  • javascript error: variable is not defined

    - by Hristo
    to is not defined [Break on this error] setTimeout('updateChat(from, to)', 1); I'm getting this error... I'm using Firebug to test and this comes up in the Console. The error corresponds to line 71 of chat.js and the whole function that wraps this line is: function updateChat(from, to) { $.ajax({ type: "POST", url: "process.php", data: { 'function': 'getFromDB', 'from': from, 'to': to }, dataType: "json", cache: false, success: function(data) { if (data.text != null) { for (var i = 0; i < data.text.length; i++) { $('#chat-box').append($("<p>"+ data.text[i] +"</p>")); } document.getElementById('chat-box').scrollTop = document.getElementById('chat-box').scrollHeight; } instanse = false; state = data.state; setTimeout('updateChat(from, to)', 1); // gives error }, }); } This links to process.php with function call getFromDB and the code for that is: case ('getFromDB'): // get the sender and receiver user IDs from their user names $from = mysql_real_escape_string($_POST['from']); $query = "SELECT `user_id` FROM `Users` WHERE `user_name` = '$from' LIMIT 1"; $result = mysql_query($query) or die(mysql_error()); $row = mysql_fetch_assoc($result); $fromID = $row['user_id']; $to = mysql_real_escape_string($_POST['to']); $query = "SELECT `user_id` FROM `Users` WHERE `user_name` = '$to' LIMIT 1"; $result = mysql_query($query) or die(mysql_error()); $row = mysql_fetch_assoc($result); $toID = $row['user_id']; $query = "SELECT * FROM `Messages` WHERE `from_id` = '$fromID' AND `to_id` = '$toID' LIMIT 1"; $result = mysql_query($query); while($row = mysql_fetch_assoc($result)) { $text[] = $line = $row['message']; $log['text'] = $text; } break; So I'm confused with the line that is giving the error. setTimeout('updateChat(from,to)',1); aren't the parameters to updateChat the same parameters that came into the function? Or are they being pulled in from somewhere else and I have to define to and from else where? Any ideas how to fix this error? Thanks, Hristo

  • Trouble adding event listeners via JavaScript

    - by Jack Roscoe
    Currently I have a function which loops to create multiple HTML objects. Each time an object is created, I want to add an onClick function listener to that object so that I can trigger a function when each one is clicked. What's the best way to do this? Here's the code which creates my objects: RenderMultipleChoice:function() { this.c = paper.rect(this.x, this.y, this.shapeWidth, this.shapeHeight); }

  • Division of text follow the cursor via Javascript/Jquery

    - by webzide
    Dear experts, I wanted have a dynamic division of content follow you with the cursor in the web browser space. I am not a pro at JS so I spent 2 hours to finally debugged a very stupid way to accomplish this. $(document).ready(function () { function func(evt) { var evt = (evt) ? evt : event; var div = document.createElement('div'); div.style.position = "absolute"; div.style.left = evt.clientX + "px"; div.style.top = evt.clientY + "px"; $(div).attr("id", "current") div.innerHTML = "CURSOR FOLLOW TEXT"; $(this).append($(div)); $(this).unbind() $(this).bind('mousemove', function () { $('div').remove("#current"); }); $(this).bind('mousemove', func); } $("body").bind('mousemove', func) }); As you can see this is pretty much Brute force and it slows down the browser quite a bit. I often experience a lag on the browser as a drag my mouse from one place to another. Is there a way to accomplish this easier and faster and more intuitive. I know you can use the cursor image technique but thats something I'm looking to avoid. Thanks in advance.

  • mint.com javascript dropdown effect

    - by Adam McMahon
    I need to recreate an effect that mint.com has on another website. When you go to the transactions page and click on one of your transactions a tab pops up underneath that says edit details. When you click on that tab a div will drop down exposing more details about the transaction. I don't even know what this kind of effect this is called but I need to know to recreate something like this preferably with jquery. There are some screenshots of what I'm talking about below.

  • Detect the file size of a link's href using JavaScript

    - by noblethrasher
    Hi, Would like to write a script to detect the file size of the target of a link on a web page. Right now I have a function that finds all links to PDF files (i.e. the href ends with '.pdf') and appends the string '[pdf]' to the innerText. I would like to extend it so that I can also append some text advising the user that the target is a large file (e.g. greater than 1MB). Thanks

  • [Javascript] Prevent an element from being the target in a document mouseover

    - by Sander
    I'm building an firebug-like inspection tool for my page. When the mouse enters an element, the element should be highlighted. Now I'm creating an element which I position absolute on top of the target element, this however means the next mousemove event (which is bound to the document) will fire with the actual "highlight element" as the target. Is there a way to prevent the "highlight element" from being the target element in the mousemove event? The element already has a transparant background.

  • Trying to simplify some Javascript with closures

    - by mvalente
    Hi, I'm trying to simplify some JS code that uses closures but I am getting nowhere (probably because I'm not grokking closures) I have some code that looks like this: var server = http.createServer(function (request, response) { var httpmethods = { "GET": function() { alert('GET') }, "PUT": function() { alert('PUT') } }; }); And I'm trying to simplify it in this way: var server = http.createServer(function (request, response) { var httpmethods = { "GET": function() { alertGET() }, "PUT": function() { alertPUT() } }; }); function alertGET() { alert('GET'); } function alertPUT() { alert('PUT'); } Unfortunately that doesnt seem to work... Thus: - what am I doing wrong? - is it possible to do this? - how? TIA -- MV

  • Variable function name Javascript.

    - by Vladimir
    I'm sorting array: myArray.sort(comparators.some_comparator); and I have several comparator to choose from: comparators = { asc_firstname_comparator : function(o1, o2){ ... } desc_firstname_comparator : function(o1, o2){ ... } etc... } I want to write function which returns certain comparator depending on input data. It should figure out comparator from string inputs, something like this: function chooseComparator(field, order){ return "comparators."+order+"_"+field+"_comparator"; } So is it possible to pass only function name string to sort() method or I'll need to pass reference to correct comparator somehow?

  • How to initiate JavaScript Callback with MVC2 using RenderAction

    - by Zacho
    I am building a dashboard where I am iterating through a list of controls to render, and I need to initiate a general callback both after each control and after they are all completed. I was curious what the best way to handle this is. I can get the control specific callback fired off by placing myUserControlCallback(); in the user control itself. I'm just not sure how to run something like allControlsRendered();. Any ideas?

  • Using JQuery replaceWith with a JavaScript Variable

  • Javascript, IE, Strings, and Performance problems

    - by Infinity
    Hey guys, So we have this product, and it's really slow in IE. We've already applied a lot of the practices advised by the IE guys themselves (like this, and this), and try to sacrifice clean code for performance in the critical parts like DOM manipulation. However, as you can see in this IE profiler screenshot.. Just "String" is the biggest offender. Almost 750ms of exclusive time. Does this mean IE is spending 750ms just instantiating Strings? I also read this stuff on the Opera dev blog: A build script can remove whitespace, comments, replace strings with Array lookups (to avoid MSIE creating a string object for every single instance of a string — even in conditions) But no more info regarding this. Anyone can clarify? It seems like IE has to create a full String instance every time you have " " in your code, which could explain this, but I don't know what the array lookup optimization would look like. BTW- we don't really do much of string concatenation anywhere in the code. The library we use is MooTools 1.2.4 Any suggestions will be appreciated! Thx

  • If Else Conditionals within Function in JavaScript

    - by Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier
    I'm having issues with conditionals. I want to return the index where pattern starts in string (or -1 if not found). The search is to be case sensitive if the 3rd parameter is true otherwise it is case insensitive. Examples index("abAB12","AB",true) returns 2 but index("abAB12","AB",false) returns 0 index("abAB12","BA",true) returns -1 and index("abAB12","BA",false) returns 1 Any idea how I can accomplish this? This is my code so far var s = "abAB12" var p = "AB" var cs = true function index(string, pattern, caseSensitive) { if (pattern) { var found = false; if (caseSensitive = false) { if (string.indexOf(pattern.) >= 0) { found = true; } return (found); else { return (""); } } else if (caseSensitive = true) { if (string.toLowerCase().indexOf(pattern.toLowerCase()) >= 0) { found = true; } return (found); } else { return (""); } } } alert(index(s, p, cs)); Fiddle at http://jsfiddle.net/AfDFb/1/

  • Javascript Anonymous Functions and Global Variables

    - by Jonathan Swift
    I thought I would try and be clever and create a Wait function of my own (I realise there are other ways to do this). So I wrote: var interval_id; var countdowntimer = 0; function Wait(wait_interval) { countdowntimer = wait_interval; interval_id = setInterval(function() { --countdowntimer <=0 ? clearInterval(interval_id) : null; }, 1000); do {} while (countdowntimer >= 0); } // Wait a bit: 5 secs Wait(5); This all works, except for the infinite looping. Upon inspection, if I take the While loop out, the anonymous function is entered 5 times, as expected. So clearly the global variable countdowntimer is decremented. However, if I check the value of countdowntimer, in the While loop, it never goes down. This is despite the fact that the anonymous function is being called whilst in the While loop! Clearly, somehow, there are two values of countdowntimer floating around, but why?

  • Javascript & jquery : Unable to increment within a form

    - by Daniyal
    I got a simple increment function like this: $(function(){ $("#inc").click(function(){ var value = parseInt($(":text[name='ice_id']").val()) + 1; $(":text[name='ice_id']").val(value); }); $("#dec").click(function(){ var value = parseInt($(":text[name='ice_id']").val()) - 1; $(":text[name='ice_id']").val(value); }); }); the ice_id text field is embedded within a form <form id="masterSubmit" name="masterSubmit" action="" method="post"> <td><input id="ice_id" type="text" name="ice_id" size="16" maxlength="15"></td> </form> When I try now to increment , it successfully increments a number, but shows the following weird behavior: It 'refreshes' the site, so that the content of the text field is gone. This behavior disappears, if I comment out the form tags ...unfortunately the form tags are required for an AJAX-submit. Are there any ways to avoid this problem? Thanks in advance for any hints and best regards Daniyal

  • javascript array/object issue

    - by FlyingCat
    I am trying to push elements to an array. for (a=0; a < test.length; a++){ if(this.testnumber != test[a].number){ //it will only loop 8 times under conditional statement group = { title: test.Title , ID: test.ID, contents: [] }; this.company.push(group); this.testnumber = test.number[a]; } //outside of if conditional statement.. it will loop 15 times //i want every test[a].conetents get pushed to group.contents array. //this.company is the final variable I need for this function... group.contents.push(test[a].contents); } However, when I do console.log(this.company); I see 8 elmements with only 1 element in each group.contents array The ideal situation is to have 8 elements with 2 to 3 elements in the group.contents array I hope I explain my situation well. Any idea how to solve my issue? Thanks a lot!

  • Getting the value from asp:LinkButton's CommandArgument attribute using jquery/javascript

    - by LobalOrning
    I need to get the value of the CommandArgument attribute of a LinkButton, in an asp:Repeater. I have an asp:Repeater with 2 LinkButtons whose CommandArgument I set to a value: <ItemTemplate> <tr class="odd"> <td><%#DataBinder.Eval(Container.DataItem, "batch_id")%></td> <td><%#DataBinder.Eval(Container.DataItem, "productId")%></td> <td><%#DataBinder.Eval(Container.DataItem, "serial_number")%></td> <td><%#DataBinder.Eval(Container.DataItem, "activation_card_number")%></td> <td><%#DataBinder.Eval(Container.DataItem, "transaction_amount","{0:C}")%></td> <td><%#DataBinder.Eval(Container.DataItem, "response_dt", "{0:M/d/yyyy HH:mm:ss}")%></td> <td style="text-align:center;"><%#DataBinder.Eval(Container.DataItem, "resp_process_msg")%></td> <td style="text-align:center;"><%#DataBinder.Eval(Container.DataItem, "resp_response_code")%></td> <td style="text-align:center;"><asp:LinkButton ID="lnkBtnRestageAdd" CommandName="Add" CommandArgument='<%#Eval("activation_card_number")%>' runat="server" Text="stage" class="add" OnClientClick="return false;" /></td> <td style="text-align:center;"><asp:LinkButton ID="lnkBtnRestageMinus" CommandName="Subtract" CommandArgument='<%#Eval("activation_card_number")%>' runat="server" Text="stage" class="minus" OnClientClick="return false;" /></td> </tr> </ItemTemplate> I have suppressed the PostBack with OnClientClick="return false;" so that I can pop a jQuery dialog modal when the link buttons get clicked: if (btnAdd != null) { $(".add").click(function() { $("#<%=divDialogAdd.ClientID %>").removeAttr("style"); $("#<%=divDialogAdd.ClientID %>").dialog("open"); }); } In the modal I have 2 other asp:LinkButtons, and when the 'Yes' button is clicked I do the postback like so: yesBtn.click(function() { setTimeout('__doPostBack(\'btnAdd\',\'\')', 0); //need to add a param }); What I need to do, is somehow grab the CommandArgument value from the LinkButton in the Repeater, so that I can pass that as a parametere or assign it to a hidden field. I have tried jQuery's attr(), but that only works when the attribute was set using that function as well. How can I get this value, or what other way can I go about this?

  • Javascript: Static member variable containing object instances

    - by tom
    I have the following: function Preferences() { } Preferences.players = { 'player1': new Player() } players is a static member variable of Preferences and I'm trying to make it an object containing an instance of a Player. However, it doesn't appear to let me do this. It seems like it will allow me to define players if I make it a non-static member variable however. Like so: function Preferences() { var players = { 'player1' : new Player() } } Is it possible to create a static member variable containing instances of an object in JS?
