• Can any framework project use Struts-taglib

  I have read here that one disadvantage that some may find with using Spring MVC over Struts is that Struts has tags that output HTML code, while Spring has tags that don't generate HTML. My question is can't you just use the Struts tag-lib in a Spring MVC project (or any other kind of framework project), by dropping the right jar into the WEB-INF/lib folder? Any clarification is appreciated, thanks.

• Use fileupload as template field in a details view

  I have an admin page where a user will select a document path and add that path to a certain column of a database. I am using a fileupload on the page where they can find the document and copy the path and then paste it into the details view. • What are some good/reputable/widely-used libraries written in VB.NET?

  Generally speaking, when VB.NET and C# are compared, there is a lot of strong support for C#, accompanied by some bashing of VB.NET until a respected developer comes along and acts as The Voice Of Reason, pointing out that while VB prior to VB.NET had its fair share of issues, VB.NET is really a very strong, fully OOP language that is, feature-wise, right about on par with C# (with the exception of certain things like a full-bodied lamba syntax [pre-VB10] or the yield keyword, as many C# faithfuls are quick to point out). I myself, having written plenty of code in both VB.NET and C#, fall squarely in the "I prefer C#, but don't consider VB.NET any less of a language" camp. However, one thing I have noticed is that when it comes to respected and/or widely-used libraries for .NET, everyting is written in C#. Or at least that's been my impression. This strikes me as a little strange because, aside from the abovementioned sprinkling of nice features (in particular the yield keyword), I tend to view the VB.NET/C# divide as primarily a matter of personal taste. Obviously, plenty of developers prefer C#. But I personally know some developers (good ones) who prefer VB.NET, which would lead me to suspect that surely some libraries (good ones) would be written in VB.NET. They must be out there, and I just haven't found them. What are some good libraries that've been written in VB.NET? The best would be open source, as that would allow interested developers to take a look at some good VB.NET code and see how effective the language can be when used properly. But I'd be interested to know about any libraries at all, particularly reputable ones.

• Setting Session Variable from UpdatePanel

  I am using ASP.NET 2.0 AJAX Extensions 1.0 with the version v1.0.20229 of the AJAX Control Toolkit (which to my knowledge is the latest for .NET 2.0/Visual Studio 2005). My web page (aspx) has a DropDownList control on an UpdatePanel. In the handler for the DropDownList's SelectedIndexChanged event I attempt to set a session variable. The first time the event is fired, I get a Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManagerParserErrorException: "The message received from the server could not be parsed". If I continue, subsequent SelectedIndexChanged's are handled successfully. I have stumbled upon a solution whereby if I initialise the session variable in my Page_Load (so the event handler is just setting the value of a session variable that already exists as opposed to creating a new one) the problem goes away. I'm happy to do this, but I'm curious as to exactly what the underlying cause is. Can anyone explain? (My suspicion is that setting the session variable receives a response from the server which is then returned to the 'caller', but it's not the sort of response it knows how to deal with causing the exception?) • How to debug UrlRewriter.NET?

  I have looked at their help page it seems like I can register a debug logger that outputs information to the 'standard ASP.NET debug window'. My problem is I don't know what that means, if it means the debug output window in Visual Studio (where you see build output, debug output and more) I am not seeing any UrlRewriter debug output. The rules are working (mostly) I just want to get more debug output to fix issues. I added the register call to the rewriter section like this: <rewriter> <register logger="Intelligencia.UrlRewriter.Logging.DebugLogger, Intelligencia.UrlRewriter" /> .... </rewriter> I am hosting this website locally in IIS on Vista, to debug it I attach the debugger to the w3wp process. Other selected parts from the web.config" <compilation debug="true"> <assemblies> ... </assemblies> </compilation> <trace enabled="true"/> Where should I see the debug output from UrlRewriter.NET? If it is in the Visual Studio debug output window, any ideas why I am not seeing it there?

• T4MVC and duplicate controller names in different areas

  In my application I have controller named Snippets both in default area (in application root) and in my area called Manage. I use T4MVC and custom routes, like this: routes.MapRoute( "Feed", "feed/", MVC.Snippets.Rss() ); And I get this error: Multiple types were found that match the controller named 'snippets'. This can happen if the route that services this request ('{controller}/{action}/{id}/') does not specify namespaces to search for a controller that matches the request. If this is the case, register this route by calling an overload of the 'MapRoute' method that takes a 'namespaces' parameter. The request for 'snippets' has found the following matching controllers: Snippets.Controllers.SnippetsController Snippets.Areas.Manage.Controllers.SnippetsController I know that there are overloads for MapRoute that take namespaces argument, but there are no such overloads with T4MVC support. May be I'm missing something? The possible syntax can be: routes.MapRoute( "Feed", "feed/", MVC.Snippets.Rss(), new string[] {"Snippets.Controllers"} ); or, it seems quite good to me to have namespace as T4MVC property: routes.MapRoute( "Feed", "feed/", MVC.Snippets.Rss(), new string[] {MVC.Snippets.Namespace} ); Thanks in advance!

• Is there a way to automatically load navigational property using the .NET Entity Framework?

  Stepping away more and more from writing SQL for my applications, I decided to give the Entity Framework a try. However, I've run into something I believe is causing me to write more code than I think is strictly necessary. When I accessed some navigational properties, I discovered that all many-to-one relations (simple references) were null and all one-to-many and many-to-many relations (EntityCollections) were empty. For example: I have a User with a reference to a Group. When I have retieved a User, by using a simple select-by-id, the Group property is null. If I want to access the Group I have to manually load it (using User.GroupReference.Load()). So I added a GetGroup() method in User which checks whether the Group is loaded already and, if not, does so and then returns the Group. Now this will result in a lot of highly similar methods for all navigational properties. And it all results in the navigational properties not being used, only my custom-made Get"PropertyName"() method's are now being used. I don't want to expand my queries (linq to entities) to immediately load all these properties, because it's not always known at first what is needed. And besides, it would cause a lot of queries to have to be made. Is there a way to configure the Entity Framework to load these objects when they happen to not be present? So when I access User.Group and the group is not loaded yet, it is loaded automatically? Or am I stuck using my own Get"PropertyName"() method's as long as I'm trying to load objects only on demand (or "just-in-time")? Some extra info: I'm using VS2008 SP1 with .NET 3.5 SP1. The Entity Framework I'm using is the one that got shipped with it.

• ASP.NET MVC returning ContentResult using Ajax form - how to preserve whitespace?

  In my application users can enter commands that are executed on the server. The results are added to a session object. I then stuff the session object into ViewData and add it to a textarea. When done with a standard HTML form whitespace is preserved. However, when I swap this out for an ajax form (Ajax.BeginForm) and return the result as ContentResult, the whitespace is removed. • Macbook OSX applications crashing on startup

  Closed my computer last night, went home. Opened it and it had restarted. Now when I open a couple programs such as Adobe Fireworks or Appcelerator Titanium they throw up a nasty error like below. Other programs (Chrome, Firefox, Textmate, Versions) works fine. Any thoughts on this? I haven't owned my Macbook long so I'm not even aware of the right tools or places to look to track this down. Any help would be most appreciated. It's making it hard to get my work done :] If it helps at all both those programs were probably open when it restarted. From the look of it I'm not sure if it's a permissions error or something? I completely re-installed on of the applications Titanium. Didn't seem to help.   I'm running CR XI, and accessing .RPT files through a ReportViewer in my ASP.NET pages. When the .RPT file is hardcoded with my production server, and I open it on my training server with the code above (and the web.config has the training server in the connection string), I get the ol: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. And then if I go into the .RPT file, and change over the datasource to the training server, and try to open it again, it works fine. Why doesn't the code above overwrite the .RPT files datasource? • Has MSDN Dropped Compact Framework already?

  MSDN Documentation used to indicate if a method was supported on the compact framework. But now I can't find that info anymore. I know that Microsoft has dropped Compact Framework like a hot potato, but I did not know that they had ripped it out of the docs. As examples of what I am talking about here is a link to the Graphics Members. They used to show which methods were supported in the Compact Framework next to each method. Now they do not. Also, here are two methods: Graphics.MeasureString Method (String, Font, Int32) Graphics.MeasureString Method (String, Font) The first is not supported in the compact framework, but the second is. But the docs don't tell you that (at least not at the bottom where they used to). Am I missing something? Is there a way to still get this info?

• asp.net ModalPopupExtender : need to show scroll bar when overflow

• How would you validate a checkbox in ASP.Net MVC 2?

  Using MVC2, I have a simple ViewModel that contains a bool field that is rendered on the view as a checkbox. I would like to validate that the user checked the box. The [Required] attribute on my ViewModel doesn't seem to do the trick. I believe this is because the unchecked checkbox form field is not actually transmitted back during the POST, and therefore the validation doesn't run on it. Is there a standard way to handle checkbox "required" validation in MVC2? or do I have to write a custom validator for it? I suspect the custom validator won't get executed either for the reason mentioned above. Am I stuck checking for it explicitly in my controller? That seems messy... Any guidance would be appreciated. • Does Sandcastle support Entity Framework Partial Classes?

  I am attempting to use Sandcastle (and Sandcastle Help File Builder) to do some "auto-documentation" of some classes I am using. The classes that are giving me trouble are some partial classes on Entity Framework items that add methods and properties to those Framework items. The triple slash comments don't appear to come through on the methods and properties created in the partial classes. I have out how to get xml documentation of the base properties using the short summary and long description fields on the .emdx editor, but that doesn't provide a solution for the items in the partial classes. Is this possible? Is it perhaps just settings that I'm not setting correctly to pick up the partial classes? Does Sandcastle do partial classes in non-Entity Framework settings? Is what I'm doing even possible (has anyone else successfully used the xml created from triple slash comments to create documentation on entity framework partial classes, and if so how did you do that)? Any assistance is appreciated

• MacBook OS X applications crashing on startup

  Closed my computer last night, went home. Opened it and it had restarted. Now when I open a couple programs such as Adobe Fireworks or Appcelerator Titanium they throw up a nasty error like below. Other programs (Chrome, Firefox, Textmate, Versions) work fine. Any thoughts on this? I haven't owned my MacBook long so I'm not even aware of the right tools or places to look to track this down. Any help would be most appreciated. It's making it hard to get my work done :] If it helps at all both those programs were probably open when it restarted.   I'm using linq to SQL and MVC2 with data annotations and I'm having some problems on validation of some types. For example: [DisplayName("Geplande sessies")] [PositiefGeheelGetal(ErrorMessage = "Ongeldige ingave. Positief geheel getal verwacht")] public string Proj_GeplandeSessies { get; set; } This is an integer, and I'm validating to get a positive number from the form. public class PositiefGeheelGetalAttribute : RegularExpressionAttribute { public PositiefGeheelGetalAttribute() : base(@"\d{1,7}") { } } Now the problem is that when I write text in the input, I don't get to see THIS error, but I get the errormessage from the modelbinder saying "The value 'Tomorrow' is not valid for Geplande sessies." What I really want is that my self-written error messages show up on the screen. I have the same problem with a DateTime, which i want the users to write in the specific form 'dd/MM/yyyy' and i have a regex for that. but again, by the time the data-annotations do their job, all i get is a DateTime Object, and not the original string. So if the input is not a date, the regex does not even run, cos the data annotations just get a null, cos the model binder couldn't make it to a DateTime. Does anyone have an idea how to make this work?
