I'm having problems getting Rosegarden to play midi using Timidity on Ubuntu 11.10 amd64.
I've tried mapping the MIDI playback device to one of the Timidity port that was automatically created on start up and that failed.
I've also tried manually starting timidity using the -iA option, and mapping the Rosegarden's MIDI playback device to one of the new ports, and that still failed.
When I close Rosegarden, I can hear one or two notes get played.
Would anyone know how I can get Rosegarden to work again. Thanks.

Assuming no experience with version control systems, just local to live web development. I've been dropped in on a few legacy website projects, and want an easier and more robust way to be able to quickly push and revert changes en masse. I'm currently the only developer on these projects, but more may be added in the future and I think it would be beneficial to set up a system that others can use.
<b>Developer.com: </b>"The open source R language has been in use by statisticians to do data analysis, predictive modeling and visualization for over a decade. This week, R is set to undergo a revolution of sorts with a revamped commercial effort."
<b>Linux User and Developer:</b> "The announcement of the iPad not only sent the internet into some kind of meltdown, it also became a talking point that found its way into the newspapers, everyday conversations and pretty much every media outlet with a spare minute in their schedules"
Earlier this week we asked you to share your favorite tricks for staying on top of your tasks with timely reminders. Now we’re back to highlight some great reader tips (including a bit of software older than some of our readers). Most of us have to-do lists longer than we can do in a given day (or week!) and a constantly changing set of demands and next-actions. Having a timely and effective reminder system is the difference between dropping the ball and getting things done; how exactly that reminder system plays out, however, varied greatly from reader to reader. OJMDC sticks with analog reminders: Sticky notes in the middle of my monitor and in my wallet. I’ve tried my phone apps but I typically disregard them. HTG Explains: Is UPnP a Security Risk? When Apple unveiled its iCloud service at its Worldwide Developer Conference in San Francisco last week some observers called the huge project game-changing. Few noted the challenges inherent in managing an online storage center of this magnitude. Now it looks like Apple has turned to Microsoft and Amazon for help....

I've been bumping around the startup world for a while, and most startups I've seen seem to have (amongst other things) two things in common:
A lack of money
An inability to, reliably, hire good quality developers
This means that, for startups, the ideal hire is someone who is free - where they can wait until they've both raised money and found out that the hire is worth his price tag.
When (if ever) is this a win win situation? For you, as a programmer or software developer, when would this make sense?
When I launch the successful iOS game "Clash of Clans", right in the beginning I get the following message in an iOS info pop-up:
"Clash of Clans is free to play, but you can speed up your progress with in-app purchases. If desired, purchases can be disabled in the general settings of your device."
What's the reason the developer shows this message right in the beginning? Is there any legal obligation to do so?
People that understand client-side prediction and client-side interpolation, I have a question:
When I play the game Team Fortress 2, and type cl_predict 1 into the developer's console, it enables client-side prediction. The also says "6 predictable entities reinitialized". It says this regardless of how many players are on the server, which makes sense, because other players are not predictable entities.
I thought client-side prediction was only for the movement of the player. Are there other entities that the client can provide prediction for?
Just to be straightforward, I am completely new to many aspects of coding and am searching for different specs and guidelines to aid me on my journey to crafting a wonderful game in Epic Games' Unreal Engine 4.
I had some recent thoughts about the possibility of creating an environment in a game that interacts with weather (Rain, Snow, Storms)
Is it possible to make an environment that can simulate weather changes in a game? I wrote notes on this for weeks now. I was thinking that an increase on environments occlusion maps was necessary for creating the effect of rain on windows, as well as making a flowing liquid surface on windows that is only visible in rain. I was also considering the idea of additive bump-maps on meshes for snow, to simulate accumulation. Are these elements dynamic in Unreal 4? Can I implement them?

We most often hear web developers as well as website design development companies asking in forums and developer boards about use of ASP, PHP & other scripting language and its possible negative effects on search engine optimization and effective SEO strategies for the website. There are many server side based scripting languages such as ASP, PHP, Cold Fusion, Python, and Pearl; among which PHP & ASP are more common.
I would like output akin to that of OSX's system_profiler (https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/man8/system_profiler.8.html)
On Ubuntu, I have to string a few utilities togeter: uname -a, lshw, ifconfig, etc... and then extract the list of installed software packages...
Is there a single, simple facade to getting human readable system info from the CLI?
When one considers the amount of time and effort that Unit Testing consumes for the Database Developer, is surprising how few good SQL Server Test frameworks are around. tSQLt , which is open source and free to use, is one of the frameworks that provide a simple way to populate a table with test data as part of the unit test, and check the results with what should be expected. Sebastian and Dennis, who created tSQLt, explain.
