• Atheros AR2413 wireless not working after shutdown

  I am using a Ubuntu 11.04 on an Acer aspire 3680 laptop and my wifi is not working. I followed the below commands to install the madwifi driver: sudo su apt-get install subversion cd /usr/src svn checkout http://madwifi-project.org/svn/madwifi/trunk madwifi tar cfvz madwifi.tgz cd madwifi make && make install echo "blacklist ath5k" /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf echo "ath_pci" /etc/modules modprobe ath_pci sudo reboot After installation I am facing the same problem. My wifi wont work after I shutdown. Infact it didn't work after suspend but I rectified that problem by the following commands: Command 1: sudo rmmod -f ath_pci sudo rfkill unblock all sudo modprobe ath_pci along with the command SUSPEND_MODULES=ath_pci added to the /etc/pm/config.d/madwifi directory. So if I suspend and then on my laptop the wifi loads well and doesn't create a problem. But if I shutdown my laptop the wifi never loads again and eachtime I have to run a Ubuntu 9.04 live CD to load it. I did try adding the Command 1 to the /etc/rc.local directory but still it doesn't work. So my question is: What should I do in order to make my wireless work without having to run a live CD of ubuntu 9.04 everytime after shutdown? Thanks. • Boot-Repair after messing up NTFS partition

  I posted this question explaining what happened after I tried to create a new swap partition on a Win/Ubuntu dual-boot machine. I have since created a live-boot USB and installed Boot-Repair. I had it "recommend repairs", after which it tried repairing the wubi filesystems, which as far as I'm aware was not necessary. I'm not sure where to go from here; I don't care very much about backing up my files, I just want to be able to boot the machine. In the Advanced Options the "Repair Windows boot files" box is uncheckable both GRUB tabs are unclickable (I do have GRUB installed) Here is my Pastebinit with the details from the Boot-Repair.   What do you need to know to at the very least get your foot in the door? We're assuming for someone who doesn't have a college degree (yet) but will eventually get one. My guess is html, css, javascript, and php, and photoshop and dreamweaver, and sql. And being familiar with using a web host to have sites live, like knowing how to use cpanel. • What kind of installer should I use?

  I need a program installer for window's that is free or open source, that is somewhat customizable, but creates very small installer files. I would be using this to create a mmorpg game client installer, for my private server. And I'll need to this repeatedly once my server goes live to help keep my player's up to date with server changes. Any suggestions? I have tried NSIS, but i really didn't like it, too hard to do. I am also concerned about file sizes... Any thoughts?

• Why is multithreading often preferred for improving performance?

  I have a question, it's about why programmers seems to love concurrency and multi-threaded programs in general. I'm considering 2 main approaches here: an async approach basically based on signals, or just an async approach as called by many papers and languages like the new C# 5.0 for example, and a "companion thread" that manages the policy of your pipeline a concurrent approach or multi-threading approach I will just say that I'm thinking about the hardware here and the worst case scenario, and I have tested this 2 paradigms myself, the async paradigm is a winner at the point that I don't get why people 90% of the time talk about multi-threading when they want to speed up things or make a good use of their resources. I have tested multi-threaded programs and async program on an old machine with an Intel quad-core that doesn't offer a memory controller inside the CPU, the memory is managed entirely by the motherboard, well in this case performances are horrible with a multi-threaded application, even a relatively low number of threads like 3-4-5 can be a problem, the application is unresponsive and is just slow and unpleasant. A good async approach is, on the other hand, probably not faster but it's not worst either, my application just waits for the result and doesn't hangs, it's responsive and there is a much better scaling going on. I have also discovered that a context change in the threading world it's not that cheap in real world scenario, it's in fact quite expensive especially when you have more than 2 threads that need to cycle and swap among each other to be computed. On modern CPUs the situation it's not really that different, the memory controller it's integrated but my point is that an x86 CPUs is basically a serial machine and the memory controller works the same way as with the old machine with an external memory controller on the motherboard. The context switch is still a relevant cost in my application and the fact that the memory controller it's integrated or that the newer CPU have more than 2 core it's not bargain for me. For what i have experienced the concurrent approach is good in theory but not that good in practice, with the memory model imposed by the hardware, it's hard to make a good use of this paradigm, also it introduces a lot of issues ranging from the use of my data structures to the join of multiple threads. Also both paradigms do not offer any security abut when the task or the job will be done in a certain point in time, making them really similar from a functional point of view. According to the X86 memory model, why the majority of people suggest to use concurrency with C++ and not just an async approach ? Also why not considering the worst case scenario of a computer where the context switch is probably more expensive than the computation itself ?

• Changing Filename Case with TortoiseSVN on Windows [migrated]

  I've been working on a development project using a Windows machine as a test server. Eventually, I'd like the "live" version to end up on a Linux machine. While trying to test on the Linux machine, it became apparent that I needed to change the case of several file names as Windows was case insensitive but Linux wasn't. When I changed the file name case in Windows, TortoiseSVN recognized that the file hand changed and marked my folders appropriately. However, when I tried to commit my changes, not only did TortoiseSVN tell me that no changes had been made, but it had actually reverted all of the file name changes I had made back to their original case. My question is, is there a simple way to alter the file name case from a Windows PC and have the changes appear in my repository? I'd like to avoid any kind of delete, commit, replace, commit scenario to keep my commits tidy if possible. Thanks!

• No boot loader found - dual booting Windows 8 with Ubuntu 14.04

  I have been trying in vain to dual boot my computer with Windows 8 Pro (pre-installed) and Ubuntu 14.04 64-bit. I have been able to successfully install Ubuntu 14.04, but the option to start Ubuntu does not appear on startup. This is after having taken all steps as mentioned in Installing Ubuntu on a Pre-Installed Windows 8 (64-bit) System (UEFI Supported). I even tried the boot repair option and ended up with this error log. My questions are: How do I solve for No boot loaders found in /dev/...? Are there any other recommendations that will help me solve this? Other points that may be important: Booting into Ubuntu from a live USB shows all Ubuntu partitions on the hard drive.

• Looking for a very subtle unit testing example

  In the context of Continuous Integration, I need to teach unit testing to a 20-people audience of programmers. Everything will be all right, but I am still trying to find the perfect unit testing example. More than writing tests like a robot, I want to show that unit testing can help prevent very subtle errors. I am thinking of the following scenario to happen when doing a live TDD demo: the test cases would already be written, we would have to write methods together, most of us would naturally have forgotten to handle a specific case for a method, everyone would then be surprised, when seeing that all tests don't pass, the failing test would make us think more and realize that we forgot an important case. My question will probably finish as "too broad" or "not clear what you are asking", but we never know, one of you might have a great idea. Your answer can use Java and JUnit, though any other language will be fine since only the idea will matter.

We chatted about learning Xcode and Objective-C, provisioning devices and the app publishing process. We all have a .NET background and made lots of comparisons between the two platforms/ecosystems/fanbois. They even let me throw in a plug for Christian Radio Locator. Jeff was my first contact with the Kansas City .NET community. It was probably about 10 years ago. He pushed me to talk more (and rescued me from my first talk that bombed) and blog more. • Dual Boot Ubuntu and Windows 7: BOOTMGR is missing when I tried to boot in Windows

  So, I don't know what exactly how I managed to delete the MBR record on windows partition. But let me explain what I did next, I ran the ubuntu boot repair tool and now Windows is not even listed in my grub loader. So I went and booted with windows cd and choose repair. Then I ran ubuntu boot repair again via live cd. Here is the log http://paste.ubuntu.com/1426181/. Still no luck. Looks like osprobe can't detect windows on my /dev/sda2 partition. Any clues ? • Is there a way to disable a particular pci port

  I have a MB with 2 nics on it. a switch burned up and took out one of them. there is no way to turn them off individually in the bios. is there a way to turn off one of the ports. unmap it,unbind it, power it down so the system doesnt see it at after boot. they are mapped as 0000:02.08.0 and 0000:02.08.1 I want to turn the second one off somehow. Since they both use the same driver, blacklisting the module will take out both of them. Normally I would just live with it but it seems there should be a way to do that like in windows (gasp)--just disable it. I Actually have the exact same problem on another comp running XCP so this will be a 2fer if it gets figured out. the OS is 12.4 lts server with xen on it. THX
