• Dedicated server: managed hosting or manage it myself?

  We're currently hosting a number of sites on a self-managed dedicated server. Some companies, however, offer a managed dedicated server hosting service. They offer: Roughly the same server spec Ticketing system support Managed daily backups Virtual firewall (but with a limit of 10 IP addresses allowed through at any one time) Now, this managed hosting is at extra expense - somewhere in the region of $500 per month, and the limit on the number of IP addresses they'll manage on the firewall is also a real pain. My thinking is it would be better and cheaper to Stay with the same host since the dedicated box is fine Get an Amazon AWS account and use their server to manage backups; there are a number of good tools that can be used to automate the process Configure iptables so that I have complete control of the firewall I want to know Is a managed virtual firewall likely to be more secure than me configuring iptables? Whether, in your opinion, it's best to let someone else take care of backups? If, from your experience, there's anything else i'm missing that warrants using managed hosting over a DIY service? I think there is some reluctance to not having managed hosting since a managed host in effect takes responsibility for your server, whereas any hardware or security issues with a server that we manage would mean we are forced to hold our hands up when a client site goes down. That said, I personally don't think a managed host does that much in the day to day running of your server (backups are automatic, OS updates are carried out with ease, etc.).

• How do I bridge my wireless to my wired connection?

  I want to bridge the wireless connection with the wired connection. The wireless is the host and the wired is the client, so to speak. Internet sharing (inet <--> wifi <--> ethernet) I tried to bridge my ethernet connection by going to network manager edit connections wired edit IPv4 settings shared to other computers Screenshots However, it seems to automatically disconnect half a second after it says "connection established"! edit 2 got the network manager logs, it seems the address is in use. I don't have time to bother with a dozen command line tricks, unless is copy & pasting a shell script... so please suggest ways that use GUIs and/or won't leave my computer in a confused state (e.g. disabling network manager, manually connecting to a WPA network, installing brutils, etc.). edit: one idea that would work, if it's possible -- is there a way to share connections via SSH and SOCKS5? I'd need to do this at a system-wide level though; I only know how to do it through the browser now. Then, I could run ifconfig eth0 192.168.4.1 on the computer sharing the inet, and ifconfig eth0 192.168.4.2 on the computer I'm trying to share with; I know this does work for host-to-host transfers. edit 3 If I run sudo killall dnsmasq, then nothing is using the 10.42.43.1 address the network manager sharing wants to use. But now it just takes longer to die, with error "NetworkManager[5935]: dnsmasq died with signal 9" [ http://pastebin.com/4FNtpugi ]. Looking at just the commands [ http://pastebin.com/1vrtQeWk ], maybe it's trying to route eth0 to itself? I'm not that familiar with networking things though.

• Setting up a LAMP VM server for Development and Testing?

  Info: I would like to set up a VM server on my local computer which will serve pages in the exact same way as my current hosting (but only to me on my local computer). I currently pay a big web hosting company to host my website & web store and they are doing a great job, but I would like to be able to work on my Web site and its corresponding MySQL DB, HTML, and PHP code without being at risk of messing something completely up on the live servers. My current plan of action: Set up a VM webserver with Debian, MySQL, PHP, Apache. Copy web store (PHP/HTML) code to VM server. Copy my current MySQL databases from my hosting provider and install on VM server. Modify and test new features on VM server. Upload MySQL DB and HTML/PHP code back to web host's server where it should work as before but with new modifications. Questions: Now I'm pretty sure I have steps one and two down correctly but I can't for the life of me figure out how to proceed next, so here are my questions. I have my /etc/host file set up so www.MySite.test redirects to the IP address of the local VM webserver. Once I import my PHP/HTML files and MySQL file whats the best way to navigate around the fact that all of my files and DBs will reference www.MySite.com. I can export my MySQL dbs but do I also have to export my MySQL users and passwords to access those db or are those coded into my html/php code?

  Can anyone shed some light on what's causing this timeout error on Heroku (at 2012-07-08T08:58:33+00:00)? The docs say that it's because of some long running process. I've set config.assets.initialize_on_precompile = false in config/application.rb. Any thoughts? I have re installed glassfish and NetBeans but it all seems the same. I think this started happening after I had to force-restart my computer with NetBeans stil open and the app deployed, but it's hard to know for sure if this was the real catalyst. Any thoughts or help is appreciated thanks. Is it an app error? if so why no errors in the log are shown?

In my main program I am doing the foloowing : HMODULE mod=::GetModuleHandle(L"HookProcDll"); HHOOK rslt=(WH_CALLWNDPROCRET,MyCallWndRetProc,mod,0); The hook procedure which is called MyCallWndRetProc exists in separate dll called HookProcDll.dll. The hook procedure is watching for WM_ACTIVATE message. The thing is that the code stucks in the line where I am setting the hook, i.e in the line where I am calling ::SetWindowsHookEx. And then Windows gets unresponsive, my task bar disappears and I am left with empty desktop. Then I must reset the computer. What am doing wrong, why Windows get unresponsive ? and Do I need to inject HookProcDll.dll in every process in order to set the global hook, and how can I do that ?

• ASP.NET: Large number of Session_Start with same session id

  I'm running a ASP.NET website on my development box (.NET 2.0 on Vista/IIS7). The Session_Start method in global.asax.cs logs every call to a file (log4net). The Session_End method also logs every call. I'm using InProc session state, and set the session timeout to 5 mins (to avoid waiting for 20 mins). I hit the website, wait for 5 minutes unit I see the Session_End logging. Then I F5 the website. The browsers still has the session cookie and sends it to the server. Session_Start is called and a new session is created using the same session id (btw: I need this to be the same session id, because it is used to store data in database). Result: Every time I hit F5 on a previously ended session, the Session_Start method is called. When I open a different browser, the Session_Start method is called just once. Then after 5 minutes the Session_End each F5 causes the Session_Start method to execute. Can anyone explain why this is happening? Update: After the Session timeout, all subsequent requests have a session start & session end. • Tomcat gzip while chunked issue

  I'm expiriencing some problem with one of my data source services. As it says in HTTP response headers it's running on Apache-Coyote/1.1. Server gives responses with Transfer-Encoding: chunked, here sample response: HTTP/1.1 200 OK Server: Apache-Coyote/1.1 Content-Type: text/xml;charset=utf-8 Transfer-Encoding: chunked Content-Encoding: gzip Date: Tue, 30 Mar 2010 06:13:52 GMT And problem is when I'm requesting server to send gzipped request it often sends not full response. I recieve response, see that last chunk recieved, but then after ungzipping I see that response is partial. I never seen such behavior with gzip turned off in request headers. So my question is: is it common tomcat issue? maybe one of it's mod which is doing compression? Or maybe it maybe some kind of proxy issue? I can't tell about versions of tomcat or what gzip mod they use, but feel free to ask, i'll try ask my service provider. Thanks.

  Trying to figure out this pseudo code. The following is assumed.... I can only use unsigned and signed integers (or long). Division returns a real number with no remainder. MOD returns a real number. Fractions and decimals are not handled. INT I = 41828; INT C = 15; INT D = 0; D = (I / 65535) * C; How would you handle a fraction (or decimal value) in this situation? Is there a way to use negative value to represent the remainder? In this example I/65535 should be 0.638, however, with the limitations, I get 0 with a MOD of 638. How can I then multiply by C to get the correct answer? Hope that makes sense.

I'm trying to add support for specifying build arguments to psake, but I've run into some strange PowerShell variable scoping behavior dealing specifically with calling functions that have been exported using Export-ModuleMember (which is how psake exposes it's main method). • C socket programming: connect() hangs

I have this client that tries to connect to a server, everything seems to be fine, using gethostbyname(), socket(), bind(), but when trying toconnect()` it just hangs there and the server doesn't see anything from the client. I know that the server works because another client (also in C) can connect just fine. What causes the server to not see this incoming connection? I'm at the end of my wits here.
