tried to add nomodeset and acpi_osi="Linux" to the boot options, but it doesn't change anything. The hardware: 3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-3517U processor (4M Cache, up to 3.0 GHz) 8GB2 Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1600MHz 500GB 5400 RPM SATA HDD and 32GB mSATA SSD AMD Radeon HD7570M 1GB This question isn't duplicated. • HD Video Peformance Unacceptable

  Was wondering if anyone could help me boost HD 1080p video performance on my machine? I've got an AMD Athlon X2 Dual Core processor, 2 gb RAM & an ATI Radeon 5450 video card. I've installed the latest ATI Catalyst drivers, I installed the hardware acceleration things and linked them (I believe) to VLC. Still, it's still not running as well as I would like. Any thoughts or suggestions? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

• High Availability for IaaS, PaaS and SaaS in the Cloud

  Outages, natural disasters and unforeseen events have proved that even in a distributed architecture, you need to plan for High Availability (HA). In this entry I'll explain a few considerations for HA within Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS). In a separate post I'll talk more about Disaster Recovery (DR), since each paradigm has a different way to handle that. Planning for HA in IaaS IaaS involves Virtual Machines - so in effect, an HA strategy here takes on many of the same characteristics as it would on-premises. The primary difference is that the vendor controls the hardware, so you need to verify what they do for things like local redundancy and so on from the hardware perspective. As far as what you can control and plan for, the primary factors fall into three areas: multiple instances, geographical dispersion and task-switching. In almost every cloud vendor I've studied, to ensure your application will be protected by any level of HA, you need to have at least two of the Instances (VM's) running. This makes sense, but you might assume that the vendor just takes care of that for you - they don't. If a single VM goes down (for whatever reason) then the access to it is lost. Depending on multiple factors, you might be able to recover the data, but you should assume that you can't. You should keep a sync to another location (perhaps the vendor's storage system in another geographic datacenter or to a local location) to ensure you can continue to serve your clients. You'll also need to host the same VM's in another geographical location. Everything from a vendor outage to a network path problem could prevent your users from reaching the system, so you need to have multiple locations to handle this. This means that you'll have to figure out how to manage state between the geo's. If the system goes down in the middle of a transaction, you need to figure out what part of the process the system was in, and then re-create or transfer that state to the second set of systems. If you didn't write the software yourself, this is non-trivial. You'll also need a manual or automatic process to detect the failure and re-route the traffic to your secondary location. You could flip a DNS entry (if your application can tolerate that) or invoke another process to alias the first system to the second, such as load-balancing and so on. There are many options, but all of them involve coding the state into the application layer. If you've simply moved a state-ful application to VM's, you may not be able to easily implement an HA solution. Planning for HA in PaaS Implementing HA in PaaS is a bit simpler, since it's built on the concept of stateless applications deployment. Once again, you need at least two copies of each element in the solution (web roles, worker roles, etc.) to remain available in a single datacenter. Also, you need to deploy the application again in a separate geo, but the advantage here is that you could work out a "shared storage" model such that state is auto-balanced across the world. In fact, you don't have to maintain a "DR" site, the alternate location can be live and serving clients, and only take on extra load if the other site is not available. In Windows Azure, you can use the Traffic Manager service top route the requests as a type of auto balancer. Even with these benefits, I recommend a second backup of storage in another geographic location. Storage is inexpensive; and that second copy can be used for not only HA but DR. Planning for HA in SaaS In Software-as-a-Service (such as Office 365, or Hadoop in Windows Azure) You have far less control over the HA solution, although you still maintain the responsibility to ensure you have it. Since each SaaS is different, check with the vendor on the solution for HA - and make sure you understand what they do and what you are responsible for. They may have no HA for that solution, or pin it to a particular geo, or perhaps they have a massive HA built in with automatic load balancing (which is often the case).   All of these options (with the exception of SaaS) involve higher costs for the design. Do not sacrifice reliability for cost - that will always cost you more in the end. Build in the redundancy and HA at the very outset of the project - if you try to tack it on later in the process the business will push back and potentially not implement HA. • Unity and games don't work on new Thinkpad T420

  Here's my setup: Lenovo ThinkPad T420, brand new NVIDIA Graphics Card 4GB of Ram 128GB Solid State Drive Intel Core i5 Processor Given these specs, there's no reason games and Unity shouldn't be working. The strange thing is that both do work when I run from a live USB, but not when Ubuntu is installed to the hard drive. Is there something different with the 3D capabilities of running from the computer as opposed to running from the live USB? Edit: Some more information: When I log in for the first time when running from the hard drive, Ubuntu says "It seems that you do not have the hardware required to run Unity. Please choose Ubuntu Classic at the login screen and you will be using the traditional environment."

• Toshiba satellite L500 no Wifi anymore!

  I have a Toshiba Satellite L500 with Ubuntu 12.04 and its wifi suddenly stopped working!! I've never seen like that before.. I tried also using external USB wifis but no success. I am not able to turn it on with the function keys nor using rfkill commands and similar WLAN manipulator Commands in the terminal! It was working before for at least 4-5 months!! The computer says it's turned off by hardware. I checked it and the Driver is fine. So why can i not use any Wifi on my computer?? Why it is suddenly disabled? I checked the BIOS too there is enabled the WLAN. I spent 10 hours for searching for solutions but i am out of ideas!!! Please Help!

• How to emulate Mode 13h in a modern 3D renderer?

  I was indulging in nostalgia and remembered the first game I created, which used Mode 13h. This mode was really simple to work with, since it was essentially just an array of bytes with an element for each pixel on the screen (using an indexed color scheme). So I thought it might be fun to create something nowadays under these restrictions, but on modern hardware. The API could be as simple as: public class Mode13h { public byte[] VideoMemory = new byte[320 * 200]; public Color[] Palette = new Color[256]; } Now I'm wondering what would be the best way to get this data on the screen, using something like XNA / DirectX / OpenGL. The only solution I could think of was to create a texture with the same size as the VideoMemory array, write the contents of VideoMemory to it every frame, then render that texture in a full screen quad with the correct aspect ratio and using point texture filtering for that retro look. Is there a better way?

  I've spent the past few months learning about stack based virtual machines, parsers, compilers, and some elementary things about hardware architecture. I've also written a few parsers and compilers for C like languages to understand the generic parser/compiler pipeline. Now I'd like to take my understanding further by learning about optimizing compilers and JIT compilers but I'm having a hard time finding material at the right level. I don't yet understand enough to dive into a code base like PyPy or LuaJIT but I also know more than what most introductory compiler books have to offer. So what are some good books for an intermediate beginner like to me to look into?

• Cinnamon Settings blank after update

  Using Ubuntu 12.04 with the cinnamon desktop, I installed the most recent updates and now when I open "System Settings" the entire window appears as a blank white screen. The headers for APPEARANCE, PREFERENCES, and HARDWARE are present, but the usual icons for *Background, *Hot Corners, *Printers, etc. are no longer visible. Some of these settings can still be altered via the terminal: cinnamon-settings backgrounds cinnamon-settings applets cinnamon-settings mouse and touchpad But other commands, such as cinnamon-settings hot corners are met with an error. This is obviously a problem with cinnamon, so I just want to bring it to attention and find out when they plan on fixing the bug. A workaround can be found on the web, but it seems way to risky to rely on.

• how to find available wireless networks

  I'm using an HP Pavilion dv6000 I've looked at other answers similar to this question how ever when I look at my network symbol it doesn't say anything that the answer below says "Make sure that your wifi hardware switch is on or not. It is either F2 or F12 or near to it. Once the switch is enabled, there is a small fan-like applet on the top panel (Gnome Network Manager), fourth from the right. Click on it and if there is no tick mark on the option 'Enable Wireless', enable it. Wait till your wifi connection name appears." it how says 'Enable Networking' my wi-fi switch is on and I've tried using terminal to kill the applet as another answer suggests trying. Does anyone have any other ideas that might help? Just in case anybodies curious as to how I'm posting this I'm on my other ubuntu laptop that's running an older version.
