• SQL Azure Service Issues &ndash; 10.27.2012 (Restored Now)

  Please note that if you have a Windows Azure website, or use SQL Azure, your site may be experiencing downtime currently.  Notice I just called in regarding one of my public facing internet sites, because the site was failing to load anything but its error page, I couldn’t connect to the database to inspect application error logs, and the Windows Azure Management portal won’t load the SQL Azure extension. After speaking to the representative, he also mentioned that they were also having some problems updating the Service Dashboard which shows service up/down time, and for now, they are posting messages at http://account.windowsazure.com.  Please note that this issue may only be effecting certain regions.  Last, I may have misheard the representative, but he said that the outage was being categorized as a level 8, and if I heard correctly, I think he said that level 8 was the worst level.  I can’t say for sure on this though, because the phone connection to their support number was bad – large amounts of white noise. Good Luck! Update It appears that this outage may also be effecting the following services: SQL Database, Service Bus, Datamarket, Windows Azure Marketplace, Shared Caching, Access Control 2.0, and SQL Reporting. The note on the account page says for the South Central US region, however, I believe the representative I spoke to also mentioned North Central. As I said before though, the connection was bad. Update 2 My site regained connectivity about an hour ago, and it appears that the service dashboard is back in operation with correct status and history. It does appear that I misheard on the phone regarding multiple regions, so chances are this only effected a percentage of the platform. All in all, if this WAS their worst level of a problem, they really got it fixed and back up pretty fast. All in all, I understand that it is inherent for a complex system such as Azure to have ups and downs, but at the end of the day, I am still happy to support Azure to its fullest!

• First JSRs Proposed for Java EE 7

  With the approval of Java SE 7 and Java SE 8 JSRs last month, attention is now shifting towards the Java EE platform.  While functionality pegged for Java EE 7 was previewed at least as early as Devoxx, the filing of these JSRs marks the first, officially proposed, specifications for the next generation of the popular application server standard.  Let's take a quick look at the proposed new functionality.Java Persistence API 2.1The first of the new proposed specifications is JSR 338: Java Persistence API (JPA) 2.1. JPA is designed for use with both Java EE and Java SE and: "deals with the way relational data is mapped to Java objects ("persistent entities"), the way that these objects are stored in a relational database so that they can be accessed at a later time, and the continued existence of an entity's state even after the application that uses it ends. In addition to simplifying the entity persistence model, the Java Persistence API standardizes object-relational mapping." • ghc6 install trouble: hGetContents: invalid argument (invalid UTF-8 byte sequence)

  Having trouble installing ghc6. Here's what seems to be the relevant error that comes up when I try to (apt-get|aptitude) install ghc6: A package failed to install. Trying to recover: Setting up ghc6 (6.12.1-13ubuntu1) ... ghc-pkg: /home/opm/.ghc/i386-linux-6.12.1/package.conf.d/unix-compat-0.2-edefa7bced91ebe610d455bab466e200.conf: hGetContents: invalid argument (invalid UTF-8 byte sequence) (Here's the full output, if you're interested: http://paste.ubuntu.com/566475/ ) This still happens after apt-get clean and apt-get update. My searching around has not really helped me understand what's going on, except that it might be caused by a mismatch in locale. • Stable ubuntu distribution for a broadcom bcm4313 wireless driver and an nvidia 630 graphics adapter

  I have been trying to completely shift to ubuntu or a linux distro for almost 2 years now. I have tried all the ubuntu distros starting from 10.04 through 11.10, but there has always been some bugs with the display drivers or the wireless cards not being recognised and the additional drivers suggested from the ubuntu community not doing the trick always. I tried a lot to fix bugs, checked a lot of forums, launch pad, got some of them fixed, but could not really get a neat and complete ubuntu machine set up till now. Now I really like the whole open source community and the linux platform, my pc at home runs ubuntu 11.04 perfectly but there have been some glitches always with ubuntu on my laptop that has forced me to stick with windows only. Now I am currently on an hp dv6 laptop that has the broadcom bcm4313 wireless driver and the nvidia 630gtm graphics(optimus) driver. Now I tried to do some research on the support of these drivers in linux machines but could not get anywhere. So I would really appreciate if you guys could suggest some linux distro that I could use that has full support of these drivers or has stable bug fixes for these kind of issues. I tried precise pangolin (LTS) through a live CD but i still see a problem with wifi networks which is a little frustrating. Please help me find the perfect match for my laptop :P I would gladly provide any other information necessary.

• Scaling background without scaling foreground in platformer?

  I'm currently developing a platform game and I've run into a problem with scaling resolutions. I want a different resolution of the game to still display the foreground unscaled (characters, tiles, etc) but I want the background to be scaled to fit into the window. To explain this better, my viewport has 4 variables: (x, y, width, height) where x and y are the top left corner and width and height are the dimensions. These can be either 800x600, 1024x768 or 1280x960. When I design my levels, I design everything for the highest resolution (1280x960) and expect the game engine to scale it down if a user is running in a lower resolution. I have tried the following to make it work but nothing I've come up with solves it so far: scale = view->width/1280; drawX = x * scale; drawY = y * scale; (this makes the translation too small for low resolution) and scale = view->width/1280; bgWidth = background->width*scale; bgHeight = background->height*scale; drawX = x + background->width/2 - bgWidth/2; drawY = y + background->height/2 - bgHeight/2; (this makes the translation completely wrong at the edges of the map) The thing is, no matter what resolution the game is run at, the map remains the same size, and the foreground is unscaled. (With a lower resolution you just see less of the foreground in the viewport) I was wondering if anyone had any idea how to solve this problem? Thank you in advance!

• Password Management for Oracle WebLogic customers

  One of the most common requests for enhancements I get across my desk is that customers wish to allow end users to change their passwords from our products. Now, typically password management is not in the realm of individual applications but it is an infrastructure requirement, so we don't usually add this to our roadmaps by default. The issue is that with the vast range of security stores that can be used with our product line across the Web Application Servers we support, it is almost impossible to come up with a generic enough API to work across them. If you have a specific security store on a specific Web Application Server platform then there are simpler solutions. There are a number of ways of implementing this without providing functionality specific functionality: Oracle sells Identity Management software that offers common API's to manage passwords. You can purchase those products and link to the password change dialog in those products using Navigation Keys. If you are a customer using Oracle WebLogic, then there is a sample JSP's that can be linked to provide this functionality under Oracle TechNet (registration required) under Code Samples (project S20). These can be added as a Navigation Key to complete the functionality. This will allow end users to manage their own passwords. Obviously these are all samples and should be treated as customizations when you implement them. If you wish to understand Navigation Keys, then look at the Oracle Utilities Application Framework Integration Guidelines (Doc Id: 789060.1) available from My Oracle Support.

• 2D Tile Map files for Platformer, JSON or DB?

  I'm developing a 2D platformer with some uni friends. We've based it upon the XNA Platformer Starter Kit which uses .txt files to store the tile map. While this is simple it does not give us enough control and flexibility with level design. Some examples: for multiple layers of content multiple files are required, each object is fixed onto the grid, doesn't allow for rotation of objects, limited number of characters etc. So I'm doing some research into how to store the level data and map file. Reasoning for DB: From my perspective I see less redundancy of data using a database to store the tile data. Tiles in the same x,y position with the same characteristics can be reused from level to level. It seems like it would simple enough to write a method to retrieve all the tiles that are used in a particular level from the database. Reasoning for JSON: Visually editable files, changes can be tracked via SVN a lot easier. But there is repeated content. Do either have any drawbacks (load times, access times, memory etc) compared to the other? And what is commonly used in the industry?   I have been blogging on Weblogs.asp.net for a while now. I don't remember when actually i got a berth on to Weblogs. I think it was MS Joe – Joe Stagner way back somewhere in 2005 or sometime around that time frame (i don't remember the exact dates) that he had opened up weblogs.asp.net blog space. I remember sending an email to him and i had got a space for myself. So far weblogs has been a great starting platform for me. After close to a decade in the industry (this is my 9 year in the industry) i finally realized that i too can write and i have been lately passionate about writing. So far i just have 15 posts under my belt and close to 5 community speaking sessions. I have been lately enjoying writing and community things that i decided to have my own identity on the web. Yes i have purchased my own domain and i have taken up a hosting for my own blog. My new web identity would be 2 domains under my name – www.kashyapas.com and www.lohithgn.com. I will be discontinuing writing on weblogs.asp.net and will be fulltime at www.kashyapas.com. My RSS feed at weblogs.asp.net has been redirected to point to my new site. So whoever had subscribed to my RSS will still be getting the updated content from my new site. So do drop into my new home and let me know your feedback. • Is HTML5/WebGL performance bad on low-end Android tablets and phones?

  I've developed a couple of WebGL games, and am trying them out on Android. I found that they run very slowly on my tablet, however. For example, a game with 10 sprites or so runs as 5fps. I tried Chrome and CocoonJS, but they are comparably slow. I also tried other games, and even games with only 5 or so moving sprites are this slow. This seems inconsistent with reports from others, such as this benchmark. Typically, when people talk about HTML5 game performance, they mention well-known and higher-end phones and tables. While my 7" tablet is cheap (I believe it's a relabeled Allwinner tablet, apparently with the Mali 400 GPU), I found it generally has a good gaming performance. All the games I tried run smoothly. I also developed an OpenGL ES 2 demo with 200 shaded 3D objects, and it ran at 50fps. My suspicion is that many low-end and white-label devices may have unacceptable HTML5/WebGL support, which means there may be a large section of gamers you will not reach when you choose this as your platform. I've heard rumors about inconsistent performance of HTML5 and WebGL on different devices, but no clear picture emerges. I would like to hear if any of you have had similar experiences with HTML5 or WebGL, or whether I can find information about the percentage of devices I can expect to have decent performance.

Carlson is an American businessman and the Grassroots Party nominee. Carlson is the owner of Last Place on Earth, a head shop located in Duluth, Minnesota. In September 2011, the shop was raided by police for selling bath salts and synthetic marijuana. After the raid, Carlson filed a lawsuit to strike down Minnesota's ban on the substances. His suit was dismissed by the court in November 2011. The Grassroots Party was created in the 1980s to oppose drug prohibition.  The party shares many of the the political leftist values of the Green Party but with a greater emphasis on marijuana/hemp legalization issues.  The permanent platform of the Grassroots Party is the Bill of Rights. Individual candidate's positions on issues vary from Libertarian to Green. All Grassroots candidates would end marijuana/hemp prohibition and re-legalize Cannabis for all its uses. • How to Create a Minimize All Windows (Win + M) Hotkey for Mac OS X

  Windows users have been able to minimize every window on their desktop ever since keyboards with the Win key started showing up — just tap WIN + M on your keyboard, and every window is minimized. For Mac OS X, it’s not quite as simple. You can, of course, use the CMD + OPT + H + M shortcut key combination to hide most windows… but that’s a lot of keys to hit at once, and it doesn’t always minimize everything in my experience. So like everything else I wanted from Windows, it was time to figure out how to get it on OS X as well. This method uses QuickSilver to provide the shortcut key trigger — if there’s a better way to do that, please let us know. • Google play game services and Facebook integration in one game

  We are creating a cross platform game for iOS and Android. We have thought about how and with which services we should integrate achievements and scoreboards with. For the iOS part, we are pretty sure that this how we want to do, in order from when the user opens the app for the first time: Connect with Game Center (Should be automatic, the user shouldn't even notice?) We will also get the players nickname for public scoreboards here. Ask if the user wants to connect with Facebook so that we can compare the players highscores with their friends. We could add Google play game services there as well, but I don't feel like that adds anything to the experience for the end user. Now comes the tricky part: Android We thought that we could do just like for iOS, except that we replace Game Center with Google Play Game Services. However, unlike Game Center, Game Services will ask the user to log in to their Google+ account and allow us to access their account. So now, what we have is a double login, first with Google+ and then with Facebook. What will users think about that? Should we scrap Play Services entirely and just ask the user for a nickname within our app and user Facebook for achievements?

  Hello. I am following along a book in which Insight debugger is required. I didn't find it on my Maverick. I googled and I found that it's not supported in debian anymore but I really need to install it. I tried to compile the source and it installed but keep telling me that tk is missing whenever i start it. I installed tk with sudo aptitude install tk then tried to run again it's the same. I compiled it one more time and nothing really changes. So please how can I install that ?
