  • Continuous Integration, what are the strategies to manage binary content?

    Currently we are testing various configurations between Feature Branching and CI with Feature toggling. I can see there are several viable options out there for the code, but I also know that CI totally relies on the possibility to merge the code. So I wonder, how do you manage CI with binary data, like art assets? I can also see another problem: all the code can be tested before to commit, I can even validate the data before to commit, but how can I test the art?! Should I use another methodology for art content?

  • F# Objects &ndash; Integration with the other .Net Languages &ndash; Part 2

    So in part one of my posting I covered the real basics of object creation. Today I will hopefully dig a little deeper… My expert F# book brings up an interesting point – properties in F# are just syntactic sugar for method calls. This makes sense… for instance assume I had the following object with the property exposed called Firstname. type Person(Firstname : string, Lastname : string) = member v.Firstname = Firstname I could extend the Firstname property with the following code and everything would be hunky dory… type Person(Firstname : string, Lastname : string) = member v.Firstname = Console.WriteLine("Side Effect") Firstname   All that this would do is each time I use the property Firstname, I would see the side effect printed to the screen saying “Side Effect”. Member methods have a very similar look & feel to properties, in fact the only difference really is that you declare that parameters are being passed in. type Person(Firstname : string, Lastname : string) = member v.FullName(middleName) = Firstname + " " + middleName + " " + Lastname   In the code above, FullName requires the parameter middleName, and if viewed from another project in C# would show as a method and not a property. Precomputation Optimizations Okay, so something that is obvious once you think of it but that poses an interesting side effect of mutable value holders is pre-computation of results. All it is, is a slight difference in code but can result in quite a huge saving in performance. Basically pre-computation means you would not need to compute a value every time a method is called – but could perform the computation at the creation of the object (I hope I have got it right). In a way I battle to differentiate this from lazy evaluation but I will show an example to explain the principle. You will notice with the normal compute object that the system would call the Add function every time the method was called. With the Precompute object it only called the compute method when the object was created. Subtle, but something that could lead to major performance benefits. So… this post has gone off in a slight tangent but still related to F# objects.

  • Preprocess outgoing email bodies with a linux smtp server/proxy?

    I have an smtp server running locally on my server, and need to edit the contents of email bodies before they actually get sent out. I have tried using EmailRelay to proxy my smtp server with the --filter option to specify a filter/editing executable, but am getting some odd behavior. Currently, I specify an executable shell script as the filter program and all it is supposed to do is append some text to a log file and return 0 so I know it actually got called. The weird thing is the email gets sent but nothing shows up in my log file like it should (but it does when I run the script manualy). If I remove the 'exit 0' statement, the email does not send like I would expect. Are there any other options/suggestions?

Due to the complex folder hierarchy and delicate nature of the data stored in these files, this task has to be originated from SQL Server.     Our marketing department comes back with "active directory integration" being a key customer request, but our company does not seem to have the attention span to (1) decide on what functional changes we want to make toward this end, (2) interview a broad range of customer to identify the most requested functional changes, and (3) still have this be the "hot potato" issue next week. To help me get beyond the broad topic of "active directory integration," what does it mean in your .NET app, both ASP.NET and WinForms? Here are some sample changes I have to consider: When creating and managing users in your app, are administrators presented with a list of all AD users or just a group of AD users? When creating new security groups within your app (we call them Departments, like "Human Resources"), should this create new AD groups? Do administrators assign users to security groups within your app or outside via AD? Does it matter? Is the user signed on to your app by virtue of being signed on to Windows? If not, do you track users with your own user table and some kind of foreign key into AD? What foreign key do you use to link app users to AD users? Do you have to prove your login process protects user passwords? What foreign key do you use to link app security groups to AD security groups? If you have a WinForms component to your app (we have both ASP.NET and WinForms), do you use the Membership Provider in your WinForms app? Currently, our Membership and Role management predates the framework's version, so we do not use the Membership Provider. Am I missing any other areas of functional changes? Followup question Do apps that support "active directory integration" have the ability to authenticate users against more than one domain? Not that one user would authenticate to more than one domain but that different users of the same system would authenticate against different domains.

  • Email sent by ActionMailer is taking six hours to deliver mail.

    So I have been asked to help maintain a website that uses Ruby on Rails. Now, let me just say I've been programming Ruby for awhile but I am still new to Rails. The first problem brought to my attention is how the activation email takes about six hours to arrive. It would be one thing if the email was not being sent due to errors but it is being send correctly, just slow. Also the server this is running on is also its own SMTP. I checked how the email was being formatted before calling the setup_email method and everything looks okay. I even dug into the ActionMailer lib and read through the files there and didn't see anything out of the ordinary. So what is most likely causing the email to take six hours to deliver?

When I want to create a new user, it requires me to set the (wrong-named, confusing field) login (= username), email address and password. However, I want, like Facebook does, to require the user to enter only an email address and password, not a username. People will also login with this email address. Can anyone help me?

    I want to search for a user's email by using Active Directory. Available is the user's full name (ex. "John Doe" for the email with an email "[email protected]"). From what I've searched, this comes close to what I'm looking to do -- except that the Filter is set to "SAMAccountName", which is not what I have. Unless I'm misunderstanding, I just need to pick the right attribute and toss in the full name name in the same way. Unfortunately, I don't know what this attribute is, apparently no one has had to ask about searching for information in this manner, and that is a pretty big list (msdn * microsoft * com/en-us/library/ms675090(v=VS.85) * aspx, stackoverflow didn't let me link 2 hyperlinks because I don't have 10 rep) of attributes. Does anyone know how to obtain the user's email address through an Active Directory lookup by using the user's full name?

    In the contact us template I want to have a dropdown with the list of offices (All offices articles are places under the same parent node, so getting the list should be fairly easy). I need a way to add the office email address (Template variable from the Office article) to the email generated by Modx's eForm. I don't want the email address to be visible in the contact us form, but a snippet fetching the article Template variable email address. I also want a link from each offices article to the contact us form with the office preselected in the dropdown. How should I implement this?

I am prompted to choose from Send by SMS, Send by Email, Send by Bluetooth, Send by Fring etc. How do I make such a popup, it seamed to be automatically built? Also how do I tell what message to use? And if needed how do I tell who the contact is? Maybe chooses the options based on the contact, (if has email, show email)

    This is not a dupe. Please read and understand the issue before marking this as a duplicate question that has been answered already. Several customers are reporting bounce messages like the one below. At first I thought their computers had a virus but then I received one that was server generated so the problem is with the server. I've inspected the logs and these email addresses do not appear in the logs. Installation instructions were previously in the Programmer’s Guide. As part of this enhancement, content was added to and tested in the RETL Installation Guide to ensure that it contain similar chapters and sections included in other Oracle Retail Installation Guides. Template Creator documentation, under the RIB product umbrellaThe Oracle Retail Functional Artifact Guide and the Oracle Retail Functional ArtifactGenerator Guide contain new information about a new tool called the Template Creator. The Functional Artifacts Generator tool has been enhanced to generate custom and localized payloads business objects on demand, based on Oracle Retail Functional Artifact rules. A new tool called the Template Creator has been provided to create the placeholder XSDs and the import hooks in the base objects on an as-needed basis. In other words, this tool constructs the appropriate placeholders in the packaging structure in the correct locations.   • configure spam assassin to delete all spam above a score domain wide and override individual settin

    Okay, so this is my scenario and what I want to try and do. I maintain a Red Hat email server running qmail and spamassassin. I have a domain that has well over 100 email account each with individual settings for spam scores and, whether or not to delete email incoming mail deemed spam. What I want to accomplish is to change all those email email accounts to say a more stringent spam score value, AND to enable the deletion of email immediately as it flagged as such, for EACH AND EVERY email box. In short, I want to be able to override a user's individual settings spam settings, with my own. Short of tediously going into each and every email box one by one, is there an way to do this all in one fell swoop? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! :-)

    In order to consolidate all my email, I wanted to forward all my Gmail(2 accounts) to a new Live(Hotmail) account. I wanted all email arriving at my Gmail account to be forwarded to my Hotmail(easy enough) BUT I ALSO want all email arriving at Gmail to be replied back to sender with a message like: "Your email has been delivered BUT the user has moved onto [email protected] . Please further all communication to this email". Using Outlook as my email client, how can I work this out?

  • How can I replace email alerts for system events with something more scalable?

    I have a number of systems and services that send email alerts when some sort of event takes place. This works fine for a small number of systems but as the number of alerts grows the important message become less visible among the informational notices. Email filtering can only be effective to a point. What sort of solution can I use in place of emails that will allow me to send arbitrary alerts from various services and that will scale easily as the number of services grows?
