• When to use () with classes?

  This is really starting to confuse the hell out of me. When do I use them, when don't I? For example I was reading a .cpp on linked lists whose class declaration was: struct CarPart { long PartNumber; char Partname[40]; double UnitPrice; CarPart *next; }; class ListOfParts { int size; public: CarPart *head; ListOfParts(); ~ListOfParts(); const int count() const; void insert( CarPart *item ); CarPart *retrieve( int pos ); }; With this code, why am I allowed to write ListOfParts *pPart = new ListOfParts(); CarPart *pCarPart = new CarPart; Declaring an instance of ListOfParts requires (), but not my CarPart? That's confusing me. When I asked a question before and people told me that such a declaration is a function that returns a ListOfParts object, but not the actual constructor. So I'm guessing this is still something different. What's happening here? PS: Am I correct to assume that the const to the right of count() means I cannot modify any values in count?

  I am beginner for CI so don’t have good knowledge. My problem is: I am not using any database. All the records are fetched from JSON. Therefore I don’t think I need to configure database… As said by CI, it doesn’t necessarily ask for database. • Abstract Design Pattern implementation

  I started learning design patterns a while ago (only covered facade and abstract so far, but am enjoying it). I'm looking to apply the Abstract pattern to a problem I have. The problem is: Supporting various Database systems using one abstract class and a set of methods and properties, which then the underlying concrete classes (inheriting from abstract class) would be implementing. I have created a DatabaseWrapper abstract class and have create SqlClientData and MSAccessData concrete class that inherit from the DatabaseWrapper. However, I'm still a bit confused about how the pattern goes as far as implementing these classes on the Client. Would I do the following?: DatabaseWrapper sqlClient = new SqlClientData(connectionString); This is what I saw in an example, but that is not what I'm looking for because I want to encapsulate the concrete classes; I only want the Client to use the abstract class. This is so I can support for more database systems in the future with minimal changes to the Client, and creating a new concrete class for the implementations. I'm still learning, so there might be a lot of things wrong here. Please tell me how I can encapsulate all the concrete classes, and if there is anything wrong with my approach. Many Thanks! PS: I'm very excited to get into software architecture, but still am a beginner, so take it easy on me. :)

• This program isn't asking for the predetermined 5 numbers from the array?

  Okay, so this question is difficult to state. I'm a beginner at C++, and I rarely run into problems with these simple assignments, but something is majorly wrong here and I cannot identify it. I've been trying for hours. This program is supposed to read 5 numbers from an array that the user enters, and then print the largest one. (I know it's easier to just write a for-loop, but our professor wanted us to call a function). The only problem is that instead of asking for 5 numbers, it asks for 2. It works other than that, I JUST NEED IT TO ASK FOR 5 NUMBERS. haha. Your input would be greatly appreciated. • C# WPF Unable to control Textboxes

  I'm a beginner in coding into C#. While I'm launching a process I can't controls my textboxes. I found some answers on this forum but the explaination is a bit to difficult for me to implement it for my problem. I created a small program that will run a batch file to make a backup. While the backup is running I can't modify my textboxes, disabling buttons etc... I already saw that this is normal but I don't know how to implement the solutions.   I don't understand templates really and was trying to run a simple find the minimum for ints, doubles, chars. First question, why is template<typename T> sometimes used, and other times template<>?   Hi! I'm using multiple threads in my application. Basically I have a combo box and upon selecting Inbox, p1 resumes and p2 is suspended and upon selecting Send, p2 starts and p1 stops.   I have couple of input fields with the class "link". All of them should start the jqueryUI dialog so this is why I bind the method to a class and not an single id. The difficulty is now that i can't use the (this) in line 12, because that gives me the identity of the dialog and not the input element. As I am an beginner I don't know how to pass a variable to this event with the element of the input field. If I know have an instance of myClass and set some random garbage to a, b and c. What is the best way to reset them all to the state after the class constructor was called, so: 0, 0 and 0? I came up with this way: myClass emptyInstance; myUsedInstance = emptyInstance; // Ewww.. code smell? Or.. myUsedInstance.a = 0; myUsedInstance.c = 0; myUsedInstance.c = 0; I think you know what I want, is there any better way to achieve this?

• Clonezilla restore from Samba - no 'restoredisk' option

  I used a CloneZilla LiveCD to back up a couple of Windows machines to a Samba share. Now I'm trying to restore those images, and CloneZilla won't even give me the 'restoredisk' or 'restorepart' options on the menu. I'm guessing that this is because CZ isn't recognizing a valid image... but why? • Windows 7 laptop constantly dropping internet connection

  I have scoured the web for an answer and failed to find one. I am using a Toshiba Satellite laptop running Windows 7 64-Bit. I have the computer connected via Wifi. Now, I am no beginner with the Internet, or anything related to computers, as I have grown up teaching everyone around me how to use computers, and went to college for IT. Everything on my network works flawlessly at all times, except for this evil laptop. The worst part is that I fixed this once before a few years back and recently had to replace the hard drive and re-install the OS, but cannot for the life of me remember what I did to make this problem go away. I am in my browser, connected to the Internet. I click a link. Suddenly no internet access. All I do is click down on the WiFi connection in the task bar, disconnect and reconnect immediately. Internet is back the moment I hit "connect." I have read many people had the same issues as I am having, but they all had triggers or other network issues. I have no trigger (this happens literally five to six times per minute no matter what I am doing) and I have no problems with my router, modem, or any other devices or computers on said network. As I am a web designer, and like to test my work live at every turn- this is going to result in this laptop being in pieces if I can't get it fixed soon. If more info is needed, let me know and I will provide. Thanks for any help offered! EDIT: Network Card: Realtek RTL8188CE Wireless LAN 802.11n PCI-E NIC Network state reads as "No Internet Access" when the problem first occurs, then magically I have Internet access for about ten seconds once I disconnect and reconnect. I have turned off IPV6, I have turned off power saving options for the network adapter, no viruses. Any new ideas? Also, I had to disconnect and reconnect four times just to get to this edit screen- and will likely have to do the same just to post it- it's that bad.

• Installing Cygwin C and C++ compilers for NetBeans IDE 7.2

  I am very new to Cygwin, C, C++ and NetBeans IDE 7.2. My PC is running MICROSOFT WINDOWS 7 OS. I have read the documentation on how to install the Cygwin C C++ compilers. http://netbeans.org/community/releases/72/cpp-setup-instructions.html#compilers I have tried to run Cygwin setup.exe that has the most recent version of the Cygwin DLL is 1.7.16-1. I am not very sure which exact package to install when the Cygwin setup.exe installer prompted for the selection of packages to download and install. I want to install the Cygwin C and C++ compilers so that i can create C and C++ projects using NetBeans 7.2 I selected those packages that has contains the following names gcc, g++, gdb and make. Then i proceed on to install the selected packages The installation took up a long time so i stopped after about 45 minutes or so. I browsed the installation folder and i saw some packages i selected were installed. I noticed that some packages came in some sort of "zip" file with tar.gz extension. i added the folder path into the PATH variable in the windows 7 environment variables window. I think this command works C: cygcheck -c cygwin but the rest doesn't work i think. C: gcc --version C: g++ --version C: make --version C: gdb --version I tried to create the C C++ project using the Netbeans IDE 7.2 and the IDE pops out a dialog message saying that there was no c c++ compilers found. Have i made some mistake here? like installing the wrong packages or something else??? Are there packages shown in the Cygwin setup.exe installer that contains exact names and exact version that is compatible with NetBeans IDE 7.2?? This i am not too sure. Because i i think i didn't really see some required packages with exact names and versions. My question is : Which exact packages do i install using the Cygwin setup.exe installer so that i can create C & C++ projects using Netbeans IDE 7.2? and what other steps do i have to take note to ensure complete successful installation? do i have to wait all the selected required packages to be installed? I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW THE EXACT NAMES AND THE VERSIONS FOR THE REQUIRED PACKAGES (NAMES AND VERSIONS DISPLAYED IN THE CYGWIN SETUP.EXE INSTALLER WHEN PROMPTED) NEEEDED FOR C & C++ PROGRAMMING USING NETBEANS IDE 7.2??

• Vim configuration slow in Terminal & iTerm2 but not in MacVim

  Ideally, I want to use Vim from Terminal or iTerm2. However, it becomes unbearably slow so I had to resort to using MacVim. There is nothing wrong with MacVim, however my workflow would be much smoother if I used only Terminal/iTerm2. When its slow Loading files, in particular Rails files takes about 1 - 1.5s. Removing rails.vim decreases this time to 0.5 - 1s. In MacVim this is instantaneous. Scrolling through the rows and columns via h, j, k, l. It progressively gets slower the longer I hold down the keys. Eventually, it starts jumping rows. I have my Key Repeat set to Fast and Delay Until Repeat set to Short. After 10 - 15 minutes of usage, using plugins such as ctrlp or Command-T gets very laggy. I'd type a letter, wait 2 - 3s, then type the next. My Setup 11" MacBook Air running Mac OS X Version 10.7.3 (1.6 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB DDR3) My dotfiles. > vim --version VIM - Vi IMproved 7.3 (2010 Aug 15, compiled Nov 16 2011 16:44:23) MacOS X (unix) version Included patches: 1-333 Huge version without GUI. • Can't validate mine, sudo nor root in Debian "Jessie" Gnome anymore?

  I'm Debian beginner & GUI guy in a bit of trouble? Can't login as sudo/gksu/root/su nor as (main/super)user after removed user password via Gnome-user-settings. History of actions (Probably irrelevant though) Installed Debian "Jessie" GNU/Linux with xFce GUI (en-US) as only OS. HardWare is ThinkPad w510. Skipped root user password in setup, to get sudo for superuser easily. Logged in (as always had) with Gnome (3.4.x), not once with xFCE. (installed Xfce. Installed xFce only to achieve more control (easier management) over packages this way, to set-up gnome much more by mine likes. Added more jessie repros (same ones as in Wheesy stable by default but for Jessie as, Jessie only had repros for security updates by default). Installed lots of gtk(3) & gnome(3) based soft; (- restarted again after this) Installed propietary graphics card driver for mine nvidia quadro. (- restarted once again after that one) Installed more stuff related to mine work/school/devel. The actual problem Had a plan to restart again, but wanted to set up auto-login first, instead set user password to none (don't ask why / perhaps caused by being awake for a looooong time), noticed it, and set also to auto-login, but couldn't undo mine previous mistake to create new password for me. As mine password is set to none I would have expected that simply return in pass prompt for emty password field would do, but it won't authenticate. I tried Alt+F2 "gksu gedit" as well as: sudo wget "https://www.some-page.eu/file.ext" and "su" in terminals, none has applied (quite logical actually - as I'm sudoer and highest ranked super user, besides only user in computer). Current stand Everything worked & still works nice after this accident, besides this password prompts part. To spoked to log-out nor restart. Synaptic package-manager is still open with root rights (only one, that has left open prior to the issue and not closed since, just in case). Goggled for help and read some manuals/faqs/how-tos - mostly lead to sudoers file management, but not found one specifically for mine issue - so still not any smarter. Really hope, that I don't have to redo OS inst all over again, by just one stupid mistake. Thanks for your reply :-)

• How do I (robustly) remotely execute tasks on Windows workstations in a domain?

  I'm not even sure if "robustly" is a word. Anyway. Context: We have a few hundred Windows 7 workstations on a LAN. We use AD/GPO management pretty heavily, but there are a lot of periodic and/or manual maintenance tasks we need to do that can't be done via GPO/scheduled task. For example, say I want to execute program X (which runs silently, in the background, and doesn't bother the user) on workstation Y, or say I want to execute task A on a workstation group B either on a schedule or on demand. Kicking the users off of their computers to do this (i.e. using RDP) is a no-no, and doesn't work on groups anyway. Question: What's the best way to do this that is robust enough that, after setup, I could give it to beginner support people (read: people who are phobic of the command line, and get confused with GUI interfaces more complicated than Firefox)? I'm a competent programmer, and, if there is a robust set of tools or framework out there for this type of task, I'd consider hacking something together myself if it didn't take too long. If there's some combination of tools or techniques that others use to make remote-workstation-administration doable by beginners, I have yet to find it. For those who care about the "why": I'm midlevel IT, and was told to implement a remote management solution that allows arbitrary/scheduled remote execution, with confirmation that programs actually ran remotely, and the ability to view what they returned. "Why?" I asked, "Can't I just use PsExec and the task scheduler on a dispatcher machine?" "No," I was told, "'Joe' the second-week tech is going to be in charge of this one, and he needs something simple with a GUI." What I've tried: I've played with making a bunch of one-clickable "transfer files to remote computer and run them with PsExec" batch/VB scrips, but those tend to break down and don't easily support running on customizable groups. I've played a little bit with the Windows version of Puppet, but it doesn't support arbitrary-time remote execution (it's ability to group computers into a tree/node structure is really nice though). I've used an older version of Altiris, and, while it does a lot of what I want, it's interface is awful, it's slow, crashes a lot, and is probably too expensive for management. SwiftWater's DMS solution does some of what I want, but it's very underdeveloped, closed-source (not a deal breaker but not ideal), and I get the impression that support and reliability are lacking.

• Apache returns 403 Forbidden for alternative port vhost

  I'm having an issue getting vhosts to work on Apache 2.2, Debian 6. I have two VirtualHosts, one on port 80 and one on port 8888. The port 80 one has been created automatically by DirectAdmin, the 8888 is a custom one. If I need to post more information, let me know. I'm pretty much a beginner at this stuff. .. ..
